[Bug 64594] Re: hurestore will always crash on startup (unfinished tool)

2008-10-10 Thread Rob Pearman
Adam - There's a link on the right-hand side of the bug page (under
'duplicates') that you can use to unsubscribe.

Tiggsy - I agree the fact the restore is completely non functional is
frustrating. I still use it for backups however but use DAR directly to
do any restores I need.

[Bug 257386] Re: linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic failed to install

2008-09-05 Thread Rob Pearman
I've been having the same problem on linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic while
trying to install Virtualbox on Hardy. Just enabled the hardy-proposed
repository and could then install virtualbox-ose-modules-generic and
successfully start a VM, even though I'm still running the 2.6.24-19
kernel as I haven't restarted yet.

I got the same problem running the Ubuntu Hardy Release Candidate 64bit live

E: ubuntu-desktop: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

Also attached the Synaptic log file in case it's any use.

What is the impact of this problem?

[Bug 183330] Re: xsensors blank display

2008-01-28 Thread Rob Pearman
Thanks for the tip.

"sensors" gave "No sensors found!". Running "sensors-detect" and
stepping through with default responses identified the following kernel
drivers required:

w83627ehf
coretemp

Having loaded these I ran "sensors" again in a terminal window and got
some results (although several of these are flagged as "ALARM" - I've
attached the full output FYI but I guess the detail of the results is
probably not in scope of this bug).

Running "xsensors" again still results in a tiny window but shows the
following in the terminal output:

Sensor 'w83627ehf' not supported by xsensors!
Sensor 'coretemp' not supported by xsensors!
Sensor 'coretemp' not supported by xsensors!

[Bug 173797] kernel oops on booting

2007-12-03 Thread Rob Pearman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

I've just upgraded my PC from an old Pentium 4 to the following:

Motherboard : Asrock 2Core1333-2.66G
Processor: Intel 1.6Ghz (model E2140?) overclocked by mfr to 2.66Ghz
Memory: 1GB DDR2 667Mhz 5300
Graphics: Onboard Intel GMA 950
Audio: Onboard
LAN: Onboard
HD: Seagate IDE 40GB ST340810A
CD: LG 40x CD-RW HL-DT-ST GCR-8400B

Basically, I've kept the hard disk and CD drive, case and PSU and
replaced everything else.

Now I get a kernel panic every time I boot from either my hard disk or
the live CD (7.10 Gutsy in both cases); I've also tried to boot DSL with
similar results.

Actual messages I can see before the system freezes are:

*pde =

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I've Googled and searched the Ubuntu forums but nothing that helps. I've
tried the 'acpi=off ide=nodma' boot options as suggested in some posts,
as well as 'nosmp', and run a memory test, which was clean. The threads
I found seem to say it's a hardware issue, but where do I start? I had a
look around the forums and there seem to be people out there running
Gutsy with this motherboard (but not the onbard video), and, separately,
the onboard Intel video, so I'm v. confused.

Any help gratefully received.
Thanks in advance

[Bug 374315] Re: Jaunty Upgrade: Spontaneous shutdown :(

2010-01-23 Thread Rob Pearman
I appreciate this sounds somewhat random, but then so it the fault!

My system only seems to do this spontaneous shutdown when I'm running
the Terminal Server Client. I have this installed as part of the
standard Ubuntu install, and it reports version 0.150.

Note also, also though the description of the bug is 'Jaunty Upgrade...'
I did a fresh install of Jaunty to build my system, but kept my existing
/home (and therefore user settings) from Intrepid.

[Bug 456790] Re: kernel panic on boot - not syncing attempted to kill init

2010-05-12 Thread Rob Pearman
Hi Jeremy, thanks for picking this up again.

I've downloaded the development release from the URL you sent me and it
still fails when trying to boot from the latest i386 ISO. I think it's
the same reason / messages but I'll double-check and post an update /
screen shot soon, along with the output of the apport-collect command.

As this seems to be a re-occurrence of an earlier problem (#173797),
have you looked at the resolution of that one?

Thanks
Rob

I just had a spontaneous shutdown that I think is caused by this bug

[Bug 456790] [NEW] kernel panic on boot - not syncing attempted to kill init

2009-10-20 Thread Rob Pearman
Public bug reported:

Karmic (9.10) beta downloaded c. 01.30am BST on 19/09/2009 - ubuntu-9.10
-beta-desktop-i386.iso

Having burned the ISO to CD and booted from it I get a kernel panic
after choosing my language and attempting to boot the live CD.

Digital camera screen image and HardInfo output attached.

It looks like this is a re-occurrence of a problem we had in previous
releases running the 32 bit kernel on 64 bit processors - see bug
#173797.

I'm running an Asrock 2Core1333-2.66G motherboard with Intel 2140 CPU.

Note I can boot from the downloaded ISO using VirtualBox without any
problems.
