[Bug 221960] [NEW] Transmission crashes and logs me out

2008-04-25 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

I open Transmission 1.06, select a torrent and press "Details", and then the
"Clients/Peers" tab (2nd tab), and pulls one of the tabs in the box that shows
connected peers (not the window itself) to the right to make the window larger,
and then the screen goes black, all programs are terminated and the system logs
me out.
I am using a fresh Ubuntu 8.04 install with only a few programs installed, and
no other problems so far.

My hardware:
A Fujistu-Siemens computer with a brandless motherboard, Intel P4 3GHz
processor and an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS graphics card running the proprietary
accelerated driver.

I am including a video in 3gp format filmed with my cellphone to show
what happens.

[Bug 488720] Re: Linux Kernel 2.6.32-5 completely fails to resume on Macbook 5.1

2010-02-10 Thread Anton Eliasson
Is this file (98smart-kernel-video) supposed to be in /etc/pm/sleep.d?
In that case I don't have it, possibly because I'm currently running the
free nv driver?

Make sure you're using the proprietary nvidia-driver, not the open one
because suspend probably doesn't work with that

[Bug 441195] Re: [karmic] Dell Inspiron 9400 / ICH7 - Mixer controlling wrong settings

2010-01-22 Thread Anton Eliasson
This bug is still present in Lucid alpha 2.
I have another fix for this issue, I can't remember where I originally found it
but a while ago I posted it on the Inspiron 9400 page on the Ubuntu Wiki
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/DellInspiron9400)

The fix:
Open /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf and look for the
LFE, Master and Hardware Master elements. Change 'volume = merge' to 'volume =
ignore'. Now run alsamixer from a terminal and set Master and LFE to 100%.
Volume hotkeys will now control PCM volume only, which is what you'll want.

I haven't tested pato101's fix but my guess is that they both do the
same thing. Anyway I thought I should let you know about this
alternative fix.

[Bug 441195] Re: [karmic] Dell Inspiron 9400 / ICH7 - Mixer controlling wrong settings

2010-01-22 Thread Anton Eliasson
Looked around a bit and found that I had originally taken my workaround from
#410948 - Volume too loud.
According to the comments there editing /etc/pulse/default.pa is the better way
to go so never mind my last comment (#21). I also mixed the words "workaround"
and "fix", and this is just a workaround - the real problem seems to be in
linux and not in pulseaudio

[Bug 557458] [NEW] Unplugging homebrew LIRC receiver causes kernel malfunction

2010-04-07 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

I've built an IR receiver, emulating the LIRC-compatible Igor Cesko
USB-receiver. After plugging it in, I can watch the incoming IR-commands in
/dev/lirc0. But when I unplug it, I get this message about a "serious problem
in the kernel, Your system might become unstable now and might need to be
restarted", I don't know the exact message in English since my system uses
Swedish. New USB-devices are not enumerated and does not appear in /dev until I
reboot.
I wasn't able to report this after the kernel "crash" because Apport wouldn't
run so I am sending this after a reboot using ubuntu-bug. dmesg seems to
contain a lot of errors, I'll attach a log below. This occurs both with and
without the "lirc" package installed. I can reproduce this anytime by just
replugging the USB device. No idea if this is a regression, but if it helps, I
can test it with any kernel after 2.6.32-11 (currently running Lucid beta,
kernel 2.6.32-19)

[Bug 557458] Re: Unplugging homebrew LIRC receiver causes kernel malfunction

2010-04-07 Thread Anton Eliasson
Forgot to mention the specific device I'm using, it's an open source project
based on an AVR microcontroller.
Project homepage: http://www.xs4all.nl/~dicks/avr/usbtiny/

Attaching dmesg log. [ 822.040156] is when I unplugged the device

[Bug 555755] [NEW] Windows stick halfway while quickly moving them between workspaces

2010-04-05 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

To reproduce:
press ctrl+alt+shift+right arrow to move a window to the next workspace. Then,
before the animation is done, press ctrl+alt+left arrow to go back to the
previous workspace. The window will stop halfway and stay visible on both
workspaces, even if it's maximized.

[Bug 513890] Re: Suspend on Dell Inspiron 9400 broke in Lucid devel

2010-04-23 Thread Anton Eliasson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 488720 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488720

This bug is a duplicate of #488720 as it only concerns Nvidia cards.
When I reported this bug I didn't know it was Nvidia-specific so I just
reported it for this computer (mine has a Geforce Go 7800). It was also
a regression in Lucid, since suspend has worked reliably for this model
for several years now. You should report your bug as a separate one, if
you haven't already

I'm currently using the old nvidia 173, not nvidia-current, with lucid
kernel 2.6.32-14-generic-pae. Suspend/resume works fine. Graphics are
messed up a few seconds on resume, but X and GDM survives without
restart

[Bug 513907] [NEW] ubuntu-bug tries to execute firefox-3.5 but fails since it has been replaced with firefox

2010-01-28 Thread Anton Eliasson

[Bug 1633649] Re: spl-dkms 0.6.5.6-0ubuntu4: spl kernel module failed to build

2017-02-10 Thread Anton Eliasson
As a workaround you can add the yakkety repositories (with a very low
priority in order to not accidentally upgrade any other part of your
system) and install the ZFS packages from there. They are pretty self-
contained and shouldn't interfere with anything else. Look for "apt
pinning" for details on this approach.

I have the following yakkety packages installed on my xenial system in
order to use ZFS successfully:

$ dpkg -l | grep 0.6.5.8 | awk '{print $1 " " $2 " " $3 " " $4}'
ii libnvpair1linux 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii libuutil1linux 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii libzfs2linux 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii libzpool2linux 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii spl 0.6.5.8-2 amd64
ii spl-dkms 0.6.5.8-2 all
ii zfs-dkms 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii zfs-doc 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 all
ii zfs-zed 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64
ii zfsutils-linux 0.6.5.8-0ubuntu4 amd64

@ehoover (and others), if you have the time and want to help the effort
along, you could test the patch against the latest development release
of update-notifier (compiled from bzr) and try to get it merged. Then it
can be backported into the stable version in Ubuntu 16.04.

[Bug 1318321] Re: "the cache has no package" error when wine update is available

2017-01-20 Thread Anton Eliasson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1597537 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1597537

Then it's fixed in upstream update-notifier and the maintainer is aware
of the issue. Not much more we can do then I guess other than wait for a
backport to Xenial. I'm marking this bug as a duplicate, since the other
bug has received response from the maintainer (even though this bug is
older).

[Bug 1230355] Re: server replied: Forbidden

2016-10-28 Thread Anton Eliasson
You need to create a personal Youtube API key as described on
https://github.com/flaviotordini/minitube

Then launch Minitube from a terminal like this:

$ GOOGLE_API_KEY=abcd minitube

No, this is not user friendly at all.

[Bug 1603798] Re: phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer is missing as a dependency

2016-10-28 Thread Anton Eliasson
This report is somewhat related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/minitube/+bug/629936 which
states that Minitube should *not* depend on phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer
because that brings in unnecessary dependencies on Kubuntu (KDE has
native support for Phonon).

However, it could depend on the metapackage phonon4qt5 which will pull
in a suitable backend for the distribution, either GStreamer or Phonon.

[Bug 1382113] [NEW] avrdude 6.0.1 confuses efuse with hfuse

2014-10-16 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

With avrdude 6.0.1 from Ubuntu 14.04 repo:

$ avrdude -c avrisp2 -p m88 -P usb -q

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions
avrdude: Device signature = 0x1e930a

avrdude: safemode: Fuses OK (H:01, E:DC, L:E2)

avrdude done. Thank you.

With avrdude 6.1 compiled from source:

$ ./avrdude -c avrisp2 -p m88 -P usb -C /etc/avrdude.conf -q

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions
avrdude: Device signature = 0x1e930a

avrdude: safemode: Fuses OK (E:01, H:DC, L:E2)

avrdude done. Thank you.

The second output is correct (E:01 and H:DC). The easiest solution is to
upgrade avrdude to version 6.1.

[Bug 1037798] Re: Recursive loop in Baobab disk space analyser

2012-08-29 Thread Anton Eliasson
Is it really relevant whether it ends at all or after a long time. The
total number and size of files turns out wrong either way, because files
are counted multiple times.

[Bug 796744] Re: Regression: Encoding Vorbis from FLAC source causes audible artefacts at regular intervals

2011-10-29 Thread Anton Eliasson
This has sort of already been reported upstream:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/soundconverter/+bug/792742,
however the conclusion was made that this is instead a problem in
GStreamer and not in Soundconverter. I also tested one of my converted
files with ogginfo and it did indeed produce a similar output.

See also https://trac.xiph.org/ticket/1807 and
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=722667. The latter contains
a patch (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=514575) for
GStreamer which fixes the bug. By compiling gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
from source with this small patch, I can confirm this. Therefore, I am
now marking this bug as invalid, since it wasn't in neither
Soundconverter nor Ubuntu after all.

** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #722667

** Changed in: soundconverter (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Invalid

[Bug 796744] [NEW] Regression: Encoding Vorbis from FLAC source causes audible artefacts at regular intervals

2011-06-13 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: soundconverter

When I convert FLAC files to Ogg Vorbis using Soundconverter, audible artefacts
are introduced at every ~40,5 seconds in the form of short breaks in the
stream. These are slightly noticeable in Mplayer (1.0rc4-4.5.2) and very
noticeable in Totem (2.32.0). They also cause my Sandisk Sansa Clip+ portable
music player to pause and skip to the next track.
So far I've only found this problem to occur when encoding FLACs directly to
Vorbis. I've been able to reproduce it with several different source files from
different artists and albums, originally encoded by both me and others. It does
not occur if I first decode the FLAC to WAVE using 'flac -d ' and
then compress the WAVE file to Vorbis. Nor does it occur if I convert the same
FLAC source to MP3.

Here are a few files encoded with different bitrates:
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01-Hunab_Ku-64k.ogg
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01-Hunab_Ku-128k.ogg
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01-Hunab_Ku-256k.ogg
and the source:
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01-Hunab_Ku.flac

I'm fairly sure that this bug is a regression. Here's a file I encoded with
Soundconverter a year ago, without audible artefacts:
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01_-_Don_t_Tell_Me_That_It_s_Over-20100614.ogg
Here's one I encoded today with more or less the same settings, from the same
source. This has the choppiness every 40,5 seconds I mentioned earlier:
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01_-_Don_t_Tell_Me_That_It_s_Over-20110613.ogg
And the source:
http://www.nastalektion.se/dump/01%20-%20Don't%20Tell%20Me%20That%20It's%20Over.flac

Please note that all the files I've linked to are copyrighted to their
respective owners. Only use them for educational purposes, such as for
solving this bug. Please don't spread them on.

[Bug 796744] Re: Regression: Encoding Vorbis from FLAC source causes audible artefacts at regular intervals

2011-07-02 Thread Anton Eliasson
I did some troubleshooting today:
This bug is not present in Maverick running as a virtual machine in Virtualbox.
Back to Natty: Converting a flac file as described above as a different user
yielded the same result, which should rule out errors caused by defect config
files in my home dir. I tried building soundconverter from source code in
different variations. First the one distributed with Ubuntu (apt-get source
soundconverter; fakeroot debian/rules binary; dpkg -i
soundconverter_1.4.4-2_all.deb), the same version from upstream (tar xf
soundconverter-1.4.4.tar.bz2; ./configure; sudo checkinstall) and the latest
upstream version (tar xf soundconverter-1.5.4.tar.gz; ./configure; sudo
checkinstall). All of these were affected by this bug.

This might be a backend issue. The version of Soundconverter shipped with Natty
gives this startup message:
SoundConverter 1.4.4
using Gstreamer version: 0.10.32, Python binding version: 0.10.21
  using gio
  using 4 thread(s)
While in Maverick the startup message is:
SoundConverter 1.4.4
** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject)
using Gstreamer version: 0.10.30, Python binding version: 0.10.19
  using gio
'lame' element not found, disabling MP3.
'faac' element not found, disabling AAC.
  using 2 thread(s)

I'll look around and try to find out how much pain it is to update
Gstreamer to 0.10.32 in Maverick.

[Bug 796744] Re: Regression: Encoding Vorbis from FLAC source causes audible artefacts at regular intervals

2011-07-02 Thread Anton Eliasson
Well, here's what I did: I opened my virtual Maverick's /etc/apt/sources.list
up in gedit and replaced all instances of maverick with natty. OH NO YOU
DIDN'T, I can hear you say. But hey, I'll just roll back to a previous snapshot
when I'm done, no problem. So, after that I ran an apt-get update and an
apt-get upgrade but I didn't actually upgrade anything. I just wanted a list of
gstreamer packages to upgrade, specifically:
gstreamer0.10-alsa gstreamer0.10-nice gstreamer0.10-gnonlin
gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-base-apps
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-tools
gstreamer0.10-x
apt-get install which upgraded what I wanted as well as these
packages:
libasound2 libc-bin libc-dev-bin libc6 libc6-dev libgssdp-1.0-2
  libgstfarsight0.10-0 libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libgstreamer0.10-0
  libgupnp-1.0-3 libjpeg62 libnice10 libnih-dbus1 libnih1 liborc-0.4-0
  libpython2.7 libsqlite3-0 multiarch-support python2.7 python2.7-minimal
I realised that soundconverter wasn't installed at that point so I just pulled
it down with apt-get install soundconverter. And look at that:
anton@spire:~$ soundconverter
SoundConverter 1.4.4
** Message: pygobject_register_sinkfunc is deprecated (GstObject)
using Gstreamer version: 0.10.32, Python binding version: 0.10.19
  using gio
'lame' element not found, disabling MP3.
'faac' element not found, disabling AAC.
  using 2 thread(s)
The encode went fine and the resulting file had no stutter every 40,5 s. The
next step is to just bite the bullet and do a full apt-get upgrade. Will get
back to this bug when that's finished.

[Bug 806205] [NEW] drag and drop from deb archive extracts more than selected

2011-07-05 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

To reproduce: Open any deb file that has more than one directory in its root in
File Roller, for example "usr" and "DEBIAN". Drag any of them to any target
directory in Nautilus.
What happens: Both directories are recursively extracted. If any of them
existed previously in the target, they will also get overwritten as per

[Bug 796744] Re: Regression: Encoding Vorbis from FLAC source causes audible artefacts at regular intervals

2011-07-06 Thread Anton Eliasson
Updating the system didn't seem to cause any major problems, it survived
a reboot just fine. However, this bug never occurred even though both
Gstreamer and Soundconverter are of the same version as they are in my
native 11.04 installation. So I guess this is just another weird bug
caused by updating to Ubuntu Vista 11.04. Since I have absolutely no
idea how to troubleshoot this one any further, I'll probably just let it
expire.

[Bug 810183] [NEW] last performance test should use larger units than hours whenever applicable

2011-07-13 Thread Anton Eliasson

I did a performance test on one of my disks around September last year.

particular example, since it is equal to zero.

[Bug 721879] [NEW] PDF files created in ABBYY Finereader 10 are unreadable in Evince

2011-02-19 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

If I try to open a PDF file created by the Windows OCR program ABBYY Finereader
10 in Evince, the entire document is unreadable. The background is a colorful
pattern, stretching the whole document even when the background is supposed to
be white. The "file" command suggests that the files are "PDF documents,
version 1.3".
This bug also exists in Okular, xpdf and ePdfViewer, so it might be a backend
issue. Foxit Reader can however open them without problems.

gv which is based on Ghostscript can view these problematic files
without visual artefacts. So this is very likely a bug in Poppler.

[Bug 710412] Re: Document Viewer Does Not Display Graphics in PDF Files

2011-02-20 Thread Anton Eliasson
This might be a duplicate of bug #450533
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/450533), which
dates back to 2009 and is also caused by the lack of openjpeg support in
poppler. Could someone confirm this?

[Bug 388314] Re: Nautilus right and left arrow to open directories in tree view

2011-05-26 Thread Anton Eliasson
Not a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+2.0/+bug/307713
But from what I understand from the description, this bug is fixed now, one way
or another. In the Nautilus list view, I can open and close directories with
the right and left arrow keys.
I am therefore closing this bug now.

[Bug 789977] [NEW] Failed to reduce size of NTFS partition

2011-05-29 Thread Anton Eliasson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

Tried to reduce the size of an NTFS partition from ~230 to ~220 GB on a
USB-connected HDD.

ntfsresize -P --force /dev/sdh1 -s 234552052223 --no-action says:
[snip]
Relocating needed data ...
ERROR: Extended record needed (1032 > 1024), not yet supported!
Please try to free less space.

I just ran chkdsk /f on it in Windows 7 so it wouldn't surprise me if it messed
up the filesystem somehow. Full Gparted-log here:

[Bug 789977] Re: Failed to reduce size of NTFS partition

2011-06-02 Thread Anton Eliasson
Yes, I have. The file system wasn't very fragmented or filled up, had no
protected files and chkdsk /r /f didn't help. But after removing almost
100 GB worth of unnecessary files it shrunk without problems. There were
quite a lot of files in System Volume Information so I'm guessing the
file system has been pretty badly damaged at some point.

No problem. Does this make the bug invalid or should it be converted to
a question? It's still a problem however that it's fairly difficult to
resize NTFS partitions using ntfsprogs.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Steps to reproduce (Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates as of nov 13, 2010):
