[Bug 376267] [NEW] Under View, Sort Images, manual order is grayed out

2009-05-13 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I have been unable to figure out how to be able to use the View, Sort
Images, Manual order option. It is grayed out nad I haven't been able to
figure out a way to use it. I make quite a few slide shows for
commercial use and generally sort though 3 times more pictures than I
use, and also put them in a particular order before renaming them. I hd
a windows program which did this nicely. If I had the manual sort, I'm
sure your program would do it also.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04, but it was the same with Ubuntu 8.10.
Version: 3:2.10.11-oubuntu1

Thank you.

[Bug 511019] [NEW] Neither Sun Java Plugin or Iced Tea Java plugin works - 3.5.8pre and 3.6pre

2010-01-21 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I've been running the Firefox and Thunderbird daily builds since
Thunderbird 3.0 came out on Ubuntu 9.10. I have Sun Java 6-15-1
installed. I had no problems until last night with Java not working in
Firefox 3.5 working. There was an Ubuntu security update installed
last night and also updates to Firefox. After the update I saw Java
wasn't working in Firefox 3.5.8pre. It was too late to play with it.
Today my work computer had security updates and also Firefox updates
which took Firefox to 3.6pre. I lost Java in Firefox in that machine
also. When a site requiring Java is loaded, Firefox says there are
missing plugins. Clicking on the notification suggests the Iced Tea or
the Sun Java plugins. If I click on the Sun plugin, it tells me it is
already installed. I've tried relaoding the page. Closing the browser
and reopening the page, completely uninstalling Java and reinstalling
it, with complete shutdowns in the process. And completely uninstalling
Firefox and Java, doing a complete shutdown, then reinstalling Firefox,
and then reinstalling the plugin through the Firefox missing plugin
links, but the plugin will still not work. If you try to install it
again after that, it still says it is installed.

Please let me know if I can provide any further information.

[Bug 511019] Re: Neither Sun Java Plugin or Iced Tea Java plugin works - 3.5.8pre and 3.6pre

2010-01-22 Thread Don Myers
Additional Information:

I found this in Ubuntuzilla today:

~
Java plugin not showing up (on Ubuntu Karmic)

If the Java plugin is not showing up, this is due to a bug in sun-java6-plugin
package on Ubuntu Karmic. To fix this, run the following command (copy and
paste the entire line into a terminal, and press enter):
sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so
mozilla-javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50

This will place the appropriate link to the java plugin into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.

Restart your browser to detect the plugin.
~

This does take care of the issue, but
While Java now works in Firefox 3.6.1pre and also the 3.6 from the Ubuntuzilla
repository, as soon as I scroll down on any of the pages in this site:
http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com
small to large white blocks appear. This never happened before my initial post
that Java wasn't working. It worked very well in all versions of 3.0 and 3.5.
No white blocks at all. I would assume it is a Firefox 3.6 issue. I am the
webmaster of this site, so I am very aware of how it looks and if something
changes in how it displays.

Thank you for your consideration of this issue.

Don

[Bug 511019] Re: Neither Sun Java Plugin or Iced Tea Java plugin works - 3.5.8pre and 3.6pre

2010-01-22 Thread Don Myers
Hi John,

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my 4 computers, on a co-workers
computer, my wife's computer, as well as 8 others of folks who were
willing to give Ubuntu a try. On my main desktops(2) and on my backup
desktop, with either the daily build repositories builds 3.6pre or
3.6.1pre, or the present 3.6 from Ubuntuzilla through the Ubuntu
Software Center (Ubuntuzilla), I needed to do "sudo update-alternatives
--install /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so mozilla-
javaplugin.so /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so 50" to
make the java plugin work. Once it works, as soon as I scroll down the
page, I have the white blank spaces show up on the page as shown in the
attachment below. I will attach two more in posts to show what happens
as you scroll further down, or back up. I updated my co-workers
computer today to the daily build of 3.6.1pre and had to install the
link to make the plug in work, and his had the same white blanks showing
up. This never occurred in the daily builds prior to the very last daily
updates to 3.5.8pre, or to the the regular 3.5. My wife has the latest
from the regular Ubuntu updates, which 3.5.4, and it works just fine. My
laptop has an early 3.5.8pre before the last daily updates to it, and it
works fine. On the pages in http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com, I have
java menus on all the pages, and Java marquees on a few pages. The
computyers have an assortment of video drivers, mostly nVidia and ATI

Exactly which page in the java site would you like me to check out my
java?

2010-01-23 Thread Don Myers
I installed Firefox 3.6 on Windows Vista today on the same machine which
I used to capture the above images on. I have a dual boot set up with
Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista. The http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com site worked
perfectly under Vista/Firefox 3.6 without any white blocks showing up or
other java problems. This is not a machine specific issue since the 4
different computers with Ubuntu 9.10 that I've tried with Firefox 3.6
from Ubuntuzilla or the daily builds all have the same issue.

The same thing happens with the white blocks showing up in this site:
http://www.tripennucc.com/index.html

This marquee is from a completely different company than the ones on www
.cbur-ruralproperty.com are from.

The white blocks will occur using either the middle wheel on the mouse
to scroll, or dragging the right hand arrow down to scroll, but it seems
a little more pronounced when using the scroll wheel.

Re: [Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white

2010-05-17 Thread Don Myers
Hi,

Thank you very, very much! The reason this is a big problem for me is
that I sell real estate, and all of the brochures I print out are
printed from our website. And thank you for confirming the bug! I'm sure
you are right about this being the same as the debian bug. I don't know
if this affects other printers besides HP or not.

This issue never showed up until Ubuntu 10.04. I've been using Ubuntu
for about 14 months now, and am 95% away from Windows. I've installed it
on about 20 computers for various people. I started with 8.10 about a
month before 9.04. Then I upgraded to 9.04, 9.10, and now 10.04. I've
learned a lot, but still I have much, much more to learn. Almost all of
these systems are running HP printers.

May I ask a question?
First, to delete the

-dUseCIEColor flag,

> PS2PDF_OPTIONS="$PS2PS_OPTIONS -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode \
> -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dUseCIEColor"
do I delete the entire paste above, or just put a # sign in front of
that. Or do I just delete a portion of the above? Also, should I be
posting this to the bug report to help others?

Thank you.

Hi,

It works perfectly now!!! Thank you so much. My old laser printer
still works fine also. I would assume that once the real fix is out, my
Ubuntu updates would update things. Is this a correct assumption?

I hope you have or had a great day also!

Re: [Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white

2010-05-18 Thread Don Myers
Hi David,

Thank you again so much for everything. I've made the change on 6 of the
11 machines I've upgraded. They are all working fine.

Maybe this will help with the issue. I use cups-pdf a lot. If you
selected cup-pdf and printed a document before making the change (like
last week), it also had the cream color background. I printed one off
this morning that I created last Friday. It printed with the cream color
which means the cream color was also created in cups-pdf. I created a
new pdf this morning of the same document with cups-pdf, and then
printed the document on the K5400, and it is fine. Nice, white,
background!!!

If I can do any testing or be of additional assistance, please let me
know.

Thank you again so very, very, very much for all of your help!!

[Bug 554172] Re: cups not starting at boot

2010-06-10 Thread Don Myers
I have installed or upgraded 15 systems since 10.04 was released. All 32
bit versions. Most were upgrades from 9.10. In almost all instances when
an upgrade was done, after the installation was finished and the machine
rebooted, cups was not running. Some of these machines have not been a
problem after that. Several continue to be a major issue. One of those
is a co-worker's computer. Several times has said to me about wiping of
his Ubuntu and his just going back to Windows. I'm dragging my feet as
much as possible in the hope that this gets fixed.

[Bug 578920] Re: Cream Background Color when it should be white

2010-05-13 Thread Don Myers
Additional printers affected: The HP Photosmart C309 in Ubuntu 10.04 is
doing the same thing. The HP 3845 also does it, but it is very faint as
compared to the K5400, 8000, 8500, and C309. It is about like the HP
2605 color laser jet where you have to look really hard to see it. I've
also attached a copy of the pdf file for the page I attached last night.
This pdf was created using cups-pdf in Ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 554172] Re: cups not starting at boot

2010-05-25 Thread Don Myers
I've been fighting the same issue. I've upgraded 11 machines from 9.10
to 10.04. They were all upgrades and not fresh installs. In most cases
after the upgrade, the printers did not show up. I would reinstall cups
and everything seemed fine. But what I'm finding is that randomly on at
least 3 machines one time when you boot, the printers will be there,
then the next time they are gone. My one machine at home has an AMD 4800
dual core processor and 4 gigs of ram. On Sunday they were gone again,
so I did a complete uninstall of cups in synaptic package manager, and
then a complete reinstall of cups assuming this would take care of the
problem. The computer was fine yesterday, but tonight my printers were
gone again. Two of the problem computers are on machines with almost new
Linux users, and they are not very impressed. I hope you get a
workaround real fast!!!

[Bug 477843] Re: USB transfer is very slow on Ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-13 Thread Don Myers
I'm having the same problem. I had 9.04 installed. Everything worked
fine. I wiped out 9.04 to have a clean install of 9.10 and when copying
data back from the usb portable hard drive files will start at a good
speed, and then when they are about 1/4 to 1/2 transferred, the transfer
almost stops dead. After a few minutes of it being dead though, once
tonight it did then pick back up to an acceptable speed. I've only seen
that happen 1 time. I'm running the 32 bit version on an AMD 4800 dual
core.

[Bug 1308758] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 install blocks Windows 8.1 from booting in dual boot

2014-04-25 Thread Don Myers
When the problem first developed, I sent the output to the boot-utility
folks also. It was a while before they got back to me, plus I didn't get
back to them immediately because I felt I would probably find something
in the Internet how to make it work. I didn't, so I followed up with
them. First they had me do the following:

hello Don,
Please:
1) run Boot-Repair --> "Advanced Options"--> untick "Backup and rename Windows
EFI files" --> tick "Restore EFI backups" --> Apply, and tell us the new URL
that will appear.
2) reboot the computer and tell us what you observe

Regards
The B-R team

This was my reply to them with the results after doing the above:

Hi,
Thank you so much for your help. We progressed, but aren't done yet. I have
windows booting now as it normally would. The grub options didn't show up at
all now. Here is the log:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/7318099

Thank you again so much.

Then they wrote back and had me do the following:
Hello Don,

Good job :)
Now please go into your BIOS (UEFI firmware ), and select "Ubuntu" as default
boot entry in the boot order menu.
If unsure, please send us pictures (taken with camera) of your BIOS menus.

Regards
The B-R team

Here was my response to trying that (I had pictures in the e-mail back to
them.):
Hi,

Thank you!

If I press F12, I have the option to select what I want to boot from. However,
all I can do with this menu is to select. Even though there are the up and down
arrows and it says to move selection, if you try to select any of them so you
could try to move them, they automatically execute. So I can't move Ubuntu to
#1. If I don't do anything when the computer is in the process of booting,
Windows boots. If I select windows from the BIOS menu, windows boots. If I
select Ubuntu, I get the Grub menu where I can select Ubuntu, Ubuntu advanced,
and Windows. It does not include the Windows restore link.
If I select Ubuntu in the Grub menu, Ubuntu boots. If I select Windows in the
Grub menu, Windows boots.
I went into the BIOS (Yes, I do know that isn't the proper terminology. I guess
I'm set in my ways.) I could not find anything directly in the BIOS which would
let me change the boot order.

In order to change the Boot Mode or Priority, I had to enable CSM. In Boot
Mode, I changed it to UEFI first from Auto. I also changed the Boot Priority to
UEFI first. I saved the settings and rebooted. The computer would not boot. I
went back and changed them to the original settings, and everything works as
described above.

It seems to me if we get the BIOS to recognize GRUB, then we should have
a working situation, but I'm the amateur and you folks are the
professionals.

Thanks again for all of your assistance.

Don

I've attached the complete e-mail with the pictures. On one hand, I
would really like to have this fixed. I do 95% of my work in Ubuntu, and
having to hit F12 all the time when I boot to be able to get into Ubuntu
isn't efficient use of my time. Plus, I might wear out the F12 key! But,
at least after a month, I can get into both systems. It seems like there
are lots of problems. It seems like Ubuntu is getting a lot of blame for
the issues, but it all goes back to Microsoft and their efforts to mess
up Linux. So far, they have succeeded.

I'm still waiting for a response from the boot-repair folks on what to
do next.

Don

[Bug 1308758] [NEW] Ubuntu 14.04 install blocks Windows 8.1 from booting in dual boot

2014-04-16 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

My computer is 5 months old. Was dual booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu
13.10. No issues. Did a clean install of 14.04 final beta to the
partition which had 13.10. Upon restart, I can only boot to Ubuntu. If I
try windows from grub menu, it reverts right back to Ubuntu. If I try
windows from a bios selection before loading grub, as soon as I select
windows, grub appears, and will only load Ubuntu. Ubuntu is installed in
efi mode. Ubuntu and windows both are in the efi partition. I ran the
boot-utility for saucy since I didn't find one for 14.10. It did not fix
the problem. As of now, I'm locked out of Windows 8.1. Another person
had the exactly the same thing happen both on the first install with
13.10 where Ubuntu would not boot, and now on the upgrade to 14.04 where
windows 8.1 will not boot. See

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-04-29 Thread Don Myers
I tried installing the 295.33 drivers twice. Everything seemed to go
fine, however, after both tries I could not get back to a graphical
interface. I reverted back to the open source Nouveau video driver until
this is fixed, which I hope is real soon. The open source driver is
working reasonably well and seems to give me some of the 3D features
like size adjustment of the launcher icons.

[Bug 1236120] Re: Cups-pdf Prints Blank Page

2013-10-19 Thread Don Myers
Yes, this workaround does work!! Thank you. I had read about a PPD
file for cups-pdf in the cups-pdf site, but didn't know where to find
it.

I think the issue is that the PPD file never gets installed as the
driver for cups-pdf when cups-pdf in installed, not that some upgrade
wipes it out.

[Bug 1233913] [NEW] Unable to find networked printers

2013-10-01 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

This is a new, clean isntall of Ubuntu 13.10 Beta 2. I have two networked
printers on my network:
Samsung ML-2955ND
Epson Work Force WP-4530

In Ubuntu 13.04, all my systems just found the ML-2955ND and it was
installed auntomatically through the print manager. Neither the Ubuntu
printer dialog box or cups localhost631 see this printer in 13.10.

I purchased the Epson WP-4530 this summer while running Ubuntu 13.04. To
install it in 13.04, I downloaded the Epson driver from Epson
epson-injet-printer-20113w_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb
would install the driver, and then cups would find the networked printer and
install it in 13.04. The printer worked great. I did the same with 13.10
install it, but it will not show up as a networked printer either in the Ubuntu
printer dialog box or in cups localhost631. Right now I can not print at all
from this computer as these are my only two printers for this network.

[Bug 1233913] Re: Unable to find networked printers

2013-10-02 Thread Don Myers
Till,

I followed the instructions as per the netwrok section of the above
page. Both printers pinged fine. On the nmap for each IP address, the
Samsung showed up, but it said the Epson might be blocking, and to use
nmap -Pn. Then it did show a printer there. I ran through everything
else (no printers showed up in cups), then closed the terminal, and
opened it again to run everything a second time and to save it to a text
file. This time cups found both printers when running the commands the
second time. I ran through the rest of the commands to the end. I then
check the text file I thought I was creating and it only had the last
command saved, so I didn't attach it. Since the output showed cups was
finding the printers now, I went to the Ubuntu printer dialog box,
clicked on add printer, both showed up, both were installed, and both
printed test pages. I then did a reboot, and both printers printed fine
after the reboot. I have no idea what made it start working to see the
printers, but all is fine now. I don't know if you remember me or not.
You've helped with other printer issues in the past. I have been greatly
appreciative of everything. Thank you so very much for all of your
assistance. If you want me to do any more testing on this to try to
figure out what was wrong, please let me know.

Re: [Bug 1236120] Re: Cups-pdf Prints Blank Page

2013-12-04 Thread Don Myers
Hi Javi,

I just set up Ubuntu 13.10 on a new system the end of last week. The
install, including cups-pdf, went fine, and cups-pdf worked as it should.

The password that is being asked for in localhost:631 is the same one
you use when you enter your password for updates.

[Bug 979431] [NEW] Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-04-11 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

When I click print the printer icon always shows up in the top status bar, but
half the time the icon disappears and nothing has printed. If the printer is in
power save, it will always wake up. Sometimes clicking print a second time will
print the document, other times I just get the printing icon in the top bar,
but nothing prints, and the icon disappears. If I watch the status of the print
job, when it fails, when the processing function is completed is when the
printer icon disappears even though nothing was printed. This problem is not
related to any particular application. I've also tried three different drivers,
and the same thing happens with all of them. I'm running
Ubuntu precise (development branch) Release:12.04 . Cups is 1.5.2-9ubuntu1
Only the ML-1710 is affected. The HP 8000 always prints without fail. I've not
had any issues with cups-pdf either.

Hi Till,

Yesterday there were over 100 updates to Ubuntu 12.04. Nothing there
helped with the printer. I had another 160 updates, including a kernel
up date this morning. Since doing all of the updates today, the printer
has worked perfectly.

[Bug 755036]

2012-04-13 Thread Don Myers
I had no problems using IcedTea plugin 1.1.3- 1ubuntu1.1 with Chrome
Beta in Ubuntu 11.10. I've upgraded four computers to 12.04 Beta 2
within the last week. All are using a newer 1.2 series IcedTea Plugin,
which was updated in the updates that came out yesterday/last night. I
do my own real estate website and use applets for the main navigation,
as well as for marquees. The newer version of Iced Tea works perfectly
with Firefox in Ubuntu 12.04. It crashed very frequently in Chrome Beta
before yesterday's updates. Since the updates, the crashes are not as
frequent, but they still occur. Firefox is still fine. I've replicated
this on three of the four machines running Ubuntu 12.04. I don't have
access to try it on the fourth. I'm sorry, but I'm not a programmer. If
you want me to try to run something to check out, please tell me how to
do whatever, and I will do it. The site I'm experiencing the issues with
is http://www.cbur-ruralproperty.com . The menu is just under the logo.
With the present updates I generally, in Chrome beta, need to refresh
the page to get the menu to come up. Then if I click on the various
links, by about the third or fourth page the plugin crashes.

2012-04-15 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

[Bug 979431] Re: Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-05-14 Thread Don Myers
Hi,

Here is a copy of my report. What is happening is when you first turn on
the printer and check the printer state in the printer status box, it
says idle. When you send the first job to the printer, the status box
changes to Processing - Sending data to printer. However, when the
printing is completed, the printer never returns to the pure idle state.
Instead, it returns to a printer staus of idle - Sending data to
printer even though the job has printed. When it is in this idle -
sending data to printer state that the printer will awake from standby,
the printer icon will appear in the top bar, and the disappear, and
nothing prints evwn though it went through the motions. The only way to
get back to a mode to be able to print is to turn off the printer, and
then turn it back on. At that point the status box just says idle and
the printer will work.

There are apparently updates that have broken this printer. It had
problems under beta 2, then it worked fine, then about a week ago it
started havuing problems again.

[Bug 985363] [NEW] Unity will not work after 12.04 install and upgrade with NVidia 7150m graphics and 295.40 NVidia driver

2012-04-18 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

I replaced Ubuntu 11.10 with 12.04 64 bit beta on my brother's laptop 1
1/2 weeks ago. Everything worked perfectly until last night when I did
updates for him. Following the updates, which were listed as a Partial
Distribution Upgrade, upon rebooting, there was not any display after
entering the password during boot. It is an HP dv6910us laptop with
NVidia Geforce 7150M graphics. Unity and this computer worked perfectly
with 11.10, and also with 12.04 prior to last night. I've tried two
complete fresh installs. The recommended NVidia Driver, which is
presently 295.40-0ununtu1 is not installed during the install of 12.04.
In checking the NVidia site, this driver was just relesed 4/11/12. I'm
guessing that this driver is the issue, and it was updated from whatever
the previous recommended driver was during last nights install. NVidia
did say earlier on their site today that there were instances of it
causing Unity to freeze. If I boot in 2D, the system does funtion. If I
install the 295.40 driver when booted in 2D mode, it will not fix the
problem and I still can't boot in Unity 3D. Thank you for your help.

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-03 Thread Don Myers
Wrobeiro,

Please read post #78 above. Also, not all NVidia systems were affected.
I had one which is working fine with 295-40. But three did not. I do
understand your frustration, If you read my other posts, I spent a good
deal of time dealing with three other machines which did not work.
Successful work arounds were posted in this thread. Also, it appears
that NVidia released a driver now to fix the issues. So far, I've
upgraded 11 systems. The ATI installs went beautifully!

This issue is still present with Ubuntu 13.10 and LibreOffice 4.1.5.3.
>From reading the comments above, some are saying this is a feature. I
don't think so, and the collate should not be an issue. Single page
dosuments have the same thing happen. For 10 copies of a single page the
printer gets 10 print jobs of 1 page each and not 1 print job of 10
copies. This has happened on my two office printers here in the last
week when I'm in a hurry and forget to make a pdf before printing so I
can print the documents as PDF files. These printers are a Samsung ML-
2955ND and an Epson WorkForce WP-4530.

[Bug 1066932] Re: Documents Retrived as Tiff Images Print as Blank Pages

2013-10-06 Thread Don Myers
Hi,

I'm the person or initally reported this bug. This is an update. I've
upgraded my computers to Ubuntu 13.10 Beta 2. The issue above still
happens with openjdk-7 and 8, as well as the Oracle version of Java 7
and 8. When trying to print the documents in OpenJDK 7 or 8 or Oracle
Java 7 or 8, the time frame for each image is about 5 times longer than
the time frame when using OpenJDK6 or Oracle Java 6. The other thing
that happens which I guessing is the real problem is that in all
versions of 7 and 8, duing the capture process is says it is redrawing
the images, which is probably why it takes so long compared to 6, and
probably in redrawing the images, they become corroupted. I'm sure my
time is limited as to how long I can continue to run OpenJDK-6 safely is
coming to an end. It would be greatly appreciated if this issue could be
dealt with.

Please let me know if you would like me to do more logging, or provide
any additional information.

Thank you.

[Bug 1236120] Re: Cups-pdf Prints Blank Page

2013-10-12 Thread Don Myers
Hi Till,

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The physical printers on the
network work fine. I have Ubuntu 13.10 on three machines. They all do the same
thing. I will send the error log, printout, and the output from cups showuing
the same file which did print properly in the printout attachment. I get no
data in any pdfs from cups-pdf in any application, including Firefox,
Thunderbird, GEdit, LO Writer, LO Calc. But there is one exception. Do you
remember this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1066932
OpenJDK 7 and OpenJDK 8 do not work yet. Open JDK 6 does work yet in 13.10.
From your comments in that bug report:
"Don, your captured print job data is a PostScript file without the images, so
the "Getting the data which would go to the printer" step is not needed any
more as the images already get lost by the desktop application. In this case it
is the Java engine. To print you have to click a button supplied by the Java
application, not the usual "File"/"Print" of the browser, which means that the
Java app generates the output stream (the stream would also be PDF if it comes
from the browser)." If I print using the print button supplied by the java
application, in any of the three computers with 13.10, the output of cups-pdf
is fine. But that is the only time I get any output other than a blank page.

This is the same file as in the printout in the last attachement. When I
open Nautilus to look for the created pdf files, it almost looks like
there is something in it for an instance and then the icon goes blank.

[Bug 1236120] Re: Cups-pdf Prints Blank Page

2013-10-14 Thread Don Myers
Hi Till

There isn't any. Only the two networked printers show up. Attached is a
screenshot.

One other tidbit. Last week I purged and reinstalled cups-pdf a couple
of time trying to get it to work. I had gone into Localhost 631 and
noticed in the PDF Printer it listed the driver as Local Raw Printer
(grayscale). I assume if it says grayscale, it will not print in color.
I'm 99% sure that it used to print in color.

[Bug 1066932] [NEW] Documents Retrived as Tiff Images Print as Blank Pages

2012-10-15 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

I print deeds and other documents from court house records. They are
accessed by a browser through java. Both Firefox and Chrome work fine.
Java is used to retrieve these documents for viewing. For printing,
there is a special button to click for printing which allows page
selection, printer selection, etc. The pages are retrieved to the
printer as TIFF images. When printing them in 12.04 using cups
1.5.3-0ubuntu4 evertything is fine. When trying to print them in 12.10
with cups 1.6.1-0ubuntu10 the pages are blank. This happens whether or
not I'm printing to a printer or using cups-pdf. When I click the print
button in 12.04, the process says fetching page 1, printing page 1,
fetching page 2, printing page 2, etc. In 12.10 the process shows the
same thing, but the time fetching is about 3 times longer than in 12.04.
As I said, In 12.10 the images are blank. In 12.04 the document prints
perfectly.

In the lsb_release -rd in the terminal, the release just shows as Ubuntu
12.10. Since both 12.04 and 12.10 both appear to be using the same java
release, and since I have the same browser versions and they are current
on both systems, the only thing different is the version of cups between
the two systems.

[Bug 979431] Re: Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-10-15 Thread Don Myers
Hi Ted,

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2. Initially (about 2 weeks ago), the
Samsung ML-1710 was working fine. There have been several cups updates
since then. I now have the exact same issue as originally reported at
the the top of this page. When I boot up and first turn the printer on,
the first job prints fine, but then unless I turn off the printer and
turn it back on, each subsequent job will wake the printer up from
sleep, the printing icon shows up in right hand side of the top panel,
it disappears, but nothing ever prints.

Don

[Bug 1060343] [NEW] [Acer Aspire E360] suspend/resume failure

2012-10-02 Thread Don Myers
Public bug reported:

I just upgrades from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10. Upon reboot it said there
was a problem identifying my video. I went through a couple of windows
and it said it was able to restore my previous settings. However on
boot, after entering my password, I only get my background picture to
display. I don't have any unity or anything else. Then it wanted to
report a bug, and I said yest, and after that a few minutes later Google
Chrome browser opened for me to file this bug report. Originally it
would not accept my login information, so I hit the power button to shut
down. Instead of it shutting down, the computer just kept running and
would never turn off completely. I finally got back to this point.

[Bug 1060343] Re: [Acer Aspire E360] suspend/resume failure

2012-10-02 Thread Don Myers
The title there was put in place automatically. There was initially a
shutdown problem also, but my display was my primary concern. I tried
using the terminal to purge the ATI driver, and then reinstalled it, but
there wasn't anyway I could get anything to display other than my
background picture. I just finished doing a clean install, and
everything seems to be working fine now, but I'm just in the testing
process. I've now done several reboots, and updates, and shutdowns. With
the clean isntall on this system, everything relative to the shutdown
restart, as well as the video display all seem to be working well. So
the problems were an issue with going the upgrade route from 12.04
instead of a clean install.

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-06-03 Thread Don Myers
I have a secondary computer at the office which is not used frequently.
I was using it the last few days last week. It had a clean, updated
install of 12.04 64 bit. The video performancwe was very laggy. So I
took a look at what it had for video. It was nvidia, and thew 295-40
driver was installed. In synaptic, as of Friday, the current nvidia
driver available through the repositories was 295-40. I ended up using
the swat 295-53 driver, and the video improved sigfnigicantly.

Re: [Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-06-04 Thread Don Myers
Hi,

Attached are two screen shots from Synaptic. I'll insert them here also,
but I'm not sure they will display in the body of the response on the board.
Nvidia 1

I locked the 295.53 driver once it was installed. Before I installed
that driver, nvidia-current was 295.40 and it showed as the installed
driver. This computer did not have the issues that were described in
this bug. There are three computers (one a co-workers, and two belonging
to my brother) which did. I upgraded those all to either 295.49 or
295.53 two to three weeks ago using swat. I also locked those drivers on
those machines. This computer I did the end of last week was working
really laggy with the video. I actually didn't check what it had for
video until I got tired of it being so laggy last week. While this
computer is not used frequently (it is a back up to my main system and I
primarily use it to upload video while I'm editing video on my main
computer) a couple of times each week I do boot it and apply upgrades.
It was completely upgraded when I did the 295.53 install the end of last
week, and as I said above, 295.40 showed as the installed driver.

Here is the second screen shot from Synaptic:
Nvidia 2

It does show 295.49 in two nvidia packages, but none of these, if they
were here last week, had installed and overwritten the 295.40
nvidia-current package.

Please let me know if I can be of further help.

Don

Sorry!! Attached are the screen shots for 214. You are correct in
your assumption about following the nvidia-current package. Should the
updates have automatically switched from nvidia-current to nvidia-
current-updates? It looks like I can only do one attachemtn, but I tried
to do both. The first one if two don't show up showed the 295.53 driver
as the installed driver and I locked it.

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-04-30 Thread Don Myers
In response to post #63, I have three computers with Nividia. One is a
desktop with a GForce 9500 card. It works perfectly fine with the 295-40
driver. Two computers, one desktop and one laptop, have integrated
Nividia graphics. I'm running Nouveau on both. The resolution is
automatically, corrrectly recognized. The desktop has a 19 inch
widescreen monitor and it is at 1440 x 900. The other is a 15 inch
laptop and it is at 1280 x 800.

Tom, when you are at the login screen, instead of typing your password
in, click on the little gear in the top right of the login box, and
select Ubuntu 2D. then type in your pass work. You system should work in
2D.

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-05-01 Thread Don Myers
Wal,

Thank you so much for your post #76. That did work perfectly. I had
tried the driver from x-swat earlier today, but ended up with 298-40
since I didn't realize that a full description of the driver was needed.
I just had nvidia-current with nothing else in the apt-get install line

Bruce,

Thank you for your post. I guess I should not be happy that the
instructions from Walt did work. I had the beta on 8 machines. I was
tremendously impressed. Then after investing about 16 hours in making
some open source drives work on some machines with Nvidia, and getting
really frustrated with some others, it sort of took the luster off. But
12.04 is still a tremendous release. When you say about it being
irresponsible for Ubuntu to ship a driver with a security problem, you
are absolutely right. It is a shame that something by a third party
could mess up such a wonderful launch of a product. I've been using
Ubuntu for 3+ years, and this is the first major glitz that I have
personally seen happen. Ubuntu was certainly between a rock and a hard
place. I was just hoping Nvidia would have had things fixed by last
Thursday.

2012-05-02 Thread Don Myers
Amir,

I've had 4 machines with NVidia drivers. One is fine with the 295.40
driver. One is fine with the nouveau driver, including 3D. On the other
two machines the nouveau driver will only work in 2G. The nouveau driver
seems to have different capabilities with different versions of NVidia.

Re: [Bug 979431] Re: Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-09-01 Thread Don Myers
Hi Till,

I have not had any issues except once last week. The printer took the
job. It awoke from power save mode, but then just quit thinking it had
printed the job. But this happened only once. I turned it off and back
on and it was fine. I did have an issue with the same printer (Samsung
ML-1710) when printing a single page LibreOffice 3.6.1.2document that I
wanted 3 copies of. It would only print one at a time. I haven't had
time to research it yet, but I think it is a LibreOffice issue with that
version.

Thank you for your follow up and all of your hard work!

Re: [Bug 686703] Re: 046d:c501 USB mouse does not get detected on bootup 25% of the time (USB bus reset)

2012-07-25 Thread Don Myers
I have not had any issues in Ubuntu 12.04. When it was an issue, a
generic mouse would not work but a Logitech mouse would work. Changing
the generic mouse to a front USB port would work, but using a rear port
would not work. If the mouse was frozen, simply unplugging it and
plugging it back in would allow it to work fine. Thinking about it, my
wife may have had an issue with her generic mouse in 12.04, but if she
did, I plugged it into a front USB port.

[Bug 755036] Re: chrome plugin crashes when calling javascript function

2012-07-15 Thread Don Myers
With Chrome 21.0.1180.41 Beta, java is not functional. I receive a
message that the IcedTea is out of date. All updates from Ubuntu have
been applied. I have openjdk-6-jre version 6b24.1.11.3-1ubuntu0.12.04.1.
The plugin is IcedTea-plugin1.2-2ubuntu1. Shouldn't this be updated
through Ubuntu?

[Bug 982485] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40: Unity 3D does not work at all with the new nvidia driver

2012-06-15 Thread Don Myers
Matt,

I upgraded 4 computers using the drivers from swat 4 to 6 weeks ago.
Three have 295.49, and one has 295.53. The 295.40 driver was nvidia-
current. The swat drivers replace the driver in nvidia-current, which
was 295.40 originally. I locked the nvidia-current from swat using
synaptic and no updates have changed the driver on any of these
computers. I understand that the 295.49 driver is in nvidia-current-
upgrades and not in nvidia-current. One nvidia 6500 card worked
perfectly in Ubuntu 11.04 and earlier. This is a backup computer. In
11.10 when I would do something, it always seemed to be a little
sluggish. With the 294.40 driver in Ubuntu 12.04 it was worse. The
295.53 driver improved things a lot, but it srtill wasn't right. A week
ago I went looking for a video card to replace it. I got a relly good
ATI card for $24 That is a much, much better card than I had. The
computer works great now.

Don

[Bug 889811] Re: Printer-driver for Konica Minolta PagePro 1400w is not found automaticly

2011-12-15 Thread Don Myers
I have a related problem running Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit trying to install a
Konica-Minolta 1400w printer. When I connect the printer, Ubuntu sees
then printer, and proceeds to install it. Then I get a message it is
installed and the printer is shown in the available printers. However,
if I try to print a test page or any document, nothing happens. In
synaptic, if I type in Konica, it shows that min12xxw is installed. The
only way I could get the printer to print was to go to openprinting.org,
and downloading the most current PPD, going to Printers, selecting the
1400w, right clicking to bring up properties, clicking change under the
make and model, under Choose Driver, selecting Provide PPD, and then
selecting to replace the existing driver with the new PPD. Then the
printer worked perfectly. I replicated all of the above on a second
computer also with Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit. It appears there is a bug in the
min12xxw in the Ubuntu repository, or something goes wrong in the
install, and the new PPD from openprinting.org needs to be installed to
correct the problem.

[Bug 889811] Re: Printer-driver for Konica Minolta PagePro 1400w is not found automaticly

2011-12-16 Thread Don Myers
This is just a little more information to add to my previous post. With
the 1400w printer not installed at all I tried to install it using the
cups interface in localhost using the most recent PPD. The results were
the same as when Ubuntu would find the connected printer, install it,
but it would not print anything. The only way I got it working was to
let Ubuntu install the printer, and then to apply the current PPD to
have it work.

[Bug 868904] Re: Redshift fails to start with session due to geoclue failure

2012-01-05 Thread Don Myers
On two machines with Ubuntu 11.10, it will not start automatically even
though startup applications shows it is supposed to start. When booting
it looks like it is trying to start, but then stalls, the desktop
picture flashes, and then the boot completes normally. If I click the
dash button, then type in redshift, and then left click the icon, it
loads, and I get an icon for it in the top bar. Then everything works
fine until shutdown. If I don't click on the button in the top bar and
select to quit redshift, both computers freeze during shutdown. The only
way to turn them off is to hold the power button down.

[Bug 1066932] Re: Documents Retrived as Tiff Images Print as Blank Pages

2013-04-12 Thread Don Myers
Thank you for your response!

Attached are the output files for the Cups error log and the Capturing
print job data. The only thing printed on the Capturing print job data
is text at the bottom of the page. The entire tiff picture area is
blank.

I worked for about 3 hours trying to make the Getting the data which would go
to the printer to work. There was already a line for FieldDevice No, so I would
change it as root in gedit to FieldDeviceYes and save it. Here is the terminal
input and output:
root@don-NY553AAR-ABA-e9220y:/home/don# lpadmin -p test -E -v
file:/tmp/printout -P /etc/cups/ppd/Samsung-ML-2950.ppd
lpadmin: File device URIs have been disabled. To enable, see the FileDevice in
"/etc/cups/cups-files.conf". This is in Ubuntu 13.04 Beta 2. I would then
verify that the file was saved with FieldDevice Yes, and would still keep
getting the message the message above. The test printer would show up as a
printer. But when trying to print the file, no print job icon would ever appear
in the bar at the top, but it would for the other printers. And no file could
be found in the tmp folder.

I had three computers with 12.10 on whcih have now all been updated to
13.04 beta 2. It doesn't matter if I have 12.10 or 13.04, or if I'm
printing to any of the attached porinters or to cups-pdf, or which
computer I'm using. The results are the same - just blank pages with the
text at the bottom. Above in one of my posts is the output from 12.04
using the cups printer. It worked perfectly in 10.04, 10.10, 11.04,
11.10, and 12.04. The issue happened in 12.10. I'm guessing it has to do
with the updated cups version shipped with 12.10. I'm also guessing
there is an issue with a filter telling the printer what to print. In
10.04 through 12.04, the printing was very fast. I'm guessing it sends
each page as a print job. The cups error log attached should be showing
multiple pages. What I see on the screen is Fetching Page 1, Printing
Page 1, Fetching Page 2, Printing Page 2, etc. This process is 4 times
slower in 12.10 and 13.04.

Please give me some tips on being able to get the getting the "Getting
the data which would go to the printer" file to work properly so I can
send it to you.

Thanks again for your help with this!

Don

[Bug 1066932] Re: Documents Retrived as Tiff Images Print as Blank Pages

2013-04-13 Thread Don Myers
Till, you hit the nail on the head!!! You are wonderful

I have no way of going back to my 12.10 installs since they have all been
updated to 13.04. But I ran some tests on 13.04. Here are the results:
IcedTea-7-jre - current version from repository - fails
Oracle 1.7.0_17 - from http://www.webupd8.org - fails
IcedTea-6-jre - current version from repository - works perfectly
Oracle 1.6.0_43 - from http://www.webupd8.org - works perfectly
Windows 7 with Java 7, Update 17 - works perfectly

I have verified these results on two machines. Overall, I hadn't had any
problems that I knew of with Java 7 on Ubuntu. But for doing this
printing from the court house records (and your description of how it
works is perfect - I just hadn't figured out that it might have been a
Java problem instead of a printing problem) apparently there is a
problem with how Ubuntu, or Linux in general, handles getting the images
using Java 7, either IcedTea or Oracle. Using Java 7 in Windows to do
the same printing works perfectly, so it seems like it isn't an issue
with Java 7 on the court house end.

I am most happy now that I can print the documents again in Ubuntu
without having to shut down and reboot in Windows just to print a deed.

Is there any additional testing I can do to help out the developers
solve the issue with Java 7?

Thank you so very much for your assistance!!!

Don

[Bug 576648] Re: package nvidia-* failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-* kernel module failed to build (Unable to determine the target kernel version.)

2013-04-22 Thread Don Myers
I just did an new install of Ubuntu 13.04 this evening using the 13.04
Beta 2 DVD. The computer has nvidia video. Everything worked fine. Then
I did the updates as I always do after a new install. I rebooted, and no
video. This system has only Ubuntu on, so I don't get any options to
select from when I boot. How do I try the $ sudo apt-get install linux-
headers-3.8.0-18-generic option listed above to try to get things
working again? Live cd possibly? Is there a way to bring up a menu when
booting? Otherwise the only solution I would know is to wipeout the
install and start over. The location of this computer has a slow
internet connection so I hope I don't have to do that.

[Bug 979431] Re: Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-05-15 Thread Don Myers
I did the following today. I downloaded the 2.0 driver for 64 bit systems (I'm
running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit) from openprinting.org:
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Samsung/Samsung-ML-1710

I deleted the Samsung ML-1710 from my printers. In Printers in 12.04,
right click on the icon and select delete.

I installed the downloaded driver from above through the software center
by right clicking it and selecting open with the software center.

I had the printer on when I ran the driver install, but it did not show
up in the printers box after the driver was installed.

I shut down and rebooted. The printer was there, and so far it is
working Yea! Now after a print job, instead of the
status box saying idle - sending data to printer, it says idle -
Rendering completed.

Hopefully this helps others, and hopefully it keep working this
way!

[Bug 979431] Re: Samsung ML-1710 Fails to Print

2012-05-16 Thread Don Myers
The above information from yesterday did not totally fix the problem.
Today it would work for a while, and then even though it would say idle
- Rendering completed, I had the same issue before. This happened twice.
What I found each time was if I would print a test page, then it would
work normally again for a while.

[Bug 1066932] Re: Documents Retrived as Tiff Images Print as Blank Pages

2012-11-19 Thread Don Myers
Here is some additional information. I've attached a view of the
broswer. When viewing deeds, a separate toolbar comes up in the browser
which is used to view different pages in the deed. This toolbar includes
the printing button for the deed, which is used in place of the regular
browser printing button. When a page is viewed in the browser, the
browser is displaying a tiff image of the particular page. The second
attachment is a pdf file printed on 7/5/12 with cups-pdf in Ubuntu
12.04. No problem. I've used Ubuntu continuously since 8.10, and I've
never had any problem printing these pages until Ubuntu 12.10. The third
attachement is a copy of the same deed printed with Ubuntu 12.10 today.
Please note that the time stamp does print on the bottom of the pages,
but the rest of the page, which is a tiff image, just shows up as blank.
It is really annoying, and time consuming, to need to boot into Window
just to print a deed. I updated both of my work computers to Ubuntu
12.10 and don't have access to 12.04 at the office. One computer at home
still has 12.04 on. Deeds still print fine from it.

Your help in solving this would be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing I
will need to send the second and third attachments as separate posts.

One additional piece of information. If I print to a printer instead of
cups in Ubuntu 12.10, I get the blank pages from the printer with just
the time stamp on the bottom, the same as if I print to cups, so it is
more than jsut a cups issue.
