[Bug 38131] Re: Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage

2009-03-28 Thread Conan
The gnome-settings-daemon problem is not the main issue at stake here as
it doesn't fix the problem for me.

The main problem here is not one that only affects older computers. When
searching for something which returns a lot of results on launchpad
(like, ironically, "Xorg CPU") my firefox slows down to an unusable
state and Xorg uses 100% of one processor core. This is on a 3.86 GHz
core 2 quad with 4GiB of DDR2 942! If that system can't run a single tab
in firefox then there is a SERIOUS bug here!

There is a possibility that this is made worse by my peculiar X setup,
using two Nvidia GPUs with the proprietary driver with four monitors and
Xinerama.

(running up to date jaunty beta)

[Bug 58977] Re: Maximizing ignores docked panles with Xinerama

2009-04-01 Thread Conan
Recent testing with all current updates suggests that for horizontal panels
(that is ones at the top or bottom of a monitor) this bug only now occurs if
the panel was put there since logon time.
Luckily this means that there is now at least a workaround for this bug (create
and position all your panels, log off, log on, run other applications)

[Bug 353098] [NEW] Cursor behaves oddly during logon (using Xinerama)

2009-04-01 Thread Conan
Public bug reported:

During the logon (while the cursor is showing the spinning round graphic) the
cursor behaves very oddly.
Instead of moving between screens it wraps around on the main monitor but
restricts itself to the resolution of the monitor it should be on.
Clicking and such while this is happening effects applications on whichever
monitor it should be on.

Strangest of all the cursor never effects the main monitor, skipping
straight from the first to the left of it to the first to the right of
it.

This is using Jaunty beta with all current updates.

xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and lspci -vvnn output are attached.

[Bug 353801] [NEW] Amarok is inconsistent in its treatment of the word "the"

2009-04-02 Thread Conan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

At the moment amarok ignores the prefix "The" on artist names when sorting the
music collection but when adding to the playlist all artists beginning with
"The" are grouped together.
In the short term amarok should be consistent with itself about its treatment
of the word "The" and either always ignore it, at least for the same tag (eg.
for artists it's ignored but for albums it's not).
In the longer term it would be brilliant to see an option for ignoring "The",
possibly customisable for which situations this should be done in.

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty (development branch) 9.04 with amarok version
2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu2

[Bug 358321] [NEW] some scripts in irssi-scripts are out of date

10:26:20 | o nicklist  A new version is available (0.4.5->0.4.6)

[Bug 243453] Re: Please Upgrade Mplayer

2009-04-04 Thread Conan
What's the reasoning behind not updating mplayer?
MPlayer 1.0rc2 may be the most recent actual release but the following page
states that is isn't supported because it's outdated...
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html
Surely ubuntu should be using supported versions of the software in the repos
if one is available.

If the workaround is to make amarok not use pulseaudio in kubuntu this
is hardly a fix for gnome users who are using pulseaudio. Surely we need
to patch whatever this "abysmal behaviour" in pulseaudio is instead.

So (as we said earlier...) the problem lies when phonon is using pulseaudio as

Can we confirm whether this is a bug in pulseaudio itself or in phonon's use of

[Bug 1595326] [NEW] Touchpad stops working shortly after booting

2016-06-22 Thread Conan
Public bug reported:

I cannot get any distribution of Ubuntu to play with the touchpad on
Asus UX501VW (dual boot with pre-installed windows, fast boot switched
off in UEFI Bios). The touchpad freezes almost immediately when booting
Ubuntu 14.04, 15.10 and 16.04 from disk. After install, the problem
remains.

I have tested Kernels 3.2.0, 3.3.0, 3.3.5, 3.4.0, 3.5.0 and 3.5.2 and
the problem remains in all cases.

I have tried setting TouchpadOff=0 in synclient options to no avail. I
have tried playing with gnome settings with no luck.

The current set-up I'm reporting from is Ubuntu 14.04,
4.3.5-040305-generic. I'm installing on ASUS UX501VW with an Elantech
touchpad.

In dmesg I find the following lines which may be relevant:

[Bug 664082] Re: Motion complains about not being able to create pid file on computer start up. Runs just fine in daemon mode with manual start.

2010-11-02 Thread Conan
This is obviously because the /var/run directory is mounted with tmpfs
so on reboot the /var/run/motion directory is deleted.

The init script will have to check this directory exists and create it
with owner and group "motion" before dropping privs to run the daemon.

[Bug 349314] Re: Slow performance and tiling issues on i915

2009-07-15 Thread Conan Barnes
Another confirmation that 14-generic resolves the issue on my eee 900.

@DrewTardif: No need to download and install a patch. The fix is in
the 14 kernel that's available from the proposed archive. Simply enable
the proposed archive in your software sources, then utilize the familiar
apt-get instruction to retrieve and install 14 and you should be good to
go. For a step-by-step script of how to do this, look about 6 posts up
and Tommy Trussell has outlined it perfectly.

[Bug 1816846] Re: segfault in libc-2.23.so netinstall installation pxe

2019-03-21 Thread HC Conan
Confirming the same issue as Nathaniel and Derek after using the updated
both initrd.gz and linux files from
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/xenial-updates/main/installer-
amd64/current/images/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/.

How to force it to use the 4.4.0.142 image in PXE boot?
I am new to PXE. Where should I add "d-i base-installer/kernel/image string
linux-image-4.4.0-142-generic"? My .cfg file does not conatin anything like
"d-i".
Any info is appreciated.

The proposed fix in #10 does not work for me either.
See the attached error.
