[Bug 2066275] Re: [SRU] Fix black screen on second boot due to video drivers not being ready.
Alright, found the issue. So it seems we ship a custom sddm.service in debian/ and we do not use the provided sddm.service from upstream, and thus my patch has no significance. I have now patched the custom sddm.service file that is shipped. Unfortunately I do not have upload rights here and have asked Rik to please upload the new version. Sorry for any inconvenience. [Bug 2071565] Re: Xorg freeze
I believe this error could be related https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/e248144a-310e-11ef-9e7f-fa163ec44ecd Other crashes seem to be unrelated, however the date from this crash seems a bit earlier than my latest crash. Most often the game causes a freeze and no crash, and hangs the entire desktop environment (KDE) until it closes with no indication of why it closed. The freezes I get usually: Entire desktop goes unresponsive (not just team fortress 2) I swap to tty to kill the process, or wait, and it does close after a while. To kill the process in tty I use 'kill -kill $(pidof tf_linux64)' Randomly it is possible to get the errors after killing the process. I swap back to my X session. [Bug 2065180] Re: performance regression in dracut-install 060
** Description changed: [ Impact ] When compared to Ubuntu 23.10, creating intramfs files with update- initramfs takes 2 to 5 times more time on ARM devices. IIUC, dracut-install usage was added to initramfs-tools to speed up the process. But now its way slower. Even running update-initramfs on jammy, which doesn't use dracut-install, is way faster then the time taken on Noble. first bad commit - https://github.com/dracutdevs/dracut/commit/3de4c7313260fb600507c9b87f780390b874c870 Updating the initrd on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W on Ubuntu 24.04 (noble) with initramfs-tools 0.142ubuntu25.1 takes over six minutes: ``` bdrung@zero2w:~$ sudo hyperfine --warmup 1 -r 10 "update-initramfs -u" Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u - Time (mean ± σ): 402.751 s ± 5.592 s[User: 166.316 s, System: 228.909 s] - Range (min … max): 394.380 s … 411.445 s10 runs + Time (mean ± σ): 402.751 s ± 5.592 s[User: 166.316 s, System: 228.909 s] + Range (min … max): 394.380 s … 411.445 s10 runs ``` [ Test Plan ] 1. Measure `update-initramfs -u` before the update. 2. Log the content of the initrd before the update: `lsinitramfs /boot/initrd.img` 3. update dracut-install / initramfs-tools-core 4. Measure `update-initramfs -u`. It should be faster (the performance improvements on amd64 should be very small and might be within the measurement uncertainty). 5. Check with lsinitramfs that the content of the newly generated initrd hasn't changed. [ Where problems could occur ] The code that is responsible for including the kernel modules into the initrd is touched. Negative consequences could be that some needed kernel modules will not be included any more (should be covered by the test case) or that building new initrds will fail. The initramfs-tools fix changes how manual_add_modules behaves. `manual_add_modules` does not copy kernel modules, but queues them for being copied when the newly added function `apply_add_modules` is called. I checked all instances of calls to `manual_add_modules` for possible regressions (see comment #15). Only miniramfs needs to be adjusted to also call `apply_add_modules`. But this change could break consumers of the `manual_add_modules` function that are outside of the Ubuntu archive. I googled for `apply_add_modules` but found no public outside users. + [ Benchmarks ] + + Stock noble on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W: + + ``` + bdrung@zero2w:~$ sudo hyperfine -r 5 "update-initramfs -u" + Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u + Time (mean ± σ): 415.664 s ± 6.015 s [User: 166.728 s, System: 232.523 s] + Range (min … max): 409.139 s … 422.632 s 5 runs + ``` + [ Other Info ] $ lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available. I could finally reinstall the system: and testing since ~ an hour. No problem, everything is well, running as usually expected. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with full packages installed. Meaning, the visibly no errors -as it can be in the best "ideal case". Since that means the defined conditions of errors are not satisfied by the current interactions of different hardware and the software, issue is closed. It was because of the problematic update from the old system. 23.10 to 24.04. All Hardware is running fine, as there was no material traces of hardware problem. [Bug 2060268] Re: Phantom "Unknown Display" shown in Settings after installing the Nvidia driver
== History == Prior to nvidia 545 the driver did not provide a framebuffer and instead relied on framebuffers from CONFIG_EFI_FB and CONFIG_VESA_FB alike. SimpleDRM (required on a modern Wayland-only system) can also provide a framebuffer (simplefb), and indeed Ubuntu does not use EFI_FB and VESA_FB anymore, relying purely on SimpleDRM to provide a fallback framebuffer. However SimpleDRM also provides a DRM device which creates this phantom display. Since nvidia 545, the driver has gained the capability to provide a framebuffer device, currently opt-in with the option `nvidia- drm.fbdev=1`. Enabling this makes SimpleDRM go away like it would with amdgpu or i915 (*currently racy, see [1]). == Solutions == 1. The first option is to enable fbdev=1 by default, like we do for nvidia-drm.modeset=1. This is still considered to be in test-stage by nvidia, and unfortunately on my Ubuntu machine it breaks any graphical session with bug [2]. NB: somehow this bug does not happen on my Fedora install, where fbdev=1 is already the default. 2. Prior to having the nvidia-drm.fbdev option in Fedora we would instead disable SimpleDRM if-and-only-if the nvidia driver is installed. You may achieve this either by appending `initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init` to the kernel commandline through a package install-time script, or through a patch like [3]. But we are now left with no framebuffer device, so switching VT leaves you with a black screen (imho unacceptable). The solution to that issue is to enable CONFIG_EFI_FB/CONFIG_VESA_FB again so that nvidia systems will keep access to VTs, albeit low-res ones compared to simplefb.
Even running update-initramfs on jammy, which doesn't use dracut-install, is way faster then the time taken on Noble. first bad commit - https://github.com/dracutdevs/dracut/commit/3de4c7313260fb600507c9b87f780390b874c870 Updating the initrd on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W on Ubuntu 24.04 (noble) with initramfs-tools 0.142ubuntu25.1 takes over six minutes: ``` bdrung@zero2w:~$ sudo hyperfine --warmup 1 -r 10 "update-initramfs -u" Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u Time (mean ± σ): 402.751 s ± 5.592 s[User: 166.316 s, System: 228.909 s] Range (min … max): 394.380 s … 411.445 s10 runs ``` [ Test Plan ] 1. [ Benchmarks ] Stock noble on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W: ``` bdrung@zero2w:~$ sudo hyperfine -r 5 "update-initramfs -u" Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u - Time (mean ± σ): 415.664 s ± 6.015 s [User: 166.728 s, System: 232.523 s] - Range (min … max): 409.139 s … 422.632 s 5 runs + Time (mean ± σ): 415.664 s ± 6.015 s [User: 166.728 s, System: 232.523 s] + Range (min … max): 409.139 s … 422.632 s 5 runs + ``` + + noble with dracut-install 060+5-1ubuntu3.1 (with linux 6.8.0-1006.6 on + 2024-07-01): + + ``` + bdrung@zero2w:~$ sudo hyperfine --warmup 1 -r 10 "update-initramfs -u" + Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u + Time (mean ± σ): 248.054 s ± 5.569 s[User: 67.410 s, System: 169.412 s] + Range (min … max): 238.909 s … 257.384 s10 runs ``` [ Other Info ] $ lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available. [Bug 2054222] Re: virtiofsd is no longer installed by default in 24.04 when virt-manager/qemu is installed.
Quick hint from investigating. I installed the librust-virtiofsd-dev and virtiofsd as in 24.04 it is not standard anymore via apt. Still VMs are not working. Problem: for the older VM which had posix=on and flock=on in the virtiofsd section in the XML file I had to remove it --> Solved the issue Problem: virtualfsd cannot write to /var/log/libvirt/qemu Not working: rw right on the /var/log/libvirt/qemu Disabling AppArmor for libvirtd -> reboot -> solved the problem but is only a workaround Still, reason unknown as in the apparmor profile: "libvirtd" the permissions for virtiofsd are good: /usr/{lib,lib64,lib/qemu,libexec}/virtiofsd PUx, is in and should include the new /usr/libexec/virtiofsd as ok to run. As I am not an AppArmor specalist, no glue why this was the issue. I hope my short analysis is helping you as with this I got my machines running -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2054222 Title: virtiofsd is no longer installed by default in 24.04 when virt- manager/qemu is installed. [Bug 2024258] Re: Performance degradation archiving DB with large numbers of FK related records
** Description changed: [Impact] Originally, Nova archives deleted rows in batches consisting of a maximum number of parent rows (max_rows) plus their child rows, all within a single database transaction. This approach limits the maximum value of max_rows that can be specified by the caller due to the potential size of the database transaction it could generate. Additionally, this behavior can cause the cleanup process to frequently encounter the following error: oslo_db.exception.DBError: (pymysql.err.InternalError) (3100, "Error on observer while running replication hook 'before_commit'.") The error arises when the transaction exceeds the group replication transaction size limit, a safeguard implemented to prevent potential MySQL crashes [1]. The default value for this limit is approximately 143MB. [Fix] An upstream commit has changed the logic to archive one parent row and its related child rows in a single database transaction. This change allows operators to choose more predictable values for max_rows and achieve more progress with each invocation of archive_deleted_rows. Additionally, this commit reduces the chances of encountering the issue where the transaction size exceeds the group replication transaction size limit. commit 697fa3c000696da559e52b664c04cbd8d261c037 Author: melanie witt CommitDate: Tue Jun 20 20:04:46 2023 + - database: Archive parent and child rows "trees" one at a time + database: Archive parent and child rows "trees" one at a time [Test Plan] 1. Create an instance and delete it in OpenStack. 2. Log in to the Nova database and confirm that there is an entry with a deleted_at value that is not NULL. select display_name, deleted_at from instances where deleted_at <> 0; 3. Execute the following command, ensuring that the timestamp specified in --before is later than the deleted_at value: nova-manage db archive_deleted_rows --before "XXX-XX-XX XX:XX:XX" --verbose --until-complete 4. Log in to the Nova database again and confirm that the entry has been archived and removed. select display_name, deleted_at from instances where deleted_at <> 0; [Where problems could occur] The commit changes the logic for archiving deleted entries to reduce the size of transactions generated during the operation. If the patch contains errors, it will only impact the archiving of deleted entries and will not affect other functionalities. [1] https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=84785 + + [Original Bug Description] + + Observed downstream in a large scale cluster with constant create/delete + server activity and hundreds of thousands of deleted instances rows. + + Currently, we archive deleted rows in batches of max_rows parents + + their child rows in a single database transaction. Doing it that way + limits how high a value of max_rows can be specified by the caller + because of the size of the database transaction it could generate. + + For example, in a large scale deployment with hundreds of thousands of + deleted rows and constant server creation and deletion activity, a + value of max_rows=1000 might exceed the database's configured maximum + packet size or timeout due to a database deadlock, forcing the operator + to use a much lower max_rows value like 100 or 50. + + And when the operator has e.g. 500,000 deleted instances rows (and + millions of deleted rows total) they are trying to archive, being + forced to use a max_rows value several orders of magnitude lower than + the number of rows they need to archive is a poor user experience and + makes it unclear if archive progress is actually being made. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2024258 Title: Performance degradation archiving DB with large numbers of FK related records To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/2024258/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2071613] Re: gcc-13 fails to build
** Description changed: gcc-13 fails to build. This is blocking the octave transition. plplot needs to migrate for the transition to complete. plplot has gained a dependency on gcc-13 in oracular-proposed. If this is not easily fixable, maybe it would help if gcc-13 were - temporarily removed from -proposed and plplot rebuild to not depend on - the newer gcc-13. + temporarily removed from -proposed and then we rebuild plplot to not + depend on the newer gcc-13. [Bug 1726548] Re: Windows resized after resume
I'm on a newly installed ubuntu 24.04 (assuming Wayland) and gnome- shell, and also have this issue with at least firefox and open office (don't run most of my other apps fullscreen). `gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 1` doesn't seem to help. [Bug 2071471] Re: [UBUNTU 24.04] IOMMU DMA mode changed in kernel config causes massive throughput degradation for PCI-related network workloads
Hi Niklas, thanks for the backgrounds. So to sum it up: The Ubuntu kernel config options for IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_LAZY and IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_STRICT haven't changed since jammy/22.04: 5.15.0-1.1 to 5.15.0-115.125 CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_STRICT=y # CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_LAZY is not set 6.8.0-6.6 to 6.8.0-38.38 CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_STRICT=y # CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_LAZY is not set But with the introduction of c76c067e488c s390/pci: Use dma-iommu layer which moves to a different dma-iommu implementation and 92bce97f0c34 s390/pci: Fix reset of IOMMU software counters (both available since 6.7(rc-1) the IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_LAZY kernel config option should be set to 'yes' by default for s390x. Does CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_STRICT need to be set to No on top? I don't think so - if lazy is 'yes'. So I believe we can go with 'IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_LAZY=y' for s390x only and should be good again. I assume that such situations happen not very often, so it would be ideal if IBM could give us a quick heads-up in such cases (where a kernel config default value for s390x is changed upstream), so that we can double check and potentially take over changes into the Ubuntu config by hand. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2071471 Title: [UBUNTU 24.04] IOMMU DMA mode changed in kernel config causes massive throughput degradation for PCI-related network workloads To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-z-systems/+bug/2071471/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2065180] Re: performance regression in dracut-install 060
There is another performance improvement upstream: https://github.com/dracut-ng/dracut-ng/pull/408 I tested this change a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W, but it had no measurable performance improvement: ``` $ sudo hyperfine --warmup 1 -r 10 "update-initramfs -u" Benchmark 1: update-initramfs -u Time (mean ± σ): 249.595 s ± 7.243 s[User: 66.584 s, System: 170.342 s] Range (min … max): 240.879 s … 260.506 s10 runs ``` Dave, can you test dracut 060+5-1ubuntu3.2~ppa1 from https://launchpad.net/~bdrung/+archive/ubuntu/ppa to see if that would improve the situation on the other Pis? [Bug 1726548] Re: Windows resized after resume
Maybe mine is completely different, since its the whole screen resolution that changes. In my case its msm as driver (Adreno 690), where dp link issues are aready confirmed and it's worked on. Still, I have the hpd pin disabled, and it mitigates the behaviour. There are some other odd issues. If I extend the screen resolution to 4k@60, the longer suspend / resume will deliver a blue screen (how fitting), unrecoverable. If I set the resolution to 2k (2560x1440@60) it will resume without lots of fuss. Sometimes the Display Power off is not permanent, but screen doesn't come up completely (only backlight is on). This is the same on XOrg and Wayland, but reducing resolution appears to mitigate the issue. For me it looks like some race condition that interrupts dpu / dp setup and operation, but its hard to debug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1726548 Title: Windows resized after resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-gnome-meta/+bug/1726548/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2071486] Re: intel-vsc-dkms FTBS on jammy with the latest 6.8 hwe kernel
Please amend the Test Plan to make it clear that testing both the GA and HWE kernels is required. I expect to see this in the Test Plan for every HWE backport fix (and if it's not required then an explanation as to why). I understand that I could just do this myself but it feels like every time I look at an HWE backport fix this isn't in the Test Plan, so I'm pushing back now to get this done properly from the beginning. Here's at least part of the problem. commit 15c983d0cbb5a158eafb9cb88e6d8dfc4477d9c2 Author: Melissa Wen Date: Fri Dec 29 15:25:00 2023 -0100 drm/amd/display: fix bandwidth validation failure on DCN 2.1 BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2059068 commit 3a0fa3bc245ef92838a8296e0055569b8dff94c4 upstream. IGT `amdgpu/amd_color/crtc-lut-accuracy` fails right at the beginning of the test execution, during atomic check, because DC rejects the bandwidth state for a fb sizing 64x64. In either case, if the read addressed a device below a bridge, it is logged by setting "Received Master Abort" in the bridge Secondary Status register. Clear any errors logged in the Secondary Status register after enumeration. ** Affects: linux-nvidia (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2071654 Title: PR for: "PCI: Clear Secondary Status errors after enumeration" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-nvidia/+bug/2071654/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2071655] [NEW] PR for: "IB/mlx5: Use __iowrite64_copy() for write combining stores"
Public bug reported: mlx5 has a built in self-test at driver startup to evaluate if the platform supports write combining to generate a 64 byte PCIe TLP or not. This has proven necessary because a lot of common scenarios end up with broken write combining (especially inside virtual machines) and there is other way to learn this information. This self test has been consistently failing on new ARM64 CPU designs (specifically with NVIDIA Grace's implementation of Neoverse V2). The C loop around writeq() generates some pretty terrible ARM64 assembly, but historically this has worked on a lot of existing ARM64 CPUs till now. We see it succeed about 1 time in 10,000 on the worst effected systems. The CPU architects speculate that the load instructions interspersed with the stores makes the WC buffers statistically flush too often and thus the generation of large TLPs becomes infrequent. This makes the boot up test unreliable in that it indicates no write-combining, however userspace would be fine since it uses a ST4 instruction. Further, S390 has similar issues where only the special zpci_memcpy_toio() will actually generate large TLPs, and the open coded loop does not trigger it at all. Fix both ARM64 and S390 by switching to __iowrite64_copy() which now provides architecture specific variants that have a high change of generating a large TLP with write combining. x86 continues to use a similar writeq loop in the generate __iowrite64_copy(). ** Affects: linux-nvidia (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2071655 Title: PR for: "IB/mlx5: Use __iowrite64_copy() for write combining stores" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-nvidia/+bug/2071655/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2070020] Re: Lenovo dock no longer working after upgrade from 6.5.0-35 to 6.5.0-41
I don't know if it's the same issue; but there is another relatively similar issue that occurred very recently: bug #2070096 As I mentioned there, this commit is at least PART of the problem: commit 15c983d0cbb5a158eafb9cb88e6d8dfc4477d9c2 Author: Melissa Wen Date: Fri Dec 29 15:25:00 2023 -0100 drm/amd/display: fix bandwidth validation failure on DCN 2.1 BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2059068 commit 3a0fa3bc245ef92838a8296e0055569b8dff94c4 upstream. IGT `amdgpu/amd_color/crtc-lut-accuracy` fails right at the beginning of the test execution, during atomic check, because DC rejects the bandwidth state for a fb sizing 64x64. The test was previously working with the deprecated dc_commit_state(). Now using dc_validate_with_context() approach, the atomic check needs to perform a full state validation. Therefore, set fast_validation to false in the dc_validate_global_state call for atomic check.
