[Bug 54530] Re: [Bug 54530] Re: [Bug 54530] Re: Virtual filesystem mounts could use more restrictive mount options

2006-08-09 Thread Matthew Garrett
While the kernel can create files that ignore the mount options, I
believe that the behaviour is consistent with the rest of the vfs - that
is, a /proc mounted noexec will not allow files to be executed, even if
the kernel has created them with the execute bit. Having a noexec/nosuid
/proc was an acceptable workaround for one of the more recent Linux
kernel vulnerabilities, so there's a chance that it'll help avoid
future attacks.

The /dev case is more subtle. Vbetool mmaps /dev/zero, so is probably
what's getting upset there.

[Bug 56259] Re: pmi action hibernate should not override no hibernation setting

2006-08-14 Thread Matthew Garrett
Those settings were used when the primary means of calling actions was
directly via the acpi scripts. pmi has to be called by root, so an
unprivileged user cannot trigger hibernation without the aid of a policy
daemon. Policy daemons should be configured appropriately by the admin,
as is the case for any other piece of software provided to users.

[Bug 37163] Re: Ipods react badly to checks for EFI partition tables

2006-06-17 Thread Matthew Garrett
The alternate gpt tends to be at the end of the disk - I suspect that
the EFI partition table check attempts to read from the last block
declared by the ipod, the scsi layer chokes (due to that block not
actually existing) and then everything falls over. The real issue is why
the USB quirk is executed when the hardware is plugged in directly, but
not when via a hub.

[Bug 58384] Default firmware for acx11 is non-ideal

2006-08-31 Thread Matthew Garrett
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.17-6-686

The acx11 driver notes that the 2.3.1.31 firmware doesn't really work,
so it's probably not optimal to have it as the default for acx11s.

[Bug 67847] Re: BIOS BUG: MCF area at e0000000 is not E820-reserved

2006-10-23 Thread Matthew Garrett
Your BIOS has claimed that the MCFG area is at e000, but has not
reserved that range of memory. As a precaution, the kernel has disabled
MMCONFIG (a mechanism for accessing the extended configuration registers
on pci-e cards). This is a fault with your BIOS, not the operating
system, but you're unlikely to ever notice.

[Bug 55966] Re: ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts.conf problem.

2006-09-08 Thread Matthew Garrett
No, this is incorrect. That fonts.conf fragment changes the default sans
font to BPG Rioni on all systems, not just Georgian ones. This isn't
acceptable, since the quality of its latin characters is worse than in
the default font. There's a couple of issues here:

1) the fonts.conf fragment is malformed and so works unconditionally
2) fontconfig fails to recognise the BPG fonts as Georgian. I can fix this
easily.

I'm working on point (1), but it's more awkward than expected.
