[Bug 1337749] Re: High CPU usage after resizing a window
Update: I received my new card today (R7 260X). It isn't fully supported under the 3.13 kernel, so I had to go back to fglrx. The same problem still persists. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1337749 Title: High CPU usage after resizing a window To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1337749/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04
Thomas, I'm also having Xorg/compiz CPU usage issues for which I submitted bug report, and I was wondering if you could follow the steps I outlined and see if you get similar results: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1337749 Basically on a fresh boot, launch "top" in a terminal to monitor CPU usage. Then launch a Nautilus window and start moving it around, noting CPU usage. Then resize the window, and try moving it around and see what happens with the CPU usage. For me, CPU usage jumps from 4% to around 30-40% (before/after the resize) using the open source radeon driver. With fglrx it starts higher at around 15-20%, and jumps to 60-70% after resizing. Even just scrolling down a page in Firefox results in ~70% CPU usage. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1293384 Title: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1293384/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1293384] Re: Compiz CPU usage dramatically increased in Ubuntu 14.04
OK I think the problem is much worse than I originally thought. Even moving around the mouse causes massive CPU usage. For example, launch Nautilus, and move the mouse around inside it for 15-20 seconds or so. CPU usage jumps to 25% each for Xorg and nautilus, and 15% for compiz. Similar results occur for any other program like say Firefox. I'm really getting horrible all-around lagginess out of Ubuntu 14.04 because of this out-of-control CPU usage. I don't understand why there aren't widespread complaints about this? Is it only affecting a small portion of users?
[Bug 1337749] Re: High CPU usage after resizing a window
A further comment: I noticed this bug report here which seems to report a similar issue https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1293384 I also figured out that even moving the mouse around causes high CPU usage. For example, launch Nautilus and move the mouse around inside it for 15-20 seconds or so. My CPU usage jumps to 25% for Xorg, 25% for nautilus, and 15% for compiz. Same thing happens with other programs like Firefox. So I searched around some more and found this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/1250277 It seems that there's a chance all of these bug reports might be related. I will test on my office PC soon, which has an nvidia card, and report back.
[Bug 1337749] Re: High CPU usage after resizing a window
Abhijit, you're right scrolling in Chrome "only" uses around 40% or so. I noticed it doesn't have smooth scrolling enabled. After disabling smooth scrolling in Firefox (general.smoothScroll in about:config), CPU usage dropped to about the same level as Chrome. Still extremely high for just scrolling down a page, though. I tested on the office computer today, which is a Core i7-920 w/ 6GB of RAM and an Nvidia GT 9400 with the proprietary driver installed. I can confirm that it suffers from the same problem (also running Ubuntu 14.04).
[Bug 1440602] [NEW] Graphics corruption after suspend/resume cycle
Public bug reported: I have observed two forms of graphics corruption after a suspend/resume cycle: 1) Checkerboard artifacts in approximately the top 1/8 to 1/4 of the screen. This can be observed from the following video, where I am highlighting global menu entries with the mouse: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ez2v03oetppecgx/VID_20150324_020612.mp4?dl=0 A similar effect can also be observed while dragging windows around near the top of the screen. 2) The virtual terminals no longer take up the full screen area, and are surrounded by a pattern which appears similar to noise or "snow" on old TVs. Here's how it appears on my screen: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7hj8qi3w3qc35jb/IMG_20150405_155434.jpg?dl=0 While these two issues seem quite unrelated, they both seem to happen _only_ after a suspend/resume cycle, so the underlying issue might be related between them. Again, for the record: I was able to reproduce this bug w/ Fedora 22 Alpha (4.0 kernel, XOrg 1.17, Gnome 3). It isn't as obvious as it is in Unity, but it's there. [Bug 1337749] Re: High CPU usage after resizing a window
Cristopher, After upgrading to xserver-xorg-lts-utopic (Xorg 1.16), the CPU usage for desktop animations is down by about half - presumably due to the new GLAMOR optimizations. I suspect it may be reduced even further with the improvements in Xorg 1.17. With Catalyst, upgrading from Xorg 1.15 to 1.16 made no difference. But considering all the other problems I've had with Catalyst, I suspect that the poor 2D desktop performance is probably due to Catalyst itself, and not Xorg. It's been another 10 days since I last posted, and I still haven't encountered this bug again. I have no idea if it was the new kernel version or the BIOS that "fixed" it - I updated them both within a couple of days of eachother, so I am running the latest BIOS that Christopher linked to. Of course it could also be that I'm on a lucky streak, since I've never been able to consistently replicate the bug - but before I updated the BIOS + kernel it was happening on approximately a weekly basis. I sort of doubt that the BIOS would be the issue though (but you never know), since I've had this laptop since April 2010 and I've never faced the issue while running Windows 7 (I just switched over to Ubuntu in May). Steve, I tried to replicate your results by running echo mem > /sys/power/state and pm-suspend on AC power while docked, and then pm- suspend again while undocked, and it seems to work fine. I am experiencing the same bug in Ubuntu 14.04. My main monitor is landscape 2560x1440, and secondary monitor (on the left of the main monitor) is portrait 1920x1200. Is there any fix in sight? And is this confirmed to be a bug in nautilus? The Ubuntu lock screen always follows the correct behaviour, but the desktop is what gets distorted after a reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1168705 Title: Multiple monitors with different orientation leads to stretched wallpaper when waking up. [Bug 1168705] Re: Multiple monitors with different orientation leads to stretched wallpaper when waking up.
I did some preliminary examination of the nautilus source code from the Trusty repo. There is a helper object which is used to change the desktop background, in libnautilus-private/nautilus-desktop-backround.c (this file was actually removed in upstream: https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=372c60d3f8590280df23f457a67652adec369697) The actual scaling and drawing of the desktop background is done in gnome-bg.c in the libgnome-desktop package. If/when I get the chance, I'll try to play around with it and see if I figure it out.
I've confirmed that this bug is due to nautilus, but haven't been successful in fixing it (except for a workaround, described at the end of this post). The steps to reproduce the issue are: 1) Set the wallpaper using either the system settings dialog, or gsettings from the terminal (either method will display the wallpaper correctly) 2) Shut down nautilus by typing "nautilus -q" in a terminal 3) Launch nautilus again, and the wallpaper proportions will now be incorrect (the picture will be overly magnified on the larger monitor) In upstream, gnome shell is now responsible for rendering the background, and nautilus simply renders an invisible background over it and places the icons on top, as per these 5 commits on Feb. 20th, 2013: https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=f0f36c876e4810b190a82e3a953d9263c106447f https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=9f99ba3506d5cf1584d9afa952e11aed17deac2f https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=8b4a83ea80bf657cd8be754786e5f9daf7d5cc52 https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=07d2ca86237fac8b5bddc4e619e43dfc813bc5e7 https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=372c60d3f8590280df23f457a67652adec369697 Applying the above patches to Ubuntu's nautilus gives strange results (severe flickering). So for now, I just made myself a simple workaround. I wrote the bash script below and added it to my startup applications: #!/bin/bash gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-options "stretched" sleep 5 # give a few seconds for the wallpaper to change gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-options "zoom" Basically you need to change the wallpaper mode, and then change it back to what you had originally (in my case "zoom"), and the wallpaper will be redrawn corretly. I hope that helps whoever else might be experiencing this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1168705 Title: Multiple monitors with different orientation leads to stretched wallpaper when waking up. [Bug 1337749] [NEW] High CPU usage after resizing a window
Public bug reported: Background: Symptoms are 50-120% CPU usage when scrolling (especially Firefox), dragging around a window, resizing windows, basically any 2D graphics rendering on the desktop. This happens both in fglrx and the open source radeon driver. I started my debugging process by changing various settings, restarting, running "top" in a terminal, launching a Nautilus window, and quickly dragging it around with the mouse in circles while watching the CPU usage rise to around 50%. Resizing the window makes it jump to 100%+. Xorg and compiz are the culprits, with the CPU usage being split around 50/50 between them. Reproducing the issue: After a lot of searching I found some tips in the Arch Wiki article for the open source radeon driver, and I put together the following xorg.conf: Section "Module" Load "dri2" Load "glamoregl" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Radeon 6670" Driver "radeon" Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" Option "AccelMethod" "glamor" EndSection After applying these settings, launching Nautilus and dragging it around only resulted in about 4% CPU usage each for xorg and compiz. Then, resizing the window (click and hold a side, and just keep moving the mouse left and right) made Xorg jump to 70% and compiz 50%. After that, when I start dragging the window around, CPU usage is back to around what it was originally: About 25% for compiz and 15% for Xorg. This exact behaviour happens after each reboot: The CPU usage is initially low when dragging the window around, but resizing it somehow messes things up and it never goes back to normal after that. I'm using a Radeon 6670 right now. I'll be receiving an R7 260X in about a week or so, so I won't be able to test with the exact same hardware, but I'm expecting at least similar behaviour since I also swapped in an R7 250 and was having the same issues. [Bug 1228406] Re: [LENOVO 3249CTO] suspend/resume failure
I've had this issue ever since I first put Ubuntu (13.04) on my laptop in May. I updated my kernel to 3.11.1-031101-generic 2-3 weeks ago and it hasn't happened since. I don't know if it's just luck, or if it's actually been fixed (there have been other times where it hadn't happened in a while, but usually it happens at least once every few days). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1228406 Title: [LENOVO 3249CTO] suspend/resume failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1228406/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
