[Bug 553498] Re: Dell Studio 1558 (Arrandale) hangs on resume from suspend

2010-04-21 Thread Kamal Mostafa
I have developed a test fix for this problem. It reliably fixes
suspend/resume on my Dell Studio 1558 and should have the same effect
for the Studio 1557 and Studio 1555 models. No other models are
affected by this change. The fix is currently being reviewed for a
post-Lucid release update (but will not be included in Lucid at release
time).

@Andy and other testers...

A test kernel including the fix (as well as the source patch itself) are
available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kamal/dell_155x_resume/
To install this kernel, download the two .deb files and install them using
sudo dpkg -i *kamal*.deb

Feedback to this bug report will be much appreciated.

[Bug 519664] [NEW] squid FTBFS: dh_installinit: command not found

2010-02-09 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

lucid-i386.squid_2.7.STABLE7-1ubuntu4_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

This was fixed once already in squid (2.7.STABLE7-1ubuntu3), but that
change was accidentally omitted from the subsequent 1ubuntu4 revision.

(This most likely happened because lp:ubuntu/squid source branch appears
to be stale at present, yielding the 1ubuntu2 revision).

[Bug 501373] Re: [lucid] FTBFS due to incorrect use of -lVIEW

2010-02-10 Thread Kamal Mostafa
This build failure was fixed in ball (1.3.1-2). However, that revision
is FTBFS for a different reason (sipArgsParsed not declared). Another
sync is pending as LP: #520086.

-

ball (1.3.1-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Add python-sip4 as an explicit build-dependency (fixes an FTBFS)

ball (1.3.1-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Updated to new upstream release 1.3.1 (Closes: 551241)
  * Switched from autoconf to CMake (Closes: 552809)

ball (1.3.0-2) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  [ Andreas Hildebrandt ]
  * Increased dependency to python-sip4 to version 4.8.2, which
would need to be adjusted for lenny (4.7.2). The real (unexpressable)
dependency is to have the same version at build- and run-time. [Steffen]

  [ Charles Plessy ]
  * Documented informations in ‘debian/upstream-metadata.yaml’.

[Bug 573120] [NEW] acpi_backlight=video does not work

2010-05-01 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

[Ubuntu 10.04 LTS kernel through upstream kernel version 2.6.34-rc6]

Kernel boot param "acpi_backlight=video" does not enable backlight
support as intended. Setting it actually ends up enabling the video
output switching feature (the same as "acpi_display_output=video" does).

It is not possible to force backlight support, since no code ever
enables ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_FORCE_VIDEO.

2010-04-25 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@wpmills: The crash looks like it has been fixed in the latest release
of hamlib (1.2.10-3). That version of hamlib is included in the
forthcoming Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid). An unofficial version of hamlib
(1.2.10-3) for Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) is also available in the ~ubuntu-
hams PPA: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-hams/+archive/ppa

After installing the ~ubuntu-hams PPA hamlib version, grig -m 1608 no
longer crashes. (Of couse I don't really know if its functional since I
don't have the Ten-Tec radio).

Please install the ~ubuntu-hams PPA version and test the behavior, then
post your results to this bug.

[Bug 568611] Re: Screen brightness control fails on Dell Studio 1558

2010-05-07 Thread Kamal Mostafa
I have developed a PRELIMINARY TEST FIX for this problem, which is
caused by a dysfunctional ACPI _BCM backlight brightness control method
in the Dell Studio 1558 firmware (and likely the other 155x models).
The fix involves overriding the use of the _BCM method with the Intel
GPU i915 driver's opregion backlight control method. The fix will
therefore affect all i915-based systems that support the opregion method
not just Dell Studio systems. This does fix the brightness keys on the
Dell Studio 1558 and might also fix other i915 systems with backlight
brightness control problems.

A binary kernel including this PRELIMINARY TEST FIX (as well as the source
patch) is available here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kamal/i915_brightness/
To install this kernel, download the two .deb files and install them using:
sudo dpkg -i linux*kamal*.deb

Note that the test kernel also includes the fixes for LP: #553498 and
LP: #573120 (even though the acpi_backlight= boot option is not required
for the Dell Studio 155x with this kernel).

After rebooting, verify that "dmesg | grep backlight" yields the following
line, signifying that the backlight will be controlled by the i915 driver:
ACPI: ~kamal TEST acpi_set_backlight_register

Feedback to this bug report will be much appreciated, from Dell Studios
or any other i915-based systems.

2010-05-07 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Jerone - This fix has not yet been submitted to the kernel lists, since
I'm still working on polishing the patches -- I consider this to be a
"PRELIMINARY TEST FIX" only, but I would like to get confirmation from
the other bug subscribers that the method works without problems for
them. The patches as they currently stand are available for inspection
(at the same URL as the binary kernel). The patches will be sent
upstream to linux-acpi and linux-kernel once they're ready.

2010-05-05 Thread Kamal Mostafa
@Andy and other testers: I'm not sure why this didn't make it into
2.6.32-22.33. But it appears that it is staged for release in
2.6.32-22.34 and a pre-release version of that is available in this PPA:

   https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive/pre-
proposed?field.series_filter=lucid

Thanks for your continued ongoing assistance folks.

[Bug 524183] [NEW] Sync hamlib 1.2.10-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-02-18 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

 affects ubuntu/hamlib

Please sync hamlib 1.2.10-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

Justification for FFE:

The 'hamlib' package provides core ham radio "rig control" libraries used
by virtually all the ham radio applications which offer rig control.

Upstream development of hamlib has been very active [1,2] but Debian and
Ubuntu have been stuck on an old version for about a year, due to the
retirement of the main Debian uploader for the package. (I have assumed
that role; the 1.2.10-1 release proposed for sync is my packaging).

The new hamlib 1.2.10-1 release at Debian delivers support for many new
ham radio models and important fixes for numerous other radio models.

I have tested the 1.2.10-1 release in Lucid. The package builds and
installs fine [3,4]. I have attached the ouput from a simple library
test of hamlib's CLI utility 'rigctl' [5]. I have also tested the
library with actual ham radios and other applications which use hamlib
(fldigi, grig, my own code).

Attachments:
[1] hamlib-1.2.10-1-NEWS (new NEWS entries)
[2] hamlib-1.2.10-1-new_upstream_ChangeLog (new ChangeLog entries)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

The Ubuntu delta 1.2.9-1ubuntu1 ("Python 2.6 transition") has
been ported to this version.

Changelog entries since current lucid version 1.2.9-1ubuntu1:

[Bug 524183] Re: Sync hamlib 1.2.10-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-02-19 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Hi Stefan-

The "conflicts with self" syntax allows a package to conflict with
others providing a replacement for it, as explained in more detail at
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-
relationships.html#s-conflicts . Previous versions of hamlib also used
this syntax -- its not a new behavior for the proposed 1.2.10 version.
If this is an "unusual" thing to do, please let me know.

[Bug 490326] Re: Please sync fontconfig 2.8.0-2 from Debian testing (main)

2010-01-08 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Lucid needs a fontconfig update:

A fontconfig vs. defoma issue is causing other packages (e.g. unixcw) to
FTBFS in Lucid. That problem has been fixed upsteam in Debian as
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=560252 .

[Bug 505004] [NEW] unixcw: FTBFS in Lucid: fontconfig vs. defoma

The root cause of this FTBFS is apparently
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=560252
so sync to newer fontconfig (LP: #490326) might resolve this bug.

[Bug 511973] Re: libexplain FTBFS on powerpc: TIOCGHAYESESP undeclared

2010-01-24 Thread Kamal Mostafa
This problem is fixed upstream in version libexplain 0.19.D001-1
(currently stuck in Debian unstable). In the newer version, this use of
TIOCGHAYESESP as well as numerous other constants are protected by
#ifdef -- so this is likely to be just one of many similar platform
specific build problems.

[Bug 512056] [NEW] Sync libexplain 0.19.D001-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-01-24 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

Please sync libexplain 0.19.D001-1 (universe) from Debian unstable
(main)

The current version in Lucid (0.16.D001-*) is FTBFS on various platforms
for various reasons, many of which appear to be fixed in the Debian
unstable version.

Note that libexplain 0.19.D001-1 seems to be stuck in Debian unstable
because of a stale shlib dependency on 'libcap1' but a fresh build in
Lucid indicates no such dependency. (Debian to be advised).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

This change (ubuntu1) can be dropped

libexplain (0.16.D001-1ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

... http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=541174 suggests that
the problem may have been a gcc bug but is unreproducible now anyway.
I have verified that the Debian unstable package builds fine in Lucid
without needing -fno-strict-aliasing.
