[Bug 303576] [NEW] KDM is killing my keyboard (and others)

2008-11-29 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Well what started as a problem with the keyboard and not being able
to start compiz as different bugs ended up being related (apparently) to
kdm.

When I get to kdm, all things are OK. I can write "@" (altgr + q) and
can move the cursor with the keys. Also, on the VTs, everything is OK.

When I log into kde by kdm (kubuntu intrepid on a Presario V3317la with
the Nvidia driver) the arrows don't work at all and altgr behaves like
. Also, Compiz doesn't get to start... and that's because I
didn't get DirectRendering activated (according to glxinfo). Also I
always get a message about an application crashing detected by kde4d.
All things apparently unrelated.

Now the thing that is bothering me the most is the keyboard, so I
started testing. I shutdown kdm and started kde by hand:

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
X &
DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 startkde

When i did this, I got to KDE as usual, but:
1 The keyboard is working perfectly
2 I got no error about any application crashing on the startup
3 Got DirectRendering working and could start compiz by hand: compiz --replace

Any idea of how I can solve it?

Thanks!

[Bug 371214] Re: mouse keyboard do not work at Jaunty log in screen

2009-05-17 Thread Edmundo
** Description changed:

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit version). I'm running it on a
  Dell 1310 Vostro laptop.

For the first couple dozen boot ups all was fine. Now, periodically, my
keyboard and mousepad freeze at the log-in screen (from a fresh boot).
I'm not using an external keyboard or mouse. Even when I manually power
down and then reboot, they stay frozen. My only work around is to reboot
and select recovery mode in Grub then choose the continue normal boot
process. This leads to a log in screen with normal keyboard and mouse
  function.
+
+ It is possible to use the keyboard and mouse if the power cord is connected
to the laptop.
+ They continue working once the laptop has booted with the power cord
connected and it is unplugged.

[Bug 271362] [NEW] Intrepid: Akregator: Can't see the news' "description"

were inside the selected source/directory and in the lower pane I could
see the overview of the selected news from the upper pane. That was

[Bug 276880] Re: When Akregator tray icon is clicked when Akregator is open, it does not minimize

2009-01-09 Thread Edmundo
Seems like you have said it all, except for this:
If the application is minimized, a click on the tray icon DOES restore it.. and
then (inmediately) minimizes it again. As least I do see a flash on my desktop
that I'd associate with an application being restored/minimized in a fast
succession.

[Bug 342817] [NEW] Jaunty: Can't get to a desktop

2009-03-14 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Hi!

Since about 2 days ago I can't get to see a desktop when I start kde.

As a test, I just mved out of my home the .kde and ,kde4 directories
from my home and tried to start kde again. Same thing.

It all looks like it's going to start normally. I get the splash screen,
I get to hear the welcome sound, I even get to see some notifications at
the top of the screen (one of them says that some application crashed...
perhaps that's the problem), but the desktop at the end it's empty.
I can't get to kill it with alt+e or alt-ctrl-backspace. I have to get
to the VTs (alt-ctrl-Fx does work... at least) and restart kdm to kill
my session. Also, I can use the alt-F2 combination. That's how I started
ksnapshot to get the picture I'm sending along with this bug.

Here's the list of processes running on the computer right now.

Re: [Bug 343690] Re: Jaunty: Doesn't work at all in my box

2009-03-16 Thread Edmundo
I just updated my box. Removed the xorg.conf and rebooted.

I got to kdm, I was able to see kdm's background, I was able to move
the mouse around... however, there was nothing else displayed from kdm
(just the background), I couldn't use the keyboard (not even the caps
lock led turned on / off), I couldn't get to the VTs. So I used the
alt-SysRq keys (I didnt test pressing the power button, though
sorry) to restart. So... right now I'm using the same xorg.conf that
xorg created for me with Xorg -config with the driver saying "vesa"
instead.

There goes the log

[Bug 343694] [NEW] Jaunty: Xorg fails when the session finishes

2009-03-16 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When my xfce4 session finishes, instead of getting back to kdm (I use
kubuntu but my kde is broken right now, so I'm using xfce in the
meantime), I'm welcomed by the VTs

I checked xorg's logs and it's because there's a crash.

By the way, I'm using vesa cause I'm having problems with intel's driver (in
case you are interested as well)

[Bug 343690] [NEW] Jaunty: Doesn't work at all in my box

2009-03-16 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Since I moved to jaunty from intrepid (dist-upgrade) about 2 weeks ago I
haven't been able to use the intel driver on my box. It simply doesn't
work. sat down yesterday and collected xorg logs for you to see.

At first (say... two weeks ago) I got a kdm screen (use kubuntu) that
looked almost normal... but there were some artifacts showing up when I
moved my my mouse around and I couldn't type a thing.
alt+ctrl+backspace didn't work. I couldn't get to the VTs... and I
couldn't alt-ctrl-del either. The only way out was to press the power
button opf my box and wait for it to reboot (at least that did work).

Yesterday when I was doing the text, when I ran "X" from the terminal, I
got a black screen and never got to the "net" (you know... (X
background). Key's didn't work and not even pressing the power
button worked. I had to use the alt-SysRq keys to reset it.

I made bz2 files.

dpkg.bz2 is less than 6 MBs but apt.bz2 is like 21 MBs. And from
the last post I think they are not necessary anymore, right?

So let's suppose it's a repo synchronization issue why does
apt explode anyway? Shouldn't apt handle the problem (once detected)
gracefully?

[Bug 343690] Re: [Jaunty] 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller fails to load X

2009-03-18 Thread Edmundo
I just tested the driver that was downloaded on the update (like 15
minutes ago).

When kdm starts, I get to see its background, but no other thing shows
up. I get to move the mouse around. Can't get to the VTs. Caps lock
doesn't switch (at least, there's no led blinking). The power button was
able to shut down the box, only that there was no change in the kdm
background till a little before booting (a lot of color noise showed
up). Then the box shut down gracefully.

Re: [Bug 343690] Re: [Jaunty] 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller fails to load X

2009-03-19 Thread Edmundo
Well that's a bit of adding insult to injury. I "know" how to
start my box without X without having to disable kdm. Also I said
before that I was running X without xorg.conf, with an xorg.conf
created by Xorg --config, with the old xorg.conf (from intrepid)
modified to use vesa and the opne I'm running now (the "created by
xorg" xorg.conf modified to use vesa).

Well... let me just try to run startx to see how it's gonna be (but I
bet it won't work). Give me some minutes. Do I get a backtrace through
ssh for you?

Re: [Bug 343690] Re: [Jaunty] 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller fails to load X

2009-03-19 Thread Edmundo
Really? Well by looking at the backtrace X is getting stuck in a
kernel call. So perhaps the problem is in that direction. Let me try
the "intrepid kernel" approach to see how it goes.

Re: [Bug 343690] Re: [Jaunty] 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller fails to load X

2009-03-19 Thread Edmundo
Right on! It _does_ work with intrepid's kernel.

Now X is running with no xorg.conf and it's _nice_. I had to change
menu.lst so that it uses the "saved" kernel as the default... but I
can live with that.

So how can we help to get this problem fixed in jaunty?

[Bug 293595] Re: package libswt3.2-gtk-gcj failed to install/upgrade: Inconsistency detected by ld.so: ../sysdeps/i386/dl-machine.h: 550: elf_machine_rel_relative: Assertion `((reloc->r_info) & 0xff)

2009-03-01 Thread Edmundo
I was having that same problem showing up when compiling (well.. just
configuring, as a matter of fact) bash from upstream sources (kubuntu
intrepid patched).

Then I was told on the bash IRC channel to try something simpler: make a
hello word program. I got exactly the same mistake when I tried to
compile it.

I was then told to run:
apt-get install --reinstall build-essential binutils libc6-dev

Then I was able to configure bash successfully.

[Bug 355258] [NEW] [i865] Jaunty: DRI disabled with i865

2009-04-04 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

I have video on my jaunty box, but I have no hardware acceleration. It's
being disabled by intel's driver.

>From Xorg.0.log:
(**) intel(0): DRI is disabled because it fails to run on 845G and 865G chips.
(See LP 304871)

I'll send my xorg.conf (hacked) and the accompanying log in a follow up,
then I'll send stock xorg.conf (created by Xorg -configure and its
log... neither provides hardware acceleration, anyway).

Well, I tested on jaunty with the repository named by Brice before,
and it didn't work.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

I get to the background of KDM, but no login page shows up. I could
restart by using the alt-sysrq keys. I didn't test starting "startx"
from the command line, though.

So perhaps I'll just have to wait for kinky kangaroo to show up.

[Bug 407587] Re: karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-08-05 Thread Edmundo
As a workaround, you can get a working environment with vesa.

First, blacklist i915. That's done adding a line saying:
blacklist i915 to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

By the way, that blacklist worked with the 2.6.31-5 kernel. With
2.6.31-4 it didn't.

Then configure xorg (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) to use the vesa driver (if you
don't have a /etc/X11/corg.conf file it will require that you create one
by running sudo X --configure with the gdm/kdm/xdm/whateverdm service
down and copy it there for xorg to use it). That will be enough to get a
working environment instead of a screen with a heavy case of parkinson's
desease no acceleration though but at least you will be able to
work.

[Bug 407587] [NEW] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-07-31 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

I think I have finally recovered acceleration on 865G after losing it on
jaunty... however there's a heavy flicker affecting the screen. It's
like if the screen is scrolled to the right of the screen and moved back
to its normal position over and over in a very short amount of time. I
think it's somehow tied to video refreshes (when something changes on
the screen) and the CPU usage.

Another problem is that after a while of these heavy flickering there's
a condition (go figure what it is) that will make video pseudo-freeze. I
get to move the mouse, the screen is positioned normally but there's no
more change in the screen. Keyboard gets unresponsive too. I get to
reboot with alt-sysrq-x, though.

The box is close to unusable right now. I tried to report this bug on
GNU/Linux like 4 times and every time it pseudo-freezed (as I said). I'm
reporting it on güindous (and it makes me so happy, you know).

Hope I can help somehow to solve this 865g problems once and for all.

Re: [Bug 355258] Re: [i865] Jaunty: DRI disabled with i865

2009-06-09 Thread Edmundo
Well... I enabled this repo:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main

I tried running X without an xorg.conf.

It started with exa, so no acceleration. The same old message about
the LP to look at.

So I generated a xorg.conf with Xorg -configure

Edited it and set AccelMethod to uxa, set DRI to true. I still have no
acceleration (though it didn't hung up) and the CPU consumption by the
Xorg process is excessively high (though it goes down, the latency of
the system is rather high as I'm writing this mail). Anyways, taken
from the log:
(**) intel(0): Using UXA for acceleration
(**) intel(0): DRI is disabled because it fails to run without
freezing on i810 and i865G chips. (See LP 304871)

I'm sending the full log plus the hacked xorg.conf.

Anything else I should try? I'm going back to exa (or vesa) to see if
the system is more responsive.

Re: [Bug 125275] Re: Gutsy: No sound

Yes, I didn't restart the whole box, just closed my kde session and
restarted it.

It could be a lock, but that was the first time I started a session in
the box this morning, and (if I'm not wrong) I couldn't hear the "KDE
up & running" sound, so the problem was already there before I even
fired up amarok or another application.

If I notice other things, I'll let you know.

I think it's relevant to know that I'm using kubuntu, because I think
instead of using the gkt library KDE is forcing a wrapper, right?

I tried with "Use my KDE style in GTK applications" and also "raleigh"
settings, yet both crashed (though raleigh might have taken a little
longer to crash).

[Bug 126760] KDE: Transparency problem when coming from an empty desktop

2007-07-18 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde

I enabled transparency for inactive windows.

If I switch from a desktop which has at least window running (even
minimized ones) to a desktop which has an active window, the "new"
window will be displayed without transparency... which is OK. However,
if I switch from an empty desktop to another desktop with running
windows, the _active_ application will be displayed active (following
the bar's color), but the transparency will be active (just like an
inactive window).

[Bug 131416] pppoe [gutsy]: pppd is dying when there's a phone call

2007-08-09 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ppp

I'm using a SpeedTouch device to get to the ethernet. The internet
connection is established through pppoe (I connect to the modem through
a ethernet link). The modem gets its "signal" by a phone line.

Since this norming, when there's a phone call coming into our house, ppp
dies. It's already happend 4 or 5 times today. It hadn't happend before.

Here's what I can get from syslog:

Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: No response to 3 echo-requests
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: Connect time 183.4 minutes.
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: Sent 3895600 bytes, received 75627365
bytes.
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: Connection terminated.
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppoe[12354]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Session 1236:
Input/output error
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppoe[12354]: Sent PADT
Aug 9 17:44:47 parrados pppd[12353]: Exit.

There was nothing else that I could find in other files relevant.

PS I just tried resetting the modem to see what would happen to the
connection. Till yesterday, if the connection went down (resetting, a
phone call), the ppp connection would go down and then after a while it
would come back online. Not today:

Aug 9 18:01:57 parrados pppd[15395]: No response to 3 echo-requests
Aug 9 18:01:57 parrados pppd[15395]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Aug 9 18:01:57 parrados pppd[15395]: Connect time 7.4 minutes.
Aug 9 18:01:57 parrados pppd[15395]: Sent 225653 bytes, received 334913 bytes.
Aug 9 18:02:00 parrados pppd[15395]: Connection terminated.
Aug 9 18:02:00 parrados pppoe[15396]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Session 5407:
Input/output error
Aug 9 18:02:00 parrados pppoe[15396]: Sent PADT
Aug 9 18:02:00 parrados pppd[15395]: Exit.

I'll restart it again... just in case you see something valuable:
$ sudo /etc/restartinternet.sh
[sudo] password for myuser:
pppoe-stop: The pppoe-connect script (PID 15378) appears to have died
Killing pppd (15395)
. Connected!
$

Hope that helps.

[Bug 124085] amarok is broken in gutsy

2007-07-04 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

it seems that amarok (or one of its dependencies) is missing one
dependency:

amarokapp: /usr/lib/libcurl-gnutls.so.4: version `CURL_GNUTLS_4' not
found (required by /usr/lib/libtunepimp.so.5)

And when I ask for the package libcurl4-gnutls:

$ LANG=en sudo apt-get install libcurl4-gnutls
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libcurl4-gnutls: Depends: libcurl3-gnutls (= 7.16.2-6ubuntu3) but
7.16.2-6ubuntu2 is to be installed

I didn't reply to launchpad because it didn't make sense to send this

How do I downgrade? Can I do it with apt-get or I'll have to do it by
hand (downloading the packages from somewhere and using dpkg to
install them?)

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 407587] Re: [i865] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-09-09 Thread Edmundo
Hi, guys!

I was testing the 2.6.31-10 kernel (just upgraded the box). The
'parkinson's desease' problem from boot up is gone. After I removed the
the i915 from the blacklist, I got a stable screen on boot up.

However, when I removed the xorg.conf (that I use to stick with vesa) I
think I got the hardware acceleration back _but_ the box pseudo-hangs
when kde is still starting my environment (past the splash screen, while
loading the applications). It happened twice after updating so I'm
sticking with vesa for now. I was able to reboot with alt-sysrq key
combinations (that's why I said it pseudo-crashes).

What can I do so that I gather some information for you regarding these
situation?

[Bug 427605] [NEW] karmic: can't build dahdi-source

2009-09-10 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

I want to dive into asterisk.. at least for experimenting a little but
with it.

After having some installation issues (the apt-get install process
breaking because there was no dahdi kernel module) I uninstalled
asterisk and installed dahdi-source so that I could build it before i
installed asterisk (shouldn't that be handled with a requirement to
asterisk?... anyway).

Re: [Bug 407587] Re: [i865] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-10-09 Thread Edmundo
Well, I just updated. Looks like I got a normal (accelerated
Yippie!) environment. I removed the xorg.conf file and i915 is not
blacklisted and it's working. I'll let you know later if it remains
like this without crashing.

[Bug 407587] Re: [i865] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-11-08 Thread Edmundo
Well, I think we are not through with the problems with 865. More often
than not when the box is booting, X won't start and I won't get access
to the VTs when that happens. I can shut it down gracefully by pressing
power button or by using alt-sysRq keys. From another box through SSH I
get to see this on dmesg:

[ 85.663792] [drm:i915_wait_request] *ERROR* something (likely vbetool)
disabled interrupts, re-enabling
[ 85.663820] render error detected, EIR: 0x0010
[ 85.663827] [drm:i915_handle_error] *ERROR* EIR stuck: 0x0010, masking
[ 85.663838] render error detected, EIR: 0x0010

Just in case, here's the backtrace of X:

Re: [Bug 407587] Re: [i865] karmic: 865g is pretty unstable

2009-10-13 Thread Edmundo
It doesn't happen all the time but it has already happened twice that
when the box is booting I get to a black screen with nothing at all on
it. No kdm, no mouse pointer, no keyboard input (not even the leds),
no nothing. I'm able to shutdown gracefully if I press the power
button or if I use the alt+sysrq keys.

I checked the old xorg log (broken start) with the new one (working) I
saw that the log got cut on the broken one here:
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_swap_control and GLX_MESA_swap_control
(II) AIGLX: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap backed by buffer objects
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0
(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 270 x 200

On the normal one, it says the same plus:
(II) config/hal: Adding input device AT Translated Set 2 keyboard
(II) LoadModule: "evdev"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//evdev_drv.so
(II) Module evdev: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.6.3, module version = 2.2.5
Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 4.0

Etc etc... is it something to place on this same bug or it should be
placed on a new bug?

[Bug 427605] Re: karmic: can't build dahdi-source

2009-09-17 Thread Edmundo
I just tried installing asterisk and it did install this time so I guess
it's done.

Thanks for solving this problem so fast!

[Bug 432854] [NEW] karmic: pretty basic configuration always tells user she's unauthorized

2009-09-18 Thread Edmundo
Public bug reported:

I'm using a very simple configuration of asterisk on jaunty
(with a live CD).

What I did was set up a couple of sip users by rewriting sip.conf from
scratch and define some extensions on extensions.conf (then again, from
scratch). It works pretty well on jaunty. Now, when I try to do the same
thing on karmic, the user always get's an Unauthorized message:

SipClient: Received: 20:24:12.831

Why is that?
