[Bug 239082] Re: (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd
Teej, you are right, this is not a bug, as I wrote in the first line of my report. But, besides the unconstructiveness of the conversation (please don't blame me for that), this is a serious aspect of usability, and it depends on bug#1 only for b43-fwcutter. IMHO ndiswrapper must be included in the CDROM, because it is obvious that on certain hardware you cannot get network connectivity without it (and without network connectivity you cannot download it as well). -- (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239082 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 381896] [NEW] bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source After enabling IPV6 privacy extension (with echo 2 > /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/eth8/use_tempaddr) ubuntu autoconfigs, as aspected, ipv6-privacy-extension-addresses and they change every 60 seconds makeing outgoing connection droped every 60 seconds (radvd running on 6to4 prefix with AdvPreferredLifetime 20 and AdvValidLifetime 30). After changing AdvValidLifetime to 300 in radvd (on the router) ubuntu starts getting assigned more and more addresses up to about 15. Changing AdvValidLifetime back to 30 lead ubuntu to deconfigure ALL ipv6-privacy-extension-addresses addresses leaving the interface with only the stateless address but interface is still configured to use privacy extension but it's no longer used. So privacy is no longer ensured without any user command but just some crafted ra packets. ** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: ipv6 -- bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381896 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade
Same behavior for the current update, 3.0.10+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 I changed the title, to make it clearer. Let me restate what happens. I have firefox open, with many tabs. My firefox settings are such that it always asks me to save the tabs and to clear private data on shutdown. The update manager finds a new version of firefox and proposes to download it. If I close firefox and only after that I agree with the update, it works as expected (namely: it ask for saving the tabs, for clear private data and after the update it re-creates the tabs). If I agree with the download keeping firefox open, the following bugous behavior occur. Sooner or later the "old" firefox should be closed. At this time it does NOT ask to save the tabs NEITHER to clear private data. Later, when the "new" firefox is open, the first thing that appears is the dialog asking to clear private data. Note that the browser is not visible yet! When the user close the dialog the browser comes, without the tabs previous open, which are lost. After this "one time" bug, everything work correctly again. As I already wrote, this is an ubuntu-specific bug. It does not happen in the "original" firefox, probably because the update procedure is completely different. If this bug cannot be fixed, I strongly recommend that a notification will be added, warning users to NOT install a firefox update while firefox itself is running (even for other users, I also tried that), otherwise the open tabs will be lost. [Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade
The event occurred again with the 3.0.9 update. I suspect that during the update something happens and prevents the old instance to close properly. Indeed also the "Clear Private Data" dialog does not appear. Note that I took the time to download, install and test the update on the original firefox binary provided by mozilla.com It works flawlessy, the problem is probably due to the change in the update strategy made by ubuntu. ** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- save your tabs don't work after an upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351759 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 310652] [NEW] Sessions not correctly restored when switching monitor
Public bug reported: One of the most useful options in GNOME, is the possibility to have the system restore the running applications after a reboot (System -> Preferences -> Sessions -> Session Options) 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu. Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic. I don't know. 3) What you expected to happen You would expect that if you turn the laptop off, with certain applications in certain workspaces, when you will turn the laptop on, you will find them where you left them. This works correctly, but only if you use the same screen you used at the shut-down. Well, changing monitor is uncommon for destops, but is everyday activity for people with a laptop and docking stations. 4) What happened instead If you change monitor (or docking station, e.g. from work to home) or use the laptop screen, the session is restored with applications on the wrong workspace. I think this is due to the fact that the save/restore process is done with absolute (i.e. pixel count) positioning in a single workspace created merging the set of workspaces the user is using. A best approach would be to save/restore the workspace number and the relative (i.e. % of the screen width/height) instead of just plain pixel count. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sessions not correctly restored when switching monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/310652 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It appears in the right-bottom corner of the screen, right where the workspace switcher is (hiding it for few annoying seconds, exactly when one wants to switch workspace to use the downloaded file). [Bug 239082] [NEW] (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd
Public bug reported: Well, this actually is not a "real" bug, it is just a design flaw. When you are installing from a media (namely the dvd, but I guess that would be worst for the cdrom) you should get from there everything you need to "start-up". Unfortunately this was not the case for a good 2 among the 3 computers (home, work and wife) on where I installed Ubuntu. For both, the wireless network was not working and it was really a pain to find workarounds to make it available. The sad thing is that the packages to make the network works are available and well-working, but only for download, not on the media!! How are you supposed to download something from the network, if the network itself is not working? I guess in the mind of who made this choice, wireless is the "secondary" network, whereas wired is the primary, but this was not the case for me. These packages MUST be included in the dvd AND cdrom for the future releases, IMHO (there is not space problem for the DVD which is not overflowing) The first laptop needed b43-fwcutter. Here the problem is the license which does not allow the distribution. Canonical should lobby to change their mind. The second computer needed ndiswrapper. Here there is not any license problem (and the packages are actually three, not one). [Bug 239082] Re: (wireless) network driver missing from the dvd
Folks, you are just chatting, which wasn't the purpose of my bug-report. I agree with everything (on this OT I'd suggest is to put your money where your mouth is, and become member of FSF and buy some gear from Ubuntu, if you did not do that already - I plan to do that next week). But this is a BUG REPORT, not a forum discussion. The bug is: the two mentioned packages (namely b43-fwcutter and ndiswrapper, the latter having dependences on other two ones) should be available on the media disks, at least on the DVD where there is enough space available for them. The bug number 1 is related with the EXISTENCE of b43-fwcutter and ndiswrapper, not with the choice to have them available only for download and not on the media. The choice to have them available only for download is a result of a flawed license for the former, but it was just a (wrong) choice for the latter. I hope that at least this one will be fixed. [Bug 351759] Re: save your tabs don't work after an upgrade
John, I understand that you might have to deal with dumb users who open non-existent bugs related with their setting. I know firefox settings very well. This is *not* a setting in firefox. This is a real bug which occur as I described. I also understand that it might be hard to reproduce, because it occur *only* during the update process, but this is not a good reason to close it. ** Changed in: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) Status: Invalid => New -- save your tabs don't work after an upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351759 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 351759] [NEW] save your tabs don't work after an upgrade
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox This is firefox 3.0.8+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.2 in Ubuntu 8.04.2. I had my browser open with many tabs. It was still firefox 3.0.7 The update to 3.0.8 was published and I agreed to download and istall it (while I was doing my business with the 3.0.7) The "browser restart required message" appeared, thus I closed the browser (there were still many open tabs). The message "Do you want Firefox to save your tabs for the next time it starts?" didn't appear, and after the restart the tabs were gone. Note that: a) if I close the browser now that the update process is complete, the message appear and if I answer yes, the tabs are correctly saved for the next session, thus is sort of "one time bug" b) it is not exactly "one time" because it has occurred ALWAYS when updating firefox (I have always firefox open with many tabs and I always want them to be saved, so I encountered it already) It might not seem a big deal, but sometimes it is, thus I recommend to fix it. If you cannot fix it, you should at least add a dialog in the update windows, stating that the current tabs will be gone, and warning the user to save URLs and "back button status" if needed. Re: [Bug 351253] Re: Firefox (update) lost my open tabs
As I already wrote in the duplicate, I've proved that is ubuntu-specific (or maybe debian-specific too?). In fact: a) the upate process for the original firefox is different b) installing (in ubuntu) the original firefox, then updating with open tabs, and then closing and finally reopening it does work as expected (see the duplicate bug for further details) I think the "losing tabs when download window is open" is a different bug, might be present on the original firefox, and should require a different bug. [Bug 381896] Re: bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension
I've just installed karmic (kubuntu) here the situation is even worst... I wasn't sure if open a new bug as it's not only related with ipv6-privacy extension Now you just need to run radvd with the following configuration: interface br0 { AdvSendAdvert on; MinRtrAdvInterval 200; MaxRtrAdvInterval 600; prefix 2001:::::/64 { AdvOnLink off; AdvAutonomous on; AdvRouterAddr on; AdvPreferredLifetime 20; AdvValidLifetime 30; }; }; and you will get your ipv6 address and (if you enabled privacy extension) the privacy one. after a while all configured address just disappear not just the privacy one as said in the first post but all (only linklocal address remains) !! I think that now it's something more than medium as in a network like that ipv6 is just unusable. -- bad router advertisement lead to disabilitation of ipv6 privacy extension https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/381896 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location
Hi everybody, I just wanted to say that I agree with the many asking for the moving of the "snap" folder. Although it is clearly not a life threatening issue :) I strongly believe that the visible content of $HOME should be in total control of the user for a variety of reasons, not excluding personal taste. I also think comment #73 above is a realistic reply to the only argument in favor of having ~/snap visible. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575053 Title: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/snapd/+bug/1575053/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
