[Bug 138691] Re: system hangs at shutdown

2008-07-27 Thread Derek White
I went into recovery mode several times today to check my drive and try
it out since I've never used it before. I had no "halt:" errors this
time, just my usual "ata1.00:" errors. I tried using 'shutdown' with -r,
-h, -H, and -HF and all resulted in ata1.00 errors from recovery console
and gnome-terminal.

I just tried adding "apm power_off=1" and it made no difference. I got
the normal network messages, screen flickered to the splash screen with
a completely black bar and the devices inside my tower sounded like they
powered down immediately when the splash came up. Then it just sits
there until the "ata1.00:" error. Hence, I removed it.

To me, it seems like program 'A' powers down the HDs before program 'B'
(the one that produces the "ata1.00:" errors) is done with it. In System
> Administration > Services I have both acpid and apmd running (default
8.04 install from LiveCD). This was the same in 7.10; so, it's most
likely normal, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

I decided to write down the error and this is what happens:

...
*Unmounting temp filesystems...
*Deactivating swap...
*Unmounting local filesystems...
*Will now halt
halt: Unable to iterate IDE devices: No such file or directory
[time] ata1.00: Exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen

So, Yay!? It powers down after awhile...I guess that's good new?

[Bug 267828] Re: switch user does not work

2008-12-09 Thread Derek White
Ditto.

>From the screen-saver lock screen dialog, click switch user, display
resets itself, blank screen appears, move mouse and lock screen dialog
reappears. Most of the time it only takes 2 tries to have success.
Rarely, it simply won't go and I have to log in and switch user from the
gnome menu. After the problem shows itself and I log back into the
account (which is an admin account) I get an error dialog saying
roughly: "The X server failed to start properly. Perhaps the server is
not setup correctly." The error message dialog is small and is properly
themed. It does not match the one in the screen-shot above.

[Bug 298536] [NEW] Appointment title missing from systray dialog.

2008-11-15 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Setup an appointment a few days ago.
It went off this morning, then again 2 more times because of the alarms/etc.
When I got up a few minutes ago, and unlocked my computer (it wasn't asleep,
just monitor off), I clicked the systray icon and the dialog was as seen in the
attached screen shot.
I could click on all three 'rows' of titles, but the actual text was not there.

My previous alarm, which went off this past Tuesday, showed up just fine.
This was the second appointment I have ever used on 8.10.

When I click on the time/date to bring up the calendar/appt/locations,
the appointment shows up just fine. It also shows up fine in Evolution.

[Bug 281633] Re: Can't burn/erase cd using brasero

2009-01-27 Thread Derek White
I am getting the same problem on my Sony DVD drive (DRU-830A) using
Brasero.

Downloaded a mp3 for a friend: http://podcast.kingschurchjax.com/012509samw.mp3
Opened Brasero, clicked the button to start an Audio CD
Dragged the mp3 from my desktop to the Brasero window and dropped it
After a minute or two (its a big mp3 and I'm on a 1.5Ghz) the info loaded, and
I changed the title/artist
Put in an 80 minute CD, canceled Ubuntu's blank CD auto-run dialog
Brasero automatically selected the CD I inserted
Clicked the Burn button, then clicked Properties
At this point, I see my weird speed listings: Max speed, 31.9 x (CD), 23.9 x
(CD), 16.0 x (CD), 8.0 x (CD), 8.0 x (CD)

[ A tiny tangent. ]
Yup, that's two 8.0x speed settings. (Why? Another bug? Been like that forever,
since my first Ubuntu: 7.10.)

Selected 16.0 x (CD) [As I said, I have a slower system - it can't keep up with
24x (or 23.9 x - stupid Brasero) and definitely not 32x]
Burn directly, and burnproof both checked
Simulate is grayed out
Eject is checked
Temp files set to /tmp with 3.9GB free-space
Clicked OK to start the burn process

Brasero took awhile (again) to prepare, then started burning it.
It got to roughly 7%, then started fixating the drive for some reason, like it
would do when finished burning.
The dialog never went away. After about 5 minutes the graphics on the dialog
would not redraw after minimize/restore and I clicked X, waited for it to not
respond, and let Ubuntu stop it.

I removed the CD, it was partially burnt, Ubuntu loaded it up as an
audio-cd with Japanese/Chinese text, lol, now part of my Tesla coil
collection. I restarted Brasero, and started over using the same process
detailed above, except I choose the top-most 8.0 x (CD) setting for the
speed and unchecked burn directly without saving. When I hit OK to start
the burn, I immediately got the "Session error : the drive can't be
locked (ongoing burning process) (brasero_burn_record burn.c:2524)"
error.

I closed down Brasero, checked System Monitor for Brasero, cdrecord,
anything out of the ordinary. The only thing I found was that gvfsd-burn
was open and using a third of a MB of memory; gvfsd-http was also open
using half a MB, even with firefox closed down after dl'ing the mp3.

[ Questions about bug. ]
It seems like gvfs has been going through major updates lately, could
gvfs-backends (which includes -burn) be causing this? Or is -burn only used
with nautilus...

Anyways, that's where I am. I am sure a reboot would fix this, but there
should be no reason for that.

My drive can be opened, closed, mounted, ejected, etc. all OK, why does Brasero
think it's in use?
What does Brasero use to lock the drive for burning?
How can I reverse it, since the force quit of Brasero left it there?
Can this be done automatically when Brasero starts? (i.e. - check to see if
drive is REALLY in use?)

[ Other thoughts. ]
Finally, if anyone can help me, why did Brasero start fixating after 7%?
Shouldn't burnproof have prevented a buffer under-run?

P.S. - 'Places' > 'CD/DVD Creator' > Add a file...or more > 'Write to
Disc' lists 37.6x, 28.2x, 18.8x, & 9.4x as my speeds. Why is everything
different? My drive really can't do all this...shouldn't it be
calculated the same way in all programs across the board?
Inconsistencies should not be this apparent for the same drive.

[Bug 279774] Re: Firefox only restores previous session/tabs when restarting after disabling an extension, if Browsing History is cleared at close.

2009-01-29 Thread Derek White
Been a while...

Should this have been reported upstream, or what needs done to fix it?
Because I am still leaving the clear browser history check-box un-
checked, but would like to check it and preserve my saved tabs. With it
checked, during an extension induced restart, tabs are preserved, so I
know the functionality is in the code, it just needs to be activated for
saved tabs as well.

The first message is referred to in step 3 above and the second is in step 4
above.
Also, I made a mistake in step 4, there is no icon present for disconnections
in the notify-osd bubble - icons only appear when connected. All nm-applet
icons are as stated.

NOTE: At step 4, occasionally the CDMA connection gets reconnected... It
happens rarely and I cannot seem to reproduce it on demand.

[Bug 390448] [NEW] [On UPS Power] Display sleep inactivity stuck.

2009-06-21 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

This has been a problem for me forever: since I installed 8.04, upgraded
to 8.10, re-installed 8.10, and upgraded to 9.04.

In gnome-power-preferences on the "On UPS Power" tab, the "Put display
to sleep when inactive for:" slider is stuck on 23. When I say stuck, I
don't mean I cannot move the slider. I can move it from 1 to 61 just
fine, but once I close the window and re-open it, the slider is back at
23. My changes are ignored.

The problem with this is obvious.

[Bug 390459] [NEW] Sliders do not reset when screensaver is disabled

2009-06-21 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I disabled the "Activate screensaver when computer is idle" check-box in
gnome-screensaver-preferences.

I expected gnome-power-manager to recalculate the sliders to start at 1
minute; or I expected gpm to continue using screensaver's "...idle
after" time as the base.

Neither happened.

screensaver's "...idle after" slider is set to 25 minutes.
gpm's "On AC Power" tab's Actions and Display sliders both start at 26 minutes.
gpm's "On AC Power" tab's Display slider is set to 30 minutes.

After 5 minutes my display goes to sleep. It is completely ignoring the
25 minute idle limit I set and is taking the 30 minutes and subtracting
the 25 minute idle time from it giving me 5 minutes before my display
turns off.

When can we get these two preferences on the same dialog box and
actually have them work!?

[Bug 390460] [NEW] [On UPS Power] Sleep inactivity cannot go lower than 26 minutes

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

gnome-power-preferences > On UPS Power tab.

"Put computer to sleep when inactive for:" slider will not go lower than
26 minutes.

I can tell it's tied into the screensaver idle time. This may be
appropriate for a laptop, but is grossly incorrect for a desktop using a
battery backup. If I have a power outage, my screensaver settings should
go out the window.

When on UPS power, sleep inactivity should not be tied to screensaver
idle time.

[Bug 390459] Re: Sliders do not reset when screensaver is disabled

2009-06-21 Thread Derek White
After more research this is a UI bug.

In gconf, apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout reflects different values
than the UI shows.

On AC Power tab:
actions shows 45 minutes, gconf shows 1200 seconds (20min)
display shows 30 minutes, gconf shows 300 seconds (5min)
On UPS Power tab:
actions slider shows 26 minutes (minimum it can go), gconf shows 60 seconds
(1min)
display shows 23 minutes, gconf shows 300 seconds - when I move slider gconf
still says 300 seconds

[Bug 390488] [NEW] gpm manual errors: 8.2 & 8.6

2009-06-21 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

8.2 - The caution/warning section
"You still use a small amount of battery power whilst suspended, so is not
recommended for the low power action. If you remove AC power on a desktop, or
run out of battery power on a laptop then you will lose your work."

Should be:
...so is not recommended for the low or critical power actions. ...

Reasoning: I shouldn't use it for low, but I can for critical? Clarity.

8.6 - Title
"Why does not my IBM laptop have the brightness sliders in Power Preferences?"

Should be:
Why doesn't Power Preferences show the brightness sliders for my IBM laptop?

Reasoning: The laptop doesn't "have" possession of the slider, power
prefs does. Furthermore, "why does not " is not correct grammar,
it is "why does not"; however, when using it as a contraction it
is usually accepted, as in my correction.

Would also need changed in the index, at the top.

[Bug 271246] Re: debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

2009-06-03 Thread Derek White
After attempting upgrade today I had several errors with mysql, cups, and dpkg
in general.
It all seems to be caused by the following error:

debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by
another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

I also noticed the same error in syslog (or .xsession-errors) earlier, while
using startupmanager.
Upon opening synaptic:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Prior to doing that, the recommended 'fuser -v /var/cache/debconf/config.dat'
returned nothing.
Returning to startupmanager...it seems that su-to-root (and other related
programs) was active, running something that gave the following in my
.xsession-errors log:
---
A new version of /boot/grub/menu.lst is available, but the version installed
currently has been locally modified.

  1. install the package maintainer's version
  2. keep the local version currently installed
  3. show the differences between the versions
  4. show a side-by-side difference between the versions
  5. show a 3-way difference between available versions
  6. do a 3-way merge between available versions (experimental)
  7. start a new shell to examine the situation

What would you like to do about menu.lst?
---

So, in my case, this was a startupmanager problem - it has no facility
to notify the user that this input is required...and waiting in a non-
existent terminal. I added this as a bug a while ago, but no one is
currently supporting startupmanager and the bug has gone without a fix.
I dunno, maybe it's a problem with 'sudo update-initramfs -u'? To
whomever this problem belongs, in my case initramfs noticed either the
menu.lst~ or the menu.lst.backup and wanted user input to decide whether
or not to update menu.lst - and startupmanager has no such facility to
let the user know.

Upon killing ucf, this showed up in my .xsession-errors:

/usr/sbin/update-grub: line 1036: 11220 Terminated ucf
--debconf-ok --debconf-template grub/update_grub_changeprompt_threeway
--three-way "$buffer" $ucf_menu_file

So, maybe it's update-grub's fault? =)

Anyways, after killing ucf, 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' still didn't fix
the packages, so I found su-to-root still running and End'd it; but
still, update-grub & 'python /usr/sbin/startupmanager' (after attempting
an End) are in a Zombie state and cannot be End'd or Kill'd. Even 'su
kill -9' or -anything won't end them. ... OK, so 'sudo killall -g
update-grub' finally killed them all.

Then I ran 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' and it told me that mysql-
server-5.0 was in really bad shape and I should re-install it, the other
4-5 packages were configured OK. After a 'sudo apt-get install
--reinstall mysql-server-5.0 mysql-server' everything seems OK and the
'sudo dpkg --configure -a' returns cleanly. And, most importantly, my
LAMP server is functional again!

This may have been, and probably was, over-kill...but at least you know
this error can be over-come (without a logout or restart). It is also
not a bug of any one program, many different circumstances can cause
this "debconf: DbDriver"config":" error to rear its nasty head.

Final Note: The requested 'fuser' command never once showed anything, it
always returned cleanly. It does not appear to be a valid debug tool in
this case.

*** Firefox/Launchpad won't let me delete the attachment, so you guys
get to see my apt-get update terminal logs...how fun!

[Bug 213006] Re: [Hardy] startupmanager-1.9.10-2 hangs at "Performing post-configureation tasks"

2009-06-03 Thread Derek White
It happened again...See the following for detailed description:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fontconfig/+bug/271246/comments/7

Maybe update-grub doesn't like a menu.lst~ or a menu.lst.backup being in
/boot/grub?

After fixing the problems listed in bug 271246 and removing the 2 old
files, running startupmanager from a terminal window brings up the ASCI
window during "Performing pre-configuration tasks" and I selected to
keep the local version (I'm gonna redo it all anyways).

Did my stuff in sum, and during post-config, the ASCI window came up
again...selecting to view a 3-way difference shows the following:

5a
||| Older
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/dereksbox-root ro
splash vga=795
===
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=/dev/mapper/dereksbox-root ro
vga=795 splash
>>> New
.
4a
<<< Current
.

The only difference seems to be the order of vga= and splash... I
selected to install the package maintainer's version (sum's?) this time.

Complete terminal log:

no idea what this is, folders are fine for me, not even the ;1 on them,
the ;1 is only on files, folders are fine and can be opened fine with

2009-06-06 Thread Derek White
Gnome Bug 562673 – gvfsd-archive mounts files with uppercase filename
Resolved by adding Joliet extension support to libarchive.

...

Why is that bug linked to this one?
Is the missing Joliet extension support also causing the addition of ;1 to
filenames?
If not, can we remove the external bug watch?
If it is in fact correct, in which version of libarchive can we expect to see
the fix? (Up-to-date Ubuntu 9.04 is using the libarchive1 package, version
2.4.17-2.)

[Bug 384622] [NEW] When a CDMA connection is established, the notify-osd bubble flashes several times before settling.

[Bug 384635] [NEW] CMDA connection "Available to all users" will not "Disconnect".

2009-06-07 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Adapter: Verizon Broadband USB727 by Novatel Wireless 3G CDMA

This should cover all circumstances:
1) Remove card from USB port (nm should disconnect automatically).
2) Right-click nm-applet & select "Edit Connections..."
3) Select "Mobile Broadband" tab and delete entry (or entries).
4) Close "Network Connections" window.
5) Insert broadband card.
6) Once the device becomes 'managed', left-clicking the nm-applet shows that a
new connection has appeared - "Auto Mobile Broadband (CDMA) connection".
7) Click on it and you will connect.
8) Left-click on nm-applet again, and you see the Disconnect entry. Click that,
and you will be disconnected.
[The remaining steps can be done on or off-line, it doesn't matter. I
reconnected first.]
9) Right-click nm-applet & select "Edit Connections...", then select the
"Mobile Broadband" tab.
10) Select the "Auto ... (CDMA) connection" and click the Edit button.
11) Make the connection "Available to all users" and click Apply (type in your
password if needed for system policy, letting it remember doesn't effect the
bug).
Note: Changing this setting (in any way) WILL result in nm killing the
connection, forcing you to manually re-enable it. [Another bug?]
12) Close "Network Connections" window.
13) Left-click the nm-applet & select Disconnect.

You are still connected, there is no notify-osd bubble, nothing happens. To
disconnect, you have to disable networking, then re-enable networking
(right-click on nm-applet - the only check-box).
No logs go bold in log viewer, so it doesn't seem like anything is a happening
at all.
If I remove the "Available to all users" check-box, the connection is killed, I
re-enable it, and "Disconnect" works again.

[Bug 384642] [NEW] "Connect automatically" CDMA connection displays incorrect nm-applet icon & notify-osd messages when manually disconnected.

2009-06-07 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

1) Have a CDMA connection with "Connect automatically" checked in Edit
Connections and be connected to it.
2) Left-click nm-applet and select Disconnect.

[This is just weird and should not be there.]
3) Immediately, the nm-applet icon turns into the connecting icon (2 dark
balls with blue comet-thing swirling clock-wise) and an icon-less notify-osd
bubble comes up showing:
Network
Disconnected

[This is normal, ideal, and should stay.]
4) After some time, the nm-applet icon turns into the normal "Disconnected"
icon and, at the same time, a second notify-osd bubble pops up with the normal
icon and disconnected text:
Network
Disconnected - you are now offline

I don't know how much of the nm-applet icons are from my icon set, but I have:
Theme: DarkRoom
Icons: black-white 2 gloss (installed in 8.10 and preserved through the upgrade)

+ Added numbering to make the progression more noticeable.

[Bug 353921] Re: notification-daemon does not respect gconf preferences

2009-06-07 Thread Derek White
I confirm this is still an issue on Ubuntu 9.04, fully up-to-date.

This has been a problem since I upgraded from 8.10, why is it not
getting attention?

To re-iterate:
System > Preferences > Pop-Up Notifications does not do anything. The Theme nor
the Position settings work. They do nothing, not even a mention of an error in
any logs.

For me, a single display user, this is just annoying.
For others [see above], using multi-display, this is a show stopper!

Please, can it get some attention finally?

[Bug 300240] Re: gtkpod very slow after every click

2009-06-13 Thread Derek White
Linked the upstream bug report.

For the non-svn patch that was submitted to gtkpod's sourceforge bug tracker,
the direct d/l link is:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/download.php?group_id=67873&atid=519275&file_id=327399&aid=2793093

It was originally a *.diff file. As the poster says: "I would have patch
current SVN, but this is currently not working for me."

If you get it to work (either from SVN or from the source/*.diff), I'd
recommend chiming in on SF and giving your comments.

[Bug 154734] Re: No window snapping while resizing windows

2009-06-28 Thread Derek White
Going on two years and this just got triaged...wtg!

Who is working on it? Is it upstream? Can we get a link to the upstream
bug? Will it be fixed for Karmic? Will it be backported to Jaunty?

Concern: I am concerned that the snapping will not work properly with
gnome-panel. Will it snap to the panel, the screen edge, both? If both,
how will it work with a small panel size, such as 10px? I just don't
want it to be fudged like when moving a window and having it freak
out/get stuck on the screen edge when the user wants it to snap to the
panel.

[Bug 393272] [NEW] Moving a window does not work as expected.

2009-06-28 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

1] A window will not snap off the bottom screen edge without disabling
wobbly windows by holding the Shift key. In the screen-shot, I used Alt-
Mouse1 to initiate a window move near the bottom of the firefox window.
As you can see, I dragged the mouse (mouse is actually in the move icon,
but screen-shot doesn't show it) about half-way up the screen, and the
window did not budge - just some stretching from the wobbly window plug-
in.

2] A window may be moved below the bottom screen edge, but it cannot
move above the top gnome-panel (or upper screen edge, if no top panel
exists).

3] If this has to do with the resistance/attraction setting, then I
believe the default should be switched from resistance to attraction, as
it works MUCH better and more intuitively - although any selection makes
very little difference in functionality.

4] The tool-tips should be updated as they are completely useless. If
someone does not know what attraction/resistance are or how changing the
px distance will effect them, then the current tool-tips are meaningless
and make moving/snapping windows not work as the user expects.

If it affects snapping/wobbling...my upper panel is 32px and bottom
panel is 28px.

[Bug 393275] Re: Cannot take screenshot while holding down Shift and moving window.

2009-06-28 Thread Derek White
Shift-Mouse1 is a keyboard shortcut in itself. Any extra key presses
should not be treated as keyboard shortcuts in addition to any keys held
down for the one that is active.

This bug is because it thinks I am hitting Shift+PrtScrn, which is not a
shortcut - but potentially is one. So, it thinks it is one and has no
action associated with it - resulting in nothing happening.

Again, if a shortcut has already been hit, and is still active, a second
shortcut should be allowed without interfering with the first one. Hard
to explain - hope you understand.

P.S. I don't know which package handles shortcuts, so I put this under
gnome-utils.

functionality should be added.

2] When using metacity, hovering over a non-active workspace/veiwport

[Bug 393346] [NEW] Mounted CD/DVD media is shown improperly after resuming from suspend.

2009-06-28 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

1) Insert media into CD/DVD drive & let it mount.
2) Activate a suspend. (Have not tried with Hibernate.)
3) Resume the computer.
4) Check Places or Computer (file manager). You will see two (2) entries for
the mounted media. One has the default empty/non-mounted icon, the other has
the disc/mounted icon. [See attached screen-shot.]

Only the entry with the disc icon will work as expected.
Double clicking on the drive icon has no effect.
Right clicking on the disc icon entry shows "Unmount Volume".
Right clicking on the drive icon entry shows "Mount Volume" & "Eject Volume".

To return it to normal operation, select Unmount Volume on the disc icon
entry and it will unmount the volume and the disc icon entry will
disappear. Full, normal functionality is returned to the drive icon and
a subsequent Mount Volume replaces the drive icon with the disc icon, as
usual.

[Bug 29894] Re: can't take screenshot when menu on panel is opened

2009-06-28 Thread Derek White
Something interesting that I found...

One thing that does work:
Open Firefox, Hit Alt-F (To open file menu), then hit Alt-Tab.
As soon as Alt is hit, the menu closes so the following -Tab, -E, -V, etc.
still work.

I assume this is a work-around that Firefox programmed in? Why can't
that also be added in for all GTK+ programs? If a menu is open, and the
Alt key is pressed/held down, the menu exits. Sounds simple :)

[Bug 393275] Re: Cannot take screenshot while holding down Shift and moving window.

So, basically, it is impossible to hit any key[e.g. PrtScrn] while
holding down any shortcut[e.g. Shift+Mouse1]? Sounds reasonable...

[Bug 394082] [NEW] Shortcut interference in menu.

2009-06-30 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

1] Hold Alt+Mouse1|2|3|etc. (To move or resize window - not to open app menu.)
2] While moving/resizing window (with or without letting go of Alt) hit F1 (or
Alt-F1 if you let go).
3] Notice Applications menu option is highlighted but the menu does not come
down.
4] Stop moving/resizing window.
5] Hit Alt-F1.

Expect: Menu should come up.
Happens instead: Menu does not come up.

Clicking on the desktop or on the window that was moved does not fix the
menu. To use the menu shortcut again (and remove the highlight), you
have to hover the mouse over it (pulling down the menu) and click off,
or switch to a second open window, or open a new window. Normal Alt-F1
functionality is then restored.

Two shortcuts should not be able to be activated at the same time
(according to numerous 'invalid' bugs); however, for some reason this
one is allowed and causes the menu to temporarily "break".

2009-06-30 Thread Derek White
Correction: Switching to a second window does not fix it. Only clicking
on a panel, hovering over the menu, or clicking on a newly opened window
(e.g. Alt-F2 for the Run dialog and then clicking the dialog). Having
the new window grab focus is not enough, the new window must be clicked
on.

I did think of doing a re-install and performed it, but have not had a

updates to do and I am on a metered Internet plan, so no nilly-willy
installing for me! I will post back if I notice it anymore.

My refresh rate is obviously not 1500+Hz, it's the default for my DVI monitor,
60Hz.

Reproducibility? Not sure how I reproduced it, just did it a bunch and
the warning comes up occasionally.

Good luck with this one,
-Derek

PS - Second bug(?) - Firefox seems to think 'framerate' is not a correct
word... :)

This is after a re-install of audacity...you're not going to like it...

$ gedit /usr/share/mime/packages/audacity.xml

And vim thought it was a new file...

So, I assume the error will still be there when I do have an update to
perform...
Not sure what else I can do to help you. It may be a hdd problem. I will
do some disk maintenance over-night and try it again in the morning.
Will post back.

2009-07-02 Thread Derek White
Worked perfectly fine under metacity.
Startup Applications command:
sh -c "sleep 20 && /home/derek/.bin/startup.sh"

Is this a problem with conky loading prior to compiz taking over
control? And, when it does take control, it adds the border shadow &
does not put it back how it should go.

[Bug 394987] [NEW] Pidgin shows incorrect AIM & ICQ server error messages.

2009-07-02 Thread Derek White
Private bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

This has happened for as long as I've been using pidgin.
Using pidgin-developers PPA version of 2.5.8. (It's not my fault they don't
update the Help > Report a problem link!)

Haven't connected to AIM or ICQ for over 18 hours and I receive the "You
have been connecting and disconnecting too frequently. Wait ten minutes
and try again. If you continue to try, you will need to wait even
longer." for both services. Using tor proxy. If I keep hitting re-
enable, after 3-10 times it finally connects; so, I am obviously not
getting the correct error message.

[Bug 394990] [NEW] Ekiga's window placement is not preserved after docking to notification area.

2009-07-02 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ekiga

1) Open ekiga
2) Close ekiga window (Ctrl+W or the X)
3) Show ekiga window

Expect window to come back where it left (snapped against my top panel).

What happens instead is that it is restored about 20-25 pixels lower &
~1-3 pixels to the right.

This happens every time the window is brought back up. Eventually ekiga
is stuck at the bottom of the screen. Once it hits the bottom, it
continues to move to the right slowly. Eventually it is in the bottom
right corner.

It never goes below the top of my bottom panel, nor does it ever go off
the right side of the screen. The entire window is always still visible.

[Bug 327932] Re: News&Blogs Preview Pane - bgcolor & font color clash

2009-04-22 Thread Derek White
Assigned to nobody!

IMO it should be assigned to whoever left it out in the first place!
Even if they don't program anymore. :)

Seriously though, one little background/text combo got left behind and
no one is stepping up to fix it? Does everything with evolution need
upstreamed? Has this been upstreamed?

Is it fixed in 9.04 for final release?

[Bug 293395] [NEW] Graphical artifacts present when resuming from sleep.

2008-11-03 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

No idea what is causing the problem, but when I resume from sleep
(gnome-power-preferences calls it sleep, but the power icon calls it
suspend...wtf???) ['S1&S3' selected in BIOS, computer completely off,
keyboard/mouse will not wake, have to use power button to resume - not
hibernation, hibernation is disabled, computer comes right up to locked
screen, no booting...no idea what to call this type] the upper & lower
gnome menus have artifacts around them, as well as any pop-up menus
(i.e. Applications, Places, right click on desktop/firefox/anywhere).
See attached picture.

Ubuntu 8.10 i386-generic
Default graphics drivers for ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350)
   xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.9.0+git20082003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2
   $ lsmod | grep radeon
  radeon147616 2
  drm86056 3 radeon

   compizconfig-backend-gconf -- 0.7.8-0ubuntu1
   compiz-fusion-plugins-extra/compiz-fusion-plugins-main/libcompizconfig0 --

   $ pgrep comp
  16462 compiz
  16528 compiz.real
  16538 compiz-decorato
$ cat xorg.conf
$ [AKA: file exists, but is empty]

Artifacts can be removed immediately by logging out & back in.
Also can be removed by using the gnome menus (i.e. Applications/Places/System)
over and over. (While writing this they disappeared.)

Not high priority, but very ugly and messy. Kinda seems like the
shadowing is all artifact-ed out.

Notes on the picture: The menu is usually visible on the top, the weird
static is a common ati gfx problem that occurred when I snapped the
picture. The problem I am reporting is the messed up border seen around
the bottom bar and around the top bar. I can get better picture if
needed, including the right-click menu and other menus.

[Bug 279806] Re: Gnome-System-Log window uses 100% cpu upon 'gksu moblock-control restart' with moblock.log in viewer.

2008-10-21 Thread Derek White
I apologize, I thought I closed this one out.

Turns out it was a performance issue. When 'moblock-control restart' is
run, it spits out a bunch of (in my mind) useless info to the log. This
sudden influx of data, caused the log viewer to "freeze" while it loads
the text into memory for viewing. I just didn't give it enough
time...chalk this one up to old hardware.

[Bug 279774] Re: Firefox does not restore previous sessions' tabs when loading a URL from an application.

2008-10-14 Thread Derek White
I have done some more testing:

Opened firefox to my homepage.
I disabled Tor, restarted with the restart button that came up in the extension
window.
Tested restore, didn't work: just came up to a single blank page, no tabs.
I opened a URL in a second tab (first was still blank).
I opened add-ons and disabled Ad-Block, restarted as it told me to.
It asked if I wanted to save my tabs, I said yes and it restarted.
My blank page & the second tab were restored perfectly.
Closed firefox.
Started firefox.
Went somewhere.
Opened a new tab & went somewhere else.
Closed firefox, selected save & quit.
Opened firefox.
I get a blank screen, nothing restored.

So, it seems that only when I save/restore from the restart button after
disabling an extension, will it save.

Under "Clear Private Data" I have browsing, download, saved form and
search histories checked, as well as cache, offline website data, and
authenticated sessions. It is set to clear all this when firefox closes.

I am at a total loss as to why this is happening.
Why does it ONLY save/restore successfully when I restart after disabling an
extension?
Are saved tabs considered authenticated sessions?

** Summary changed:

- Firefox does not restore previous sessions' tabs when loading a URL from an
application.
+ Firefox only restores previous session/tabs when restarting after disabling
an extension.

** Description changed:

  & quit.

Clicked on a URL in an application (happened to be mobloquer).

URL loads, old tabs are never restored.
Reloading firefox does not load tabs either...tabs aren't even shown in the
history.

Torbutton does NOTHING to non-tor pages, which the saved tabs were.
+
Tabs are saved and load just fine under ideal circumstances (i.e. close,

[Bug 279774] Re: Firefox only restores previous session/tabs when restarting after disabling an extension.

2008-10-14 Thread Derek White
Great, at least I know I'm not going crazy!

Now, this creates two problems:

1) My problem of losing saved tabs.

2) Firefox apparently does not clear private data when it restarts after
disabling an extension.
a) This could be by design. AKA: a RESTART is not considered to be part of
"when I close Firefox"?

Kenneth: Your fix would seem logical to me; hell, it's how I figured it
did it all along. I really didn't think the devs would make two features
that conflict like that without warning me.

So...where to go from here?

Bug?
or
Request a feature addition?

P.S. - Is this still a duplicate with the changes I made to it?

** Summary changed:

- Firefox only restores previous session/tabs when restarting after disabling
an extension.
+ Firefox only restores previous session/tabs when restarting after disabling
an extension, if Browsing History is cleared at close.

[Bug 291901] [NEW] Fullscreen mode ignores customized toolbar settings.

2008-10-31 Thread Derek White
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Before anyone screams duplicate, #148593
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/148593) is a subset of this bug; and,
the developers should have looked more closely, because that wasn't
really the problem. The problem is that NO customizations are carried
over to full screen mode, not just the singular case of 'no toolbar'.

1) Customize toolbar icons.
1.5) Optionally, restart evince. (Made no difference.)
2) Enter full screen mode.

What I expect:
   My customized toolbar is retained.

What happens instead:
   Default toolbar is displayed.

Thoughts:
Maybe the full screen toolbar is static/hard-coded? (Hope not.)
Maybe it just 'forgets' to check for customized toolbar settings?

Quite unintuitive either way.
