[Bug 343988] [NEW] GRUB not booting to correct disk
Public bug reported: Instaling 8.04.1 on my x64 system failed to set up GRUB properly. GRUB tryes to boot from disk 3,0 but linux (and GRUB) is installed on disk 1,0. This was fixed by editing the boot config using the live cd to access it. But after an update, the changes was reverted. Furtere more i will some times remove disk 0,0 as it is swapable. This causes the system to again not boot, even with a fixed GRUB config, as the disk with Ubuntu on is now 0,0. Public bug reported: In this video i list the issues i am having with Effects turned to Extra. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5CTgRhiUkU 1: When a windows is near the top or bottom menus, and has one side out side the screen, it's corners will start to wobble. 2: Tall windows will some times start to jump from the top menu to the bottom menu repetidly. 3: When a window is animating it's visual and clickable area are ofthen not in the same location. 4: Tall windows are hard to move from the bottom to the top or vis versa, as they stick to the othere end. 5: Sometimes windows will jump behind the top menu, leaving the user unable to use the functions found in the title bar of the program (minimise, close, maximize and move), not all users knows that this can also be done from the content menu for the program in the bottom menu. All theas bugs are confirmed (by me) on 7.10, 8.04.1 and 8.10, on two different systems. I'm not sure what my liking would be, I use webmin to controle this box, after the update all the settings in Samba where lost, so i just took 5 min to set it up again (nothing advanced there, just 4 shares). After some furthere experimentation and usage of the system it is clear that this happens when ever i try to boot using the 2.6.27.11 kernel, if i use the 2.6.24.23 kernal (8.04.1) every thing works swimingly, the version number is the only difference in the two enteries on menu.lst. I have tried sudo apt-get purge linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic, sudo apt- get install linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic to no avail. Memtest86+ an Vista changeloader+ works just fine as well. I tried uninstalling linux-image-2.6.24-23-generic and any local/legacy software. Installed linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic, linux-image-2.6.27-9-generic and linux-image-2.6.25-2-386. All 2.6.27-xx failes to boot with the same message. 2.6.25-2 was able to boot but not all the way to the desktop. I have tried running 8.10 live cd inside qemu on the system and that worked resonably well. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I ssh'ed to the users computer and ran the "sudo do-release-upgrade" command to update it from Karmic to Lucid. Once the upgrade was compleat the users cursor was a big fat X and there was no border on the windows. Loogin out of the user account and in to the admin accound showed that the admin had a fully working window manager. Logged back in to the user accound and still no window manager. Went to System->Preferences->Appearance -> Desktop Effects revealed that the Desktop Effects had been changed to 'None' by the upgrade process. Switched it back to normal and now every thing was working. Open arena does not render (just black), quake live works, but if i go in to full screen, the screen is all messed up when i com back (wrong resolution, displayed area is below the bottom of the screen, can't see the top menu bar, screen not rotated. As i remeber it this was the only thing i had running at the time. I first got the one with a password but after confirming it turned in to this. In this case software center still apped as if the program had not been installer, but if i tried to install it again i would get an error as it realy was installer. What part of me already trying to explain this did you not understand? I believe it is because: Outlook uses localized labels for the rows in the CSV file, and Evolution probably only knows the English lables.
