[Bug 252330] Re: [needs-packaging] linuxsampler
The licensing of linuxsampler remains the same as that described in bug #84451. The problem is not that it is non-free (as there is a wide variety of non-free software in multiverse), but that the license is considered to be self-contradictory. It both claims to be GPL (and is largely based on GPL code) which includes the provision that one may run the program, while also restricting use for commercial purposes. As such, it becomes undistributable. If linuxsampler were to change to a different license upstream that restricted use for non-commercial purposes, it would certainly be eligible for inclusion in multiverse. Alternately, if it were to change to be GPL, it would be eligible for inclusion in universe. Just for clarification, as of this writing, the distributed linuxsampler is under GPL 2.0 + "commercial exception". The commercial exception reads "LinuxSampler is licensed under the GNU GPL with the exception that USAGE of the source code, libraries and applications FOR COMMERCIAL HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE PRODUCTS IS NOT ALLOWED without prior written permission by the LinuxSampler authors.". The relevant section of the GPL (2.0) is section 6, which includes in part "You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein. You are not responsible for enforcing compliance by third parties to this License.". This is generally interpreted as not permitting the imposition of additional restrictions such as the commercial exception. ** Changed in: linuxsampler (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => linuxsampler Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- [needs-packaging] linuxsampler https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252330 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 252330] Re: [needs-packaging] linuxsampler
The licensing issues are well known upstream, and have been discussed multiple times on the mailing lists (I'd point you at the archives, but sourceforge doesn't maintain stable URLs for mailing list messages: search the archives for 2005 (and early 2006)). At one point it was thought that the restriction was added to CVS after the 0.3.3 release, although it was later discovered it had been there all along (according to the current FAQ on the linuxsampler homepage). Some participants in past threads have noted that such a license makes it not meet the standards of either the Open Source Iniitiative or the Free Software Foundation. Although the source code is available, it may not be entirely correct to call it either "open source" or "free software", depending on your interpretation. One interpretation of the license restrictions allows upstream to distribute linuxsampler (although no other party). Using this interpretation, upstream has begun to provide binary packages for a variety of distributions. It may be possible to ask that they include Ubuntu in their list of supported installation targets (currently that includes Debian, Gentoo, SuSE, WIndows, and Mac). -- [needs-packaging] linuxsampler https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252330 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 296516] [NEW] bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bzr-builddeb When using bzr merge-upstream to pull a new revision, debian/changelog should automatically be updated with the recommended version number and "New Upstream snapshot" when pulling from trunk, or "New Upstream version" when pulling from an appropriate tag. In the simple case where there are no conflicts, this allows the user to simply use debcommit to push the updated state of the package to the bzr repository for the package. In the more complex case, the user may need to adjust a couple things before being able to use debcommit, but can use dch normally to further update the changelog in preparation for debcommit. For extra portability between distributions and compatibility with standard practice when using VCS management of packaging, the special target "UNRELEASED" should be used in the changelog when it is updated (e.g. dch -v 1.2.3+bzr7477-1 -D UNRELEASED "New upstream snapshot"). ** Affects: bzr-builddeb (Ubuntu) Importance: Wishlist Status: New ** Changed in: bzr-builddeb (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist -- bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296516 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296516] Re: bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly
Lookiing at the patch, I don't see it changing the target to "UNRELEASED". As many developers rely on this to indicate whether a given version has been uploaded, it is probably worth adjusting this as well. Other than that, this looks exactly like what I wanted. Now, to address the reason it might not do this: I'm guessing that the result would probably be unsuitable for uploading to Ubuntu or a PPA directly (as it seems to encourage a revision of -1). By using UNRELEASED, the tool encourages the developer to double-check the version and target before uploading, which protects against this to some degree. -- bzr merge-upstream should adjust debian/changelog directly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296516 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The candidate fix is available in the jaunty-proposed repository now. [Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable
The trick with just removing media without warning the system is the data write cache, such that users randomly pulling a USB drive without unmounting may well have not fully flushed all the writes (the "Not safe to remove" bit). Perhaps rather than having an explicit unmount/eject feature, the UI should inform the user during the times that it is unsafe to remove the device, and allow/encourage unsupervised removal at all other times. An example of such mitigation would be ltspfs (although that also involves network mounting), although this doesn't currently have any means of notifying the user during the short periods it is unsafe to remove the device and carries some performance penalties. The next trick is determining when to present the user with a means to start navigating to known paths, which might involve the creation of an access icon on hardware detection, left present until hardware detection of removal. This works less well for optical drives without hardware sense, and doesn't work at all for network resources, but should cover other cases (USB, firewire, MMC, etc.). If access is unavailable to a resource when the user attempts to use it, the user could be presented with some dialog that could help resolve it (Please insert the disc "foo" (OK retries, Cancel stops the access attempt)) or (Please check your network connect tio resource "bar" (same options)). At that point, it perhaps becomes interesting to have a means to remove access icons for mitigated access, which should be amenable to discoverable text (e.g. "Remove me"). This could apply to network connection or unsensed optical media links where the user no longer has a need for immediate access (although there may be leftover links in Places to allow easy restoration of removed access icons). It could also apply to sensed USB/MMC/etc. devices where the user *intentionally* doesn't want to see it. New access icons would be created on new plug events (although there would need to be some UI to detect the contents of unsensed optical drives: perhaps just a generic link in Places). Note that the effects of raw device access (my previous use cases A, B) may confuse a system with that degree of automation support: *lots* of testing is encouraged. More complex credential caching would be required to cover encrypted devices (previous use case C), and the user would need some UI to clear the credential cache (maybe useful anyway, for other classes of cached credentials). I'm not sure these problems are any easier than those raised in the "mount/unmount" model for the same use cases, but I am sure that there exist lots of other possible models for users to interact with removable/transient/remote media beyond simply copying what is seen elsewhere in the name of discoverability. -- "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable
@Scott Not every optical drive has an eject button: some are under software control (but may have some little pinhole into which one may insert a paperclip: I don't think this sends a software-detectable event). Also, my use case (A): rewriting rewritable media may require the ability to unmount, but not eject optical media. @dael Thanks for the extra use case for unmount-without-eject (multiple partitions). The current UI to remount unmounted partitions is a little odd in nautilus (visit "Computer", activate parition icon, wait), so I'd argue there's no need to add a special "mount" feature (it's either already there, or we confuse the current distinction that "Places" or "Computer" may contain unmounted volumes, while the Desktop typically contains only mounted volumes). That said, making this more discoverable may be interesting. -- "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/28835 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Providing notification of this external to NEWS.Debian would mean adding it to the Release Notes. Typically, the Release Notes for each flavour of Ubuntu is restricted to packages shipped by default in that flavour. As wesnoth is not included by default in any flavour, this package is typically not considered for release notes. Significant changes for most packages are also reported in NEWS.Debian: if you are performing a distribution upgrade, and need to ensure data compatibility with new upstream versions of software, you may do best to inspect at least the NEWS.Debian changes for those packages of particular concern, if not the full changelog. Of course, if you want to write a data file conversion tool, I'm sure that would be appreciated upstream. [Bug 196069] Re: Please review package naming and source hints
On reading what I've written, I apologize for being snippy. I do understand that this is a difficult issue, in large part because of the requirement to support upgrades from one release to another. Addressing the first described issue requires some useful differentiation between "linux" and "linux-generic", which wouldn't make sense as they depend on precisely the same set of packages. Dropping either would probably break upgrades for some people. That said, it's still hard for a user to determine which is the correct package to install from a package manager. Addressing the second described issue is made more difficult because of the nature of naming for source and binary packages. Because of the existence of the binary "linux" meta-package, sensibly stored in linux- meta, the package management software grabs the associated source for the selected binary package. Both could be addressed by dropping the "linux" binary meta-package from the linux-meta source, although this would cause upgrade issues for users with "linux" installed, and not "linux-generic". It may be possible to work around this with a quirk in update-manager, although it is probably only safe to do so by introducing such a change early in the release cycle to ensure adequate testing. -- Please review package naming and source hints https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/196069 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
