[Bug 248851] Re: ooo-filter-binfilter not installed by default

2008-11-11 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
The biggest issue with this, is that the error when someone tries to
open one of his old documents doesn't make any sense when this package
is missing. OpenOffice.org will ask the user to select the filetype and
fail in a weird way when the user chooses the correct format.

Since many users will be migrating to OOo from their previous office
suite, it is very important they can open their old documents properly.
It's a big problem this package is not installed by default.

The summary is incorrect in that it is only needed for old OOo 1.x
files. Quite a few other formats also need this package and since most
documents are archived versions, converted versions aren't easily made.
In addition, Ubuntu doesn't offer any mass-converter. It would be nice
if ODF already dominated everything, but unfortunately the older formats
are still very important.

[Bug 248851] Re: ooo-filter-binfilter not installed by default

2008-12-03 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
"Except that Ubuntu hasn't even existed for more than 4 years."

Of course. My point was just that I wouldn't let legacy support depend
on just Ubuntu's age and releases. If there is an official guideline on
this, of course that would be the way to go forward.

"Also the only thing this package really provides that might be useful
is the pre-ODF OpenOffice.org 1.0/StarOffice 5.x support. If users have
files in other formats such as Excel, Word, etc for example when coming
over from Windows all those are formats still supported even without
having this package installed."

I don't really see the relevance of the other formats in this bug. What
you write is unfortunately not fully true. Many users coming over from
Windows will also have old StarOffice & OOo documents.

"As I understand it this package really is just a complete copy of the
old OOo 1.x codebase beaten into shape to provide support for the old
obsolete pre-ODF formats that OpenOffice.org previously used. You said
in a previous message that quite a few other formats are supported only
via this package, but what are they? I uninstalled and saw at least most
of the formats still in the list of supported formats in the file
open/save dialogs."

That is the whole problem I'm pointing out. Even when this package is
not installed, OOo will show all these formats as supported. When you
will actually try to open a document however, OOo will fail with a
really strange error message. I've attached one of my old documents for
testing.

"Do you still get pre-ODF OpenOffice.org files or just non-ODF
Excel/Word files? Those Excel/Word files will work regardless of if this
package is installed."

Yes. Again I don't see the relevance of those other formats, they are
from a completely different office suite.

[Bug 248851] Re: ooo-filter-binfilter not installed by default

2008-12-03 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I don't think the association with OOo is a problem. I think that should
be kept. OOo should get a patch though, which will allow it to display a
meaningful error in this situation. Now the behaviour is rather weird.
(That's why I attached the file, so you can see what happens when you
try to open such a document without this package installed.)

If you would want to change the associations too. I guess adding a
seperate desktop link to this package which has the associations for
just these formats and also links to OOo would solve this problem by
kind of supporting selective associations. It should have an additional
entry that hides it from the menu though.

"Then why were you bringing up the other formats in your previous email,
they apparently are actually supported even without this package despite
what you originally claimed?"

I guess you refer to spreadsheet filters for Writer in the 'apt-cache
show' output I copied. I didn't intent to make those seem important. I
hoped this sentence "The filter indeed mainly covers StarOffice &
OpenOffice 1.x formats." would support this. It was meant to confirm
your observation. Sorry this was not clear.

[Bug 248851] Re: ooo-filter-binfilter not installed by default

2008-12-03 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I don't think that's a good message though. A solution should be found
to solve this.

I suspect that if this bug would be reported at OOo, they'd complain the
support for these formats shouldn't have been seperated. As far as I'm
aware all other versions of OOo do have support for these formats
included, so this does seem reasonable.

This is why I propose to either just include this by default or to patch
OOo so it handles unrecognised files in a proper way.

[Bug 248851] Re: ooo-filter-binfilter not installed by default

2008-11-14 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
The filter indeed mainly covers StarOffice & OpenOffice 1.x formats. apt-cache
show says:
  - the old StarOffice 5.2 formats
  - StarWriter 1.0/2.0
  - StarWriter/DOS
  - *Writer* filters for
+ Excel
+ Lotus

I guess this will depend on how far you want to go back with supporting
people. Ubuntu releases 2 times a year, so that would mean 6 releases
ago is only about 3 years ago. I'd say you'd want to go back at least
5-8 years considering the fact that still much software form that time
is very popular.

The current situation seems to be that most people running recent
versions of Ubuntu still have a large archive of files in the older
formats. Those files cannot be easily converted all at once, since they
are stored in multiple places. When someone tries to open such a file
now, the error message won't make any sense. A regular user might be
worried about their document.

Thus the choice needs to be made whether Ubuntu only supports ODF and considers
the rest already obsolete. In this case OpenOffice.org should present a message
the system administrator needs to install extra software to let the document be
read.
The alternative would be to include this package by default.

The decision would have to be made based on how many years Ubuntu wants
to go back with support.

I guess in a few months it will be less important for me. I'm a student
and according to the legislation here all educational institutes will
have to have full support for ODF. Unfortunately though as for now, I
still receive a non-ODF document from time to time.

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2009-06-19 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems i have found a solution which should work for at least Compal
notebooks. I found this based on information I found in one of the
duplicate bugs. It seems at least the ICH9 controllers have two modes of
operation. One is called IDE compatible or no-AHCI mode and is enabled
by default. This uses the ata-piix driver. If you manage to switch the
controller to AHCI mode it should use the ahci driver instead, which
does not seem to have any problems.

You can check what mode your controller is in using lspci. It will show
either IDE or AHCI depending on what mode is set. You can also check the
dmesg output for ata-piix or ahci.

Switching the controller to AHCI mode can be quite tricky. I was able to do it
using a Dos program from Compal's site. Here are the instructions:
1. Make sure syslinux is installed
2. Get https://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/ahci.dsk.gz
3. Gunzip the archive and put it in /boot
4. Add the following lines to /boot/grub/menu.lst:
title FreeDOS AHCI switch disk
root(hd0,1) #copy this from the other Ubuntu item
kernel /usr/lib/syslinux/memdisk #if your /boot is on a different
partition, copy this file to /boot and put /boot/memdisk here
initrd /boot/ahci.dsk
5. Boot the new boot item from grub (just press enter on the time & date
prompt, there is no config.sys)
6. Run ahci_en

This should enable AHCI mode. You can verify this by running lspci or checking
the dmesg output. I built this bootdisk myself based on FreeDOS and the program
from Compal's website. You can also disable AHCI again with this disk.
I was able to do a clean Jaunty AMD64 install, do an update and run quite a few
applications after I had done this. fsck doesn't find any problems at all after
this and there were no strange crashes anymore.

I suspect that mainly Compal notebooks come with this mode set to no-AHCI,
which is why there are so many reports of this problem with Compal notebooks.
For others without Compal notebooks with this problem, verify your hardware is
in no-AHCI mode and try to switch it to AHCI mode through a similar tool. My
bootdisk probably won't work.

I understand that AHCI mode also gives better performance, so this
should be an optimal solution. The problem with the ata-piix driver in
this kernel should still be considered a bug though.

I produced the attachment with Firefox 3.5pre4 from the firefox-3.5
packages. The crash also happens with the 3.0 version included in
Jaunty.

I'm not sure whether this backtrace is actually useful. I suspect this
is actually a crash in the mozilla-mplayer plug-in and it takes the
whole Firefox with it because browser plug-ins still run in-process.
What would be a suitable approach to find the cause of the crash in the
plug-in?

The version of the plug-in included with Jaunty, seems to be the most
recent one.

[Bug 367451] [NEW] Jaunty AMD64 works horribly on my notebook

2009-04-26 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

Intrepid AMD64 worked fine on my notebook. But once I upgraded to
Jaunty, I got into a horrible situation. Programs kept crashing, I got
kernel panics and it turned out almost every file my AMD64 Jaunty had
touched had problems according to fsck. I also tried a clean reinstall,
but the problems stayed.

Now I'm running the 32-bit version of Jaunty, which works great.
Intrepid AMD64 also worked without problems. It seems Jaunty AMD64
introduced something which causes data corruption with my hardware,
which gives these results. I have no clue where the problem could be or
how to find out where it could be.

[Bug 66483] Re: Sound crackles & snaps when SDL volume not set at 100%

2008-12-23 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
The problems with sound crackles in the ALSA driver seem to have to do with
assembly code that wasn't always turned on in older versions. For more details,
see this bug:
http://bugzilla.libsdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649

I've rebuilt the Ubuntu libsdl packages with --disable-assembly which seems to
solve this issue. Those packages can be found here:
http://haar.student.utwente.nl/~julius/debs/hardy/libsdl/

Try those when you have problems with the ALSA driver.

[Bug 193847] Re: Problems with VIA PCMCIA USB controller

2009-03-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems PCMCIA slot is broken. I was able test the hardware with MS
Windows and there the hardware gives similar problems. Also other cards
don't seem to work properly in the slot.

Should hardware defects be properly indicated somehow or shall I just
close this bug?

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2009-07-09 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Probably the bug is still there as long as there are no ata-piix related
changes in the changelog. Other than that it appears data corruption bugs and
system stability aren't very high priority with the Ubuntu devs :S
Even with my controller in AHCI mode, I've experienced several different types
of crashes & hangs with the AMD64 kernel (no data corruption anymore though!).
I'll be trying out Karmic soon on my hardware, I guess we should hope Karmic
won't be such a catastrophe as Jaunty.

[Bug 61250] Re: xorg consumes 99.9% CPU and hangs on Kubuntu Dapper

2007-07-24 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I have a system with the same problem.
It's running Dapper right now, should I upgrade it to Feisty?

The problem occured with the i810 driver at first, used for the onboard
video on the mainboard. The screen would just go black. I could ssh into
the box fine & CPU usage would settle after a while.

The screen still stayed black though.

I thought it may be a videodriver problem & hoped to solve the problem
by adding a GeForce FX 5500, but it seems the same problem still exists.

[Bug 27430] Re: Firefox deletes the clipboard on startup; middle-click paste also broken

2007-08-16 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
To fix the middleclick problem in your profile, you should go to
about:config in Firefox and change the setting:
middlemouse.contentLoadURL to true.

Quite a painful bug indeed. Because this behaviour is something that can
generally expected from a browser (and also works fine in every other
browser I tried in Ubuntu). It gives Firefox a bad mark in Ubuntu. I
know that bugs shouldn't be filled with notes such as these, but I feel
this could hurt Firefox unfairly when compared to the other browsers
Ubuntu offers, because for users it may not be clear from first sight
it's a really a mistake and not actually intended.

[Bug 33511] Re: Middle-click launch url broken

2007-11-02 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I wrote a small note in the wrong bug about this. I'll repeat it here:

I'm wondering why the Firefox package has been mutilated in this way but the
other browsers in Ubuntu are left intact. It seems the reasons for this change
(there were problems with this functionality in Firefox?) should be looked at
first.

[Bug 248392] Re: 32bit libgl search for dri at wrong place on 64bit system

2009-10-25 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this issue on Karmic. I am fully up to date.
I need to do:
export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib32/dri

Before I can run 32-bit applications with OpenGL, otherwise they will
fall back to software rendering (verified with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose).

[Bug 1325282] [NEW] USB microphone inputs not detected by Pulseaudio on Kubuntu Trusty

2014-05-31 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When I connect an audio device using USB, I can only use it to play back
stereo sound. Anything else is not detected. I tried it with two
different devices and they both give me the same result. Neither in KDE

a selectable input device anywhere.

ALSA does seem to correctly detect that these USB devices have a
microphone.

[Bug 1579533] [NEW] Chromium process doesn't close when closing the last window

2016-05-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

This is how the problem shows:
1. I start up Chromium
2. I close its window
3. I start it again, Chromium complains it can't open its profile

When I run Chromium from a terminal, I see that it doesn't close after I
close its window. I have to do an explicit ctrl+c in the terminal (or
kill the processes) before I can start Chromium again without having a
'profile in use' warning.

There are *no* extensions installed. The check box to stay active if any
background app would be enabled is turned *off* as well.

Terminal output:
$ chromium-browser
Using PPAPI flash.
Loading socket Config module ...
Creating backend ...
Loading x11 FrontEnd module ...
Failed to load x11 FrontEnd module.

[Bug 1579533] Re: Chromium process doesn't close when closing the last window

2016-05-08 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
It seems this issue is related to SCIM which is started by Chromium
(when it's not started yet?). Removing all the SCIM related packages
solved the issue.

I suspect this bug is still present for people that need to use SCIM.

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this problem on Ubuntu 15.10. Note that this version does
not contain the xserver-xorg-video-sis anymore, but it does contain the
sisfb module.

Now the vesafb driver is loaded now, but it does not seem to be a
module. I tried to use the instructions from this thread to load sisfb
instead plus updating the initramfs files, but it didn't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1423381

I think that the in-kernel vesafb prevents sisfb from loading or it's
not properly added to the initramfs.

Should I reopen this bug or create a new one?

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
More information, it's possible to load the module with these instructions:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/705878/can-i-fix-my-corrupted-lubuntu-splash-screen-having-disabled-the-graphical-term

Looking at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf there is this comment:
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.

So it seems that the reason this module does not load automatically is
intentional.

Now that the X.org driver for this chip has been removed and it relies
completely on the framebuffer module, maybe it would make sense to look
into slightly better support for the framebuffer modules?

[Bug 945461] Re: The default font used for Qt4 is broken (regarding cyrillic text)

2012-04-30 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I'm about to leave here, but I will make some screenshots later today.

I would not say that Cyrillic needs more attention in the sense that on
Lucid everything worked perfectly fine. I will make a shot in Lucid
(including those characters) and a shot in Precise and you will see
everything looking identical except for the Cyrillic fonts that suddenly
became out of place. It should not be hard to see it because the
Cyrillic and Latin alphabets have many identical characters. For example
А and A should look identical. Same with О and O. Currently they do not
in Qt4 applications in Precise, in Lucid they did.

I'm not a native reader, but I am quite familiar with Russian and
Ukrainian.

Надеюсь эта неполадка вскоре будет устранена :)

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux

2013-12-13 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
With Ubuntu 13.10 it has become a mess. I tried to install it 4 times on
my notebook now. It would go through the complete installation process
and only at the end suddenly the kernel failed to install. I thought I
may have connectivity problems at first. Only after manually doing a
dpkg -i on the kernel deb through a root shell, I saw the error message
about non-PAE.

I hope at least some warning can be added about this, because it's
stupid to go through the whole process and discover at the end it's not
going to work.

[Bug 1001209] [NEW] When connected to a network with a catch-all HTTP filter, apt-get update corrupts the package lists

2012-05-18 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

I need to log on through a webpage before I can access the internet on some
networks.
Before that all HTTP requests are forwarded to a log-on page.

When apt-get update is being run in the background before this log-on
has happened, it will corrupt the package lists with this log-on page. I
need to manually remove multiple files in /var/lib/apt/lists/ then
before I can rerun apt-get update.

When apt-get update gets invalid data, it should not corrupt its package
lists.

[Bug 944695] [NEW] Removing and readding the system tray in KDE doubles its size each time

2012-03-02 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

When you remove and then readd the systemtray in KDE4. Its size is double every
time. This problem is described here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=293472

The people in #plasma cannot reproduce it on KDE 4.8, so they wonder if
Ubuntu maybe patched the system tray.

The expected result is that the systemtray stays the same size. The
extra space it takes up is just empty. There appears to be a bug in a
Ubuntu patch which keeps doubling a certain value.

[Bug 945461] [NEW] The default font used for Qt4 is broken (regarding cyrillic text)

2012-03-03 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Public bug reported:

Since I switched from Ubuntu Lucid to Ubuntu Precise, the fonts in all
my Qt4 applications look significantly worse. Especially cyrillic
characters are not displayed properly. In Ubuntu Lucid everything works
fine.

Cyrillic letters look significantly different, less pronounced than Latin
letters.
Some characters are not included and displayed with a square and a cross (the
Ukrainian і (capital І) is an example of this).
Konsole in KDE4 is completely unusable when cyrillic characters are displayed.

Expected behavour: the fonts should look good. Cyrillic characters
should not look out of place among Latin characters. In Ubuntu Lucid
everything looks fine. I would suggest reverting the set of default
fonts to the set from Lucid if the issues with the current fonts cannot
be solved.

[Bug 990761] Re: acroread 9.5.1 is not installable on Ubuntu Precise amd64 system

2012-05-12 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
This bug is caused by multiple issues.

The AMD64 deb that is available depends on ia32-libs, but this
transitional package is not installable at all on Ubuntu Precise. It
depends on 32-bit libraries that still conflict with 64-bit libraries.

MultiArch support is broken regarding architecture independent packages.
There is no such thing as acroread-common:i386 because acroread-common
is an architecture independent "all" package and the exact same package
can be used with both the 64-bit and 32-bit version. MultiArch somehow
adds :i386 everywhere, but this is nonsense in this case. It should not
do that with "all" packages and just use the plain version.

Of course, it's also silly that acroread can't be compiled for AMD64.

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-06-25 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
At the end here at least, the pid file points to the lowest PID. Could I
check it during the start-up phase as well? Could it be possible the 2nd
instance is already loading before the 1st has a chance to write its pid
file?

Does it make sense that Pulseaudio's respawn option should be turned on,
while it is also explicitly loaded by the log-on scripts? I would say
either it either uses or respawn or it's loaded already when logging in.

[Bug 1296425] Re: pulseaudio is started twice - effectively making device management impossible.

2014-06-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
Yes, it only seems to happen with KDE. I also found that Pulseaudio
installs one extra start-up script for KDE only in /etc/xdg/autostart.
The man pages of these scripts both mention they will use an already
running Pulseaudio.

I think the proper solution is either:
- run Pulseaudio *once* and never again (when logging in)
- fix Pulseaudio's self-detection so that it works when the first instance is
still initializing

As for running Pulseaudio as a specific user, I wonder what would happen
when multiple users are logging onto a system at the same time. Would
this not create a similar conflict with each user's Pulseaudio trying to
use the ALSA devices at the same time?
