[Bug 221518] Re: broken .menu file

2008-07-03 Thread Emmet Hikory
In hardy GNOME with genpo 0.9.6+dfsg.1-0ubuntu2, menu, and menu-xdg
packages installed, I did not experience the described issue with not
showing additional items in the menus. Installing the update gave genpo
an icon in the Debian menu, and did not appear to affect genpo
operation.

[Bug 252330] Re: [needs-packaging] linuxsampler

2008-07-28 Thread Emmet Hikory
The licensing of linuxsampler remains the same as that described in bug
#84451. The problem is not that it is non-free (as there is a wide
variety of non-free software in multiverse), but that the license is
considered to be self-contradictory. It both claims to be GPL (and is
largely based on GPL code) which includes the provision that one may run
the program, while also restricting use for commercial purposes. As
such, it becomes undistributable. If linuxsampler were to change to a
different license upstream that restricted use for non-commercial
purposes, it would certainly be eligible for inclusion in multiverse.
Alternately, if it were to change to be GPL, it would be eligible for
inclusion in universe.

Just for clarification, as of this writing, the distributed linuxsampler
is under GPL 2.0 + "commercial exception". The commercial exception
reads "LinuxSampler is licensed under the GNU GPL with the exception
that USAGE of the source code, libraries and applications FOR COMMERCIAL
HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE PRODUCTS IS NOT ALLOWED without prior written
permission by the LinuxSampler authors.". The relevant section of the
GPL (2.0) is section 6, which includes in part "You may not impose any
further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted
herein. You are not responsible for enforcing compliance by third
parties to this License.". This is generally interpreted as not
permitting the imposition of additional restrictions such as the
commercial exception.

[Bug 252330] Re: [needs-packaging] linuxsampler

2008-07-28 Thread Emmet Hikory
The licensing issues are well known upstream, and have been discussed
multiple times on the mailing lists (I'd point you at the archives, but
sourceforge doesn't maintain stable URLs for mailing list messages:
search the archives for 2005 (and early 2006)). At one point it was
thought that the restriction was added to CVS after the 0.3.3 release,
although it was later discovered it had been there all along (according
to the current FAQ on the linuxsampler homepage).

Some participants in past threads have noted that such a license makes
it not meet the standards of either the Open Source Iniitiative or the
Free Software Foundation. Although the source code is available, it may
not be entirely correct to call it either "open source" or "free
software", depending on your interpretation.

One interpretation of the license restrictions allows upstream to
distribute linuxsampler (although no other party). Using this
interpretation, upstream has begun to provide binary packages for a
variety of distributions. It may be possible to ask that they include
Ubuntu in their list of supported installation targets (currently that
includes Debian, Gentoo, SuSE, WIndows, and Mac).

Specifically including only /<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. is also interesting in the
case where there is some other domain including the string "ubuntu" that
provides email addresses for use: while these email addresses are
completely valid to use as maintainer addresses in some contexts, they
should not be used as maintainer addresses in Ubuntu.

[Bug 161803] Re: starfighter package missing libstdc++5 dependancy

2008-08-24 Thread Emmet Hikory
No,Bugs against PPC are valid bugs. It's even understood (and apologies
for leaving it "incomplete"). The issue is more that it's really hard
to fix, especially for previous releases, due to the nature of the way
that the Ubuntu archive works. That said, it can be closed because it
appears to have been fixed (including for PPC) in hardy (8.04).

[Bug 253016] Re: New upstream version (6.1) for netbeans

2008-08-27 Thread Emmet Hikory
I'd like to request an FFe exception for this update. The underlying
libraries upon which netbeans relies have all been updated in intrepid,
but the netbeans source itself cannot be built without many of these
dependencies. I'm extremely uncomfortable uploading a source which I
cannot build on a clean system to the repositories, and so am waiting on
source and binary NEW in order to do so. I find the packaging
relatively acceptable, and an improvement on the packaging for the
previous release of netbeans. If the exception is approved, I'd expect
to upload this weekend or so (depending on the build time for the
components required for this to build).

[Bug 296516] [NEW] bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly

2008-11-10 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb

When using bzr merge-upstream to pull a new revision, debian/changelog
should automatically be updated with the recommended version number and
"New Upstream snapshot" when pulling from trunk, or "New Upstream
version" when pulling from an appropriate tag. In the simple case where
there are no conflicts, this allows the user to simply use debcommit to
push the updated state of the package to the bzr repository for the
package. In the more complex case, the user may need to adjust a couple
things before being able to use debcommit, but can use dch normally to
further update the changelog in preparation for debcommit. For extra
portability between distributions and compatibility with standard
practice when using VCS management of packaging, the special target
"UNRELEASED" should be used in the changelog when it is updated (e.g.
dch -v 1.2.3+bzr7477-1 -D UNRELEASED "New upstream snapshot").

[Bug 296516] Re: bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly

2008-11-11 Thread Emmet Hikory
Lookiing at the patch, I don't see it changing the target to
"UNRELEASED". As many developers rely on this to indicate whether a
given version has been uploaded, it is probably worth adjusting this as
well. Other than that, this looks exactly like what I wanted.

Now, to address the reason it might not do this: I'm guessing that the
result would probably be unsuitable for uploading to Ubuntu or a PPA
directly (as it seems to encourage a revision of -1). By using
UNRELEASED, the tool encourages the developer to double-check the
version and target before uploading, which protects against this to some
degree.

[Bug 295677] Re: Please sync sl-modem 2.9.11~20080817-1 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main).

Changelog since last sync from Debian 2.9.9d+e-pre2-5:

  sl-modem (2.9.11~20080817-1) unstable; urgency=medium

* New upstream release. (Closes: #354908, #489289, #457637, LP: #144090,
#269855)
* Adopting sl-modem. (Closes: #471888)
* Removed the following patches since they are applied upstream:
+ patch to define URB_ASYNC_UNLINK if not set
+ patch that adds alternative MODULE_PARM function (module_param)
+ patch removing the inclusion of config.h
+ patch making a biarch build with lib32 package versions
+ patches fixing buils with kernel versions 2.6.16, 2.6.18 and 2.6.26
* Remove cmd.patch and pcireg.patch as they are applied upstream.
* Used quilt patch system.
  + Moved slmodem-class-simple-to-class-meins.diff to debian/patches/
+ 01_Makefile.diff: Makefile cleanup to not loose the user-specified
kernel version string.
+ modem_group.diff: set the default device group to "dialout".
+ 02_dial_string_size.diff: enlarge dial string buffer to 128 bytes
  + 03_Makefile_2.6.12.4.diff: workaround in drivers/Makefile for a kernel
2.4 check accidentialy matching 2.6.12.4.
  + 04_sregs_init.diff
  + 05_st7554_license.diff: changed the MODULE_LICENSE string to
"Dual BSD/GPL" since the license is actually a BSD license clone.
  + 06_slmodem-class-simple-to-class-meins.diff: patch for
class/simple_class transition.
+ 08_ungrab_winmodem.diff: helper module to tell the kernel to keep away
from unsupported PCI id numbers.
+ 10_drop_privileges.diff: slmodemd privilege dropping patch.
  + 11_logfile.diff: place debug log in /var/log/slmodem.log.
  + kernel-ver.diff: workaround for pre-2.6.18 kernels.
+ README.diff: Dropped the TROUBLESHOOTING section from README and adapted
the feedback section, mentioned the transfer of the modem business to
Conexant.
+ debug_level.diff: debug log file is not for end users. Users shall use
-l .
* Added fortify_source.diff patch to fix FTBFS with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2
  compile flag.
* Synch'ed ungrab-winmodem.c from

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ungrab-winmodem-20080126.tar.gz.
* Remove debian/control.backup* as I don't see any use for them.
* Update Standards-Version to 3.8.0.
* Added watch file.
* debian/rules: slusb support ends at 2.6.24, hence add a check for kernel
sublevel, to prevent the attempt to install non-existing slusb.ko. Thanks
to Maurizio Avogadro for the suggestion.
* Translation updates: Swedish, German, Basque, French, Italian, Czech,
Portuguese, Finnish, Japanese and Russian (Closes: #501038, #501043,
  #501065, #501102, #501108, #501213, #501225, #501701, #501632, #501593).
* New translation: Arabic (Closes: #501196).
* debian/control: Added Maurizio Avogadro to Uploaders field.
* debian/sl-modem-daemon.init: changes from Ubuntu
+ sl-modem-daemon initscript waits for aplay (from alsa-utils) to report
the card, as it appears in /proc/asound/cards before it is actually
available to slmodemd. This extra check defeats this race.
+ Remove hard and soft ulimits for locked-in-core memory. This daemon
unfortunately needs quite a bit of memory and it needs to be in core
because it's doing the real-time modem DSP. This deals with LP: #144468
and probably other bugs too.

[Maurizio Avogadro]
* debian/rules: removed code to append extra lines to modprobe.d file, since
they are statically appended in debian/sl-modem-daemon.modutils.
* The init script can now modprobe even if the slamr module has been
  blacklisted.
* Modified 11_logfile.diff: Fixed the log path as the slmodemd daemon runs
as unprivileged user and didn't have write permissions on /var/log.
* Added class_device.diff patch: since 2.6.25 class_device_add() and
class_device_destroy() has been renamed, modified st7554.c accordingly.
* Removed obsolete /etc/modutils file.
* Small enhancements to the modprobe.d file:
+ verify device permissions on module install

[Bug 111292] Re: Midi should always work!

2008-11-17 Thread Emmet Hikory
I'm marking this bug Fix Released. Whlie MIDI doesn't always work, the
remaining issues aren't ones that can be solved at a broad level. Sound
card configuration needs detailed bugs about specific cards that don't
work. Applications that don't work as installed with MIDI need specific
bugs about how they do not work. gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad contains a
MIDI plugin, so if users install this package, client MIDI works in
nearly any circumstance.

[Bug 298535] Re: Please sync javassist 1:3.8.1-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Sync request ACK'd. builds/installs cleanly in jaunty. Debian solution
is different, but not less good, and keeping the diff just means extra
work.

2008-11-30 Thread Emmet Hikory
This would have been better as a merge, or ignored. Not all Ubuntu
changes were accepted into Debian, and some changes introduced in Debian
are counter to the wishes of upstream. (Yes, there's a reason this
wasn't updated for several releases). I'll fix it later (but now have
to pull a new upstream snapshot, as the Debian "snapshot" contains VCS
messiness).

[Bug 353080] Re: Netbeans IDE 6.5 don't autocomplete import statement

2009-06-05 Thread Emmet Hikory
The candidate fix is available in the jaunty-proposed repository now.
While you may not want to install *all* applications from the proposed
repository, you may find the documentation at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed to test the proposed
update to netbeans, and confirm that is fixes the bug for you. Once
enough of us have tested it, and nobody has found significant problems
after a certain number of days, it will be promoted to jaunty-updates
for distribution to everyone.

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-12 Thread Emmet Hikory
The trick with just removing media without warning the system is the
data write cache, such that users randomly pulling a USB drive without
unmounting may well have not fully flushed all the writes (the "Not safe
to remove" bit). Perhaps rather than having an explicit unmount/eject
feature, the UI should inform the user during the times that it is
unsafe to remove the device, and allow/encourage unsupervised removal at
all other times. An example of such mitigation would be ltspfs
(although that also involves network mounting), although this doesn't
currently have any means of notifying the user during the short periods
it is unsafe to remove the device and carries some performance
penalties.

The next trick is determining when to present the user with a means to
start navigating to known paths, which might involve the creation of an
access icon on hardware detection, left present until hardware detection
of removal. This works less well for optical drives without hardware
sense, and doesn't work at all for network resources, but should cover
other cases (USB, firewire, MMC, etc.). If access is unavailable to a
resource when the user attempts to use it, the user could be presented
with some dialog that could help resolve it (Please insert the disc
"foo" (OK retries, Cancel stops the access attempt)) or (Please check
your network connect tio resource "bar" (same options)).

At that point, it perhaps becomes interesting to have a means to remove
access icons for mitigated access, which should be amenable to
discoverable text (e.g. "Remove me"). This could apply to network
connection or unsensed optical media links where the user no longer has
a need for immediate access (although there may be leftover links in
Places to allow easy restoration of removed access icons). It could
also apply to sensed USB/MMC/etc. devices where the user *intentionally*
doesn't want to see it. New access icons would be created on new plug
events (although there would need to be some UI to detect the contents
of unsensed optical drives: perhaps just a generic link in Places).

Note that the effects of raw device access (my previous use cases A, B)
may confuse a system with that degree of automation support: *lots* of
testing is encouraged. More complex credential caching would be
required to cover encrypted devices (previous use case C), and the user
would need some UI to clear the credential cache (maybe useful anyway,
for other classes of cached credentials). I'm not sure these problems
are any easier than those raised in the "mount/unmount" model for the
same use cases, but I am sure that there exist lots of other possible
models for users to interact with removable/transient/remote media
beyond simply copying what is seen elsewhere in the name of
discoverability.

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-12 Thread Emmet Hikory
@Scott Not every optical drive has an eject button: some are under
software control (but may have some little pinhole into which one may
insert a paperclip: I don't think this sends a software-detectable
event). Also, my use case (A): rewriting rewritable media may require
the ability to unmount, but not eject optical media.

@dael Thanks for the extra use case for unmount-without-eject (multiple
partitions). The current UI to remount unmounted partitions is a little
odd in nautilus (visit "Computer", activate parition icon, wait), so I'd
argue there's no need to add a special "mount" feature (it's either
already there, or we confuse the current distinction that "Places" or
"Computer" may contain unmounted volumes, while the Desktop typically
contains only mounted volumes). That said, making this more
discoverable may be interesting.

2009-06-15 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Pleaes downgrfade gnome-termina from a dependency to a recommendation.
There are a couple other libgnome terminals available, and those users
who are particular about terminals tend to be very much so, to the point

[Bug 387305] [NEW] Terminator should take an argument to specify structure on startup

2009-06-15 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Terminator should provide some command-line options to specify a startup
layout for the given instantiation. An example of such usage would be
to have some preferred default configuration launch at session startup,

[Bug 381095] [NEW] update-notifier can miscount updates when present in both -updates and -security

2009-05-27 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

update-notifier can present confusing information to the user in the
motd after miscounting the packages available for update in the case
where a package may be updated from both the -updates and the -security
repositories. An example fragment of motd output might be:

1 package can be updated.
2 updates are security updates.

In this case, the affected package has the following apt-cache policy:

ntpdate:
  Installed: 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7ubuntu5.1
  Version table:
 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7ubuntu5.1 0

500 http://ports.ubuntu.com jaunty-security/main Packages
 *** 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7ubuntu5 0
500 http://ports.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

[Bug 156226] Re: Screen is not locked when laptop lid is closed

2009-05-27 Thread Emmet Hikory
It appears to me that the upstream behaviour is to have /apps/gnome-
power-manager/lock/blank_screen true in gconf, but that our package sets
this to false in debian/gconf-defaults. I strongly suspect this was
because this was perceived as a duplicate key to one in gnome-
screensaver, and only affects those who activate DPMS without either a
timeout or suspending (essentially limited to lid-close).

[Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 -> 1.6) and saves just vanish

2009-05-04 Thread Emmet Hikory
Providing notification of this external to NEWS.Debian would mean adding
it to the Release Notes. Typically, the Release Notes for each flavour
of Ubuntu is restricted to packages shipped by default in that flavour.
As wesnoth is not included by default in any flavour, this package is
typically not considered for release notes. Significant changes for
most packages are also reported in NEWS.Debian: if you are performing a
distribution upgrade, and need to ensure data compatibility with new
upstream versions of software, you may do best to inspect at least the
NEWS.Debian changes for those packages of particular concern, if not the
full changelog.

Of course, if you want to write a data file conversion tool, I'm
sure that would be appreciated upstream. In the presence of such a
tool, it becomes feasible to attempt to migrate user data.

[Bug 196069] Re: Please review package naming and source hints

2009-04-19 Thread Emmet Hikory
As you might have seen had you tried to replicate the listed issues, the
third is resolved, and the first two remain. These can be trivially
investigated with `apt-cache show linux`, `apt-cache show linux-
generic`, and `apt-get --simulate source linux`. I still suspect there
are other things that would benefit from review, but the two described
are clearly directly confusing to users.

[Bug 196069] Re: Please review package naming and source hints

2009-04-19 Thread Emmet Hikory
On reading what I've written, I apologize for being snippy. I do
understand that this is a difficult issue, in large part because of the
requirement to support upgrades from one release to another.

Addressing the first described issue requires some useful
differentiation between "linux" and "linux-generic", which wouldn't make
sense as they depend on precisely the same set of packages. Dropping
either would probably break upgrades for some people. That said, it's
still hard for a user to determine which is the correct package to
install from a package manager.

Addressing the second described issue is made more difficult because of
the nature of naming for source and binary packages. Because of the
existence of the binary "linux" meta-package, sensibly stored in linux-
meta, the package management software grabs the associated source for
the selected binary package.

Both could be addressed by dropping the "linux" binary meta-package from
the linux-meta source, although this would cause upgrade issues for
users with "linux" installed, and not "linux-generic". It may be
possible to work around this with a quirk in update-manager, although it
is probably only safe to do so by introducing such a change early in the
release cycle to ensure adequate testing.

[Bug 288327] Re: Xorg restarts during shutdown

2009-04-21 Thread Emmet Hikory
This is a side-effect of how Ubuntu-mid handles X, and how casper
handles a reboot event, with a prompt to remove the boot media (which is
then obscured by the restarting X from the upstart job). One way to
address this would be to have casper detect ubuntu-mid, and not prompt
for removal on shutdown. Another would be for ubiquity to specifically
stop the upstart session job when preparing to reboot. A third would be
to replace this means of starting X with something else.

[Bug 334711] [NEW] Ubuntu MID misses several X input drivers

2009-02-25 Thread Emmet Hikory
Public bug reported:

The explicit inclusion of xserver-xorg-input-evtouch made to address bug
#318349 short-circuits the xserver-xorg-input-all | xserver-xorg-input-4
dependency of xserver-xorg, itself a dependency of xorg, included in
both metapackages. As a result, the metapackages only include xserver-
xorg-input-evtouch and xserver-xorg-input-evdev, breaking support for
synaptics, as well as other drivers included in xserver-xorg-input-all.

The ubuntu-netbook-remix seeds appear to have an explicit recommendation
on xserver-xorg-input-all, perhaps to work around this. Either a
similar workaround should be added for ubuntu-mid, or xserver-xorg-
input-evtouch should be added as a dependency of xserver-xorg-input-all
and removed from the seeds (and xserver-xorg-input-all removed also from
ubuntu-netbook-remix).

[Bug 334990] Re: Ubiquity's icon missing on lpia MID image and hangs X11 when run from the command line

2009-02-27 Thread Emmet Hikory
ubiquity isn't supposed to appear in either the home menu or the all
applications menu in the MID image. It is present in "Preferences".
While X appeared to crash, this was actually hildon-desktop closing, and
X restarting (see bug #335478). Crashes from running applications from
the command line is a known issue, although it's not yet known if it is
an issue with gnome-terminal or with hildon-desktop (or some combination
thereof).

[Bug 365053] Re: On armel (Babbage platform), kernel image upgrading breaks if Ubiquity is instructed not to install a bootloader

2009-04-23 Thread Emmet Hikory
There are two aspects to this bug: firstly, that flash-kernel really
shouldn't fail in the absence of a configuration. The second is that
update-initramfs should be checking the appropriate hook from kernel-
img.conf. The hook to call flash-kernel will only be present if either
manually added, or added by flash-kernel-installer (in the case where
the user chose to install the bootloader).
