[Bug 2098818] [NEW] Sync xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.18-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2025-02-18 Thread Zixing Liu
Public bug reported:

Please sync xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.18-1 (main) from Debian
unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * d/p/nouveau-fixup-driver-for-new-macro-gating.patch:
fix implicit declarations (LP: #2062144).
  * d/source/format: upgrade to "3.0 (quilt)" format.

Debian included the fix from the upstream in the newer revision.
Ubuntu delta is no longer required.

Changelog entries since current plucky version 1:1.0.17-3ubuntu1:

xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (1:1.0.18-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Team upload.
  * New upstream release (Closes: #1095224).
- Fix implicit declaration of wfbScreenInit (Closes: #1066968).
  * Stop building with DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=qa=-bug-implicit-func
accordingly.
  * Drop patch added in version 1:1.0.17-2, applied upstream.
  * Add Matt Turner's key 16238A7D92448B02B7B10344B6B1CEAE5103DB07 to
debian/upstream/signing-key.asc.
  * Switch to format 3.0 (quilt).
- Drop quilt from Build-Depends and delete debian/README.source.
  * Change Homepage field to https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/.
  * Bump Standards-Version to 4.7.0, no changes needed.

[Bug 2097800] Re: [MIR] libva

2025-02-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package libva is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package libva build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for all Ubuntu architectures
  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libva

  [Rationale]
  - The package libva is required in Ubuntu main for gnome-remote-desktop
  - The package libva will generally be useful for a large part of our user base
  - The package libva is a new runtime dependency of package
gnome-remote-desktop that we already support
  - There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
  - The binary package TBD needs to be in main to achieve keeping
gnome-remote-desktop up-to-date and supported.

  - The package libva is required in Ubuntu main no later than February 20
due to Ubuntu 25.04 Feature Freeze. Practically, we will likely need a
  Feature Freeze Exception for this.

  [Security]
  - Had 1 security issue in the past
  https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2023-39929
  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2023-39929
The CVE is unclear; it might not have affected Ubuntu.

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
+ - Security has been kept in mind and common isolation/risk-mitigation
patterns are in place utilizing the following features:
+ + apparmor profile copied from evince
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).
  - Package does not expose any external endpoints
  - Packages does not contain extensions to security-sensitive software

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does not have
too many, long-term & critical, open bugs
  + Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libva
  + Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libva
  + Upstream https://github.com/intel/libva/issues

  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

[Bug 2097800] Re: [MIR] libva

2025-02-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
libva doesn't have an apparmor profile. I have now removed that line
from the bug description. It was a mistake when copying from a different
MIR.

** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package libva is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package libva build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for all Ubuntu architectures
  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libva

  [Rationale]
  - The package libva is required in Ubuntu main for gnome-remote-desktop
  - The package libva will generally be useful for a large part of our user base
  - The package libva is a new runtime dependency of package
gnome-remote-desktop that we already support
  - There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
  - The binary package TBD needs to be in main to achieve keeping
gnome-remote-desktop up-to-date and supported.

  - The package libva is required in Ubuntu main no later than February 20
due to Ubuntu 25.04 Feature Freeze. Practically, we will likely need a
  Feature Freeze Exception for this.

  [Security]
  - Had 1 security issue in the past
  https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2023-39929
  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2023-39929
The CVE is unclear; it might not have affected Ubuntu.

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
- - Security has been kept in mind and common isolation/risk-mitigation
patterns are in place utilizing the following features:
- + apparmor profile copied from evince
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).
  - Package does not expose any external endpoints
  - Packages does not contain extensions to security-sensitive software

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does not have
too many, long-term & critical, open bugs
  + Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libva
  + Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=libva
  + Upstream https://github.com/intel/libva/issues

  - The package does not deal with exotic hardware we cannot support

  [Quality assurance - testing]
  - The package does not run a test at build time because none is provided
upstream because it is difficult to test hardware accelerated video processing
with build tests.

  - The package does not run an autopkgtest because it is difficult to
test hardware accelerated video processing with autopkgtests.

2025-02-18 Thread 2-axel
With 128.7.0esr I'm still seeing this on macOS, but not anymore on linux
X11 and windows (thank you!)

1) Open Thunderbird 128.7.0esr
2) Click on any message
3) Go offline and wait for CPU to idle
4) Move mouse up and down above list so that messages highlight, without
clicking on anything

macOS 14.4.1: CPU jumps to 100%
Ubuntu 24.04.1 (X11): CPU remains <10%
Windows 10 Pro 22H2: CPU remains <10%

Changing settings for gfx.webrender.force-disabled and
gfx.webrender.software made no difference on macOS.

Thanks Wayne. It was the same without Status Bar. I renamed my Thundbird
settings folder and created a new user profile to record the performance
profile:
https://share.firefox.dev/4gPiw8G

This was on an x64 mac, but the arm64 mac showed the same behaviour.
Thanks a lot for looking into this. It's not nearly as bad as when
originally reported, personally I can live fine with how it is.
Thunderbird is just amazing.

Cheers!

Presently running Thunderbird 128.6.0esr (64-bit) on a Fedora 41
installation, on top of Gnome 47 / Wayland. Different (quite more
modern) hardware than with my previous report #17.

I am still seeing quite heavy CPU load spiking across all 16 cores when
moving the mouse cursor along the e-mail list. For me, the issue seems
to persist.

[Bug 2098828] [NEW] failed to install package linux-headers-6.11.0-17-generic 6.11.0-17.17~24.04.2

This just happened as part of the regular software updates (it just
asked if I wanted to install updates and I clicked OK).

Failed to install new linux-headers version 6.11.0-17, but it set that
version as the default kernel on boot anyway. Now it boots into a black
screen and has to be forcibly powered off if I choose Ubuntu from the
boot menu. I can get back to normal by opening the advanced boot menu
and choosing 6.0.8-52.

[Bug 2097800] Re: [MIR] libva

2025-02-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
#1 Indeed drivers are a runtime requirement but also risk being patent
encumbered. It doesn't feel any different to the status of Nvidia
graphics drivers so please treat it like that - recommended for optimal
experience but not something we are allowed to install by default.

#2 Answered by Jeremy above.

#3 gnome-remote-desktop depends on libva and libva-drm. I assume that's
because hardware accelerated encoding happens in a daemon that is
neither an X11 or Wayland client. Instead it needs the DRM "frontend" to
access the hardware independently of any display server.

#5 I am happy with the test plan because as it says "We are not testing
for driver issues". It would make no sense to require any more specific
Intel GPUs than "at least 5th generation and launched no more recently
than 12 months ago" because it's a moving target and failure to acquire
a specific generation is not a test failure. Nvidia and AMD should be
ignored for testing because neither have ever had respectable Libva
implementations IMHO and I expect those to be failures for their own
reasons. If they work at all then it's a bonus.

#7 Libva is the only performant way to do it on Intel hardware.
Alternative solutions exist like using generic GPU shader code, but such
approaches perform at least one order of magnitude worse than Libva
because Intel QuickSync Video is a dedicated region of the silicon.

With that done and the MIR approved let us also fix the component mismatch.
I do see live-common seed -> ubuntu-x1e-settings which itself needs

But I do not see a dep onto hwe-qcom-x1e-meta.
As it would therefore drop out again let us for now only promote these.

If there is anything missing or wrong or worth to sort out with
hwe-qcom-x1e-meta, comment and set this back to incomplete so we see it in the
MIR meeting.

[Bug 2097727] Re: [MIR] papers

2025-02-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
I finished the vendoring and the test plan so this should be ready for
review now.

** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package papers is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package papers build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for architectures: every Ubuntu release
architecture except for i386 and armhf. armhf is not an Ubuntu Desktop
architecture. There is a Rust toolchain issue on armhf affecting some apps like
papers.

  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/papers

  [Rationale]
There must be a certain level of demand for the package
- - The package papers is required in Ubuntu main for
+ - The package papers is required in Ubuntu main because it is a better
maintained alternative than evince which Ubuntu Desktop has included since the
beginning.
  - The package papers will generally be useful for a large part of our user
base
- - Package papers covers the same use case as evince, but is better because it
is much more actively maintained than evince and GNOME is switching from evince
to papers, thereby we want to replace evince.
+ - Package papers covers the same use case as evince, but is better because it
is much more actively maintained than evince and GNOME is switching from evince
to papers and therefore we want to replace evince.
  - There is no other/better way to solve this that is already in main or
should go universe->main instead of this.
  - The binary package papers needs to be in main to achieve providing the best
maintained and integrated standalone PDF viewer in Ubuntu

  - The package papers is required in Ubuntu main for Ubuntu 25.04.
Obviously it won't make it in before Feature Freeze so we'll file a
  Feature Freeze Exception later.

  [Security]
  - Had multiple security issues in the past
  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/evince
  https://ubuntu.com/security/cve?package=evince

I am linking to evince because papers is a fork of evince.

  - no `suid` or `sgid` binaries
  - no executables in `/sbin` and `/usr/sbin`
  - Package does not install services, timers or recurring jobs
  - Security has been kept in mind and common isolation/risk-mitigation
patterns are in place utilizing the following features:
+ apparmor profile copied from evince
  - Packages does not open privileged ports (ports < 1024).
  - Package does not expose any external endpoints
  - Packages does not contain extensions to security-sensitive software

Papers is expected to be able to frequently parse and view untrusted
PDFs, although poppler is the library that should be doing most of that
  work.

  [Quality assurance - function/usage]
  - The package works well right after install

  [Quality assurance - maintenance]
  - The package is maintained well in Debian/Ubuntu/Upstream and does not have
too many, long-term & critical, open bugs

We're using debhelper compat 13 and aren't doing anything extra with

[Bug 2097727] Re: [MIR] papers

2025-02-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

  [Availability]
The package papers is already in Ubuntu universe.
The package papers build for the architectures it is designed to work on.
It currently builds and works for architectures: every Ubuntu release
architecture except for i386 and armhf. armhf is not an Ubuntu Desktop
architecture. There is a Rust toolchain issue on armhf affecting some apps like
papers.

  Link to package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/papers

  [Rationale]
There must be a certain level of demand for the package
  - The package papers is required in Ubuntu main for
  - The package papers will generally be useful for a large part of our user
base
  - Package papers covers the same use case as evince, but is better because it
is much more actively maintained than evince and GNOME is switching from evince
to papers, thereby we want to replace evince.

  + Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/papers
  + Debian https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?src=papers
  + Upstream https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/Incubator/papers/-/issues

  [Quality assurance - testing]

- TODO-A: it makes the build fail, link to build log TBD

- RULE: please outline why it couldn't provide its value (e.g. by splitting
- RULE: binaries) to users from universe.

2025-02-18 Thread Forrest Flesher
after running LD_DEBUG=all snap list in the previous comment:
grepping for X11, I see that it is used by something called "AppProtection",
which is apparently related to Citrix workspace WFH software (some sort of
anti-screenshot program).
I uninstall Citrix Workspace, and this problem with snap went away.

[Bug 2091719] Re: btrfs will WARN_ON() in btrfs_remove_qgroup() unnecessarily

2025-02-18 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Luca,

I'm sorry for the delay, it seems the Kernel Team have been extraordinarily busy
recently.

The patch has two acks from Senior Kernel Team members:

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2025-February/156888.html
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2025-February/157217.html

We are waiting for it to be applied to the kernel git trees.

There have been a lot of delays to the SRU cycles, so I am not sure if we will
make the 2025.02.10 SRU cycle or if it will be deferred to 2025.03.10. I'll keep
you posted.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 2098808] Re: Gtk-Message: 16:47:23.002: Not loading module "atk-bridge": The functionality is provided by GTK natively. Please try to not load it.

2025-02-18 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thank you!

[Bug 2098777] Re: Intel-microcode 3.20250211.0ubuntu0.20.04.1 causes panic and bootloop on Dell PowerEdge R740xd

2025-02-18 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for reporting this issue - apologies for the inconvenience - I am
a bit confused though since from what I can see the microcode for this
processor was not updated as part of this latest update - can you please
run

apport-collect 2098777

from the affected machine - which should attach additional information
about the machine here.

Otherwise, can you provide the output of the following commands on the
affected system:

lscpu
iucode-tool -S
journalctl -k --grep microcode

Thanks.

[Bug 2098822] Re: [Ubuntu 24.04.01]SR-IOV virtual function interface are not registering after enabling SR-IOV on Broadcom Network Cards

2025-02-18 Thread Michael Reed
Dell has observed the issue on below Broadcom cards:
BCM57414 NetXtreme-E 10Gb/25Gb
BCM57608 10Gb/25Gb/50Gb/100Gb/200Gb/400Gb Ethernet

We have seen same error even after performing below steps
1. Upstream kernel
2. apply Netplan
3. passed intel_iommu=on,sm_on in grub (able to create virtual functions in
lspci but not reflecting in /sys/class/net)

End Result:
echo 4 > /sys/class/net//device/sriov_numvfs command is
getting executed, but
cat /sys/class/net shows no virtual interface created.
In dmesg logs it shows same error for all scenarios as below:
[45183.714317] bnxt_en :46:00.1 eno17305np1: Reject SRIOV config request
since if is down!
[45183.714332] bnxt_en :46:00.1: 4 VFs requested; only 0 enabled

[Bug 2098822] Re: [Ubuntu 24.04.01]SR-IOV virtual function interface are not registering after enabling SR-IOV on Broadcom Network Cards

2025-02-18 Thread Michael Reed
Dell stated the following in response to questions I had:

Here are our observations:

Is this issue seen on other distros? ---> No, observed only on Ubuntu.

Which release and kernel version of Ubuntu is this? ---> Tried on Ubuntu
22.04, 24.04

Did you run these commands as root? ---> Yes, tried with root only,
default user didn't allow to make changes for SRIOV.

Which upstream kernel did you check? ---> All, Issue is seen on all. We were
able to create VFs on RHEL and SLES even though ports are not connected to
network, but not in Ubuntu OS. we got workaround for this and want to know the
reason for this behavior. PFA Screenshot of the link as follows:
https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/storage-and-ethernet-connectivity/ethernet-nic-controllers/bcm957xxx/adapters/Configuration-adapter/sr-iov--configuration-and-use-case-examples.html

What is the idrac and BIOS version? ---> We observed this behavior in
both 16G and 17G Dell PowerEdge servers, which is platform-independent.

[Bug 1993538] Re: [MIR] oem-sutton.bachman-balwina-meta

2025-02-18 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
What's happening here? I see that in https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-
priority/+bug/1993538/comments/6 there should be a ~ubuntu2 upload of
this, but I can't find that, either in the focal queue or in focal-
proposed?

The version that has been verified here is ~ubuntu1, but should that
have been verified?

It's not clear to me what is happening here.

[Bug 2098820] [NEW] Microphone not working - Meteor Lake P - Linux 6.11.0.17

2025-02-18 Thread astroscion
Public bug reported:

The microphone on my DELL Precision 5690 doesn't work after upgrading to
the Linux image 6.11.0-17 from 6.8.0.52 - Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS.

When I go to the audio panel, the microphone seems to be receiving a
saturated signal, and it continuously fluctuates (see video). When I
record, I hear a crackling sound.

This is not the first time this issue has occurred; it happens with
every new kernel since at least the kernel 6.8.0.41.

I tried purging and reinstalling PulseAudio, PipeWire, linux-firmware,
and ubuntu-drivers-common, but it didn't solve the problem. I am unable
to install sof-soundwire.

[Bug 2098413] Re: Bump intel-gmmlib to 22.5.5 in Oracular

2025-02-18 Thread Zixing Liu
> description: updated

SRU changes LGTM. Sponsoring as version 22.5.5-0ubuntu0.24.10.1.

For SRU uploads, we use a special version numbering scheme so that if
users upgrade their system to a new version, they will automatically get
the newer version in the newer release instead of keeping the SRU'ed
version in the older release. You can learn more about how this special
version numbering scheme works here:
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-maintainers-
handbook/blob/main/VersionStrings.md#version-adding-a-change-in-ubuntu-
as-a-stable-release-update.

You will need to wait for the SRU team to process this upload through
the queue.

** Summary changed:

- Bump intel-gmmlib to 22.5.5 in Oracular

[Bug 2098817] [NEW] Wrong dtb assigned for boards "Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.1"

2025-02-18 Thread fprietog
Public bug reported:

Wrong dtb assigned for boards "Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.1"

Tested flash-kernel package in development for plucky, 3.108ubuntu1
version.

The flash kernel database, file /usr/share/flash-kernel/db/all.db,
contains this entry for all Raspberry Pi 5 board revisions:

Machine: Raspberry Pi 5 Model B
Machine: Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev 1.0
Machine: Raspberry Pi 5 Model B Rev *
Kernel-Flavors: raspi raspi-realtime
Method: pi
DTB-Id: bcm2712-rpi-5-b.dtb
U-Boot-Script-Name: bootscr.rpi
Required-Packages: u-boot-tools

But as stated in the Product Change Notes on Revision 1.1 of the
Raspberry Pi 5 Board
(https://pip.raspberrypi.com/categories/1129-pcn/documents/RP-006041-PC/PCN-
Raspberry-Pi-5B-Rev-4.pdf) all Revision 1.1 boards come with BCM2712D0.
So the correct DTB-Id for Rev 1.1. is:

DTB-Id: bcm2712d0-rpi-5-b.dtb

[Bug 2097693] Re: Occasional crashes referencing btcoexist

2025-02-18 Thread Tim Whisonant
I was advised to use the mainline builds for this.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

Let's see if we can determine at a coarse level when this started.

Could you please try the following kernel and let me know if the issue
exists?

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v5.17/amd64/

For reference:

[Bug 2098808] Re: Gtk-Message: 16:47:23.002: Not loading module "atk-bridge": The functionality is provided by GTK natively. Please try to not load it.

2025-02-18 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
