I've been having the same problem on linux-image-2.6.24-20-generic while trying to install Virtualbox on Hardy. Just enabled the hardy-proposed repository and could then install virtualbox-ose-modules-generic and successfully start a VM, even though I'm still running the 2.6.24-19 kernel as I haven't restarted yet.
