[Bug 156329] hp compaq nc6220 reboot hang

2007-10-23 Thread Alex Chiang
Public bug reported:

HP Compaq nc6220 laptop, hangs on reboot. Shutdown works successfully.
Symptom occurs in both Feisty and Gutsy.

According to Gentoo guys, may need to add reboot=b to kernel command
line.

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Gentoo_on_HP_Compaq_nc6220

Tried this fix on my machine (with Gutsy), and now reboot works fine.

[Bug 156885] gutsy system hang on hp xw8200

2007-10-24 Thread Alex Chiang
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy, my system experiences frequent,
random lockups. System no longer responds to pings.

I configured a serial console, and managed to capture a magic sysrq of
the task list, which I will attach. While it was dumping out the
information to the console, even the serial console connection hung, so
I am not sure if the dump is complete.

Please let me know if this is enough information, or if you need more.
This is a pretty serious bug, as it renders my workstation unusable.

Please disregard the prior dmesg. That came from an attempt to boot an

stability. I am attaching a dmesg with the "real" gutsy kernel that

2007-10-26 Thread Alex Chiang
I removed nvidia-kernel-common, nvidia-glx, and linux-restricted-
modules-2.6.20-xx. I'm not sure if my upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy was
botched there. I then reinstalled nvidia-kernel-common, nvidia-glx-new,
and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-14. I regenerated an xorg.conf using
nvidia-xconfig. System seems to be stable again.

Probably some sort of weird kernel module version mismatch. In any case,
all is well again.

[Bug 218296] [NEW] [hardy] window sizes not saved across sessions

2008-04-16 Thread Alex Chiang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

* latest hardy beta
* System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects -> None
* System -> Preferences -> Sessions -> Session Options -> Automatically
remember running applications when logging out

Create a bunch of plain old xterms (not gnome-terminal or whatever),
resize them to various sizes (I like 80x50), and reposition around on
screen.

Exit session, log back in.

Get the same number of xterms that were previously open, but they all
start at 80x24 and all are in the upper left corner of the screen.

I would have expected various window sizes and positions to be saved
across the session as well.

I re-ran the experiment and attached the session file from

get restored properly.

One more piece of data -- I am running a dual-headed setup.

[Bug 77291] Re: mythfrontend on fglrx: startup crash "floating point exception"

2007-03-24 Thread Alex Chiang
This looks like it's due to
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt-x11-free/+bug/81686 .

You can verify by running 'xdpyinfo | grep resolution'. If you get some
huge crazy numbers, then that's probably it.

The workaround is to manually set the DPI information. I did this in my
xorg.conf file in the Monitor section. You need to add the following
line:

DisplaySize xxx yyy

To calculate xxx, multiply the horizontal resolution of your display by
25.4 and then divide that answer by 96.

To calculate yyy, do the same with your vertical resolution.

For my 800x600 setup, I used the following line:

DisplaySize 211 158

Restart X and then rerun xdpyinfo | grep resolution to verify that you
successfully changed the DPI setting. I got mythtv working again using
this.

[Bug 557072] Re: system does not power off

2010-04-28 Thread Alex Chiang
Ákos, hm, that's a bad sign. I was hoping that rmmod'ing everything
would have helped.

How about this: try building as many things modular as possible: 'make
allmodconfig' and then repeating the experiment?

The idea I'm testing out is that perhaps the kernel bit that was
behaving poorly was compiled into your kernel, and thus when you did an
rmmod of all the modules, you didn't get the one that was really broken.

By building everything modular, you'll be able to rmmod more drivers to
help test the earlier theory.

Thanks.

[Bug 557072] Re: system does not power off

2010-04-26 Thread Alex Chiang
Hi all,

I'm unable to test this machine myself, as I had to return my unit after
leaving HP, but I did get some advice on how to make progress on this
bug.

The big picture is that the kernel is not putting the hardware into a
state that the firmware expects, which is why shutdown/suspend aren't
working.

We want to figure out which kernel driver is misbehaving, and to do so,
will use the process of elimination.

First step is to simply boot the kernel with init=/bin/bash and verify
that shutdown still fails.

Next, repeat step 1, but unload all modules first before shutting down.

Next, see if you can build a kernel with essentially no hardware
support, and see if you still get shutdown failures.

Add drivers into your kernel build one-by-one and keep testing shutdown.

Again, the idea here is that some kernel driver is doing the wrong
thing, which leaves firmware unable to properly shutdown the machine. By
eliminating all the drivers and slowly adding them back one by one,
we're trying to figure out which specific driver is misbehaving.

I recommend testing on latest upstream kernel.

Since there are several folks reporting the same bug and you all seem
pretty savvy, maybe someone can also try going back multiple versions of
the kernel and seeing if one works. If so, that would be a strong hint
that there's a broken commit in there, and we can try a bisect too.
Please coordinate using this bug or perhaps the mailing list that was
setup for members of the Envy 15 launchpad team.

Sorry for all the manual labor involved. This will be tedious, I'm sure. Thanks
for all your efforts.

[Bug 463940] Re: No fans, thermalzone on HP Envy 15 and HP DV6T Quad

2010-05-03 Thread Alex Chiang
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 516325 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516325

Hi all,

I plan on closing this bug.

The C2 / fan / thermal zone issues are fixed in:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/516325

The ACPI namespace errors indicate that the Ambient Light Sensor didn't
initialize which is relatively benign. These errors will not be fixed in
Lucid, but will be fixed for Maverick (or if you use any current
upstream kernel).

The windows-P bug is tracked by:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/539477

For other issues, please open a new bug.

Thanks.

[Bug 516325] [NEW] ACPI: enable C2 and Turbo-mode on Nehalem notebooks on A/C

2010-02-02 Thread Alex Chiang
Public bug reported:

Please backport the following patch into Karmic:

http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/1/26/368

From: Len Brown

upstream in 2.6.33-rc: 5d76b6f6c17572e662f5c99c2023adae92100855

Refreshed here for 2.6.32.y, applies w/ offset back to 2.6.29.y.

Linux has always ignored ACPI BIOS C2 with exit latency > 100 usec,
and the ACPI spec is clear that is correct FADT-supplied C2.
However, the ACPI spec explicitly states that _CST-supplied C-states
have no latency limits.

So move the 100usec C2 test out of the code shared
by FADT and _CST code-paths, and into the FADT-specific path.

This bug has not been visible until Nehalem, which advertises
a CPU-C2 worst case exit latency on servers of 205usec.
That (incorrect) figure is being used by BIOS writers
on mobile Nehalem systems for the AC configuration.
Thus, Linux ignores C2 leaving just C1, which is
saves less power, and also impacts performance
by preventing the use of turbo mode.

[Bug 463940] Re: No fans, thermalzone on HP Envy 15 and HP DV6T Quad

2009-12-12 Thread Alex Chiang

* Fans not working (at least on F.04).
* Thermal zone/sensors not working.
* ACPI parsing aborts in several places due to initialization bugs (Linux
does work around this)
* CPU Powersaving (aka C-State switching) only works if you boot the

* No critical shutdown temperature returned for anything else but Windows.

I got this message with F.03:

thermal_zone0
Dec 12 00:56:08 dre kernel: [1.843990] ACPI: Thermal Zone [TZ01] (61 C)

AE_NOT_FOUND

I looked in all the SSDTs and did not see the _PPC method defined
anywhere, so wondering where the theory in comment #43 about loading all
the SSDTs comes from. I also didn't find _REG in any of the SSDTs.

Both CPUT and PSSC are defined in DSDT, so I'm not sure why we can't
parse those. I'll dig into that.

I consider the current outstanding list of issues to now be:

   * Fans not working (at least on F.04).
* ACPI parsing aborts in several places due to initialization bugs (Linux
does work around this)
* CPU Powersaving (aka C-State switching) only works if you boot the
machine without AC adapter attached.

Curious about the statement regarding fans though. Are you simply
stating that because /proc/acpi/fans/ is empty? Or are your fans not
actually spinning up? My machine is running warm, but I definitely hear
and feel fan output.

Thanks.

[Bug 463940] Re: No fans, thermalzone on HP Envy 15 and HP DV6T Quad

2009-12-12 Thread Alex Chiang
Hi Ivo,

Thank you for all the debugging work you've done so far.

As of F.06, I can confirm that the fans seem to be throttling correctly.
A -j8 kernel build on this machine takes about 15 minutes. Observing the
value in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ01/temperature shows a peak of around
81 C which decreases to 58 C or so after the build is done.

I can also physically hear the fans spin up rather high, and then
throttle back after the build.

I think it's normal for /proc/acpi/fan/ to be empty, so I'm not too
concerned about that.

I'll take a closer look at the parsing of CPUT and PSSC, as well as the
C state oddity.

Thanks,
/ac

2010-05-13 Thread Alex Chiang
madbiologist,

Lucid will definitely get a solution. It's just a matter of time.

The next Lucid kernel will have a version of the
"acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable" patch. I'm not sure when it will be
released since the team is currently in Belgium for UDS.

I've had a little more time to think about adding another entry for the
T400 into Lucid, and it's probably a good idea. I'll look into doing
that next week. However, I do not plan on sending the T400-specific
patch upstream.

Just to clear up a little confusion, Matthew's patch in comment #4 is
actually removing all the entries from the DMI table, not adding any. He
does that because he also provides the proper way to solve the issue.

Thanks.

@vojtec, that is correct, I do not expect the kernel to succeed with
your machine, since it's not listed in the DMI table.

With the upstream kernel, you can pass the command line parameter. This
will not work with the current Lucid kernel, but the next Lucid release
will support the command line param.

I will propose adding your machine to the Lucid kernel as a SAUCE patch
as well.

What this means is that at some point in the unspecified future, the

I do not know when the kernel team will do the rebase, so at this point,

don't think a Launchpad bug is appropriate though, since that's
obviously not a supported kernel. I'd recommend sending a mail to LKML

gather.

Actually, are you sure that your initrd matches the kernel version

[Bug 578138] Re: Thinkpad T400 (model 2765-TDG) fails to resume after second suspend

2010-05-12 Thread Alex Chiang
@madbiologist, I'm a little confused.

Are you looking for an Ubuntu kernel patch for Lucid, or are you really
asking for a 2.6.34 upstream patch?

If you're really asking for upstream, I'm sorry to say, the answer is
"no". Let me explain.

We really don't want to add any more machines to that DMI table, and
there has been quite a bit of effort upstream by Matthew Garrett to find
the proper fix. I think he's pretty much got it now:

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.acpi.devel/45907

Matthew's patch should fix the bug once and for all. I believe it will
be targeted for 2.6.35.

In the meantime, please use the kernel command line workaround
"acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable". I know this is annoying, but should be
quite manageable if you're adventurous enough to run an upstream kernel.

For Lucid, it's a different story. We can add an Ubuntu-specific patch
to handle this machine.

[Bug 463940] Re: No fans, thermalzone on HP Envy 15 and HP DV6T Quad

2009-12-20 Thread Alex Chiang
Gabe,

I did some research too, and also think that TurboBoost works just fine
on this machine.

This paper explains why applications like powertop aren't telling the whole
story. It's also why looking at /proc/cpuinfo is misleading:
http://download.intel.com/design/processor/applnots/320354.pdf

I don't think a kernel patch is the right answer. Making the kernel poll
every second to show the user that TurboBoost is working seems both
wasteful and silly, IMO.

Patching powertop would be simple though, and much more appropriate.

One final piece of confirmation that TurboBoost is enabled is to look at
/proc/cpuinfo:

$ cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep flags | grep ida | uniq

The flag 'ida' tells you that TurboBoost is working. The formal name for
the technology is "Intel Dynamic Acceleration", which is what the flag
stands for.

http://www.lesswatts.org/projects/processor-power/dynamic-
acceleration.php

Finally, I don't know anything about fglrx. Xorg on my machine is using
the radeon module. I can post my Xorg.log here if you like...

2009-12-21 Thread Alex Chiang
Gabe,

I don't know anything about openSuSE, but I'm guessing you got a build
error in acpi_walk_namespace. My patch is based on 2.6.33, and
acpi_walk_namespace() grew an extra parameter.

If my guess is right, then fixing the patch should be trivial. Just find
where we're calling acpi_walk_namespace() and remove one of the three
trailing NULL args so you only have 2 of them.

Otherwise, you can post your build error here and I'll try and debug it.

[Bug 1650666] Re: GVim crashes when opening new tab

2017-11-09 Thread Alex Chiang
Using vim8 from a ppa has worked for me. The latest vim has the patch
mentioned in github#851.

Perhaps it could be SRU'ed into 16.04's vim7, but that would require
someone to put the effort in.

The PPA I used was:

ppa:jonathonf/vim

Thanks to @oymyisme for figuring out the root cause.

[Bug 469376] Re: USB device insertion causes total system lockup on Ubuntu 9.10

2010-11-29 Thread Alex Chiang
Hello all,

I can confirm that this modem causes a system freeze in Lucid.

As an experiment, I backported modem-manager from Maverick into Lucid,
with no other changes (it was a rather trivial backport).

After doing so, I am able to insert the modem without any issues.

[Bug 469376] Re: USB device insertion causes total system lockup on Ubuntu 9.10

2010-11-29 Thread Alex Chiang
This is bizarre.

I did a fresh install of Lucid 10.04.1 onto a netbook, then plugged in
my Option modem (0af0:d033).

I confirm that it caused my system to lock up.

I just spent the past 4 hours trying to bisect this issue, and I can't
get it to fail reliably.

In my bisection adventure, I found a point where I could checkout and
build/install a package, and no system freeze. I then checkout (build,
install) the commit immediately before and lo! a system freeze! This
makes me think that the package is broken up to the good commit.
However, this hypothesis has two problems:

1) Yes, the "bad" commit immediately prior the "good" commit breaks as
expected. The "bad" commit happens way after the commit we have in
Lucid. So far, so good. Theoretically, all the commits between the "bad"
one and the last Lucid one should all result in system freeze.
Unfortunately, that is not the case. I picked several random commits
between "bad" and "Lucid" and encountered success at each of them.

2) Simply downloading the exact modemmanager source from Lucid,
rebuilding it where the only debdiff is in the changelog, and then
installing it on my test system simply does not reproduce the failure.
This makes no sense, since the code didn't change at all in this
experiment. I made sure to reboot and purge the package before
installing my test package as well. No luck.

My original intent was to try and find the one good commit to backport
as an SRU into Lucid. However, with such unreliable bisection results,
there is no way that I can safely do so in good conscience. I would
essentially be backporting a random patch into Lucid and hoping that it
fixed the problem, which is not allowed by SRU policy. Also, backporting
the entire package from Maverick into Lucid is also disallowed by SRU
policy.

My best recommendation at this point is to move your systems to
Maverick.

If you are stuck on Lucid, please respond and we can try some more
testing. Perhaps you can bisect more reliably on your machine than I can
on mine which would help us to narrow down the issue.

[Bug 855556] Re: "Restart" and "Shut Down" don't work if anyone else is logged in

2012-05-18 Thread Alex Chiang
The merge proposal I submitted above
(https://code.launchpad.net/~achiang/ubuntu/quantal/casper/bug-86/+merge/106476)
is a minimal fix to allow shutdown/restart to work from the Unity
greeter during a live session.

I don't think it fixes the general case mpt is talking about in the
original description, but my patch is a small step in the right
direction.

[Bug 956845] Re: Inserting LinkSys PCMCIA Wireless Hangs Xubuntu 12.04 Beta

2012-05-20 Thread Alex Chiang
I ran into a similar situation just now, where my computer (an old Asus
Pundit-R with a Pentium IV) would lock up hard upon inserting a Broadcom
PCMCIA adapter (BCM4318).

Can you try this procedure:

1) sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source
bcmwl-kernel-source b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
1a) reboot
2) sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
3) do "Step 2" and "Step 3" here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#b43_-_No_Internet_access
4) shutdown computer
5) unplug PCMCIA card
6) power on computer
7) login
8) plugin PCMCIA card

With this sequence, I was able to get wifi working.

[Bug 956845] Re: Inserting LinkSys PCMCIA Wireless Hangs Xubuntu 12.04 Beta

2012-05-21 Thread Alex Chiang
Hi Cliff,

The point I'm making above is that the breakage doesn't seem related to
the kernel at all, but rather, having the proper PCMCIA firmware
installed, which then prevents lockups.

2014-11-21 Thread Alex Chiang
I see this issue also, on 14.04.1, and it's pretty frustrating.

What information can we collect to help debug this?

[Bug 1331077] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540] suspend/resume failure

2014-11-11 Thread Alex Chiang
@penalvch - if the manufacturer doesn't differentiate between the E440
and E540 at the BIOS level, how does it make any sense for a downstream
like Launchpad to maintain the fiction that they're two different
machines?

The condescension you demonstrate in #39 is unnecessary.

[Bug 1088424] Re: alsa midi sequencer not available on nexus 7

2012-12-19 Thread Alex Chiang
The high level answer is, the nexus7 Kconfig should turn on the same
options as the standard Ubuntu kernel.

So if Ubuntu turns them on, but the n7 does not, it is probably an
oversight.

Probably the real way to fix all these bugs is for the kernel team to do
a diff of the Kconfigs and sync them up... That was definitely supposed
to happen, but maybe it's still in flight.

rtg, can you weigh in please?

Adam,
