[Bug 2083629] Re: Update fonts-noto-color-emoji to 2.047

2024-11-26 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

  Impact
  ==
-
- Ubuntu has included Google's color emoji font by default for years.
- Annually, the Unicode Consortium releases a new Unicode standard with
- new emoji. Internet communication platforms quickly adopt the new emoji
- and it's important that those emoji also work on the latest Ubuntu
- release.
+ Ubuntu has included Google's color emoji font by default for years. Annually,
the Unicode Consortium releases a new Unicode standard with new emoji. Internet
communication platforms quickly adopt the new emoji and it's important that
those emoji also work on the latest Ubuntu release.

Emojipedia provides a list of the emoji provided by this font.

Click the New link to see the new emoji.
  https://emojipedia.org/google/16.0/

  Or see https://blog.emojipedia.org/google-debuts-emoji-16-0-support/

  More background at https://jenniferdaniel.substack.com/p/breaking-the-
  cycle

  Test Plan
  =
The test plan is outlined on this wiki:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/EmojiFont

  Where problems could occur
  ==
Sometimes there is an issue with the display of a particular font after the
font has been updated. See LP: #2034986 for instance. Perhaps this is a bug
with font caching. In this case, it is not believed that the color emoji font
is used by GNOME Shell itself so a simple restart of any apps that use emoji
should be enough to fix that issue.

This could technically be a User Interface Freeze change, but the new
emoji don't show in the Ubuntu docs or official screenshots. So there
doesn't seem to be a need to notify the Docs team. There are no
translations here so no need to notify the Translations team.

  Other Info
  ==
- There hasn't yet been a stable release of CLDR to match the new Unicode 16
version. Until this happens, we can't update gnome-characters to show the new
emoji. Also, until that happens, emojibase won't update their data which is
used for GTK's emoji choosers. There are some technical details about how those
updates work at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Emoji
+ This update is only for display of the new emoji.

- We will likely do SRUs later for gnome-characters, gtk4 and gtk3 for new
- emoji enablement.
-
- If this isn't accepted before Ubuntu 24.10's release, we will do an SRU
- later.
+ It does not affect gnome-characters, the gtk3 or gtk4 emoji choosers, or
+ any other emoji choosers.

[Bug 2089683] [NEW] Enable to locate package bcmwl-kernel-source Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole

2024-11-26 Thread Thomas Nowicki
Public bug reported:

Hello
When I try to install the package with : ```sudo apt install
bcmwl-kernel-source```
I have the error ```Enable to locate package bcmwl-kernel-source``` I think is
cause the package seems not available for my Ubuntu release (the last one)
Ubuntu 24.10 Oracular Oriole.
Like see in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl

Did I miss something or I just need to wait a new supported package for
24.XX ?

Thanks

[Bug 2089682] Re: wxWidgets crash with GTK3 if console program is using a GUI wxApp class

2024-11-26 Thread Tara Stella
** Description changed:

Some hybrid GUI/console applications, like veracrypt, fail with GLib-
GObject-CRITICAL warning when using the console option when upgrading
  from Ubuntu 20.04 to 24.04.

The discussion about veracrypt is here:
  https://github.com/veracrypt/VeraCrypt/issues/1440

And that relates to this wxWidgets issue:
  https://github.com/wxWidgets/wxWidgets/issues/24081

The problem has been fixed in 3.2.5 in this commit:

https://github.com/wxWidgets/wxWidgets/commit/8ea22b5e92bf46add0b20059f6e39a938858ff97

At the moment, the maintainer of the deb package is statically linking the
3.2.5 library as a workaround.
- But it would be helpful if this would be handled upstream by either bumping
the release to 3.2.5 or backporting the above commit in 3.2.4.
+ But it would be helpful if this would be handled upstream by either bumping
the release to 3.2.5 or backporting the above commit in 3.2.4 in noble/24.04.

  Thanks.
+
+ P.S. I've checked that Oracular onwards should have this fixed already.

[Bug 2089686] [NEW] NET 9 SDK targets NET 8.0.11 for NET 8 projects

2024-11-26 Thread Michał Ziemski
Public bug reported:

WHen using the new NEW 9 SDK for NET 8 projects the compilation targets the
8.0.11 runtime.
So currently without this package NET 9 is unusable for projects not yet
migrated to NET 9 (as only 8.0.10 is available).
Please include 8.0.11 package as soon as possible to remedy the issue.

[Bug 2089699] [NEW] kernel:nft "Could not process rule: Device or resource busy" on unreferenced chain

2024-11-26 Thread Nadia Pinaeva
Public bug reported:

We see some nftables/netfilter problems after kernel upgrade from
5.15.0-1061-gke to 5.15.0-1067-gke.
Correct transaction with nft fails with "Error: Could not process rule: Device
or resource busy"
which usually means a deleted chain is referenced, but you can see it's not.
Full nft table dump + transaction + error is in the attached file.
This is logs from kubernetes CI, which started failing immediately after
mentioned kernel update.

This bug in on all MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI boards with Intel® Killer™

Per "Foundation Team Bug Bot" link i think the bug should be allocated to

(Network: Usual candidate packages are the kernel (file bugs under the "linux"
package) and network-manager.)
Ubuntu version used: 22.04.5
I upgraded the linux-firmware package to 3.36, but it did not help.

[Bug 2066990] Re: openssl fails with out of memory messages while trying to load the FIPS provider in a non-FIPS container on a FIPS host

2024-11-26 Thread Adrien Nader
My plan is to make the library write the following error message when
failing to load a provider (it will apply to any provider):

While loading "fips" provider: error:07880025:common libcrypto
routines::reason(37)

There was already an error but it was silent until it reached the
application which could then assume something inappropriate as we've
seen here.

There are a couple constraints.

First, I'm not loading error strings because I'm changing the inside of
the library and if they haven't been loaded already, the error message
will say "37" rather than "ERR_R_DSO_LIB"/"ERR_LIB_DSO". I plan to work
around that by expanding the title of this bug report so that it's easy
to find with a search engine. (this might also be because I'm relying on
an internal static buffer for formatting because I prefer to avoid
adding memory management in an error path)

The other constraint is that I need to "fprintf(stderr, ..." which is a
bit uncommon for openssl code but I don't want to pop an error from the
error stack like `ERR_print_errors{,_fp}()` does since I'm in the
library code and not in the application code. This means the only API
usable is `ERR_peek_last_error()`. Not a big issue but that makes for
some slightly alien-looking code.

All in all, the output for the `openssl rehash certs` from above will
contain the following text, once per cert found (i.e. 147 times here):

While loading "fips" provider: error:07880025:common libcrypto
routines::reason(37)
out of memory

And I hope that one can copy-paste the new error message in a search
engine and end directly on this page.

Any thought on this before I integrate this? Rough timeline is that I
push that to plucky very soon (tomorrow maybe) and then SRU it in Noble
right after (but SRUs take time and this will probably be a staged
change until a new openssl security update is released).

[Bug 2089693] [NEW] Division by 0 in GDB when printing std::string with custom TBB memory allocator

2024-11-26 Thread Stéphane Perras
Public bug reported:

I wrote a simple C++ application that links with TBB::tbbmalloc.  I have
defined a class called TBBAllocator that implements the std::allocator
archetype, and that calls TBB's scalable_malloc and scalable_free to
deal with memory allocations. Then I have instantiated a
std::string, TBBAllocator>> local variable named
'str', initialized it with "Hello World", and output it through cout.
Given you build the executable with debug information, if you put a
breakpoint on the "cout << str" line and break in gdb, and try to print
the string's value with the command "p str", GDB crashes on a "floating
point exception", but that is really a division by 0 happening in a
function named "val_print_string" in GDB.

If I download GDB 12.1 source code and build it manually, it fixes the
issue. The "p str" command completes successfully and prints all the
fields of the std::string.

If I install GDB from sources using apt, the crash remains, and it is
possible to launch GDB on a second instance of GDB which then debugs the
sample program.

[Bug 2089422] Re: cant add any form of repo or run any installation on terminal

2024-11-26 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for reporting.

Looks like the PPA hasn't published packages for oracular
(https://code.launchpad.net/~kivy-team/+archive/ubuntu/kivy/+packages).
In fact, the latest Ubuntu release it is available on is 23.10 (Mantic).
You may need to contact the PPA team to enable builds for more releases.

FWIW, 2.3.0 is already available in the default Ubuntu repositories
(https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kivy)

[Bug 2089704] [NEW] Incorrect version packaged

2024-11-26 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

Regression spotted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/containerd-
app/+bug/2065423/comments/41

containerd-app in that SRU, and also in oracular and noble currently,
has the package version declaring it's 1.17.9, when in reality the
source tarball is from 2.0.0rc3.

This bug will still be updated with more information as it becomes

[Bug 2089703] [NEW] wslview results in powershell errors due to non-ascii char in script

2024-11-26 Thread Michisteiner
Public bug reported:

Trying to open a URL results in powerpoint errors, e.g.,

# wslview --debug https://www.nzz.ch
[debug] Showing debug output.
The string is missing the terminator: ".
+ CategoryInfo : ParserError: (:) [],
ParentContainsErrorRecordException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : TerminatorExpectedAtEndOfString

The issue seems to be that in function `winps_exec` on line 156 the '-' in
`–ExecutionPolicy Bypass` is not a standard '-' and gets escaped into some
funky way (unicode?). If i replace that with a 'normal' - it works properly

[Bug 2089709] [NEW] Intermittent blank screen after logging in on Ubuntu 24.04 with X11

2024-11-26 Thread bmaupin
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to Ubuntu 24.04. Now whenever I
log in, sometimes I'll get a blank screen. It will only show the mouse
cursor as an X.

The problem seems to be intermittent. So far it's only happened to me
using X11.

My current workaround:

1. Open another terminal (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F6)
2. Restart gdm3 (sudo systemctl restart gdm3)

This seems to be affecting many people, although I couldn't find an
existing bug: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1514757/issue-with-

[Bug 2089713] Re: The processor plugin loads the msr module by default on jammy and focal

** Description changed:

- .
+ [Impact]
+
+ * The 'processor' plugin in sosreport automatically
+loads the 'msr' kernel module in Jammy and Focal,
+when running the 'cpupower' command.
+
+ * Ideally, running sosreport should not modify the
+system state, but rather only collect information,
+unless it is allowed with `--allow-system-changes`.
+
+ * This change (already present in Noble and later)
+checks whether the 'msr' module is loaded to run
+the 'cpupower' command; and if it is not, simply
+emit an informational message about it.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ * Check whether sosreport's processor plugin loads
+the 'msr' module. It should not, with this fix.
+
+$ sudo modprobe -r msr
+$ sudo sos report --batch --only-plugins processor
+$ lsmod | grep msr # expected: nothing
+$
+
+ * Check whether sosreport's processor plugin loads
+the 'msr' module with the '--allow-system-changes'
+option. It _should_, with this fix.
+
+$ sudo modprobe -r msr
+$ sudo sos report --batch --only-plugins processor \
+ --allow-system-changes
+$ lsmod | grep msr # expected: match
+msr <...>
+
+ [ Regression Potential ]
+
+ * This change affects some commands in the processor plugin.
+Such commands might be impacted (e.g., not executed) or
+the entire processor plugin might be impacted (errors).
+Both cases are quick to identify in -proposed testing.
+
+ [ Other Info ]
+
+ * Users might have started to rely on this behavior.
+
+However, this is non-standard behavior in sosreport,
+which already implements the policy 'no system changes'
+unless required with '--allow-system-changes', thus it
+can be considered a bug.
+
+Also, this policy usually provides more benefit than harm
+(and is the expected behavior), specially in systems
+that might be in a compromised state and run sosreport
+for debugging purposes; and modifying the system state
+might cause harm and further compromise/degradation.
