[Bug 298481] [NEW] Problem booting raid 1 since upgrading to intrepid (uuid missing)

2008-11-15 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

When booting, the system cannot find the /dev/disk-by-uuid for the root
fs, and drops me to busybox. On checking

/dev/disk-by-uuid is missing the UUID symlink for my raid 1 root,
however the raid is up and running and available on /dev/md0

This has happened during a few reboots recently, and I have had to pull
the machine from the cupboard to see why it wasnt booting. Normally a
few resets and eventually it will work. I have a longer than needed
rootdelay too, but this does not seem the factor since if i set my grub
to boot from /dev/md0 everything is fine. just when it is set to the
raid 1 fs uuid I get the problem

Current the raid is in degraded mode, but this has happened recently the
raid was not degraded also.

[Bug 279409] Re: unable to configure a fixed ip on wired interface on knetworkmanager (intrepid)

2008-10-17 Thread Jools Smyth
Can noone else confirm this? I can't think that it is only my machine.
Intrepid is due out real soon and this will surely be a showstopper for
some users (static IPs can be configured from /etc/network/interfaces
but having it not work from network-manager is not good)

I'm sure the problem is related to there being still some
incompatibility with the latest network-manager API.

2008-11-03 Thread Jools Smyth
Are any developers currently looking at this. The importance should be
decided and imho it is important as a new user should expect to be able
to configure their system with a fixed ip with the provided tools (it is
still possible from /etc/network/interfaces of course). Kubuntu Intrepid
should not have been released with this bug (And strangely enough the
kubuntu site is still not updated - perhaps they have delayed in the
official announcement until some bugs are fixed, or some other reason)

[Bug 57846] sis900 drops tx packets on Foxconn 661FX7MJ-RSH motherboard

[Bug 57849] Add keycodes for wireless button on Acer Travelmate 8100

2006-08-26 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

/usr/share/hotkey-setup/acer.hk would benefit from some additional lines
adding the wireless button on and off keys.

on = e055
off = e056

for example

setkeycodes e055$KEY_F13 # Wireless on
setkeycodes e056$KEY_F14 # Wireless off

This is useful, as you can then configure some keys under X with xmodmap

for example:

keycode 182 = XF86User1KB
keycode 183 = XF86User2KB

And then you can configure hotkeys with kde to do something useful. I
have it set up so that when I press the wireless button, kde does an
ifup on the wireless device (wlan0).

[Bug 60623] Re: Upgrading mdadm package is impossible - can't upgrade while raid arrays active

2006-09-15 Thread Jools Smyth
I'm also having this problem. It tries to stop my "root" raid, which of
course is impossible whilst it's in use.

A developer on irc said they need to disable the stop call in preinst.
and to check how they did it for version 2.5 in Debian.

Would have been nice too if we got a newer mdadm for edgy, rather than a
version from April this year. Especially since the edgy kernel has new
features some of which work better with a newer mdadm.

[Bug 60646] Unable to boot with degraded array

2006-09-15 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

I am running edgy

I have / on a raid 1 device /dev/md0
This is comprised of /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdb1

I am not using evms, but mdadm to manage my devices.

If I remove /dev/hda1 and reboot, the machine will boot up fine, but in
degraded mode (as expected).

If I re-add /dev/hda1 I would expect it to do the same (rejecting hda1
until it has been readded to array)

This is not the case. Instead after re-adding the /dev/hda1 disk i get

mdadm: failed to add /dev/hdb1 to /dev/md0: Invalid argument.
mdadm: failed to add /dev/hdb1 to /dev/md0: Invalid argument.
mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 0 drives - not enough to start the array

mdadm: failed to add /dev/hdb1 to /dev/md0: Invalid argument.
mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 0 drives - not enough to start the array

and then eventually i am dropped into busybox.

[Bug 38438] Re: boot confused after stopping array

2006-09-15 Thread Jools Smyth
The order that mdrun starts /dev/mdx devices seems to be based on many
factors. Degraded arrays can affect the order.

Note this debian bug:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=354705

Which has been fixed by deprecating the use of mdrun. However ubuntu
still uses mdrun (from initfs).

The new edgy boot system uses fs uuid's instead of /dev/md0 /dev/md1
etc. However currently this is not working with /dev/mdx devices.

[Bug 227705] [NEW] hdparm not being triggered with udev

2008-05-07 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hdparm

Since hdparm was switched from init.d to being triggered by udev it has stopped
working on my machine.
Originally I thought it was the missing rule for /dev/sdx disks but even with
that change (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hdparm/+bug/156893) it
is not working right.

The bigger problem is I have no idea how to debug it, since nothing is
outputted on boot in regards to it. I assume it is ran
during the initramfs stage? How should I check to see why it is not working?

my /etc/hdparm.conf has 4 lines like

/dev/disk/by-uuid/---- {
  spindown_time = 30
  apm = 1
}

and the problem is that the disks are not spinning down. This used to
work fine when hdparm was run from init.d

I also tried using /dev/sda1 etc in case the /by-uuid symlinks were not
available at the stage udev is triggering hdparm, but it made no
difference. However I need to reference the disks by uuid (or label) as
they may not always be on the same device. I thought the problem might
also be to do with the disks being set to power on in standby mode,
however after a reboot when they are spun up, the problem still occurs.

Another issue related to this is that there is no easy way to test your
hdparm.conf. Before you could manually run the init.d script but this is
no longer possible. I think this is not ideal, as hdparm configs can be
quite complex, and a missing space between keyword and value etc can
cause problems.

[Bug 106821] Re: smartmontools/smartctl does not work on SATA drives on Linux Kernel 2.6.20-15.27

2007-07-27 Thread Jools Smyth
There was a kernel patch which broke smart over sata. A stock
2.6.20/2.6.21 kernel seems to be fine. Perhaps something was backported
from 2.6.22 on ubuntu where the problem is also in the stock
(kernel.org) kernel.

Thiis is no good for those that have only remote access to a machine. For my
fileserver I would need to carry it out from under the stairs and connect a
monitor up etc. Not something I would want to do.

2007-04-21 Thread Jools Smyth
I build a 2.6.21-rc6 kernel from kernel.org and tried it. The smart
stuff is working fine. It was also working on an earlier kernel. I
should try a stock 2.6.20 kernel to see if it's something specific to
ubuntu causing the problem.

KPowersave 0.7.2 just went into feisty. This version does have support
for button events. However afaik Klaptop does not. So now we need to
just check for kpowersave i guess.

[Bug 84480] power button is ignored by acpi scripts when running kpowersave

2007-02-10 Thread Jools Smyth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

The power button is ignored by the acpi-support scripts when kpowersave is
running. However kpowersave
does not have any capability to manage what happens when power button is
pressed. It can handle lid events though.

from /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh

# If gnome-power-manager, kpowersave or klaptopdaemon are running, let
# them handle policy This is effectively the same as 'acpi-support's
# '/usr/share/acpi-support/policy-funcs' file.

I would argue that letting kpowersave handle something that it can't handle is
not the best idea.
Unless I have missed something ?

[Bug 57849] Re: Add keycodes for wireless button on Acer Travelmate 8100 (fix included)

2007-01-24 Thread Jools Smyth
the file /usr/share/hotkey-setup/acer-aspire-1600.hk
is also suitable for the travelmate-8100 series.

I also un-commented the Wireless On/Off keys in this file. Why are they
commented out? It is very useful to be able to map the "wireless on"
button to something like "kdesu ifup wlan0"

so, on my system i copy

/usr/share/hotkey-setup/acer-aspire-1600.hk to

/usr/share/hotkey-setup/acer-travelmate-8100.hk

uncomment the wireless lines.

and in /etc/init.d/hotkey-setup i added an entry into the Acer case.

Sorry. Ignore last patch. this is a working one.

Of course, other laptops from acer might also share these keys, so it
might be better to add them into the generic acer one?

2007-01-24 Thread Jools Smyth
> (a) the wifi switching is handled in hardware already

on my laptop, in addition to sending a keycode it "turns on/off" the
wireless, but this is not particularly useful unless you have some
script constantly watching for it (It's not switched on/off in a way
which is hotplug compatible) and then "ifupping" the interface. it
doesn't work right with ifplugd anyway, as it doesn't "detect" when it
is on. ifplugd will happily ifdown it though.

> (b) We don't have anything 'standard' to map them to

I forgot to mention that in my last message but i show it in the initial
report. I mapped them to F13 and F14. I realise this isn't ideal, but as
you pointed out there is nothing standard to map them to.

[Bug 73788] Re: Network profiles completely broken

2007-01-26 Thread Jools Smyth
I am running feisty and network profiles do indeed seem broken.

Configure eth0 interface to 192.168.1.10
Create a new profile "test". Click apply.
KNetwork conf then saves the current ip config to Test? (It's unclear - save
selected doesnt seem to do anything?)

Create another profile "Test2" and change ip for eth0 to 192.168.1.20
Save save selected (nothing seems to happen) and apply.
you get a message saving profile.
Hover over both network profiles to see that they have both now got the ip
address 192.168.1.20!

Network profiles do not seem to work. If I am going about it the wrong
way then the bug is still valid as it is completely unintuitive.
