[Bug 251976] Re: Copy disc sometimes fails, sometimes works
I am trying to copy a data CD. This is a normally formatted, once written CDR that I now need another exact copy of. (I should have made two to start with, perhaps...) I put the CD with my data on it into the drive. After a few seconds it automatically mounts and up comes a nautilus browser window. I already know what is on the disc and want to copy (duplicate) the whole thing, not use individual files. So I close the nautilus browser window. Now I can see the Gnome desktop. On the desktop is an icon for my data CD that I just put in the drive, the one that I want to make an exact copy (a clone) of. I right click on that icon to bring up the menu which has the option "Copy Disc". I left click that option, to start the disc copy process. This far everything has worked as I would expect. Now that I have clicked to start the copy, up comes the Copy Disc Dialogue. For a few moments it is grey, then it turns to colour and I can use it. I am happy with the defaults so I click the "Write" button. After this one of two things happens; 1: the correct process of reading the disc to make an image, ejecting the original disc and prompting me to insert a blank disc and writing the image to it, with all the prompts and dialogues that I'd expect. This is success, and what I would expect. 2: after a few moments the Copy Disc Dialogue disappears and nothing happens. This is a failure, and not what I would expect. If the process fails (case two) then the icon for the original disc is still on the desktop, and if I start the process again by right clicking it I normally achieve a successful copy operation. What I did notice, having nineteen discs to copy, is that there is a reliable clue early in the process. When the Copy Disc Dialogue appears, the desktop icon for the original master disc in the drive (the one with data that I want to copy) should disappear from the desktop. If that happens, the copy process will complete. Sometimes the desktop icon for the original disc does not disappear when the Copy Disc Dialogue appears; in this case the copy process fails as in case two above. -- Copy disc sometimes fails, sometimes works https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251976 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 287811] Re: Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder'
I'm still stuck with a deleted items folder that cannot be emptied, causing the Summary and folder mismatch error. I first tried removing all the ev-summary files, which don't get recreated, confirming MiiJaySung's suggestion that they are now outdated and unused with the move to a different database engine (sqlite?). However, removing index, cmeta and index.data files didn't solve the problem for me. Evolution did spend quite some time indexing on startup and reinstated these latter files but is still giving the same mismatch error. Does anyone know of any other files (or well hidden ones?) that also need to be removed? For now Evolution still works for me, but I can't empty the Deleted Items. One day I'll want to do that... [Bug 287811] Re: Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder'
Mark, it does indeed have a variety of folders, and also some vfolders (search folders). I thought I'd been through them all, but I was working manually so could easily have missed something. A quick play with the desktop search tool revealed cmeta files for the vfolders although no index or index.data for them. Might these need to be removed too? I'm leaving it for tonight as I've just cooked some food and that seems more important! I'll try again tomorrow, probably using an automated process to remove the cmeta, index and index.data throughout the ~/.evolution tree (after taking a backup). I'll report back when I've tried again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled on my workstation, but still have no (automatic) menu item. I've also installed on my laptop, also running Jaunty. In that case the menu item does appear automatically as expected. So the problem is peculiar to one of my systems. Of course that is the one I actually have a scanner attached to... In my case the problem persists in Jaunty release candidate. The workaround that previously worked for me (briefly, removing files matching "*ibex*" in /mail/local) has not worked for me for a month or more now... Bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=550414 appears at first sight to refer to this bug, so I think it has already been reported upstream. A quick read of that report suggests that the bug itself may already be fixed, but the fix does not clean up already corrupted evolution installs. There are suggestions in the report for removal of further indexing/.db files to clean up existing damaged installations. I shall try this when I next have time, which should be this week and will report back with more detail. ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #550414 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=550414 -- Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/287811 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It automatically mounts, opening a browser window and appearing as an icon on the desktop. If I close the browser window, I can right click the desktop icon. Copy disc is offered as an option in the menu that pops up. When I select it the copy disc dialogue opens up. I click on 'write' (to *read* and *copy* the CD that is in the drive, an open bug elsewhere). After I click on 'write' to go forward one of two things happen; either the process goes forward correctly or the dialogue just disappears. A second attempt usually works fine. I note that when the Copy Disc Dialogue opens up (and after it ungreys), sometimes the desktop icon for the CD remains on the desktop, sometimes it disappears. I've now found a better fix: Step one; highlight the area where the grid lines are missing. (Or the whole sheet, should you wish. Step three; select the "Background" tab of the Format Cells dialogue. Step four; above the background colour selection table there is a full width box displaying the words "No Fill". Click on this to select it. (The outline doubles when selected.) Step five; Click the "Ok" button on the Format Cells dialogue. The dialogue will close and your grid lines will have returned, without text or number formatting parameters being changed. I've just seen my first instance of the greyed out but responding symptom for a couple of weeks... This time I played with it for a minute or two; everything I tried still worked normally in monochrome, an oddity is that RSS feed bookmarks dropped down in colour as normal, over the monochrome Firefox. Going into the System menu and turning off visual effects instantly returned Firefox to full colour. It continued in full colour after restarting visual effects. Firefox was not restarted, the same instance ran through the whole process. I'm happy to provide log files, run debug versions and the like if I'm told what is needed. [Bug 124581] Re: Firefox greyed out, even though it's responding
It's happening again for me right now, so I'm investigating more; The greyed out characteristic affects just one window in Firefox; if I open a link in another window that is in normal colour. Opening the link in another tab in the greyed out window stays monochrome. Staying in the monochrome window, all the dropdown menus display in colour. That includes bookmarks, feed bookmarks, smart bookmarks, address bar, google bar, and menu bar items (File, Edit etc.) Changing the System=>Preferences=>Appearance=>Visual Effects from 'Normal' to 'Extra' instantly restored the window to colour. Possible trigger for the symptom is heavy activity in Evolution alongside Firefox. So two workarounds present themselves; reopen everything in a new window and close the old one, or just tweak the Visual Effects settings to a different level. Will now try to see if I can provoke the symptom by running intensive Evolution activities alongside Firefox. [Bug 352711] [NEW] Package does not include .fdi file needed for full function (Jaunty/Intrepid)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek I am using the beta release of Jaunty/9.04 updated as of 31st March. The xserver-xorg-input-aiptek package now installs via Synaptic without errors. However when I try to use my pen and tablet I find that I can move the cursor around the screen without problems, but cannot click with either stylus or buttons. No pressure sensitivity is available in the Gimp. A well know search engine led me to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AiptekTablet where it is suggested that for Ubuntu 8.10 it is necessary to add a .fdi file to enable all features of the device and driver. (This did work on my previous installation of 8.10, but with a crash problem on startup if the tablet is plugged in.) The suggested .fdi file (also given below) works correctly /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-aiptek.fdi (root:root) aiptek true On stylus absolute 0 511 Note that this contains the two suggested lines to give pressure sensitivity, without them clicks work but there is no continual gradation available to Gimp. Note also that the tablet must be configured within Gimp as an extended input device for pressure sensitivity. I would suggest that this .fdi file or something similar should be included in the package, as otherwise console work is needed to get the tablet and pen to work in both 8.10 and 9.04. [Bug 355021] [NEW] Unplugging USB tablet crashes xserver (Jaunty)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek I am using Jaunty beta, updated to 4th of April. For several days now my Aiptek tablet has been working, but with a persistent bug. If I unplug the tablet, the xserver crashes, giving a few moments of screen garbage followed by a return to GDM from which I start a new session. I am not experiencing crashes if the tablet is left plugged in all the time. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek I am running Jaunty Jackalope Beta (currently within a VirtaulBox machine). [Bug 351076] Re: Package xserver-xorg-input-aiptek does not install (Januty beta)
Jon, I notice you've now tagged this with "packaging", which I think is correct. (The program itself installed and worked fine on Intrepid.) The dependencies reported by Synaptic include removing xserver-xorg and replacing it with xserver-xorg-core, which apparently isn't happening. Possibly a matter of exact version numbers, as xserver-xorg-core appears to be in the repository (and indeed installed already). I also notice that the version provided is xserver-xorg- aiptek1:1.1.1-1build1 (jaunty) but the Launchpad overview at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-aiptek gives the version as xserver-build2 so a slight regression there. [Bug 50226] pmount sees a microdrive as non-removable, so won't mount it.
Public bug reported: I use a digital camera with a CF II form factor microdrive. If I insert this card into a PCMCIA (PC card) adaptor and put it in a PCMCIA slot on my laptop, the microdrive shows as a disc in the Places->Computer gui file manager (Nautilus). It is however not mounted. If I try to mount from Nautilus, I get an error message from pmount that the device is non-removable so cannot be mounted by pmount. If I switch to a terminal, I can mount and unmount the drive manually ('mount' and 'umount'). There is no problem copying files from the drive once it is mounted. If I use a (dirt cheap, generic) usb card-reader then the microdrive mounts automatically, appearing on the desktop and unmounting via right click and 'eject'. This is the behaviour that I would also like when attaching it via the PCMCIA slot. So the problem appears that when it is attached to the PC card bus, pmount doesn't recognize it as a removable device. ** Affects: pmount (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- pmount sees a microdrive as non-removable, so won't mount it. https://launchpad.net/bugs/50226 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Something very similar happening for me too with a Kingston U3 1MB usb drive. I found that the drive does mount correctly if it is plugged in before the computer is started, but that plugging in to a running system only occasionally (about one in five attempts or less) leads to a mounted device, sometimes several minutes after plugging it in. Very similar problem here, automounting a 1GB Kingston DataTraveller U3usb flash drive. (Other generic USB flash drives automount instantly.) Dmesg shows long loops of 'new device' before the device is finally correctly identified and added after a couple of minutes wait. I'll attach dmesg tail, the first 178 or so lines are just looping! [Bug 40850] Re: Mounting my USB drive take long
I've now tried out the DataTraveler on two other machines running Ubuntu, one 5.10 and another 6.06. The problem occurs on both machines, though the one running 5.10 seems to be rather quicker to recognise the device as automountable. Typically it takes 45 seconds to a minute or two to get round to mounting it. 6.06 can take long enough to go to town, have three coffees while reading the paper, do some shopping.. A further quirk is that on the system running 5.10, if I first insert the Kingston DataTraveler I normally get the 'looping' behaviour. If I insert another, generic, USB flash drive, not only does that mount normally but the Kingston device nearly always mounts *immediately* afterwards. This does not seem to work on the 6.06 system... However, the problem may be to do with the quirks of the Kingston DataTraveler with the U3 feature that shows up as an external CD drive. This is preloaded with applications (for Windows) to allow you to (for example) take your own copy of Firefox with you from machine to machine. Is there perhaps a problem with a single physical device that announces itself as two logical ones? Are we looking at hardware or bios quirks here? I do know that the device behaves fine with my Windows 2000 workstation. I'm considering removing the U3 feature from the drive and reformatting it as a standard VFAT device to see if this helps. (However, this is a onetime operation, once the U3 pseudo CD has been removed it is not user restorable.) Just to clarify my previous post; I'm away from any network that I have access to, so turned off network manager (using the gui) and then used a dialup modem via GnomePPP to get on to the net. Under these conditions Evolution seems inclined to start in offline mode. When put online it contacts the mailserver and then asks for password. [Bug 140460] Re: Evolution : On startup unable to connect to POP server
I've now had another look at the possible interaction with Network- Manager. Basically I removed Network-Manager from my system and manually configured the (wireless ethernet) connection to the internet. The symptom of asking for for the password and then looping continued to exist. So it looks like Network-Manager is not the culprit. Using the PPP connection (set up through GnomePPP) and a modem card continues to work properly; Evolution then starts offline; when put online by clicking the connect button it connects and just asks for the password once, going on to work normally. As others have observed, starting Evolution in a terminal with the --offline option also works. (Although I notice that the camel error messages still appear in the console). For me what happens here is that when using the --offline switch Evolution still appears to start in online mode; I guess that this means it is detecting the network connection and switching itself to online immediately. Anyway, the password behaviour is then normal, which is at least a fix of the symptom. I can also confirm that shutting down Evolution in folders other than inbox leads to a clean start. As a temporary fix of the symptom I've added the --offline switch after --component=mail in the Gnome Panel launcher for Evolution. This seems to work ok for now. (I also notice that if running in conditions where the password dialogue loops, cancelling the first dialogue before entering a password leads to normal correct operation if mail pickup is initiated manually.) -- Evolution : On startup unable to connect to POP server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140460 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 113514] Re: Not possible to choose selected panel resolution
I'm also having similar trouble. What I'm trying to do is to set up the internal panel of my laptop as the default (primary) display at its native 1280 by 800 (widescreen) and the external display connector to 1024 by 768, the native resolution of the projector I wish to use with it. The secondary (external) display is mirroring the main display. (Previously I have set the laptop to 1024 by 768 when I wish to use the external connector to drive the projector, which has worked well for the projector but leaves me with a smeary display at non-native resolution on the laptop). My experience so far with displayconfig-gtk is that I *can* achieve this setup, but only after going through the process several times, experiencing mysteries such as changed stated resolution of the main (laptop) display when I make any change to the secondary (external) display. Sometimes displayconfig-gtk exits without doing anything after settings have been changed. Sometimes the internal display gets changed to a non-native (lower) resolution, sometimes not. Even when a satisfactory output is achieved, with both displays running at the resolutions I want, I find I can break it by using the function keys (fn F7) to cycle between internal only, external only and both displays. I'm using a Lenovo 3000 N100 with Intel 945 integrated graphics using the i810 driver according to my xorg.conf I'm happy to work more on this in response to specific developer questions; at the moment I'd not want to set up an external projector in front of an audience... ** Attachment added: "xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10188280/xorg.conf -- Not possible to choose selected panel resolution https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113514 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 113514] Re: Not possible to choose selected panel resolution
Checking things out further, I have to add that of course Gutsy's OpenOffice Impress is a version that now supports multiple displays for presentations and it is actually better to using an extended display over two monitors (one the internal panel, the other the projector); OpenOffice Impress now detects the two available screens and give the choice in Slide Show Settings of displaying on Monitor 1 (primary), Monitor 2 (the external display) or Both. Thus it is now better to use and Extended Default Screen on the second monitor and take advantage of the new feature in Impress rather than clone the internal display. I have to say that using displayconfig-gtk to change to this worked first time for my system and the fn F7 toggling of displays on and off now works perfectly for me too. This is also a problem for those of us who wish to edit files stored on other machines on a local network. Then I remembered that I've never been able to open files on other machines on the (Samba) network from within Gimp. Ok. downloaded release-upgrader-0.87.26-debu ran sudo ./hardy It hung as before. I waited about half a minute and then tried to stop it with ctrl-c in the terminal. This didn't stop the process. I then tried the Gnome Panel "Force misbehaving application to quit" utility; this removed the frozen window but did not return the console to a prompt. I then opened another terminal tab, found the process number for "hardy" and issued "sudo kill 'hardy process number'". This successfully stopped the process and returned me to command prompt in the first console with the message "Terminated". Ok, version four... I'm afraid still freezing as before. The system on which it is giving trouble is a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop, with a Centrino duo processor. Gutsy backports repository is turned on, as is the 'Partners' one. Folding at home is installed and running, but I'm stopping it before trying the upgrader. [Bug 186465] Re: "distribution upgrade" hangs during update to hardy
It looks much better. Certainly the process runs without the freeze right at the start. Unfortunately my system hasn't got quite enough room on / for the upgrade process, so it did stop later on. (As it should.) After this stop, the gui window greyed out and had to be killed again. But that is much less of a problem, and maybe only happens if the process is stopped by another technical difficulty. I will clear space on the machine and try again later today. [Bug 186465] Re: "distribution upgrade" hangs during update to hardy
Ok. Looking good. (I still can't complete the upgrade because I don't have enough free space on / yet, I need to repartition so it isn't trivial on a production machine.) However, when I run 0.87.27-test2 from the command line the process starts properly and runs on to the point where it tells me I need more space. After this, when I click (OK) to cancel, the window now displays the information about resetting to the pre-upgrade state before exiting properly. Busy day with work tomorrow (Thursday) so may not be able to do final testing until Friday. I think you could safely start the SRU process before then... [Bug 186465] Re: "distribution upgrade" hangs during update to hardy
Test case seems to be working fine here; I'm using the Lenovo 3000 laptop which this bug was preventing me upgrading. update-manager --proposed started up an instance of the Update Manager that offered me a button to upgrade to 8:04. Upon pressing that button I was asked for a password, taken through the information panels about what would happen and asked to confirm. On confirmation, the system has started the upgrade. It is currently downloading the files; sadly it appears that traffic shaping is quick to cut in, so it will be midnight here before they are all downloaded. However, it is behaving correctly so far, thus I believe the workaround/fix as uploaded to 'proposed' works properly. [Bug 205990] Re: [hardy] splash screen disappears after a few seconds
I had this problem with an upgrade to Hardy Heron, but only with the latest kernel. Reverting kernel to the previous one worked fine. The fix given at the top of this bug worked for me; the UUID for the swap file was correct in /etc/fstab but wrong in /etc/initramfs- tools/conf.d/resume. Editing this file to the right value and then updating initramfs has cured the problem. I don't know how the UUIDs got out of step; the system was repartitioned using the gparted live CD immediately before the upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04, but the swap partition wasn't changed at that point; also, reverting to the previous kernel version worked fine (presumably the associated ramfs image still held a correct UUID?). Thanks for the solution anyway. [Bug 149964] I couldn't agree more...
This is not merely annoying, it means I can't upgrade several machines that I look after for other users because they would simply, and rightly, conclude that I'd broken their ebay search result emails. (I know it isn't exactly what is happening, but it is what appears to be happening from the point of view of a normal human user who just wants to be able to click a link in an email and have it do the Right Thing (TM)) I myself am getting irritated at having to copy and paste the item number in the link every time I spot something interesting in an emailed search result. As for what this does to German language links that use (common) extended characters, check out the examples given in earlier posts. I imagine this applies to other languages too. [Bug 40473] Re: wacom-tools udev scripts should point to /dev/input/wacom instead of /dev/wacom
I've just been trying to test the recent modifications and fixes, by running the Feisty daily build CD from yesterday (Thursday 5th of April). It still has the old 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu7 versions of wacom-tools and the xserver-xorg-input-wacom and the the xorg.conf file still has /dev/wacom rather than /dev/input/wacom as the device name. How long before the changes are likely to arrive in Feisty daily builds? I'd like to be able to test them 'out of the box'. I know that if I install, I will be able to download the 1:0.7.7.7-0ubuntu1 versions of wacom-tools and xserver-xorg-input-wacom (from the normal repositories, so they've got that far) and that if I then edit the xorg.conf device name, all will work fine. So my problem is not whether the fix will work, but whether it will be included in Feisty in time for release. [Bug 40473] Re: wacom-tools udev scripts should point to /dev/input/wacom instead of /dev/wacom
I'm glad to say that today's Feisty daily build disc works 'out of the box' with my Wacom Graphire tablet, both in Live CD and installed modes. No need to edit or download anything, it just works as it should. Thanks to Timo and others for this. [Bug 40473] Re: wacom-tools udev scripts should point to /dev/wacom instead of /dev/input/wacom
I have installed a clean copy of Feisty beta (with updates) on a machine. I then installed Timo's packages wacom-tools_0.7.6.4-0ubuntu1_i386.deb and xserver-xorg-input-wacom_0.7.6.4-0ubuntu1_i386.deb (with gdebi). Now what happens is that /dev/input/wacom and /dev/input/tablet-graphire are created, as links to /dev/input/event4 (or whatever event number). I plug the tablet in, they are created, I remove it, they vanish. I believe this is good so far. If I use sudo wacdump then it works fine for all device names, /dev/input/wacom, /dev/input/tablet-graphire and /dev/input/event4 (or whatever number...). By works fine I mean gives right device name, knows which tool is being used - mouse, pen, eraser - and gives pressure and click information. Next I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that it points to /dev/input/wacom and restarted the machine. Now I start the Gimp and go to File=>Preferences=>Input Devices and click the Extended Devices button. "No extended input devices" it says. This is very bad... So unless I have done something stupid (possible of course), the first stage of the process works fine and installs nice consistently named devices that are linked to the tablet, but trying to make the X server make them available to Gimp doesn't work. [Bug 40473] Re: wacom-tools udev scripts should point to /dev/wacom instead of /dev/input/wacom
Works for me now with 1:0.7.7-0ubuntu1 under feistly beta, though I still appear to need to edit xorg.conf. I also note that while things are fine with Gimp and extended input devices if the system is booted with the tablet attached, hotplugging a tablet after boot still doesn't seem to make it appear as an extended input device. Happy to do more testing on this, of course. And delighted to have a useable Wacom available in Gimp, especially pressure sensitivity! Thanks to Timo and others for this. I'll maybe do another fresh install and check from scratch again in a couple of days; the basic functions should work out of the box without having manually edit xorg.conf... > Hotplug is still at its infancy, hopefully by feisty+1 wacom-tools > supports input-hotplug provided by xorg-server. Now it is just a hack, > it seems. I'll not expect too much of that for now then. Needing to be plugged in on boot is not as good as hotplugging properly, but for most users most of the time it is good enough as we don't often change tablets. (By the way, I noticed links for /dev/input/wacom and /dev/input/[specific device type name]. Might this allow the use of multiple devices one day? Or is it intended for auto-configuring the features and quirks of individual devices?) [Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup
You are not alone... I've just experienced this bug on a new installation of Lucid final release on an old PIII machine with a matrox video card running a 5:4 ratio flat panel (not native 1024x768). The panels would show correctly after any change to their properties, but be incomplete again at the next login. My workaround was to change the screen resolution to 1024x768, after which the panels show correctly on login without any tweaking. I did see an odd 'flicker' effect on opening the screen, when the right hand edge (where the panel display is missing) was refreshed after the rest of the screen. -- Panel utilities not shown on startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572550 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
