[Bug 153055] Re: Firefox, Thunderbird crash if SCIM-Anthy is on

2008-06-30 Thread Arne Goetje
We believe this bug has been fixed by disabling shared input in SCIM's
default configuration in version 1.4.7-3ubuntu7. If you have a custom
SCIM configuration in your home directory (i.e. ~/.scim/global or
.scim/config are present), please make sure any line with
FrontEnd/SharedInputMethod is removed.

If this does not fix the issue, please test with Firefox 3.0 and reopen
this bug if the issue is still present there. As Firefox 2 won't be
improved anymore it is highly unlikely that this issue is going to be
fixed there (if it ever was a bug in firefox at all).

[Bug 260380] Re: Restart-required alert is jargon-filled and doesn't let you restart

2008-08-25 Thread Arne Goetje
I'm going to remove that dialog and use update-notifier instead. The
reboot is not really necessary to activate the changes, but restarting
the X session is. So, I'd like to show a note using update-notifier with
some wording to request the user to relogin.

Something like this:
"In order to activate the changes you'll need to restart your session. Please
logout and re-login at your earliest convenience."

Because English is not my native language, suggestions for rephrasing
this sentence are welcome.

As this also applies to the "Complex Character input" checkbox, as well
as installing / removing input-method packages, it should be more
general. How about:

"The new language settings will take effect once you have logged out."

Hmm... I just implemented it to use update-notifier to display the
message... I'm afraid the small print, which is only visible whenever
the selected value has not yet been applied, might be overlooked too easily.

Would this be acceptable, too?

[Bug 184028] Re: option to choose spell-checking dictionary

2008-08-26 Thread Arne Goetje
I will add an option to selectively install / remove "writing aids" (this
includes spell checkers) for each language. However, I don't see any
possibility to use more than one spell checker if you type in multiple
languages. This would be a useful feature, but it would need to be implemented
in the application you want to use. Currently all language related functions
are influenced by the environment locales.
Means, if your locale is set to es_ES, then only the Spanish spell checker will
be used in any application which gets started from that environment. If you
want to use the en_GB spell checker, then you would need to start your
application in the en_GB environment. For example:

$ LANG=en_GB oowriter &

But then the UI for that application would probably be also in English.

If you want to be able to switch between spell checkers on the fly in a
running application, that I'm afraid that application would need to be
modified to allow this. Language-selector won't be able to help here.

Would the function to selectively install / remove "Writing Aids" in
language-selector be sufficient to close this bug report?

[Bug 236028] Re: Min Nan Chinese not available in Language Support

2008-08-27 Thread Arne Goetje
ok, I have one problem with the current data:

The abday and abmon fields: If you look at two typical applications
which use these (cal on command line and the calendar applet on gnome),
you will find that the calendar applet only uses the first three letters
as an abbrevation, while 'cal' even only uses the first two letters.

What's more is that the default date format is: weekday month day.

So, with the current data, cal would display the weekdays as: lé pà pà pà pà pà
pà
and the calendar applet in gnome would use: "pài 8-g 28" for todays date.

One possibility would be to use:
abday "ji̍t, it, jī, saⁿ, sì, gō͘, la̍k" or "lé, it, jī, saⁿ, sì, gō͘, la̍k"
 abmon "01g, 02g, 03g, 04g, 05g, 06g, 07g, 08g, 09g, 10g, 11g, 12g"

Other suggestions?

Despite of this, I have the locale ready for upload.

Sorry, I should be more clear: the setting is tied to the "Default
Language" chooser. I'm not sure which language you want to use as system
default... if it's Polish, then select Polish there and then activate
Complex Character Support and click 'Apply'. That should do. If you want
to use US English, switch the "Default Language" back to English (USA)
and click 'Apply'. You need to do this for every non-CJK language
environment you want to use. (That is, because most non-CJK users don't
want to have SCIM enabled by default.)

Please don't fiddle with the config files manually.

Did you enable "Complex Character Support" in language-selector for
Polish? You need to enable that checkbox for every non-CJK locale you

[Bug 299296] [NEW] Please sync ttf-kochi 1.0.20030809-8 (main) from Debian unstable (main).

Please sync ttf-kochi 1.0.20030809-8 (main) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

The ubuntu delta only contains the lzma build option to save space on the CD
images. Since the use of ttf-kochi is now discuraged by upstream, we should
probably demote ttf-kochi to universe and use ttf-sazanami instead like
suggested by upstream.

Changelog since current jaunty version 1.0.20030809-4ubuntu3:

Thanks to Gaudenz Steinlin and Justin B Rye.
  * debian/control

ttf-kochi (1.0.20030809-6) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/NEWS.Debian
- kochi upstream development is discontinued and upstream suggest to use
"sazanami" font (ttf-sazanami-mincho/gothic), kochi based one. So we will
not fix some corrupted glyphes with kochi (those glyphes are fixed with
  sazanami -U+2211, U+221F, U+222E, U+301D, U+301F, U+3231, U+3232, U+3239,
  U+32A4, U+32A5, U+32A6, U+32A7, U+32A8, and U+33CD), and just close bugs.
  .
So Users, please use ttf-sazanami-mincho/gothic font, instead of kochi.
  * debian/control
- add "Suggests: ttf-sazanami-mincho/gochic" and recommend description to
  use ttf-sazanami-mincho/gothic (Closes: #424027).
  * debian/*.{postinst,prerm}

not necessarily. I see a potential conflict with Japanese users here:
they prefer Japanese glyph shapes.
65-nonlatin.conf comes from upstream fontconfig and generally we don't
touch those but add additional config files if we see a need for them.
Therefor we provided the 69-language-selector-$lang files, to give the
user the choice which CJK fonts they prefer. For non-CJK locale users,
the only way to activate those settings is to use fontconfig-voodoo on
the command line.
However, our preferred solution is to give the user full control over
his font settings: that's what I'm currently working on. A GUI called
font-selector, which gives the user full control over font preference,
hinting, anti-aliasing and embedded bitmap usage.
Bottom line: every user has different preferences, providing one
configuration that fits everyone is impossible.

In an ideal world, everyone would use markup text with language tags for
every paragraph or word. Then we could choose the appropriate font
automatically.
Therefor, I think we should add one config file which sets the
appropriate fonts for each language tag environment, then at least web
browsers should be able to get the correct font if the text is tagged
appropriately (which is unfortunately very seldom).

yes, it had to be pushed back since we had massive problems with our
language-packs and that had higher priority.
Further more I need to have some discussion with Keith Packard, the
fontconfig author on how to implement font-selector with fontconfig. We
will have him attending our UDS for Jaunty in 2 weeks, so I hope I can
get some input from him.
However, since development time for Jaunty is pretty short, I don't
expect everything to be ready for Jaunty, since I also have other things
to take care of.

[Bug 203349] Re: Broken plural forms in KDE

2008-11-13 Thread Arne Goetje
Apparently this was a major bug in Launchpad which has been fixed
already in May/June. Unfortunately we need to import all the KDE
translations again, since some data got lost due to that bug. This task
got lost somehow. We are working on reimporting them right now and will
generate new language-packs when it's done.

Thanks for the heads up.

@mandel59: can you please add a test case, so that we can reproduce the bug?
As you are using the ja_JP locale, I assume you use scim-anthy as input method?
What sequence do you type and which character do you select?

Can you please post the output of 'im-switch -l' ?

[Bug 384663] Re: Does not accept the right translation

2009-06-17 Thread Arne Goetje
Not yet.

What we need to have is a list containing the source package name and
the .pot or .po filenames for each source package.

Now, if I download the source package for kde-l10n-de for example, it
contains a lot of subdirectories, one for each project, I suppose, which
contain the .po files for German in this case. Each .po file carries the
translation domain in its filename.

When I download the source package of, let's say, kde4libs, it contains
a Messages.sh script, which is supposed to generate the .pot files on
build time if I'm not mistaken.

(Somehow I fail to build both source packages on my local machine, so I
cannot see what is actually happening.)

What I still don't understand is the relationship between those two
packages. In the kde-l10n-de package, the translations for kde4libs are
actually in the directory called 'kdelibs'. This suggests me that the
directory name does not necessarily match the source package name in
Kubuntu... so, how is this mapping done?

So, what we need is a list like:

kde4libskdelibs4
kde4libskdelibs_colors
...

We would need this list for every KDE upload, means the lists should be
versioned.

For the upcoming Karmic translation opening (hopefully next week), we
would need this list for the latest release in Jaunty (4.2.2) and for
the current one in Karmic (4.2.90). Then we can produce a diff and can
see what has changed.

We would then need to find out what happened to those templates, which
have changed between those two releases.
 * Is it a new template?
 * Has it been renamed from another name in the older release?
 * Has it moved across source packages?
 * What happened to those templates which were in the old release but
are missing in the new one? Have they been obsoleted, renamed or moved?

I don't know how things work on the Kubuntu-devel side... so, I cannot
give any scripting advice. Maybe those template movements can be tracked
in the svn changelog?

So, I need some input here. :)

This feature is on my radar and will be implemented during karmic cycle.
It's basically the LANG vs. LC_MESSAGES setting. So, in case of the OP,
he would be able to set LANG to pt_PT to get his date/time format right,
and LC_MESSAGES to en_US to get an English desktop.

[Bug 368388] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04 locale mess

2009-04-30 Thread Arne Goetje
OK, so it's a network problem. You cannot download the language-packs from the
internet.
Because of space restrictions, the swedish language packs, like most
language-packs are not shipped on the CD. They need to be downloaded from
Internet. Usually the installer takes care of that. But if you cannot connect
to Internet, then of course it doesn't work.

What kind of network adapter do you have?

Note, that this issue is now a driver/configuration issue with your
hardware and not a language-pack issue anymore.

Can you please attach the output of 'lspci' and 'dmesg'?

Thanks.

"Smart Pinyin" is present in the "Simplified Chinese" sub-menu of the input
method list under its Chinese name, like in Intrepid, as it is a primarily
"Simplified Chinese" module. However, you also can type traditional Chinese
characters with it.
PLease verify that you have the scim-pinyin package installed.

[Bug 330517] Re: EurekaSans font family shows as multiple individual fonts. Expecting one font family (worked in Dapper)

2009-02-24 Thread Arne Goetje
@valentyn:
I don't think that this is an improvement. If you take a look at the
screenshots, you will notice (if you happen to understand Dutch), that the
information in the font list and the style is actually the same.
The fonts EurekaSans-Bold, -BoldItalic, -Regular and RegularItalic should not
show up, since this is information is already in the style box:
 * Licht / Normaal -> Regular
 * Licht Cursief / Schuingedrukt -> RegularItalic
 * Vet / Zwart -> Bold
 * Vet en schuingedrukt / Zwart cursief -> BoldItalic

So, I think this bug report is valid. Whether this is in fontconfig or
the font package, we'll need to find out.

[Bug 335307] Re: Please enable language support for Crimean Tatar (Crimean Turkish) locale (crh)

2009-02-27 Thread Arne Goetje
Please no patch!

Language packs are generated entirely automatic.

The reason why crh is missing, is that it either didn't have any
translations in Launchpad when the first -base packages were built, or
that they were missing in the full export from Launchpad.

Anyways, it will be fixed with the next full export, which might happen
tonight UTC time. We will probably have language packs for crh available
at the beginning of next week.

To get the native name displayed in language-selector, please make sure
the corresponding language name entry in the iso-639 and iso-639-3
templates are translated into your native language. Likewise for the
country name in iso-3166.

OK, I did an installation in a virtual machine using the Ubuntu desktop CD with
the graphical installer in Swedish.
The desktop comes up fine and translated in Swedish. See attached screenshot.

Steps to reproduce:
 * in the boot menu choose 'Svenska' as language
 * 'Installera Ubuntu'
 * always click the continue button
 * at the end it will reboot the computer
 * desktop comes up in Swedish.

I will try the same thing with Kubuntu now.

So, unless you can reproduce this bug and tell me exactly the steps to
reproduce this bug, I'll make it as 'Invalid'.

I have suggested that scim-bridge* and skim are removed from the Kubuntu
seeds for Intrepid. That means, they should not be installed anymore on
a pristine install from the final image. However, when upgrading from
Hardy, things might go wrong and the user would need to remove those
packages by hand.

My guess is that the code would need to be ported to qt4 first.

Anyways, scim-qtimm should not be needed for qt4 applications, AFAIK
plain XIM works fine. But for legacy qt3 apps, I'm not sure how to
handle this... setting the QT_IM_MODULE variable should affect both qt3
and qt4 applications and in this case conflict...

(damn this design!) I hope we can do better for Jaunty...

[Bug 264123] Re: please remove ttf-manchufont from dependency

2008-10-14 Thread Arne Goetje
Mongolian in Mongolia uses Cyrillic script, that's correct. But in China's
Inner Mongolia Region, they use Mongolian script.
The font is not to be meant to be used as default font for the desktop. If
fontconfig chooses this font over others, I suggest to add some fontconfig
rules to the font package to prevent this.

As the language-support-fonts-* packages contain extra fonts which might
be of general interest to the users of that language, but is not limited
to a country or region, I suggest to keep the package as it is, but add
some fontconfig magic to ttf-manchufont as described above.

The proper way would be to tell fontconfig to ignore manchufont for the
mn_MN locale, but use it for mn_CN (for which we don't have locale data
yet).

If you agree to this proposal, I will implement it.

It doesn't. The scim-bridge-agent package depends on scim now, so that
makes sure that the delay in starting up applications does not happen
anymore.

Anyways, if you have properly disabled support for complex characters,
then this doesn't affect you anyways, because neither scim, nor
scim-bridge will run.

If this still affects you, then your installation is probably messed up.
If this is the case, please post the output of:

im-switch -l

> Only workaround consists in completely removing SCIM.

Wrong! The solution is to INSTALL scim, because scim-bridge depends on
scim!

yes, my mistake. I was editing both trv and nan locales at the same time
and just copied the metadata over... will fix it soon.

While we are at it:
1. ethnologue is not the authoritative data regarding language codes.
That's ISO 639-3.
2. There has been a proposal filed at ISO 639-3 to split the nan code
into dzu and xim, reflecting the Chaozhou and Xiamen dialects. As they
group the Taiwan dialect into the Xiamen group, we should probably use
xim_TW in future... ? (

[Bug 277478] Re: OpenOffice.org and SCIM problem while typing Nepali language.

2008-10-27 Thread Arne Goetje
Could you please test with the oo.o version provided by upstream, if
this bug happens there also? If it does, it's an upstream issue and
needs to be fixed there. If the upstream version works fine, I suggest
to look into the Ubuntu patches which have been applied to
openoffice.org.

Finally, it would be interesting to know if this problem occurs under
Gnome or KDE or both? I noticed some problems in the KDE environment
when running oo.o, but not under Gnome.

This is a known problem with java. Does this also happen with other
non-java applications?
Maybe related to the fact that java uses the XIM protocol, which is not
very reliable. BUt I'm not sure if the bug is in scim or in java.

Could be multiple things.

a) a misconfigured system: to find out, please post the output of
'im-switch -l'

b) a bug in nautilus, GTK, Gnome or other libraries involved.

c) a bug in scim, which is unlikely, since scim works fine in other text
fields in GTK/Gnome applications.

Also, it would be nice to know which Ubuntu flavor (Ubuntu/Kubuntu) and
release version (Gutsy, Hardy, Intrepid?) your friend uses.

The flash plugin issue is also known and a bug in the flash plugin.
Since it's proprietary software, we cannot fix it but have to wait for
Adobe to fix it.
