[Bug 1827452] Re: null pointer dereference in uvcvideo

2020-11-15 Thread John Boero
Update again.
The kernel maintainers have been helpful but prefer NULL checking to be done in
the drivers, not in the kernel. I've explored further with some test builds
and it turns out the NULL is actually on the dev config interfaces (usb.c:281
current line). During initialization the Logitech C920 sometimes
unplugs/deactivates itself. Apparently many Logitech models do this if you
search the issue - Windows included. Shame to have such a great quality camera
paired with such subpar firmware.

Anyway I'm trying fix uvc_driver.c to verify devices are still plugged
in before calling usb_ifnum_to_if. It won't fix webcams or devices that
unplug themselves (or get unplugged) during initialization but it will
protect the USB subsystem so you can plug it back in again.

[Bug 1897153] Re: Automount fails due to SSSD config (Groovy Gorilla)

2020-11-15 Thread Pelle Rivberg
Ahoy!

Another 20.10 Groovy user here who had to update from 20.04.1LTS to
20.10 because my soundcard stopped working. Well, the sound card works
now, but I get those same exact SSSD errors and I think the whole thing
was installed upon update -- at least I didn't get those errors on my
20.04.1LTS.

The only contents of my /etc/sssd is a 'conf.d' subdirectory ( '
/etc/sssd/conf.d/ ' ), which is empty.

Please let me know if there's a workaround or a solution, thanks.

Same again, when I updated my Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS, sometimes when I switch
on my PC, I lose one of my outputs of audio. For example, I switch on
the PC and the HDMI DisplayPort2 GP102 Audio Contoller doesn't appear in

I need to reboot the PC and sometings if you have good luck it appears

[Bug 1897395] Re: Ubuntu Crash constanly after last patch update

2020-11-15 Thread Víctor
I think that the problem is that 32 bit architecture is not enabled by default
in Ubuntu 20.04.
Steam uses 32 bit libraries, for that, it crashes randomly.

After use this command and update Ubuntu with last updates, the system is more
solid and is not crashing all the time:
dpkg --add-architecture i386; apt update

This solved my problem.

Wayne, as I wrote several times over several years at several places in this
bug tracker:
The problem is easily reproducible, also on Linux, with any TB version
(meanwhile including 78.4.2.).
Why is there apparently not a single TB developer trying this himself?

Again: just enter an IP address such as 1.2.3.4 as the server name/address.
Then try fetching emails. Until this timeouts,
the progress bar moves forth and back with significant CPU load (10% of one
core on my current Linux machine).

Ensure fip ip rules deleted when fip removed

The information needed to delete ip rules associated
with fips is held in memory between add and remove so
a restart of the l3-agent results in any fips that
existed before the restart having their ip rules
persist after the fips are removed. This patch
enures that an agent restart reloads this information
so that ip rules associated with a fip are correctly
removed when the fip is removed.

I assume by the 2 lines you mean

ptrace (trace) peer=@{profile_name},
@{HOME}/.mozilla/firefox/*/gmp-widevinecdm/*/lib*so m,

from the bug report. Neither of these lines would allow malware to
write to that location. However they do provide some danger.

The first rule allow firefox to ptrace it self, this could potentially
be exploited by injected shell code to further take control of firefox
if say the code gains control of the render process. It won't however
allow removing confinement or attacking other processes the user might
be running.

The second rule allows firefox to load and run code from that location.
But doesn't allow firefox to write to it. So if there is malware on the
system that can write to that location it could have firefox run it.
But if something manages to hack/inject code into firefox it won't be
able to put code there. Dealing with this in apparmor comes down to
making sure the rest of the system confinement is correct, preventing
said malware from writing to that location. Or you could potentially
use IMA to further restrict and only allow signed files from this
location.

The reason this is more dangerous than allowing /lib/*.so or other
system locations is the users home directory can be written by other
processes run by the user. And on most systems, most user processes
are running unconfined hence malware that exists on the system and
isn't confined could write to it.

Again this isn't some much a problem with having the rule in the
apparmor profile but have sufficient policy on the system.

Re: [Bug 1891324] Re: Groovy Gorilla GRUB won't install to MBR

2020-11-15 Thread cwsnyder
Most computers built in the last 10 years use EFI firmware, which does
not use an MBR, instead using GPT formatting and a boot partition for
all but the smallest of drives. I didn't detect the problem in the
early daily builds when I initially installed Groovy, only when I
re-installed at the beta.

[Bug 1904321] [NEW] does not work as it should " systemctl edit service"

2020-11-15 Thread erzent
Public bug reported:

1. `systemctl edit service(elasticsearch)`
That creates file `/etc/systemd/system/elasticsearch.service.d/override.conf`

And I've added following section there:

[Service]
LimitMEMLOCK=infinity
LimitNPROC=32768
LimitNOFILE=25

3. I've executed `systemctl daemon-reload; systemctl stop elasticsearch;
systemctl start elasticsearch`

However those parameters were not applied to a newly started service and
I got an error "memory locking requested for elasticsearch process but
memory is not locked".

To workaround I've created a file
`/etc/systemd/system/elasticsearch.service.d/elasticsearch.conf` with
the same content and that fixed the problem.

Having the very same issue in 20.10 Groovy Gorilla, after updating from

so on.)

Inside my /etc/sssd , there is only a sub-directory /etc/sssd/conf.d/ ,
which is empty.

It seems that I can remove 'sssd' and its associated components with a
simple apt purge/remove -command, but I'd like to know if that is
compromising system security to do so. Then again, it's not working as

[Bug 1848326] Re: [cosmic+] error booting with prime-select intel: prime-select does not update initramfs to blacklist nvidia modules

2020-11-15 Thread Alonso
I'm facing the same problem with Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and GeForce 310M,
using an old Samsung QX310.

Without these drivers, the preinstalled intel driver works fine.
But with "prime-select intel" I boot into a black screen.

To go back into the DE, first I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F4 and then input
my login and password. Sometimes it takes a few tries. I hope this helps
others, so that booting into recovery mode is not needed.

[Bug 1904323] [NEW] gnome-terminal resized and moved after resume

2020-11-15 Thread Andrei Borzenkov
Public bug reported:

GNOME desktop with Wayland, Dell E5450 notebook using iGPU (Intel). dGPU
(nVidia) is present but never used. No proprietary drivers. Both eDP and
HDMI are connected to Intel.

I usually have several gnome-terminal windows open. After the following

- connect TV using HDMI
- suspend notebook (close lid)
- open lid, notebook resumed

all opened gnome-terminal windows are resized (so far always smaller
size) and moved on screen to different position.

I had similar effects also in 16.04 and 18.04 under X11/Unity (and also
in 20.04 before switching to GNOME/Wayland).

I am happy to provide any additional/debugging information if anyone
explains what is necessary.

[Bug 1887294] Re: [nvidia] Display freeze and kernel crash on GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

2020-11-15 Thread fa2k
I don't know how clear it was before, but it's the same for me -- it
happens when I connect or disconnect a monitor. It's a TV screen, and
doesn't turn off automatically, so I make it turn on and off (using an
RS232-based protocol over a separate cable). When turned off, the TV
appears as disconnected from the computer, the desktop layout changes,
etc.

The problem happens whether or not I have another, normal monitor
connected.

One difference is that it won't actually shut down if I issue the
shutdown command over SSH (or press the power button), it starts the
shutdown process but then hangs.

This should be a pretty normal use case for laptops, so I'm surprised
that not more people see it. Maybe it appears on desktop GPUs only, or
that it resets when the computer is suspended (as would often happen
after disconnecting a monitor laptops).

[Bug 1777070] Re: firefox plugin libwidevinecdm.so crashes due to apparmor denial

2020-11-15 Thread Christian Boltz
> The second rule allows firefox to load and run code from that location.

That's correct for the added rule, but the profile also has

owner @{HOME}/.{firefox,mozilla}/** rw,

which means firefox _can_ write to that location.

However, this doesn't make the new rule for @{HOME}/.mozilla/firefox
/*/gmp-widevinecdm/*/lib*so m, too bad because the profile also allows m
for plugins already.

owner @{HOME}/.{firefox,mozilla}/plugins/** rm,
owner @{HOME}/.{firefox,mozilla}/**/plugins/** rm,

which already allows to run code from more writeable locations.

[Bug 1891324] Re: Groovy Gorilla GRUB won't install to MBR

2020-11-15 Thread Gerald Rozner
In my particular case, my motherboard is EFI but can boot legacy or MBR.
I built it in 2013. Its an Asus Z77 and at this time has 7 SSD's for
testing different OS's. It has a bug whereby if one uses GPT EFI boot
and I move the cables to another drive for testing the EFI drive will no
longer boot. There are no more EFI firmware updates. There is no issue
for legacy boot. So all drives are partitioned MBR except Ubuntu 20.10.
I didn't even know about the bios-boot partition and GPT until
installing 20.10 and I saw the three partitions. That's when I manually
tried to partition it MBR which 9 out of 10 times comes up with a
warning about not booting and the drive is partitioned GPT. Once in a
while there will be a warning but it will remain MBR but after
completion it will boot but not complete loading the OS. I suspect most
people don't even know about the bug and have not reported it because
they just let Ubuntu format the drive automatically. If they're using
legacy boot and don't examine the partitions they have no idea how it
was partitioned.

[Bug 1904326] [NEW] During discovery, non-critical error occurs

2020-11-15 Thread emk2203
Public bug reported:

During discovery with `pulseaudio-dlna --create-device-config`, I get
the following non-critical error:

```bash
Exception in thread Thread-10:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python3.8/threading.py", line 932, in _bootstrap_inner
self.run()
  File "/usr/lib/python3.8/threading.py", line 1254, in run
self.function(*self.args, **self.kwargs)
TypeError: 'ServiceBrowser' object is not callable
```

Program plays music as expected with pulseaudio-dlna.

System is Kubuntu 21.04 (basically identical to 20.10 at the moment).
pulseaudio-dlna was installed from the official Ubuntu repo.

Version: pulseaudio-dlna 0.5.3+git20200329-0.1

Bug was reported upstream as well, but is maybe better fixed here.

[Bug 838381] Re: The cursor in active terminal window stops blinking after ten seconds.

2020-11-15 Thread Steve Stevenson
Taking a second look at my workaround, I realize now that the "Settings
Editor" is actually xfce4-settings-editor so this presumably only
applies to Xubuntu or a system which otherwise has xfce as the desktop
environment.

[Bug 838381] Re: The cursor in active terminal window stops blinking after ten seconds.

2020-11-15 Thread Steve Stevenson
I thought I would add the workaround I found which applies to Xubuntu
18.04 but possibly others:

To make the cursor keep blinking in GTK-based applications (which
includes gnome-terminal, xfce4-terminal, gedit, pidgin and many others):

1. Open Settings Editor from the Settings menu.
2. Select the xsettings "channel" on the left side of the interface.
3. Click New.
4. The name of the property needs to be /Gtk/CursorBlinkTimeout
5. Set it to be an integer property.
6. Specify a very large number (but less than 2 billion).
7. Click Save

Here's hoping the GNOME group somehow ceases to exist in the near
future.

[Bug 1893753] Re: libnginx-mod-http-lua 0.10.11 not compatible with NGINX 1.18/1.17

2020-11-15 Thread Anton Tolchanov
Because of this issue libnginx-mod-http-lua is completely broken in
several versions of Ubuntu.

Upgrading lua-nginx-module to 0.10.15 fixes the issue, and I have suggested two
patches that would make libnginx-mod-http-lua usable again:
- hirsuite:
https://code.launchpad.net/~knyar/ubuntu/+source/nginx/+git/nginx/+merge/393789
- focal:
https://code.launchpad.net/~knyar/ubuntu/+source/nginx/+git/nginx/+merge/393790

Note that the latest version of lua-nginx-module is 0.10.19, however
upgrading to it is more tricky than upgrading to 0.10.15. Beginning at
version 0.10.16, lua-nginx-module requires the lua-resty-core library
(https://github.com/openresty/lua-resty-core) to be available, and I
have not been able to find it packaged in Ubuntu. There are several
options on how to package that lua library (either as a separate Ubuntu
package, or together with libnginx-mod-http-lua), which is probably
something that Ubuntu nginx maintainers should decide.

Seems to be a bug in libunityshell or in some compiz plugin.

Best way to replicate is to install `joystick` and run `ffmvforce test`
(or real force feedback device if you have one plugged in), now the
desktop crashes. Sometimes other programs (especially if they’re run
with Wine) present this behavior. I’ve also tried on liveusb on both
Intel and Amd machines with the same result.

[Bug 1903883] Re: XPS 13 9310 Tiger Lake Unable to boot 20.10 after intel-microcode update 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.10.1

2020-11-15 Thread Pierre
I've been struck by the exact same bug on a Core m3-6Y30 (affecting
Ubuntu 20.04 but also 18.04 with corresponding package) all the same
after updating to the 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.1 version.

The 3.20201110.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 fix is not helping. I have to keep the
3.20200609.0ubuntu0.20.04.2 to avoid being stuck at "Loading initial
ramdisk".

Not too sure how I should report this considering all the open reports
on the launchpad page: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-
microcode

[Bug 1901137] Re: UEFI on Legacy - grub-install fails due to no space left on ESP

2020-11-15 Thread florin
I managed to run 20.10 after connecting to that installation from my
other running Ubuntu with chroot, installing net-tools (seemed to be
missing for some reason so I had no ifconfig) and then update + upgrade.
There was a kernel update and grub found what it needed to be able to
boot also 20.10.

[Bug 1713650] Re: Can't Alt+drag windows at all any more

2020-11-15 Thread Coenraad Loubser
Gnome now differs from every single other window manager. I understand
that alt+drag interferes with some former mac users' workflows, but
really, we've been here for 20 years and they just arrived... why should
we change our workflows to suit theirs?

Can we please revert to the default, and make this a tick-box option
upon installation, or in keyboard settings? (Ie. "Do you use . names
of applications " or even better, put the option in those
applications.

Can anyone link to where Gnome made this decision?

TLDR: it's super frustrating that Gnome now has a different default
shortcut key from every single other window manager.

[Bug 1904343] [NEW] WiFi Working, Wired connection not.

2020-11-15 Thread John McLovin
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I wanted to move from Windows 10 to Linux (again) but I had
bad luck I guess with the network-manager and its current version.

My WiFi is working without any problems but the Ethernet (wired
connection) is not working. Tried (installed and fully updated) Pop OS
20.10, Kubuntu 20.10, KDE Neon based on 20.04 same problem on all of
them. Not working from Live USB too. Went back to Windows 10 -
everything works without any problems.

Tried some debugging: taking out the cable and plugging it back. No luck.
Restarting the laptop - not working.

Laptop model Acer ES1-512 if it matters.
acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/5611;-;Aspire%20ES1-512

On network, I have Broadcom and Atheros - not sure which one is for the
ethernet.

P.S: Whine Kubuntu was loading (the text window) I saw with red Failed -
network manager online or something like that, can't really remember the
whole thing.

[Bug 1904347] [NEW] failed to install grub to /dev/sda

2020-11-15 Thread Leandro Galliano
Public bug reported:

I am trying to install Ubuntu Studio to my empty SSHD. The problem is
that I don't understand very well how to prepare the partition table,
initially, I use to do this, as MBR:

/dev/sda1 EFI 1024Mb
/dev/sda2 swap 2048Mb

Then I tried:

/dev/sda1 EFI 1024Mb
/dev/sda2 swap 2048Mb
/dev/sda3 /boot 2048Mb
/dev/sda4 /

And finally, restarted and clicked on the "Erase disk and install Ubuntu"
option, but still getting the same error: "executing grub install /dev/sda

I use to format the entire Solid Hard Drive with Parted Magic before

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-11-15 Thread Mike Boruta
@Coiby Xu (coiby)

It seems that the patch in 171 does not work (i.e. touchpad is still
dead) on kernels older than 5.8. I tried 5.4.75, 5.7.19, and 5.8.18. I
don't really want to look into this further since I'm fine with the
newer kernel, but wanted to give you and any other users a heads up in
case they find themselves in a similar situation. The kernels I was
testing were taken straight from Ubuntu's mainline kernel page, and had
only the following changes: CONFIG_PINCTRL_AMD was made into a module,
specified line in pinctrl-amd.c was commented out.

Thanks again for all of your help in making the linux experience with
this class of laptop much more enjoyable!

[Bug 1818918] Re: gdb doesn't search in debug-file-directory for .gnu_debugaltlink

2020-11-15 Thread Tiago Stürmer Daitx
@sergiodj many thanks for the help here

It was a dwz man page somewhere that made me think we might be misusing
.gnu_debugaltlink somehow (didn't even know about dh_dwz), but on a
quick search I couldn't understand how the path was supposed to look
like so I could test that idea with my replace-altlink-section-hack.

And if GDB can support looking for .dwz on the debug-file-drectory even
with hardcoded paths, all the better.

Many, many thanks for taking the time to look at this and come up with
these 2 solutions. We really appreciate it.

[Bug 1904351] [NEW] gnome-sound-recorder's "export" dialog disappears suddendly, without intervention.

2020-11-15 Thread Sergio Costas
Public bug reported:

When the "export" file dialog is shown (after pressing the "Export"
button), it disappears suddenly after a few seconds, without user
intervention.

HOW TO REPRODUCE IT:

- Launch gnome-sound-recorder
- Record some sound
- Press the STOP button to end recording
- Press the "OK" button to confirm the recording
- Press the "Export" button; a file dialog will be shown
- Wait

After a variable number of seconds (between two and ten), the dialog
will close suddenly, without user intervention. It should last until the
user chooses a file, or press cancel.

It seems a problem with the garbage collector, because the file selector
widget is stored in a local variable. Storing it in a property of the
object seems to fix it (patch attached).

[Bug 576602] Re: Fancontrol relies on the module load order

2020-11-15 Thread Ronny Svedman
This affects me too on Asus z97P, since at least ubuntu 13.10 (when I bought
this system). I sometimes hear fans not spin down after booting, and have been
"rebooting until success" for the last 7 years... lucky it isnt too often I get
the wrong order, maybe once in 10 boots or so. Since adding a new GPU recently
made this problem worse, and I needed the it87 driver compiled from unofficial
sources to support my board (IT8606 chip) in 20.04, I stumbled on this bug via
the lm-sensors github.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1902352] Re: apt-get -u upgrade yields "-bash: /usr/bin/snap: No such file or directory"

2020-11-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Clearly there's a shell script somewhere running 'snap'...

Please run this command to check those other files:

  grep -r snap /etc/apt/apt.conf.d

and tell us if you get any results. Also, just to be sure, please purge
snapd:

  sudo apt purge snapd

and then reboot. That will remove any more such leftover config files.
