[Bug 146710] Re: backlight brighness control does not work (Samsung Q45 with Nvidia GForce 8400M)

Same problem Q45 with the Intel Graphics card. That's definitely not a
graphics card/driver problem. Downgrading has been reported to work.

[Bug 189471] Re: Audacious does not play .wma files when extended unicode characters exist in the filename or the path

2008-11-30 Thread LA
I cannot really confirm whether it is playing or not, since I am stuck
with another bug and the Audacious doesn't play at all now :-) in 8.10 .
But I can confirm that at least the displayed filenames are now in
proper international characters and not like %20%28...

[Bug 395116] [NEW] Pidgin massive synchronization notifications halt metacity

2009-07-03 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

How to reproduce the bug:

2 computers ( one with ubuntu using metacity - 1 MSN account )

- Add on MSN account as many contacts as you can. Probably 200-300 contacts.
This account is set up in Pidgin and works perfectly on one computer. The
contacts are stored on the local contact list and the server as well.
- Disable the account on the first computer, and log in via Pidgin on another
computer. The system should retrieve contacts from the server and add them to
the local list.
- While logged in, on the second computer, delete all the contacts of the
specific account. Log out.
- Go back to the first computer and log in. Now Pidgin will pop up one
synchronization notification for every contact that is on the local contact
list of the first computer, but not on the server; asking whether the contacts
on the local contact file should be sent back to the server.
- The user has to click YES or NO for every single window. There is no option
for massive accepting or refusal.
- After 25 or so notification pop ups at the same time (the user has no
opportunity to click so fast, so that's going to happen for sure), the
graphical environment will stop responding.
- Problem can be solved temporarily by logging into the console and killing
pidgin
- Problem can be solved permanently when deleting the local contact database,
so that Pidgin doesn't worry about the contacts syncing (or might there also be
an option in Pidgin preferences, no idea)

[Bug 320154] [NEW] Vinagre crash by connecting

2009-01-22 Thread la
Public bug reported:

If I will connect with Vinagre to some VNC-Servers the Window close
after click connect. If I start Vinagre by the terminal I get the same:

mich...@michael-desktop:~$ vinagre test.dyndns.org:5800
The program 'vinagre' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 348 error_code 1 request_code 143 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 189471] [NEW] Audacious does not play .wma files when extended unicode characters exist in the filename or the path

2008-02-05 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: audacious-plugins

Hello, I am using Audacious 1.3.5 in Ubuntu Gutsy. The ugly plugins set
is not installed. I have a file called KuroSiwo.wma .

1. When the file is placed on the desktop, and opened by Audacious, it will
play perfectly
2. When it is placed in a folder like "Ελληνική Δισκοθήκη" it doesn't play. The
filename in the playlist shows like %20%32 and it complains it cannot find the
file.
3. If I rename the file containing greek characters, having it on the desktop,
it will not play either.
4. Mp3 play fine no matter what characters are in the filename

It has obviously to do with the fact that greek characters exist in the
filename

[Bug 175227] 2.6.22-14-rt halts during boot on some computers, without the nosmp noapic nolapic kernel options

2007-12-09 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-rt

Fresh installation of Ubuntustudio 7.10 on an ACER Aspire 5102 .

The system boots, the Ubuntustudio splash appears. The halts at the same point
(even for hours), unless I keep pressing ANY key (even alt or ctrl) until it
gets into the graphical interface.
Switching to the boot terminal ( Alt+Ctrl+F1 ) I noticed that it waits for me
to press any key, in order to proceed one step further in the boot process.
The same happens if I shutdown the system. It doesn't shutdown unless I press
any key for 2-3 times.

I finally found sth similar reported in ubuntuforums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=448792 ), by another acer 5100 user,
and the proposed solution worked.
They proposed adding nosmp noapic nolapic as kernel boot parameters in the
/boot/grub/menu.lst

The problem didn't occur
- with the same ubuntustudio version, freshly installed, on my desktop PC.
- after downgrading my laptop to the "-generic" kernel ,without any kernel boot
option
- on an older installation of ubuntu Feisty, on the same laptop.
therefore I consider it as a potential bug.

[Bug 175227] Re: 2.6.22-14-rt halts during boot on some computers, without the nosmp noapic nolapic kernel options

2007-12-10 Thread LA
Yes. Using just the NOAPIC option doesn't solve anything, computer halts
as described above, unless keys are pressed. I forgot to keep a log of
that, if you need it let me do it.

Using just the nosmp option, causes a lot of errors, mainly "Unable to
locate IOAPIC for GSI 10" also for GSI 11, 16 . Then "hda lost interupt"
and then it doesn't mount the root file system and gives me a
commandline which I can't do much within.

Using just the NOLAPIC option, boots quiet fast, but when the X boots,
it gives an error message "Failed to initialize HAL" and then no
ethernet, no wireless working etc.

I attach the logs concerning the nolapic boot.

[Bug 84469] Gnome-vfs FTP file transfer : wrong order replacing files on a remote FTP server

2007-02-10 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

This issue refers to the Gnome native FTP support, which is accessible
via the main menu Places > Connect to server > Public FTP ... I detected
the error one month ago, on Ubuntu Edgy amd64.

Let's say I have a website on an FTP server. I used the (gnome) 'Places
> Connect to server' menu to connect to my server as FTP. I got a
nautilus window displaying remote files, and I also opened a window with
the local files. Then I copied and pasted the files from my local folder
to the remote server . The files to be uploaded already existed on the
remote server, so there were 198 files all to be replaced by their new
versions.

It asked me: Files exist. Replace them? I selected yes to all...

And then. The stupid, look at what it did: It popped up a window saying
"preparing transfer". Then it deleted all the old files first, while
preparing the transfer, and AFTERWARDS started putting the new version
of theirs one by one. The result was that the site was more or less down
for two hours and about two hundred of visitors got a file not found
error (it is a popular site).

[Bug 84475] [gnome-schedule] GUI behaves wrong

2007-02-10 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-schedule

Just installed gnome-schedule v1.0, by using Synaptic, on an Ubuntu Edgy
amd64. Greek locale

I noticed the following bad behaviour of the GUI when running as a plain user:
I insert a new task. It doesn't make any difference if it is recurrent or once.
I press OK and I can see again the list of the scheduled tasks.

- Isn't the user meant to be asked for giving their root password?

- Every ten seconds, a new line appears in the tasks list, as a copy of
the last inserted task. The list is getting longer and longer. If I
reboot the program, I get only one instance per task. If ran from a
terminal, there is once a gtkWarning:

/usr/share/gnome-schedule/mainWindow.py:249: GtkWarning: gtk_list_store_remove:
assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, list_store)' failed
  self.treemodel.remove(iter)

and every ten seconds:

no crontab for user

- The column of "Date Time Settings" displays "On Friday at Feb" no
date, no time.

- When a task on the list is focused, the "properties" and "delete" buttons on
the toolbar OR the menu should work. Instead:
a. When I click on the "properties" button, I get a popup "Please select a
task" but the task is always selected! Therefore the tasks cannot be edited.
if ran from the terminal, there is the error:

Mon Feb
local variable 'hour' referenced before assignment

b. When I click on the delete button, I am asked for a confirmation, but
then the task stays were it was, on the list. If I reboot the program,
it is THEN that the task is removed off the list. No error displayed on
the terminal

- I don't know if this is meant to be hapenning, but no entry appears in
the crontab (obviously cause it is an anauthorised user, nobody asked
for a password). Events don't happen.

if gnome-schedule ran with sudo:
tasks are not displayed in the list. No error popup is displayed, but if I
check the terminal window there is a "no crontab for root" notification:

ALSO, these bugs occur for both authorised and unauthorised users:

- Help > About: There is a popup displaying the version. The close
choice on the button or the window menu does nothing, the window stays
there... If I click on the other button (i think in the english locale
should be sth like attribution) then all buttons halt and are not any
clickable.

- Help > Manual: doesn't exist, could not find files.

- Icon gets installed in Application menu instead of System menu

2007-02-17 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Network card: Atheros, in an ACER 5102 laptop
When problem appeared: After upgrade from Ubuntu Dapper to Ubuntu Edgy

What happens: System > Admin > Network , [Wireless Connection] ->

There is a field named ESSSID: which is both a dropdown menu and a
textfield. While in Ubuntu Dapper it used to list the available networks
for the user to choose from, currently the dropdown list is empty. BUT

[Bug 77101] Re: Realtec HD soundcard cannot record

2007-02-17 Thread LA
No I installed 1.0.14 rc2, it doesn't appear to have fixed the issues

* Sound still comes only from the right speaker

* Error displayed when booting: /alsa-
kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:562:hda_intel:azx_get_response timeout ,
switching to single_cmd mode

* This sound device has two inputs: LINE IN and MIC IN
Recording is now possible both from microphone or from line in BUT
there are not separate control channels for the recording and the playback. It
is possible the adjust the volume from both input devices only by the iGAIN
control, which means you can't mix them or adjust their sound levels to be
equal.

[Bug 77259] Re: Atheros: network-manager-gnome doesn't list the ESSIDs

There is a field named "Network Name (ESSID)" . This has got a dropdown menu,
which is always empty.
The 'display' of the dropdown works as a textbox. So, if i type there the
ESSID, and press enter, it connects to my network.

[Bug 77259] Re: Atheros: network-manager-gnome doesn't list the ESSIDs

2007-01-03 Thread LA
Sorry. This was a mistake, it refers to what happens in my network
settings panel, as described in #77256.

What you asked is the following:
- Right click on the NM icon, on the taskbar
- Enable wireless connection
- When I click on the icon of NM, I get the tag of "Wireless Networks", but
there are no networks below it, but the menu separator. At the same moment, the
'iwlist scan' command lists plenty of networks
- Then there are two options, 'Connection to another wireless network' and
'Create another wireless network'. When I click the first one, I get a window
which allows me to type the ESSID in a textbox.

[Bug 82200] Not notifying the user for network status

2007-01-29 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

Wireless card: Atheros on ACER5102 wlmi

When I click on the admin > network settings icon, about 1-2 minutes
pass without anything to display. Sometimes the user is in hurry so
clicks again and again. After a few minutes there is one window for
every click. What's wrong: The delay (without any notification), and the
fact that the user can have multiple administrative interfaces for the
same thing, at the same time.

Also: if the wireless network requires a network key, and the user
provides wrong key, the systems appears to be connected anyway.
Especially if the IP is not DHCP-provided, then there is no way to tell
that the network is not there, apart from a ping or a browse.

[Bug 77101] Realtec HD soundcard cannot record

2006-12-24 Thread LA
Public bug reported:

using Ubuntu Edgy, on a three-months old laptop ACER 5102, AMD64 x2. My
sound card is detected by Windows as Realtec HD. I have the following
problems in Linux

* Right balanced sound! When Ubuntu starts, only the right speaker works.
If I go to the mixer and play with the balance, after two or three times I move
the bars, the sound gets balanced to both speakers. I tried to solved this, but
using a rexima command in one of the scripts, but it was the one that works
only when I get into the terminal. I will have to find the init script that
works when I get to gnome
* The worst problem is this one: I can't get sound in! Microphone and line
in gives no input to programs such as Audacity, Ekiga etc, so I have to log in
to Windows in order to make recordings and talk to VoIp phone.
If this helps, Windows appears to recognise the sound card as TWO
devices. When I try to record in windows, I have to select as a device the
Realtec HD Sound IN and when I play the Realtec HD Sound out.

[Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks LTS 12.04 14.04

2014-05-27 Thread LA
In Ubuntu 12.04-12.10 I had solved this problem by moving the bookmarks
from the toolbar and the menu, to "Unsorted Bookmarks". Back then,
bookmarks which were not in the menu, did not get tracked by hud and
therefore did not create an issue any more.

After having upgraded to 13.10, the issue is back. I haven't confirmed
that unsorted bookmarks get tracked again, but I start assuming that
this is the case.

Hi. I think that the duplicate status is wrong. I have this issue also
when not hitting the alt-tab key (the topic of the other issue).

[Bug 1005174] Re: HUD Service high CPU usage with Firefox

2013-09-20 Thread LA
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 968533 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/968533

The issue is still active and it is not a duplicate. I confirmed with
Firefox 23 on Ubuntu 12.10. Lately the unity menu integration does not
come as an addon. So, the previous solution (to disable that if ones has
high CPU load) does not work.

I found another solution, which is not optimal, but solves the problem
to a certain usable extent. The problem was that there were hundreds of
bookmarks in the bookmarks menu and the bookmarks toolbar. Some of them
were dynamic RSS bookmarks, which means that they kept growing by the
time. So HUD had to index all these bookmarks.

The solution was to move all the useless bookmarks from the bookmarks
menu to the "unsorted bookmarks". The latter do not appear in the menu
and therefore do not have to be indexed by HUD. After I did this, still
HUD requires a little bit of loading, but it is much faster and, most
important, does not halt the entire system.

I still believe there is an issue with HUD here: the entire adventure with the
hundred features indicates to me that HUD's indexing is sub-optimal: it keeps
re-indexing the same things that have already been indexed before, probably
there is no (sufficient) caching or so. Another possibility could be a limit on
the number of the bookmark items being indexed by HUD.

[Bug 968533] Re: Alt-tab to Firefox sends Firefox to 100% CPU; unity-panel-service to 80% CPU and hud-service to 20-80% CPU

2013-09-20 Thread LA
The issue has a misleading title. The issue occurs generally when
hitting the ALT key. I confirmed with Firefox 23 on Ubuntu 12.10. Lately
the unity menu integration does not come as an addon. So, the previous
solution (to disable the globalmenu addon if ones has high CPU load)
does not work.

I found another solution, which is not optimal, but solves the problem
to a certain usable extent. The problem was that there were hundreds of
bookmarks in the bookmarks menu and the bookmarks toolbar. Some of them

optimal: it keeps re-indexing the same things that have already been

[Bug 987060] Re: massive memory leak in unity-panel-service and hud-service when invoking the hud on Firefox profiles with large amounts of bookmarks

2012-10-03 Thread LA
I tried the solution that was suggested above, but it didn't work for
me. CPU load explodes even after enabling the Global Menu addon, and
Firefox becomes irresponsive for a couple of minutes. This repeats
whenever I type some command in HUD. My only solution was to disable the
Global Menu addon, I am missing the feature, but at least I can keep
browsing the internet...

[Bug 1027539] Re: Lubuntu installer crashed on installing grub

2012-07-22 Thread LA
During the installation, the installer suddenly asks "Choose a different
device to install the bootloader on" suggesting /dev/sdb (which is
actually the USB stick).

Before the user has a chance to respond, there is another dialog
"Installation is complete. You need to restart the computer in order to
use the new installation". which is actually covering the dialog before.
If you grub and move the restart dialog, you get this strange window
effect.

[Bug 1027539] Re: Lubuntu installer crashed on installing grub

2012-07-22 Thread LA
So, let's say you know that /dev/sda is the right partition to go ahead
with, this is what you get " Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' has
failed. This is a fatal error". The same happens if the user choosed
/dev/sdb as well. Computer is unusable after a possible restart.

[Bug 886057] Re: nautilus menu bar disappears

This bug also affects me using 12.10.

* Is this reproducible?

No, I haven't managed to find ways to reproduce it. It happens quit
regularly and causes a lot of delay when working with nautilus. The
above suggestion for filling in the RAM/Memory is not enough to explain
my problem, because I also have it without filling in the RAM and
accessing the swap.

* Is that happening to nautilus only?

Yes

[Bug 1320020] Re: [Inspiron 1470, Realtek ALC272, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2015-08-14 Thread Nam La
Same here.

Just installed Ubuntu 14.x LTS to avoid issues with my Broadcom 43142 (I
tried Fedora first.

This is a less-than-a-week old Asus X555LN that had W8.1 installed from
factory and completely removed from the Hard Drive.

* Secure Boot has been disabled.
* No dual boot here.
* Sound worked fine in Windows 8.1, Fedora 22 (unfortunately, WLAN did not and
that's why I decided to try this Ubuntu LTS) and Windows 7 (I decided to try W7
just to do a Dual Boot but then I desisted and installed Ubuntu).
* Sound works fine through headphones.
* Toggling between speakers and headphones does not resolve the issue.
* doing
 $ alsa force-reload
does not resolve the issue.
* Disabling auto-mute via
$ alsamixer
does not resolve the issue.

[Bug 1320020] Re: [Inspiron 1470, Realtek ALC272, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2015-08-15 Thread Nam La

* No dual boot here.
* doing
 $ alsa force-reload
does not resolve the issue.
* Disabling auto-mute via
$ alsamixer
does not resolve the issue.
