[Bug 10550] Re: DVDs with restrictive permissions are unreadable for normal user

2008-11-16 Thread Helmut A. Bender
This is not inly a concern with video DVDs.

I have a data DVD which I try to install into WINE:

-rw-r- 1 501 dialout 48 2008-08-29 08:12 autorun.inf
drwx-- 2 501 dialout492 2008-08-29 08:12 DirectX
-rw-r- 1 501 dialout 109638 2008-08-29 08:12 disc.ico
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout1407832 2008-08-29 08:12 Installer.exe
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 1632129045 2008-08-29 08:02 Installer Tome 2.mpq
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 2512316598 2008-08-29 08:07 Installer Tome 3.mpq
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 2329021933 2008-08-29 08:10 Installer Tome 4.mpq
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 1269323225 2008-08-29 08:11 Installer Tome 5.mpq
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 155380459 2008-08-29 08:11 Installer Tome.mpq
-rwx-- 1 501 dialout 340621200 2008-08-29 08:12 Movies.mpq

I can't install it as user since the group can't read and no user with
this id exists, and I can't install it as root since wine needs to run
as user. I can't use iso9660, since there are files over 2GB.

The only thing that would work is to change thw owner or the
permissions. Both I can't do.

[Bug 375100] Re: package ipppd 1:3.12.20071127-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 127

2009-07-01 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Confirm...

ipppd is not configurable:

Commenting out the offending line enabled configuring/installation, but
/etc/isdn/init.d.functions uses MAKEDEV, too.

Is isdnutils usable at the moment at all?

I second this. I need it to work around Bug#293213.

I'm sorry, but I'm happy I haven't tried to upgrade directly (I'm still
using 7.10). Only to get my keyboard working again I have to investigate
and work around three bugs... and there is much more to get working...
there were times Ubuntu worked out of the box...

[Bug 398132] [NEW] awstats uses the wrong access.log, wrong permissions

2009-07-11 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: awstats

Using Ubuntu 9.04, awstats 6.7.dfsg-5.1, apache2 2.2.11-2ubuntu2.1

/etc/awstats/awstats.conf is preconfigured to access
/var/log/apache/access.log, while the path contains apache2, not apache.

Furthermore the file is only accessible for root.adm, but the cronjob of
awstats runs as www-data, so awstats can't access the logfile and won't
work.

To change the path is no problem, but how could one solve the rights
problem without compromise the logfile?

[Bug 184525] awstats doesn't update

2008-01-20 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: awstats

AWstats 6.6+dfsg-1 on Gutsy

awstats is configured to access /var/log/apache/access.log
Since the correct name ist /var/log/apache2/access.log it won't update its
statistics.

The path has to be corrected in /etc/cron.d/awstats and
/etc/awstats/awstats.conf.

The other problem is, that the cronjob runs as www-data, but the logfile (and
its directory) is only readable for root.adm, not for the world.
I don't know what's the solution for that; it could be security relevant.

Greetings
HAB

Public bug reported:

udev seems not to load the appropriate driver for USB devices.
When I hotplug eg a USB stick, it recognises the event but doesn't do anything
else:

When I modprobe the driver (usb-storage) manually, it works as it
should.

Same with an Palm Zire 71 and the visor driver.

On my laptop with exactly the same versions it works; I couldn't find
any differences.

Workaround: Manual load of the drivers.

If anybody could point me to a possible debugging strategy, I could
investigate further...

[Bug 195559] [NEW] Bug in Apache::AuthDBI publishes passwords

[Bug 212119] [NEW] kmail chops up email addresses from address book

2008-04-05 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 7.10
kmail 4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2.1 (from dpkg-query)
KMail 1.9.6 (enterprise 0.20070907.709405) (KDE 3.5.8) (from KMail Help)

When I enter an email address kmail offers me different addresses from
kaddressbook. If these have the form
"Name, Firstname" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
and I step through some of them with the cursor keys I get something like
"Name, "Name2, Firstname2" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

It seems the parser of the autocomplete part stumples over this form and
takes the comma as seperator from different email addresses and ignores
the quotes.

If I select the address directly with the mouse it works.

[Bug 180696] Re: USB SD card reader is always detected as write protected.

2008-03-06 Thread Helmut A. Bender
I tried a bit further and got the following:

I bought a new SD card with write protect tab and inserted is as
followed:

SD Card, not write protected => Write Protect is on
SD Card, write protected => Write Protect is on
SD Card, not write protected => Write Protect is off
MMC Card (the old one) => Write Protect is off

Reboot Hardy alpha 5

MMC Card (the old one) => Write Protect is off

Reboot Gutsy

MMC Card (the old one) => Write Protect is off

Well. Anything seems fine now. But I don't know why it didn't work and I don't
know why it's working now.
For me the bug could be closed; don't know for Kunjan Shah though.

Greetings
Helmut

[Bug 459471] Re: [Karmic] update-manager-kde: conffile prompt/error during upgrade cause crash

2009-10-31 Thread Helmut A. Bender
I had a similar problem with the update process crashing (configuring
xosview => kdesu segfault).

What I don't understand:
- Why is importance only medium?
- Why 'Will accept right after karmic release'?

Do you know, what that bug means? I tried to update my laptop yesterday. The
update process crashed. I tried to finish it 'by hand', but have now an
unusable laptop; it doesn't boot anymore.
That was my first impression of karmic. I shurely will not upgrade my main
pc... I need it to work and have no time to either try getting it running nor
to reinstall.

In my humble opinion this bug is a showstopper and should be fixed
immediately, so nobody else ever will see this crash!

[Bug 1304805] Re: KDE desktop login failure: "Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?"

2014-08-31 Thread Helmut A. Bender
Hi,
I can confirm the bug is there upgrading Kubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 on a 64bit

I could work around with (as #29):

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qdbus /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/qt4/bin/qdbus

The directory existed already.

It seems there is no qdbus for x86_64-linux-gnu available.
