[Bug 566651] Re: Thunderbird crashed during normal operations (segmentation fault)

2010-04-19 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Thank you for the hint. I tried "apport-collect 566651", but the command-line
ended with

>> IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied:
'/home/cece/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials' <<

It seems that I have no rights to read some file in the cache of my home
directory ("cece" is my login name).

[Bug 572125] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic HPLIP + LaserJet P1005 = "out of paper" error

2010-04-30 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 9.10 + HPLIP 3.9.12 (Device Man. ver. 15.0 Qt4) + HP
LaserJet P1005

The printer works fine as long as there is paper in. When the paper bin
is empty, HPLIP interface claims for "Device communication error". When
I put some new paper in, the printer won't come back printing and HPLIP
still claims for the communication error.

I'm not able to find any interface action to resume printing after
having filled the paper in. The printing queue simply claims for "paper
missing" and there is no interface action to backup from this situation.
Then I need to delete the printing process from the queue, turn the
printer off and on again, and start printing the original document from
the missing page on.

The only way to prevent this to happen is to load more paper to the
printer BEFORE it complete the jobs ... but this rather unfair if I need
to print some jobs in remote, or if the print queue is long enough to
last for the night ...

The official HP help pages (web source or PDF cd-rom source) only refer
to Microsoft Windows software control panel interface.

Please, could You help me? I wrote this question to the "question"
section of LaunchPad, and I had no answer at all.

[Bug 573625] [NEW] UbuntuOne client failed to sync

2010-05-02 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

The local Ubuntu One folder shows the "ok" icons for each file. However,
after 1h and 17 minutes one file (1.5 MBytes) is shown as "uploading"
onto the "My Storage" webpage.

It seems that the file was not actually uploaded, but at the same time
the local folder seems to shown it was.

I suppose this is a bug.

[Bug 546448] Re: wrong firefox ui language after Karmic to Lucid upgrade

2010-05-03 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Hi there. I moved from Karmic to Lucid today.

Now the "tools / add-on" sub-menu shows 2 "error" entries:

Xulrunner (en-GB) 1.9.1.2 with the classic "red error icon"

Xulrunner (it) 1.9.1.2 with the classic "red error icon" and the Italian
comment (here I translated it): "Not compatible with Firefox 3.6.3"

I guess it is a bug quite similar to the Guilherme's bug. Isn't it?

Ciao from Italy.

Sorry to bother You with a "stupid" question ...

How to "quit the Ubuntu One client" ? If I simply close the Ubuntu One

So, I suppose I should also kill (sigterm) some more program, shouldn't
I? Which one?

[Bug 573625] Re: U1 failed to sync, failed with the error: TRY_AGAIN

2010-05-04 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Many thanks. I've followed Your instructions.

Now the local U1 client updated some files. It also worked quite in a
short time, if compared to some previous tests.

The config file syncdaemon.conf now looks "standard". Why the config
file was wrong? I never edited it, nor I modified any config parameter
of U1 ... the problem rised after moving from Karmic to Lucid ...

Is this bug fixed? Is this story ended? (If so, please, change the
status of this bug report to the right status ...)

Many many thanks.

2010-03-30 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Sorry to bother You but I still have this problem (impossible to manual
configure a wired connection) after upgrading to 9.10

I'm not able to fix it by applying the proposed PPA "ppa:network-
manager/trunk" just because my machine is not able to connect to the
Internet, just because of the but itself.

How to fix it? I'm only able to download something from another machine
and loading it into the bugged machine by some CD-ROM or memory stick.
Please, could You explain me how to this?

Regards.

Thanks.

I've completed the step-by-step procedure described in the link above.

Should I now run "thunderbird" invoking it from command-line, and
prepending it with "gdb"? Unfortunately, the "thunderbird" command is
actually a symlink to a shell script, which actually invokes the binary
file:

## This script is meant to run the mozilla-bin binary from either
## mozilla/xpfe/bootstrap or mozilla/dist/bin.
##
## *The script will setup all the environment voodoo needed to make*
## *the mozilla-bin binary to work.*

Therefore I don't know how to to the job in the correct way. Please, let
me have further instructions.

However, after the sudden crash on April 19th, "thunderbird" worked fine
and without problems for 3 days. I don't know how to reproduce the
situation when it crashed.

Regards.

[Bug 581823] [NEW] Thunderbird: peculiar behavior of locale translation

2010-05-17 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Thanks for Your help.

When I reply to a message, the in-line copy of the original message is
preceded by the right Italian locale for "Mr. Smith wrote: ...".

When I forward a message, the in-line copy of the original message is
preceded by the right Italian locale for "Original message ... Subject:
... From: ... To: ...". However, in this case, the "Date: ..." field is
filled by English international date, not the Italian locale
translation. For instance, suppose the original message was sent today,
the "Date: ..." field displays "Data: Mon, 17 May 200", where "Data:" is
the Italian translation for "Date:". The right full locale translation
should be "Data: Lun, 17 Mag 2010".

I searched for some locale definition missing, or for some poor
configuration by myself. I was not able to find anything relevant into
my Lucid Lynx installation ...

Many thanks in advance.

[Bug 578701] Re: gnome-panel/clock-applet doesn't upgrade clock time

2010-05-18 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Incredible to say... after 6 days the bug vanished today. This morning I boot
up my computer and the clock-applet runs well, with normal second up-date.

During the last 6 days I never tried to change it or modify anything. So
it seems that it repaired by itself.

I can't imagine what happened. Any hint?

[Bug 582169] [NEW] DBus: some now and when got "timout" error

2010-05-18 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

I'm not sure "dbus" is the right reference package for this bug report.
Sorry if I selected the wrong place (and thanks to let me know the right
one).

Before upgrading to Lucid I never had such a problem. Everyday I
accessed to a local Samba server (wired by LAN), with no problem at the
age of Hardy or Karmic.

During the last few days, after upgrading to Lucid, I got the following
error:

"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive
a reply (timeout by message bus)"

Then I need to try again and again to connect to the Samba server, and
then I get the connection working well. Please, consider that during the
error time I'm able to check the hardware connection, and it is OK
(using FTP, HTTP, telnet - to the same server).

Many thanks for Your help in advance.

[Bug 582991] [NEW] Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text)

2010-05-19 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text).

After login (not always ... but often) the gnome-panel doesn't display
anything. The main-menu button is not present, nor the shut-down button,
nor the me-menu, nor the clock applet and so on. If I left-click with
mouse upon the normal area of such objects, I get the right behaviour.

Then I need to logout and login again (using the left-click of mouse
upon the right-hand limit of the gnome-panel area, where usually I see
the shudown button).

At the second login I always get the right beahivour but I always get
text fonts "deformed". See attached PNG image as sample.

I think this is a bug.

Many thanks for Your help.

[Bug 583660] [NEW] GDM doesn't start at boot time (I need to run it from terminal)

2010-05-20 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

LUCID installation running well since May 19th (3 days ago). Since that
day, at boot time, every day, GDM stopped to start automatically. Then I
need to login at terminal and run "sudo gdm".

I'm not expert of this stuff. I only got this ouptut /var/log/daemon.log

Furthermore, when GDM is later up and running, at login screen language-

[Bug 582991] Re: Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text)

2010-05-23 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. I discovered I'm able to recover from the problem with the command
"kill -HUP `pidof gnome-panel`". This way the panel refreshes with all the
stuff.

However, today a new sympton happens. After the first login, the gnome-
panel works normally. But after some time, the me-menu and the shudown-
menu vanished. So I performed the kill -HUP command to restore them

It seems to be a real bug.

The problem (crash) happened at first time during normal desktop

I read "valgrind" man page. I suppose that valgrind should launch the
application in order to trace it, shouldn't it?

It this is correct, I should run nautilus from the shell, encapsulating
it into valgrind. Well, I'm really not able to do so: I have no idea how
to run nautilus, because it usually start from the desktop environment
...

Please, could You tell me how to do this?

2010-06-11 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Thank You for Your help.

I run nautilus from "inside" valgrind. The system became so
sloow that it was actually not usable. I spent minutes to open a
folder, then minutes to navigate to a sub-folder. Actually I'm not able
to reproduce the real crash situation in this way.

Before closing, valgrind itself crashed or something related to valgrind
crashed, generating the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_valgrind_memcheck-
amd64-linux.1000.crash

So I don't know how to go on with this issue.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-06-11 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Hi there.

I try to use valgrind. I then run gnome-help from "inside" valgrind. I
repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash.
No crash happened. See attached file gnome-help-NOT-crash.txt

Then I ran gnome-help alone, without valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the
same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. I mean, I peform
EXACTLY the same steps-actions as before (with valgrind) and now I get
the crash. See attached files gnome-help-crash-a.txt and gnome-help-
crash-b.txt.

VERY IMPORTANT: when running from inside valgrdin, the printing
procedure displayed the printer (HW) interface, then a pop-up window
came claiming that the requested page to be printed was not "available"
... I cannot imagine what this means. When running alone without
valgrind, the printing procedure crashed BEFORE the printer (HW)
interface comes up, and no pop-up window came out.

It seems that valgrind some how "bounded" the gnome-help behaviour so
that gnome-help succeded in managing a "printing page fault", while
without valgrind gnome-help is not able to manage it.

Sorry for my bad english ... furthermore I'm not an expert ...

Any hint will be appreciated.

[Bug 580201] [NEW] Help tool displays a mix of English and Italian text inside each page

2010-05-13 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Please, see attached PNG image. When browsing help files I get a mix of
both English and Italian text, even inside a single page. The PNG image
is a clear example.

Thanks in advance.
Any help will be appreciated.

[Bug 580206] [NEW] gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-05-13 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I experienced many crashes (segmentation faults) while priting pages
from gnome-help. I wasn't able to find any logfile tracing this events.
Therefore, I run "gdb gnome-help" and the final output was:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0xb2816b70 (LWP 5751)]
0xb73e4ea9 in free () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

The crash happens ALWAYS when I select the command menu: file -> print
this document (sorry if the command is not this: I use the italian
version and I'm translating from italian ...)

When I try to print by means of file -> print this page, everything is
ok. But when I try "print this document" gnome-help ALWAYS crashes.

Any help will be appreciated.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-05-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Many thanks. See here new info and comments.

1) The problem reported yesterday happened onto a i386 computer. Today I
found again the same crash problem onto a AMD Sempron machine, running
the same up-to-date Lucid system.

2) No crash file was generated, nor running gnome-help inside GDB, nor
running it alone. I looked for "crash" file everywhere in the filesystem
using the "find" command line utility.

3) I run gnome-help from a terminal, and I captured the output: see the
attached TXT file. I'm not able to decrypt its meaning, but it seems to
be a real BUG.

Many thanks again. I hope that these info could help You to fix the
problem.

[Bug 580599] [NEW] Thunderbird 3.0.4 doesn't open "octet-stream" PDF attachments

2010-05-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Many thanks for Your attention.

If I receive some email including PDF attachments that are coded as
"application/pdf" MIME type, then I have no problem with this files.

If I receive some email including PDF attachments that are coded as
"application/octet-stream" MIME type, then Thunderbird 3.0.4 is not able
to manage them, and I'm not able to find a way to instruct (configure)
Thunderbird to open those files with Evince.

I can't imagine why some sender programs code PDF files as "application
/octet-stream" ... However it happens often.

I would like to understand if this is a problems of mine (poor
configuration of Thunderbird) or if this is a bug of the program.

Sorry if this is a FAQ. I extensively search the web, and I have found
MANY discussions (forums) about SIMILAR problems: all the solutions I've
found didn't fixed my problem.ù

Many thanks in advance.

[Bug 582169] Re: DBus: some now and when got "timout" error

2010-05-26 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Sorry to bother You again, but this problem appears daily. To connect to
the LAN server I need to try 4 - 5 times: only the last time the
connection is established: every time I get the "timeout" error and so I
need to repeat until I get the connection working. From that moment on,
the connection is stable, fast and reliable for the whole day, till
shutdown.

Furthermore, a new related problem appeared yesterday and today (see the
attached PNG image). The APPORT automatic collection and bug reporting
procedure opened up to record the crash of GVFS, and this crash happened
during the LAN connection attempts.

Please, is there anyone who can redirect my problem to the appropriate
development group? Is this a dbus problem, or gvfs problem or anything
else?

Thank You in advance.

When I left-click on the applet, it opens normally. However, if I try to
modify any parameter (for instance the "show seconds" option), the
modification doesn't take effect until the next applet is open. I mean,
if I modify the configuration the changes are not applied to the current
execution of the applet.

If I move the mouse onto the applet without a click, the pop-up tip
appears normally.

Yes, the new applet shows the up-to-date time, which is different from
the original one (the former applet that is freezed).

Yes. Both hardware and system time is running normally: no problem at

should notice that the procedure described is not correct for my Lucid
installation. It refers to some details that don't match:
1) File /etc/default/grub doesn't exist in my system, and I need to create it.
2) Command update-grub2 doesn't exist in my system, and I used update-grub
instead.

Then I tried the other solution. I installed startup-manager, but
unfortunately it crashed before running, and apport connected me to
launchpad again to report this bug too!

So, I'm back to the beginning of the problem. This is not a big problem,
just log-in to the terminal and then manually run GDM ... but I must say
that since Lucid appeared I went through many bugs (OpenOffice, Gdm,
Thunderbird, gnome-panel, clock-applet) that I never experienced with
Hardy or Karmic ...

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-12-21 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Sorry to bother You with further comments.

Let me complain about this bug management method.

I notified You a REAL bug. I spent many time (hours) to investigate the
problem according to the instruction You wrote me. I discovered that the
crash vanished when running the application "from inside" valgrind. I
reported the data output from gdb and valgrind. I'm not expert: I'm not
able to decrypt these info.

Last You invited me to try with Maverick. But I CANNOT try with
Maverick, since I never installed it.

Then the bug expired.

Ok, but the bug is still here. There is no way to print the manpages,
because the help program crashes when try to print.

Merry Christmas.

[Bug 312260] Re: assogiate won't assign icons to file types

2010-11-29 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Hi there. Using Lucid Lynx. Using nautilus.

I used assogiate to modify the standard icon for all files of type "PGP
/MIME-encrypted (application/pgp-encrypted)". I run assogiate as normal
user AND ALSO as root, but nothing happened in both cases.

Please, note that if I modified the textual description I get the
correct behaviuor: Nautilus shows the new modified textual
description... it only fails when dealing with icons.

Any hint?

Ciao and thanks from Italy.

The timing matter ("race conditions" or so) is quite relevant.

Nevertheless, each time I get a update from nvidia drivers my computer
stops to show the bug, and it starts it again only with some other next
update (not always, but often) related to some other packages.

The log today.

Start-Date: 2010-09-15 10:52:16

End-Date: 2010-09-15 10:55:45

After I got new nvidia 185 upgrade, the problem vanished again.

I don't know if this is relevant, I hope this will help to fix the
problem for ever.

[Bug 532436] Re: nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot

2010-06-29 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. Since yesterday, after an automatic upgrade, the problem onto my PC
is vanished. GDM starts ad boot without problems. (I'm closing my bug report
#583660, which was linked to the present one as "duplicate".)

I don't know why the bug vanished. I can only say that yesterday APT-GET
downloaded the following packages:
libparted0debian1 (2.2-5ubuntu5, 2.2-5ubuntu5.1), empathy-common
(2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), language-selector-common (0.5.7, 0.5.8),
empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), parted (2.2-5ubuntu5,

2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2), nautilus-sendto-empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1,
2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1)

Then I suppose that new version of gdm fixed the problem.

Many thanks.

[Bug 578701] Re: gnome-panel/clock-applet doesn't upgrade clock time

2010-06-29 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 575410 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/575410

Yet more incredible to say, the bug reappears again since yesterday, after last
upgrade.

Yesterday, APT-GET downloaded these packages:
libparted0debian1 (2.2-5ubuntu5, 2.2-5ubuntu5.1), empathy-common
(2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), language-selector-common (0.5.7, 0.5.8),
empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), parted (2.2-5ubuntu5,

2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2), nautilus-sendto-empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1,
2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1)

After this, the clock freezed again. And today is still frozen after the
new bootstrap. As before, if I run the clock applet again, the second
instance works well.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-06-29 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

I found this bug issue searching the web. I notified a similar bug (#578701) on

yesterday.

The symptom: clock applet freezes at bootstrap and it stays frozen
forever. If I run "sudo kill -HUP `pidof gnome-panel`" the whole gnome-
panel starts up again, and the clock applet starts working fine.

I can't provide You crash informations, because I have no crash here. So

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-06-30 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Many thanks for Your help.

Please, specify what do You mean with "backtrace" in my case. See
comment #12 ... I have no crash on my computer. The clock just freeze at
boot even if the process is running. With "freeze" I mean that the
displayed figures don't change in time, and don't change if I modify the
set up (show seconds on-off, show date on-off, show temperature on-off).
I can access all the menus and sub-menus of clock-applet without
experiencing faults or crashes. The only symptom is that the displayed
figures are frozen.

When I kill the gnome-panel process, clock-applet restart in a correct
status, and everything then works well.

I would like to collect a "backtrace" of this strange behaviour ...
please, tell me how ...

Thanks again.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2011-01-03 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Ok. I installed Maverick, and now the situation has became even worst.

Help program crashes during its startup. The main windows tries to open,
but after a while it crashes (without displaying nothing).

My previous complaint was about the procedure
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures which its almost tricky for
a normal user. I mean: I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bug
report. However it was not possible (see comments above #11, #12 and
#13.

Now I upgraded to Maverick. I followed again the procedure at wiki
pages.

The command "bash list-symbols-packages-v2.sh -p $(pidof -s yelp)" is
not usable: yelp never runs: it crashes always at startup. See attached
file yelp-logmessages.txt for the messages issued by yelp to command
line.

Therefore I tried "list-dbgsym-packages-v2.sh /usr/bin/yelp". It doesn't
work. Its output was unuseful (see attached file "list-dbgsym-
packages-v2.sh-output.txt"

So far I was not sure to have all the tools "ok" for the debugging.
However I tried to go on with wiki instructions.

Obviously I was not able to "attach" a gdb session to the running yelp
program, because the yelp program never runs: it crashes in a while.
Therefore I tried to run yelp from "inside" gdb, even if this approach
is not described into the wiki pages (and please, remember English is
not my language).

Incredible to say, yelp doesn't crashes if run inside gdb. It works,
until I try to print. When I try to print, it crashes.

Please, now see attached file yelp-gdb-log.txt where You see again the
crash info.

Many thanks so far. (Please, consider that I'm now "tracking" some bugs
I crashed on my computer. I subscribed launchpad for this purpose. This
bug seems that it is not seen but anybody else, isn't it?)

Ciao ... happy new year ...

[Bug 638266] Re: gthumb crashed with SIGSEGV in gdk_pixbuf_scale()

2011-02-07 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
I reported a similar bug as bug #714886.

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick.

Unfortunately I found that GTHUMB bacame totally UNSTABLE.

Gthumb crashes:
   - when resizing group of pictures
   - when deleting a picture
   - when moving a picture from a folder to another one
   - when converting a group of pictures ...

Ghumb crashes almost on 80% of its features.

Please, see attached GDB TXT output about the crash while resizing a
group of pictures (the file was attached to bug #714886).

[Bug 529696] Re: [SRU] brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2011-05-02 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
On June 16, 2010 I "fixed" the bug on my Linux systems by means of
Renzo's PPA.

Yesterday, the problem appeared again on a Maverick fresh installation.
So I should say that (at least) on one of my Linux box I have the
problem again. The Lucid boxes are OK.

Ciao from Italy.

[Bug 653194] Re: evince crashed after opening dvi file

@Romano:
Thanks for this info. However, I'm still using Maverick at home and Lucid at
office. Both releases suffer for this bug.

[Bug 600118] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV after closing all files

2011-02-25 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Dear Christopher,

I'd like to help You, but unfortunately the original crash happened on
June 30th 2010, and I cannot remember which file was last opened. Since
then, I experienced this bug almost daily, with many different files.
Therefore, on September I decided to hard attack the problem and I spent
a whole weekend trying to catch the situation running OpenOffice from
"inside" gdb. However, incredible to say, I noticed that OpenOffice
never crashes this way when ran from "inside" gdb!

So I'm actually unable to understand what to do to catch the bug.

I never used LibreOffice at all. I suppose that OpenOffice is the
official office suite for Ubuntu, isn't it? On the other way, I reported
an existing problem (almost daily crash events!) of OpenOffice ...

How could I help You to identify the crash reason?

Ciao
