2007-11-01 Thread Jan Reucker
Public bug reported:

In Gutsy, the scanner of the all-in-one printer/scanner Epson Stylus
DX4050 is not recognized automatically. However, it perfectly works when
adding the following lines to /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules :

# Epson DX4050
SYSFS{idVendor}=="04b8", SYSFS{idProduct}=="082f", MODE="664", GROUP="scanner"

I can confirm both the bug being present in Karmic, and the workaround.
Installed the pulse audio version of libsdl and the problems went away.

Karmic uses the libsdl-alsa package by default, at least this one was
installed on my system after upgrading from Jaunty. Installing libsdl-
pulseaudio manually fixed the issue for me (Karmic 64-bit).

[Bug 946663] Re: Installer stuck at "Removing conflicting operating system files..."

2012-03-21 Thread Jan Reucker
I guess this is a duplicate of #924660.

I'm affected with the same typical setup (Ubuntu, amd64, installed with
existing partitions for / (with formatting) and /home (without
formatting). For me, the workaround described in #924660 worked (install
without /home and manually add it to the fstab after installation).

[Bug 1116643] [NEW] Power button mode "ask" does not work

2013-02-05 Thread Jan Reucker
Public bug reported:

I'm running Lubuntu 12.10 on a Samsung N145 netbook. When setting the
power button action to "ask" in xfce4-power-manager-settings, the system
does not react to power button presses. I debugged into xfce4-power-
manager and found out that the button press action results in a call to

static void
xfpm_manager_ask_shutdown (XfpmManager *manager)
{
if ( manager->priv->session_managed )
xfce_sm_client_request_shutdown (manager->priv->client,
XFCE_SM_CLIENT_SHUTDOWN_HINT_ASK);
}

where session_managed is 0, so the shutdown request is not sent.

If xfce4-power-manager is started with the --no-daemon command line
option, the system reacts correctly (the logout dialog pops up).

If the power button action is configured as "shutdown", the system also
reacts properly to the power button press and shuts down immediately.

[Bug 1116643] Re: Power button mode "ask" does not work

2013-02-05 Thread Jan Reucker
I was wrong about the --no-daemon option. It only matters when xfce4
-power-manager is started:

- directly after login, the power button won't work
- if I kill xfce4-power-manager and restart it, the power button works as
expected, even when set to "ask"

[Bug 126775] Re: Update Notifier does not appear after upgrade to Natty

2011-06-12 Thread Jan Reucker
Found the root cause of my problems... I'm currently running two
installations of 11.04, one on my desktop PC, one on my netbook. Both
didn't notify me of updates, at least I thought so:

1.) On my desktop, update-notifier works correctly, but I didn't
understand the way the user is notified. In the meantime I discovered
that there is no pop-up message or status bar icon. Instead, update-
manager simply starts in the background (minimized to the dock). I had
to get used to this behaviour. The dock is hidden most of the time, so
if you miss the application starting up, you might not notice it.

2.) On my netbook, things were a bit more complicated. Having learned
the new way of notification, I noticed that update-manager starts up
immediately if I 'sudo apt-get update' manually and updates are
available. So the problem wasn't with update-notifier, but with the way
apt updates are performed. Digging through /etc/cron.daily/apt, I found
out that the update is only performed if the computer is on AC power
when anacron runs the script. I usually don't use my netbook on AC
power. Most of the time I charge it and then carry it around running on
battery (that's what netbooks were made for, BTW ;-).

Issue #2 is very annoying for users of portable devices, maybe I'll open
a new bug for it. This behaviour should at least be configurable. With
6+ hours of battery life I don't think it's dangerous to update the apt
database without the AC adapter connected.

2011-05-06 Thread Jan Reucker
I have the same problem. ath9k wireless on my Samsung N145 netbook is
slow to unusable. Installed the 2.6.38-9.43 kernel from natty-proposed
and the connection rate went up to 100-200kB/s for some minutes, now
it's settled at about 50-100 kB/s. Much better than before, but less
than perfect. I think I'll try the compat-wireless drivers next. I'd
like to avoid turning off hardware decryption on a low-performance
netbook.

[Bug 478177] Re: tuxguitar doesn't start with OpenJDK (java not found)

2010-10-12 Thread Jan Reucker
That helped a lot, thanks for your help! Finally I can use Tuxguitar
again!

Not being a Java programmer myself I totally forgot about the JAVA_HOME
entry in my .bashrc! It still pointed to the Sun JDK that I used some
Ubuntu versions ago. The upgrade to Karmic must have replaced it with
the OpenJDK. I fixed the JAVA_HOME path, now tuxguitar starts (although
it takes eternally to get past the splash screen, which turns grey after
some seconds, until the Tuxguitar window appears after 30-40 seconds).

Thanks again and sorry for the inconvenience.
