[Bug 255045] [NEW] python-qt4 from kubuntu-members-kde4 breaks python-qwt5-qt4

2008-08-05 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: python-qt4

When installing KDE4.1 by adding the repository http://ppa.launchpad.net
/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu, a new version of python-qt4 is installed.

This version breaks python-qwt5-qt4 from the official hardy repository.
For example, a "pen()" method returns a QPolygonF instead of a QPen.

After uninstalling python-qt4, removing the kde4 repository and
installing python-qt4 again everything works as expected.

[Bug 390662] Re: nautilus shortcuts doesn't work at first press

2009-07-29 Thread Peter Würtz
I think this bug is related to my experience that nautilus sometimes
ignores copy/paste shortcuts. I couldn't really reproduce this bug until
I found this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1219031

"After (a) opening a new nautilus window, or (b) navigating to a new
directory in an existing nautilus window, there is often — but not
always — a brief pause of a second or two where nautilus will not react
to certain keyboard shortcuts."

Indeed, if you perform these operations quickly (keyboard), nautilus
misses some keystrokes from time to time, although I don't know a way to
exploit this behavior with 100% success.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-05-26 Thread Peter Würtz
I disagree, this bug renders Ubuntu/Gnome useless in situations when
working with other workstations in a domain.

Having a central file server for user and group data is very common,
like pam-mounting a users home when logging in or just using a common
cifs share for a group of workers.

From: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance
High - Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users

In my opinion, being unable to save textfiles is a severe impact, this bug
should be marked as high.
This bug is pending long over one year now and we are talking about a text
editors vital function!

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-05-26 Thread Peter Würtz
in line 670, gedit tries to rename the file to a backup file... like
moving "testfile" to "testfile~"

if (rename (saver->priv->local_path, backup_filename) != 0)

I checked "local_path" and "backup_filename", they are correct. I also
wrote a small test application using "rename()" from stdio.h and renamed
the same files on the mounted cifs filesystem, which works.

I'm not a gnome developer, could someone help me out here please? I
assume the rename() function is not the rename function from stdio.h,
does gnome implement its own rename?

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-05-26 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, this is the problem:

Gedit opens a file, moves the original file to a backup file while keeping the
file open, and finally deletes the backup file if you choose not to keep
backups.
The rename method sets errno = ETXTBSY, so moving the original file fails.

I don't think moving/deleting open files on purpose is a good idea,
although it works for most linux file systems. But its definitely a bad
idea for network file systems like sshfs and cifs, which of course
fails.

For me, a switch to compiz-fusion caused the problem you described. My

I just switched from nvidia-glx to nvidia-glx-new on another machine

So I have 2 systems with same drivers and same software, one showing the

[Bug 134671] Re: [Tribe5] cups-pdf do not overwrite existing pdf

2007-09-19 Thread Peter Würtz
I just learned about the new PDF printing feature in 7.10. When I
printed my first PDF from firefox, I just sat there waiting for some
kind of confirmation of the printing process... but nothing happens...
after a few moments I thought "hey, maybe the PDF has already been saved
to the desktop", but nothing there... I checked the cups logfiles for
any errors and so on... it took some minutes to accidentally find out
that my pdfs have been saved to ~/PDF

What I'm trying to tell is that the pdf printing option requires a
standard "save-file as..." dialog. The current solution is misleading
and broken. One can see this by reading the discussion about possible
workarounds for yet simple and common situations as described above.

Right now, printing to PDF in gutsy is not satisfactory. There must be a
way to ask the user what to do and to inform about the result of a
printing job. Even without a "Save As..." dialog, a simple "The file has
been saved to ~/PDF/xxx.pdf" message would be enough to clear things up.
The user will know about the location and the name of the PDF, and
he/she will learn about the behavior regarding the replacement of files.

[Bug 49594] Re: Bonobo-activation-server sometimes is not killed after session restart, leading to many unexpected problems

2007-09-20 Thread Peter Würtz
I experienced a problem that looks related to your report. When starting
a gnome session for the second time, the gnome-panel fails to load
several applets. Instead, I'm getting a error message for each applet. I
tried deleting .gnome, .gnome2, .gconf, .gconfd and killing gconfd-2,
but only a complete reboot fixed the panel applets. When gracefully
logging out from the gnome desktop or just killing X, the problem occurs
on the next session again.

Recently I discovered the bonobo-activation-server running in the
background. After killing this service, the broken panel loads just fine
again.

I assume this is the same kind of bug, although the problem arises in a
different way.

[Bug 134671] Re: [Tribe5] cups-pdf do not overwrite existing pdf

2007-09-20 Thread Peter Würtz
Indeed, GNOME and KDE already offer options to save PDF and PostScript
files, but only for applications using the desktop libraries. A cups
based PDF printer is a valuable asset for applications like Gimp,
Firefox or generic applications independent from a specific desktop.

I know CUPS is not a desktop application, but problems like this have
been encountered before. Think about the pin-helper application used by
the bluetooth utilities. Although the bluetooth service is not a desktop
application, in case of a handshake-event a helper application of choice
is started.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2007-11-28 Thread Peter Würtz
Guys, please actually read the stuff others wrote before...

As I said, the problem with gedit is the "save" routine. It relies on moving
the file that is being edited while the filehandle is kept open. This works for
most filesystems, but it fails on cifs and sshfs (by the way, it works with
smbfs). There are 2 ways to fix this:
1. do not move open files
2. fix support for moving open files in cifs and sshfs

I would just change the save procedure and go with the first solution,
but the gedit devs don't like the idea of changing their way of saving
files because any other solution would require a full copy of the text
file (for backup) or open up racing conditions if someone else tries to
edit the same file.

I can confirm this bug, all systems I've seen so far using the intel gfx
driver behave like this.

The combination AIGLX + XV does not work. If it works, you'll get an
video overlay, so your video image wont be transformed by beryl/compiz,
which looks strange.

So far, only the nvidia driver can do this.

This is a known bug and I'm surprised nobody cared to handle or
workaround this problem in time.

Right now, you enable desktop effects, and if you aren't a lucky owner
of an nvidia card, you can't play videos at all. Most people won't know
why.

2007-04-15 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ov511-source

the code includes "linux/config.h" multiple times, which is not correct
anymore. the compiler will quit because the file does not exist.

all includes of "linux/config.h" must be changed to "linux/autoconf.h"

in the current state, compiling the ov511 driver does not work

[Bug 88213] Re: Feisty Herd 4 does not mount encrypted partition

2007-03-10 Thread Peter Würtz
I'm also getting this error, when investigating the mount problem by
calling gnome-mount manually.

"Timeout for waiting for cleartext device... Exiting."

The mapper device is set up correctly by gnome-mount. As root, i am able
to mount the mapper device without any problems. However, gnome-mount
does not mount the filesystem.

I tried mounting the mapper device using gnome-mount... don't know if
that is supposed to work at all... nevertheless... here is the output
trying to mount /dev/mapper/luks using gnome-mount.

** (gnome-mount:7786): WARNING **: Given device '/dev/mapper

[Bug 88430] feisty loads a broken module at boot time

2007-02-27 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: module-init-tools

Hi, there is a broken wlan driver, causing a kernel-oops and system
freeze in the ubuntu-sources (bug #78255). This driver is abandoned and
experimental.

This bug is a boot-stopper for ppl like me having this wlan chipset
onboard. there is no BIOS option for disabling the wlan chipset and
there is no way to prevent feisty from loading this driver.

I suggest to add the kernel module "r8187" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
as soon as possible.

People could still try to modprobe new versions of the driver, but you
should really stop this driver from autoloading.

I would be happy if I could finally boot/install feisty/herd5 normally

[Bug 78255] Re: [feisty] rtl8180 oops on kernel 2.6.20-4

2007-02-01 Thread Peter Würtz
This bug is a boot-stopper for ppl like me having this wlan chipset
onboard. there is no BIOS option for disabling the wlan chipset and
there is no way to prevent feisty from loading this driver.

For the 8187 chipset there are this dmesg lines:

rtl8187: WW:This driver has EXPERIMENTAL support for this chipset.
rtl8187: WW:use it with care and at your own risk and
rtl8187: WW:**PLEASE** REPORT SUCCESS/INSUCCESS TO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Already tried to contact the person developing the driver, but got no
response for like 2 weeks. Dont know if this driver has been abandoned.

I suggest to add r8187 and r818x /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist immediately
until there is some movement regarding that driver in the kernel source.

People could still try to modprobe new versions of the driver (if there
are any), but you should really stop this driver from loading at boot
time!

[Bug 75858] png to postscript -> black image

2006-12-15 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

When trying to postscript-print certain PNG images, I get a completely
black document instead of the image.

This bug appears to be in Ubuntu - Edgy Eft, back in Dapper Drake
everything works fine.

Here are 2 test cases:

Open the png images using the standard gnome image viewer (which is EOG
for me)

http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/good.png
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/bad.png

Print them using the "Generic Postscript" printer, Location "File". I
get a good postscript when printing "good.png", and a black document
when printing "bad.png" using Edgy, where Dapper works fine.

The postscript output files are:
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/dapper.ps.gz
http://www.students.uni-mainz.de/pwuertz/bug/edgy.ps.gz

Where Edgy users see a black document on both postscripts, Dapper users
see a normal image when opening dapper.ps.gz but also a black document
when opening edgy.ps.gz

Maybe its a more global bug in the postscript system?

[Bug 75858] Re: regression: png to postscript -> black image

2006-12-21 Thread Peter Würtz
gs-gpl -sDEVICE=x11
gs-esp -sDEVICE=x11

both commands on both files give me black images

i tried f-spot and gthumb, both provide black images (although the print
preview looks good)

printing from firefox works (assuming firefox is using another printing
system)

printing directly to CUPS ("lpr -o scaling=100 ") works also

so this bug is related to a specific ps/gs system used by gnome?

[Bug 379761] Re: MASTER - FF 3.5 font hinting does not honour gnome-settings

2010-03-26 Thread Peter Würtz
I don't understand why this bug is considered to be a firefox bug as it
is clearly a bug of the application we use to change the font settings.
Non-gnome applications like firefox or qt4 based applications rely on
.fonts.conf for the font hinting configuration instead of pulling
parameters from gconf. So is this file not created or modified when the
user configures this?

Gnome bug?

[Bug 1831020] [NEW] BTRS Raid boot failure

2019-05-30 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 18.10 to 19.04 my BTRFS Raid0 based system
doesn't boot anymore.

It drops to busybox because of an error mounting the root file system.

Manually trying to mount root reveals an error message saying that the
second raid volume could not be found by UUID. But the output from
`blkid` shows that the volume with the UUID in question exists.

Booting the system using the previous kernel 4.18 from advanced boot
options works flawlessly.

[Bug 1831020] Re: BTRS Raid boot failure

2019-06-02 Thread Peter Würtz
I managed to mount the root volume from the kernel 5 boot fail busybox
by explicitly adding the correct device=/dev/sdXY names to the btrfs
mount options. After this one time manual mount, kernel 5 seems to boot
fine now. Seems like the kernel 5 btrfs driver "fixed" whatever it had
trouble with.

Can't verify if kernel 5.2 would have fixed the problem automatically
though..

>From what I understood, all of the classic hardware codec options
require the MMAL userspace library, which currently cannot be built for
64bit. The only option for hardware encoding/decoding is the V4L2 m2m
interface, which in turn requires the `bcm2835_codec` module we are
missing.

[Bug 1696456] [NEW] HDF5 files appear empty

2017-06-07 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

The HDF5 viewer "hdfview" is currently broken. All files opened by this
application just appear empty.

As discussed in debian bugreport https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=853750 this is due to an incompatibility of HDF5

2018-01-09 Thread Peter Würtz
This issue was also reported at the WSL GitHub project:
https://github.com/Microsoft/WSL/issues/2615

The reason seems to be a bug in glibc that has been fixed a few months ago:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22273

To fix this we need this patch for glibc in 17.10.

[Bug 941826] Re: dlopen(libGL.so) resolves to mesa rather than nvidia

2016-04-06 Thread Peter Würtz
I don't even understand the argument. Lets turn it around/right again:
Why not just dlopen libGL.so? Any application should be able to dlopen
libGL.so.

"libGL.so" is the library name everyone agrees to and everyone expects
to find, which is exactly why this file exists in the first place,
doesn't it? One should expect that this primary library name points to
the most reasonable and (before all else) WORKING OpenGL library. If a
distribution decides to do some name mangling for maintaining multiple
versions or vendors it is of course free to do so. Please name it
"libGL.so.foo" or "libGl.so.bar" if you want, buy why is it necessary
for pyqt to know about your naming decision and most importantly: Why is
it necessary to stick with a broken(!) default configuration?

It baffles me that it took 4 years to boil it down to one line of not
giving a damn.

drm/i915: suspend fbdev device around suspend/hibernate

commit 3fa016a0b5c5237e9c387fc3249592b2cb5391c6 upstream.

Looking at hibernate overwriting I though it looked like a cursor,
so I tracked down this missing piece to stop the cursor blink
timer. I've no idea if this is sufficient to fix the hibernate
problems people are seeing, but please test it.

Both radeon and nouveau have done this for a long time.

I've run this personally all night hib/resume cycles with no fails.

[Bug 1470745] [NEW] Non-skippable filesystem check at boot time

2015-07-02 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

In the past, whenever a filesystem check was forced at boot time the
user was notified by a message on the splash screen and had the option
to cancel the check by pressing "C".

At some point this situation regressed into the current state where:

1) There is no notification any more. The boot process won't complete
for apparently no reason, showing an empty splash or simply black
screen. You have to manually step through the consoles and find the one
where the actual boot messages appear to find out that there is a fs
check running.

2) There is no way of cancelling a fs check any more. This is most
intolerable for a productive system since it renders you whole machine
useless in a time where you need it to get some work done or if you want
to start it for a presentation.

If Ubuntu enforces fs checks on boot a skip-option is an absolute
requirement for users with large drives. For me, checking a 1TB drive
takes 30 minutes! This wouldn't be much of an issue if Ubuntu let me
choose when to check it, but it forces me to wait half an hour for a
system I might be needing right now.

These long fsck times aren't uncommon, other users are reporting this as well:

[Bug 1472622] [NEW] Unity doesn't update or freezes contents within application window

2015-07-08 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

When switching between different application windows there is a chance that the
contents of a window just freeze. For me this happens with Firefox quite often,
and extremely often when using QtCreator. Once such a window is frozen,
scrolling or keyboard input seems to work, but you won't see any effect because
the window contents are not updated anymore.
You can "re-animate" such a frozen window again by just resizing it a bit, but
it will get stuck again some time later after switching between windows.

This bug doesn't happen with openbox or gnome as window manager /
compositor.

[Bug 1447224] Re: Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-04-26 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, I read about restoring subtitle functionality by switching to
fullscreen in #1448234, which gave me an idea. There is nothing wrong
with totem or vlc. Yet again its Ubuntu's appmenu that botches up
applications. After uninstalling appmenu everything works as expected.

that appmenu is responsible for the missing menu items.

Just ran into this error when trying to install 13.10. Is the installer

Is it possible to install Ubuntu at all under these circumstances? Does

I can reproduce the bug any time on Ubuntu 15.04 by starting QtCreator,
create a new Qt Quick Application and run it (Ctrl+R). The Quick

The freeze also happens whenever I interact with a ComboBox in QtQuick

General observation: Whenever a QtQuick related Window is opened and closed in
Unity, Firefox and QtCreator will freeze.

[Bug 1447224] [NEW] Regression: Unable to select audio or subtitle tracks

2015-04-22 Thread Peter Würtz
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 15.04 neither Totem nor VLC are able to select
different audio tracks or subtitles when playing videos with multiple
tracks. This is a regression from Ubuntu 14.10 where playback of such
files was working as expected. I tried this on multiple machines running
15.04 and with various media, mostly MKV videos but also AVI videos or
simply DVDs.

or the menu item is just empty.

[Bug 961932] [NEW] i915 memory corruption after suspend/hibernate

2012-03-22 Thread Peter Würtz

Apparently, the intel driver causes memory corruption after suspending

[Bug 961932] Re: i915 memory corruption after suspend/hibernate

2012-03-22 Thread Peter Würtz
It's possible that the report in #960692 describes this bug as it
appeared when he "opened the display", although since this bug is about
memory corruption, the traceback could point you to any other kernel
module. In the LKML thread I linked, Linus pointed out that a crash
reported in the ext3 module might actually originate from the i915
driver.

By the way, this bug should be of "critical" importance as it
affects/crashes the whole system and may cause memory or even file
system corruption.

Hm, this bug here existed already in 2012, whereas bug 1248642 is a
regression from a change in binutils in 2013. Also, this missing

[Bug 1248642] Re: dynamic library inconsistencies with OpenGL/C++

2014-01-16 Thread Peter Würtz
@Daniel Dadap, @Brian Nguyen
This kind of problem seems to be similar to a very old and persistent bug where
PyQt cannot create shaders when using the NVIDIA driver on Ubuntu (bug #941826).
This small script
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-qt4/+bug/941826/+attachment/3950419/+files/nvidia-python-qt-bug.py)
demonstrates the problem and a workaround by "preloading" another opengl
module. This really looks related, I don't see how though since the problem is
way older and python is definitely linked to pthreads.

Please also have a look at my example and workaround in #10. As

bindings loading the ubuntu-packaged nvidia driver.

[Bug 941826] Re: PyQt cannot compile shaders with Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers

2014-08-12 Thread Peter Würtz
Ok, I think I found the problem.

Apparently the PyQt application ends up loading the Mesa GL library
(/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mesa/libGL.so.1.2.0) instead of the NVidia
driver (/usr/lib/nvidia-331/libGL.so.331.38) that is loaded when
importing PyOpenGL first.

The difference seems to be the library name when calling dlopen().
PyOpenGL tries to import "libGL.so.1", whereas PyQt imports "libGL.so",
without the ".1" suffix.

A simple C application calling dlopen() and checking /proc//maps
shows that "libGL.so" points to the Mesa driver, whereas "libGL.so.1"
ends up loading the NVidia driver.

So this is a bug in Ubuntu's NVidia package I assume?

[Bug 941826] Re: PyQt cannot compile shaders with Ubuntu's Nvidia drivers

2014-08-12 Thread Peter Würtz
The first entry of "libGL.so" in "ldconfig -p" points to
"/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so", which is a symlink to the mesa
driver. After deleting that link pyqt works fine as expected. That
symlink belongs to the "libgl1-mesa-dev" package and seems to overrule
the libGL.so entries in ldconfig for the nvidia driver.
