This is just a little more information to add to my previous post. With the 1400w printer not installed at all I tried to install it using the cups interface in localhost using the most recent PPD. The results were the same as when Ubuntu would find the connected printer, install it, but it would not print anything. The only way I got it working was to let Ubuntu install the printer, and then to apply the current PPD to have it work.
