[Bug 233983] [NEW] Wrong source code in repository

2008-05-22 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Public bug reported:

When I run apt-get build-dep smbfs
andapt-get source smbfs

against the 8.04 repositories, I get the source for the main Samba
package when I should get the source for smbfs.mount, cifs.mount and
cifs.unmount.

[Bug 124373] Re: _cache->open() failed, please report

2009-02-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
This bug was originally reported 18 months ago and it now has 23
duplicates. In general, the advice has been to run

sudo dpkg --configure -a
followed by at least
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

while this action seems to have corrected the problem for some users,
others including my self have found that dpkg --configure -a also
fails.

My question is -
What action must be taken to re-enable the ability to update Ubuntu after a
dpkg failure that cannot be recovered with dpkg --configure. I can use neither
update-manager nor apt at this point.

I am running on 8.10 and got the following result from dpkg

Setting up icedtea6-plugin (6b12-0ubuntu6.1) ...

Processing triggers for libc6 ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place
dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:221: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4'
failed.
Aborted
jonat...@hippocrates:~$ sudo apt-get -f install
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct
the problem.
jonat...@hippocrates:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Processing triggers for menu ...
dpkg: ../../src/packages.c:221: process_queue: Assertion `dependtry <= 4'
failed.
Aborted

A second question is: what is being done to make the low level update
code such as dpkg more robust?

2009-02-10 Thread Jonathan Gossage
I have one other machine which is running a headless server version. The
C and C++compiler package is installed on it and updates are giving no
problems. Since it is headless, I normally do updates on it using
aptitude via SSH whereas on the machine with problems I normally use the
Synaptic Package Manager unless I encounter problems in which case I
will drop down to apt-get or dpkg as required.

[Bug 392911] Re: No icons (files and launchers) on Desktop , no pop-up menu on right click

2009-11-12 Thread Jonathan Gossage
The biggest item that can help this bug along is a backtrace at the
point of the crash. This can be obtained following the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and uploading the backtrace
(as an attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly help us in
tracking down your problem.

Other information that can help - this applies to all who have
experienced this problem.

1. Please attach all your /var/log/dpkg.log* log files to this bug report.
2. Please indicate whether you experienced this problem after a clean install
of the release version of 9.10, or were you upgrading from 9.04 or from an

I have confirmed this problem on Ubuntu 9.10. If the user mis-configures
that package, (for example specifies an invalid password for connecting
to the relay host), nullmailer will ignore the permanent error (554)
returned from the relay-host and will continue trying to send the
message once a minute.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
On the surface, this looks as if it might be a problem somewhere in
X-Windows or the software that sits on top. The first step would be to
capture the last ~200 lines or so of ~/.xsession-errors and post it
here.

The next step is to capture some information about what is happening
during the freeze. The first thing you can try is to do Ctrl-Alt-F1 when
a freeze occurs to bring up a low-level console and run top from there.
If the system won't accept the key combination during the freeze, try
the following. Remember that you can use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to your
desktop.

1. Make sure you have an SSH server running on the machine that freezes.
2. Run a SSH session to your freezing machine from your other machine. Use the
low level console to avoid the possibility of it freezing also.
3. Once you are logged into your target machine, wait for a freeze then observe
what top says.
4. Report back with success or failure, then we can see what the next step
needs to be.

BTW it would be helpful if you set your geographic location in your
Launchpad profile so we know roughly what time you are likely to be
available.

[Bug 401823] Re: (firefox:24993): Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble ahead - overeager XID caching

2009-11-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Here is a post that explains why the "Gdk-WARNING **: XID collision, trouble
ahead" message was added:
 http://osdir.com/ml/svn-commits-list/2009-05/msg01611.html";>
Looking at the patch, it seems to me that the best fix would simply be to use
g_debug() instead of g_warning() to log the message. This would mean that you
would only get it when you were actually trying to debug a GTK/GDK problem.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Something that would be worth trying on your desktop machine once you
have established that the 185.18.36 driver is stable in your
environment, would be to put the new Nvidia driver on and then disable
Compiz. This would give us an indication of whether the new driver is
likely to be the sole problem or whether we have two separate problems
here, one with (potentially) Compiz on your desktop machine and the
other with the NVidia driver on your MythTV box. I want to see you going
well first but then I want to get to the root cause of these problems so
that good bug reports can be submitted upstream and others can benefit
from our work.

[Bug 474294] Re: Freezes system to the point I can't even use the force quit applet. could also be system monitor bug

2009-11-05 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Thanks for the dmesg log.
We are going to have to did a bit deeper into this one. Could you please do two
things for me.

1. Run the following command from a terminal command line:
sudo apport-collect 474294
This will collect more detailed information and automatically attach it to
the bug report.

2. Run the following command from a terminal command line:
sudo apt-get install hardinfo

This will install a graphical tool that provides detailed reports about
hardware configuration. Once it is installed, run the following command from a
terminal:
hardinfo &

This will bring up a graphical tool that will allow you to see a lot
of information about your hardware. You use the left hand pane to select
the major item you want to see and depending on what you select, you may
be able to click in the right-hand pane to increase the level of detail
shown. To create a report from the display click the "Generate Report"
button and to export the report to the clipboard click the "Copy to
clipboard" button.

I would like you to generate the following reports:

1. Summary
2. Detailed display report
3. Detailed Storage report.

and put them into a file that you can attach to the bug report. With
this information I should be able to figure out what the next step
should be.

[Bug 1586835] Re: ssh-agent fighting gnome-keyring on Ubuntu Gnome 16.04

2017-06-24 Thread Jonathan Gossage
I am also experiencing this problem on Ubuntu 17.04. I have seen
suggestions in Internet forums that Gnome Keyring does not properly
support all SSH key formats. I was using a 4096 bit RSA key in the
situation that failed. When I changed to a 2048 bit RSA key the problem
disappeared.

[Bug 1687019] Re: Cannot add a Google account using Online Accounts in Ubuntu Gnome

2017-05-15 Thread Jonathan Gossage
I am still experiencing this problem in 17.04 after trying to install
the fix. Can someone please tell me the full name of the Ubuntu package
that contains the fix so I can verify that I actually have it.

[Bug 1100415] Re: "git commit" fails if gedit is already opened

2016-05-18 Thread Jonathan Gossage
This bug still exists and is not just a configuration issue. If you set
the global git configuration to core.editor="gedit -w -s", you will get
the following result:

jonathan@Aristotle:~/EclipseWorkspaces/AGI$ git commit -sS --status
Failed to register: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:
Method "DescribeAll" with signature "" on interface "org.gtk.Actions" doesn't
exist

error: There was a problem with the editor 'gedit -w -s'.
Please supply the message using either -m or -F option.

This will happen whether gedit is already open or not.

[Bug 1033598] Re: the CAPTCHA challenge in Ubuntu Software Center is much too difficult to solve for a real human being

2016-04-09 Thread Jonathan Gossage
I checked at least 200 captcha entries without finding one readable one.
I also fortunately found the workaround to go to login.ubuntu.com to
create/update my account. This whole fiasco suggests that the concept of
"heat" in Launchpad bugs needs to be reevaluated. Bugs need to be easy
to enter and a system for evaluating the severity of a bug independent
of voting which is essentially what "heat" is is also needed. In
addition, it would be helpful if maintainers were clearly identified in
comments.

[Bug 1171421] [NEW] Boot loader fails to install from Live CD on 12.10

2013-04-22 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Public bug reported:

Unfortunately, I do not know where I need to look to provide further
information. The error dialog was terse and gave no indication as to
what the problem was. If you can make any suggestions as to how I should
troubleshoot this problem I would be grateful. The disk configuration
was as follows:

/dev/sda: 2GB SATA hard drive which was configured to receive the boot loader.
It only had a standard MS-DOS partition table on it.
The drive wasnot used during the installation, except to receive the boot
loader.

/dev/sdb: 120GB SSD SATA drive. This drive was configured as a one
volume LVM group with 4 logical volumes and Linux was installed on it.

/dev/sdc: 120GB SSD SATA drive. This drive was configured as a LVM
physical volume and was not used during the installation.

This was a re-installation of Linux over a previously working system.
The reinstallation was done because an attempt to convert /dev/sda to a
one volume LVM group with 2 logical volumes had resulted in the boot
loader disappearing from it, and I was hoping to repair the situation.

In summary, I expected the GRUB-2 boot loader to be installed on
/dev/sda where the installer proposed it should go and where it had
previously existed.
