[Bug 1691675] Re: Gnome Shell desktop zoom judders and performs badly
People like me, with poor eyesight, found a safe heaven in compiz enhanced zoom desktop on Gnome 2. It was customizable, the movements and zoom were smooth and it could be controlled using both keyboard and mouse shortcuts. Many of us felt completely abandoned after the release of Unity in 2010 (yes it had zoom but it was severely limited, see my summary comment and reference to old bug reports here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/762699/comments/18 ) The zoom functionality in Gnome 3 does update the mouse position nearly as often as it should. This results in choppy movements when zoomed in and makes it very hard to read text. It also lacks the ability to zoom in and out using the scroll wheel of the mouse. I completely agree with Robert Cole and I am sad to see that this bug is still not resolved in 12.04 Beta 1. I would like to emphasize the importance of fixing this bug. It makes it IMPOSSIBLE for visually impaIred persons (like me) to use the ubuntu desktop and it will force me (and people with similar disabilities) to move to a different OS. The well integrated compiz enhanced zoom desktop feature is one of the main reasons why i started to use ubuntu as my primary desktop and why I normally recommend it to people with similar disabilities. It makes me frustrated to see that Apple is the only company who seems to prioritize this type of functionality on both desktops and mobile devices. [Bug 762699] Re: Unity launcher and panel do not zoom alongsize the desktop with Enhanced Zoom Desktop
There are six reports related to this bug dating back to 11.04. Six years later nothing has been fixed. There is no patch or workaround as far as i know. I've been in limbo due to insufficient zoom accessibility features in Unity, Gnome 3 and KDE. Being stuck with gnome classic and 12.04. Honestly feeling that Linux has turned it's back on me. I finally ended up with KDE and filed a bug assessing the main issue i had with the zoom functionality here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=357692. The bug was resolved in LESS THAN ONE WEEK. There is now a working patch for 5.5 and it will (as far as I know) be implemented in Plasma 5.6. The end result is far superior to any zoom I've ever used (on Linux, Mac and Windows). So what's the point of this rant like comment? I totally agree. This bug makes Ubuntu unusable for a large amount of people!
