I've had this issue ever since I first put Ubuntu (13.04) on my laptop in May. I updated my kernel to 3.11.1-031101-generic 2-3 weeks ago and it hasn't happened since. I don't know if it's just luck, or if it's actually been fixed (there have been other times where it hadn't happened in a while, but usually it happens at least once every few days).
