[Bug 239082] Re: (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd

2008-12-04 Thread davide
Teej, you are right, this is not a bug, as I wrote in the first line of
my report.

But, besides the unconstructiveness of the conversation (please don't blame me
for that), this is a serious aspect of usability, and it depends on bug#1 only
for b43-fwcutter.
IMHO ndiswrapper must be included in the CDROM, because it is obvious that on
certain hardware you cannot get network connectivity without it (and without
network connectivity you cannot download it as well).

[Bug 381896] [NEW] bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension

2009-05-30 Thread Davide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source

After enabling IPV6 privacy extension (with echo 2 >
/proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/eth8/use_tempaddr)
ubuntu autoconfigs, as aspected, ipv6-privacy-extension-addresses and they
change every 60 seconds makeing outgoing connection droped every 60 seconds
(radvd running on 6to4 prefix with AdvPreferredLifetime 20 and
AdvValidLifetime 30).
After changing AdvValidLifetime to 300 in radvd (on the router) ubuntu starts
getting assigned more and more addresses up to about 15.
Changing AdvValidLifetime back to 30 lead ubuntu to deconfigure ALL
ipv6-privacy-extension-addresses addresses leaving the interface with only the
stateless address but interface is still configured to use privacy extension
but it's no longer used. So privacy is no longer ensured without any user
command but just some crafted ra packets.

[Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade

2009-04-29 Thread davide
Same behavior for the current update, 3.0.10+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1
I changed the title, to make it clearer.
Let me restate what happens.

I have firefox open, with many tabs.
My firefox settings are such that it always asks me to save the tabs and to
clear private data on shutdown.
The update manager finds a new version of firefox and proposes to download it.

If I close firefox and only after that I agree with the update, it works
as expected (namely: it ask for saving the tabs, for clear private data
and after the update it re-creates the tabs).

If I agree with the download keeping firefox open, the following bugous
behavior occur.
Sooner or later the "old" firefox should be closed. At this time it does NOT
ask to save the tabs NEITHER to clear private data.
Later, when the "new" firefox is open, the first thing that appears is the
dialog asking to clear private data. Note that the browser is not visible yet!
When the user close the dialog the browser comes, without the tabs previous
open, which are lost.

After this "one time" bug, everything work correctly again. As I already
wrote, this is an ubuntu-specific bug. It does not happen in the
"original" firefox, probably because the update procedure is completely
different.

If this bug cannot be fixed, I strongly recommend that a notification
will be added, warning users to NOT install a firefox update while
firefox itself is running (even for other users, I also tried that),
otherwise the open tabs will be lost.

Thanks

[Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade

2009-04-23 Thread davide
The event occurred again with the 3.0.9 update. I suspect that during the
update something happens and prevents the old instance to close properly.
Indeed also the "Clear Private Data" dialog does not appear. Note that I took
the time to download, install and test the update on the original firefox
binary provided by mozilla.com
It works flawlessy, the problem is probably due to the change in the update
strategy made by ubuntu.

[Bug 218565] Re: Emesene hangs on login when behind a proxy server

2008-11-01 Thread Davide
Hi Gianfranco. I managed a network like yours with a transparent http proxy and
a firewall which allow only connection to 443 port and redirect all web
connections through the squid proxy.
To workaround the Emessene Bug simple go to Options -> Preference -> Connection
and tick Use HTTP method. You should now be able to connect fine.
Intrepid version is affected by this bug too.

[Bug 274893] [NEW] Something is broken in the help

2008-09-26 Thread davide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: jedit

In jedit 4.3~pre13.dfsg-0ubuntu2 on Ubuntu 8.04.1 the help is very incomplete.
All the important sections are missing, just few trivial ones are included.
Moreover, among the ones included, the license gives a FileNotFound when
clicked.

On a previous system I installed jedit4.3pre13 from jedit.org tarball
and it worked fine, so I think there is something missing in the ubuntu
package.

[Bug 310652] [NEW] Sessions not correctly restored when switching monitor

2008-12-22 Thread davide
Public bug reported:

One of the most useful options in GNOME, is the possibility to have the
system restore the running applications after a reboot (System ->
Preferences -> Sessions -> Session Options)

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
I don't know.

3) What you expected to happen
You would expect that if you turn the laptop off, with certain applications in
certain workspaces, when you will turn the laptop on, you will find them where
you left them. This works correctly, but only if you use the same screen you
used at the shut-down.
Well, changing monitor is uncommon for destops, but is everyday activity for
people with a laptop and docking stations.

4) What happened instead
If you change monitor (or docking station, e.g. from work to home) or use the
laptop screen, the session is restored with applications on the wrong
workspace.

I think this is due to the fact that the save/restore process is done
with absolute (i.e. pixel count) positioning in a single workspace
created merging the set of workspaces the user is using. A best approach
would be to save/restore the workspace number and the relative (i.e. %
of the screen width/height) instead of just plain pixel count.

[Bug 310670] [NEW] Download notifier hides workspace switcher

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename'
or by checking in Synaptic.
firefox:

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages

3) What you expected to happen
See below

4) What happened instead
The download notifier (beware: not the download window!) appear after a
download is completed. It appears in the right-bottom corner of the screen,
right where the workspace switcher is (hiding it for few annoying seconds,
exactly when one wants to switch workspace to use the downloaded file). There
isn't any obvious way of disabling this (unlike the download window).

3) What you expected to happen
Either a way of disabling this notification, or putting it few pixel above,
like the Thunderbird notifications which do not hide the panel.

[Bug 307598] [NEW] Unable to connect to an ipv6-only wifi network

2008-12-12 Thread Davide
Public bug reported:

When you try to connect to an ipv6-only wifi-network the network-manager wait
for the dhcpv4 address for some time (while it has already got the ipv6 addres
from radvd and has working ipv6 connectivity) and then turn off the wifi-link
so ipv6 connectivity can't longer work.
A workaround is to set a link-local ipv4 address in the wifi option or a fake
ipv4 address.

There is a workaround. The following worked for me (I needed a loop

did).
Of course we all hope that it will work out of the box, one day, but
in the meanwhile, try your own fix.

dd if=/dev/urandom of=.aes.img bs=512k count=256
chmod o-rwx .aes.img

sudo losetup /dev/loop0 .aes.img
sudo modprobe dm-crypt
sudo cryptsetup --verbose --verify-passphrase luksFormat /dev/loop0
sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/loop0 aes
ls -l /dev/mapper/
sudo mkfs.ext3 -j -m 1 /dev/mapper/aes

[Bug 239082] [NEW] (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd

2008-06-10 Thread davide
Public bug reported:

Well, this actually is not a "real" bug, it is just a design flaw.

When you are installing from a media (namely the dvd, but I guess that would be
worst for the cdrom) you should get from there everything you need to
"start-up". Unfortunately this was not the case for a good 2 among the 3
computers (home, work and wife) on where I installed Ubuntu. For both, the
wireless network was not working and it was really a pain to find workarounds
to make it available. The sad thing is that the packages to make the network
works are available and well-working, but only for download, not on the media!!
How are you supposed to download something from the network, if the network
itself is not working? I guess in the mind of who made this choice, wireless is
the "secondary" network, whereas wired is the primary, but this was not the
case for me. These packages MUST be included in the dvd AND cdrom for the
future releases, IMHO (there is not space problem for the DVD which is not
overflowing)

The first laptop needed b43-fwcutter. Here the problem is the license
which does not allow the distribution. Canonical should lobby to change
their mind.

The second computer needed ndiswrapper. Here there is not any license
problem (and the packages are actually three, not one).

Thanks

[Bug 239082] Re: (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd

2008-06-11 Thread davide
Folks,
you are just chatting, which wasn't the purpose of my bug-report.
I agree with everything (on this OT I'd suggest is to put your money where your
mouth is, and become member of FSF and buy some gear from Ubuntu, if you did
not do that already - I plan to do that next week).

But this is a BUG REPORT, not a forum discussion.
The bug is: the two mentioned packages (namely b43-fwcutter and ndiswrapper,
the latter having dependences on other two ones) should be available on the
media disks, at least on the DVD where there is enough space available for them.

The bug number 1 is related with the EXISTENCE of b43-fwcutter and
ndiswrapper, not with the choice to have them available only for
download and not on the media. The choice to have them available only
for download is a result of a flawed license for the former, but it was
just a (wrong) choice for the latter. I hope that at least this one will
be fixed.

Regards,
;Davide

2009-03-24 Thread Davide
I think that the partitioned programm of cd live of ubuntu don't make the
same of gparted or partition magic whit the fat 32 or vfat partition
I resolved the problem whit gparted:
1 download gparted the stable version
2 create the partition free (or not formatted) whit gparted
3 insert the ubuntu 8.10 live and click "use the free space continuous
available" (I not remember bat is a similar form)

[Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade

2009-04-01 Thread davide
John,
I understand that you might have to deal with dumb users who open non-existent
bugs related with their setting. I know firefox settings very well. This is
*not* a setting in firefox. This is a real bug which occur as I described.
I also understand that it might be hard to reproduce, because it occur *only*
during the update process, but this is not a good reason to close it.

** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Invalid => New

[Bug 357265] Re: the mouse pointer is invisible! but with the mobo integrated card is visible...

2009-04-09 Thread Davide
I found that my motherboard is somehow incompatibile with my videocard,
unable to wake up from s3 state and many other problems. Asus said maybe
it's my via chipset defective. So I changed my motherboard and now
everything is ok with my videocard. Mouse pointer is visible everything
working. Also my old motherboard is running 9.04 fine with integrated
video card.

[Bug 359594] [NEW] System hangs for a while when changing background image

2009-04-11 Thread Davide
Public bug reported:

When I change the background image from "gnome-appearance-properties",
the animation of transition from an image to another is very slow (with
and without desktop effects). Running the command "top" I see Xorg
process using about 99,7% of CPU. The system hangs until the image is
fully loaded and the animation has finished.

I haven't this problem with my notebook (Acer Ferrari 4005 WLMi: AMD
Turion 64 ML-37 / 2GB RAM / ATi Radeon X700 PRO 128MB) and the same
distribution and updates (Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit beta).

[Bug 351759] [NEW] save your tabs don't work after an upgrade

2009-03-30 Thread davide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

This is firefox 3.0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2 in Ubuntu 8.04.2.

I had my browser open with many tabs. It was still firefox 3.0.7
The update to 3.0.8 was published and I agreed to download and istall it (while
I was doing my business with the 3.0.7)
The "browser restart required message" appeared, thus I closed the browser
(there were still many open tabs). The message "Do you want Firefox to save
your tabs for the next time it starts?" didn't appear, and after the restart
the tabs were gone.

Note that:

a) if I close the browser now that the update process is complete, the
message appear and if I answer yes, the tabs are correctly saved for the
next session, thus is sort of "one time bug"

b) it is not exactly "one time" because it has occurred ALWAYS when
updating firefox (I have always firefox open with many tabs and I always
want them to be saved, so I encountered it already)

It might not seem a big deal, but sometimes it is, thus I recommend to
fix it. If you cannot fix it, you should at least add a dialog in the
update windows, stating that the current tabs will be gone, and warning
the user to save URLs and "back button status" if needed.

Thanks

Re: [Bug 351253] Re: Firefox (update) lost my open tabs

2009-08-05 Thread davide
As I already wrote in the duplicate, I've proved that is
ubuntu-specific (or maybe debian-specific too?). In fact:

a) the upate process for the original firefox is different

b) installing (in ubuntu) the original firefox, then updating with
open tabs, and then closing and finally reopening it does work as
expected (see the duplicate bug for further details)

I think the "losing tabs when download window is open" is a different
bug, might be present on the original firefox, and should require a
different bug.

[Bug 416818] Re: Change the way Arora recommends installing extra multimedia packages

2009-08-22 Thread Davide
I also add that arora should allow to disable notification (if someone won't to
install all that packages). At the moment I'm running on x64 and I haven't
installed flashplugin using the repo's script as it install the 32bit version
of the plugin with a wrapper (also flex developer may need to manually install
the debug version so again without the repo's script; so even if a flash-player
plugin is installed and working arora keep asking for installing one.
We should also think about alteratives ? gnash ? openjdk (don't know if it has
a browser plugin) ?

[Bug 381896] Re: bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension

2009-08-22 Thread Davide
I've just installed karmic (kubuntu) here the situation is even worst...
I wasn't sure if open a new bug as it's not only related with ipv6-privacy
extension
Now you just need to run radvd with the following configuration:
interface br0 {
AdvSendAdvert on;
MinRtrAdvInterval 200;
MaxRtrAdvInterval 600;
prefix 2001:::::/64 {
AdvOnLink off;
AdvAutonomous on;
AdvRouterAddr on;
AdvPreferredLifetime 20;
AdvValidLifetime 30;
};
};
and you will get your ipv6 address and (if you enabled privacy extension) the
privacy one. after a while all configured address just disappear not just the
privacy one as said in the first post but all (only linklocal address remains)
!!
I think that now it's something more than medium as in a network like that ipv6
is just unusable.

[Bug 3406] Re: ksynaptics not working in dapper/breezy

2006-08-07 Thread davide
hello,
the problem here can be fixed under ubuntu and xubuntu by changing driver from
xorg to xfree86, but kubuntu fails to work if you install xfree86 synaptics
driver. i wrote to the husband of my sister, who wrote the xorg synaptics
driver so, maybe he can come up with a solution. If you install the xfree86
driver, the package manager will disinstall the kubuntu-desktop package. My
laptop works fine also without the kubuntu manager, except if you try to log

[Bug 138300] [gusty] unable to dim lcd display to maximum level with fn keys

2007-09-08 Thread Davide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

On Gusty display dimming doesn't work correctly on my asus V6V.

When I press fn+f5 (dimm-down) once, while the display is at it's brightest
state , the display dimms automatically to a very low brightness.
If I try to increse it with fn+f5 (dimm-up) it increse of 1 level and after
half a second it fall down again to the lowest brightness, so it's impossible
to set again the brightest state with the keyboard.
(using the brightness applet I don't have this problem and I can set any level
of brightness)

Killing gnome-power-manager solve this problem.

[Bug 160609] update-manager fails after update

2007-11-06 Thread davide
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

hi everyone, hope this is not a duplicate bug.
running gutsy-i386. message shown after update from update-manager on 6th nov
2007 (about cups, 11 Mb). in italian:

'E:Problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Errore nell'analisi di gdm
(NewVersion1), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:La lista
dei pacchetti o il file di status non possono essere letti o aperti.'

in english (maybe correct):

'E:Problem parsing dependency Depends, E:Error on gdm analysis
(NewVersion1), E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:List of
packages or status files can't be read or opened.'

i can't also use apt by terminal, can't open synaptic, can't use aptitude or
the "add/remove" tool, i get always a crash with similar error. i get the same
error even after a restart.
thank you for your attention!

i substituted /var/lib/dpkg/status with a renamed copy of

thank you arnaud! as i wrote in my reported (and duplicated, sigh!) bug,
i substituted /var/lib/dpkg/status wrongly modified by update-manager

[Bug 111681] Re: update-manager - Problem parsing dependency Pre-Depends

2007-11-07 Thread davide
i don't think it's related specially to "gdm" package line in
/var/lib/dpkg/status. look

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+question/10208

i think it's related to /var/lib/dpkg/status corruption, obviously
during file overwriting.

Seems it worked: i've installed a new app.
But i can't try to update the system because "update manager" says that i've
done it fewer than an hour ago.
I'll try as soon as possible

Thank you.
Fast and great service.

[Bug 1931494] [NEW] Wrong scaling

2021-06-09 Thread Davide
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04
Evince 3.36.10

If I set the scale to 100% the document on display is twice the real size.
To see the document at the correct size I have to set the scale to 50%.
Evince 3.36.7 does not have this bug.

** Affects: evince (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2018-07-03 Thread Davide
Hi everybody,

I just wanted to say that I agree with the many asking for the moving of
the "snap" folder. Although it is clearly not a life threatening issue
:) I strongly believe that the visible content of $HOME should be in
total control of the user for a variety of reasons, not excluding
personal taste. I also think comment #73 above is a realistic reply to
the only argument in favor of having ~/snap visible.
