[Bug 1884514] Re: [20.10 FEAT] zlib/gzip hardware compression enablement
** Description changed: + [Feature Freeze Exception] + + 1. Feature: + + The latest s390x hardware comes with a new concept for hardware assisted + compression/decompression, based on a 'Next Accelerator Function unit' + (NXU). This is an on-chip concept, a co-processor for compression + available to all cores on the same chip. It provides functions as normal + 'problem state' instructions (in other words user space instructions + that are directly consumable by libraries and applications) and supports + DEFLATE compliant compression/decompression + GZIP CRC/ZLIB Adler. + + To enable this hardware support for zlib and gzip, zlib needs to be compiled with CFLAGS="-O2 -DDFLTCC -DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e". + The value of 0x7e enables hardware compression for the compression levels 1-6 (out of 0-9). + There is a significant business value of having the enablement active by default, since tests on a system with 4 IFLs and hardware compression enabled this way offered (especially for DEFLATE as best case) a speed up of more than 40x. + + 2. Changes + + Adding CFLAGS="-O2 -DDFLTCC -DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e" attributes/macro + during build of zlib and gzip. + + 3. Regression risk + + The concept is new and comes with IBM z15 and LinuxONE III only and is with that specific and limited to s390x. + Hence a potential regressions of this late addition would be limited to s390x and there again with the above changes to zlib (and gzip). + In case of unforeseen issues with the NXU hardware component, a fallback to software is done. + On top a modified zlib package was build and made available in a PPA for further testing. + This change should have been included earlier, but was blocked by other zlib tickets/bugs that needed to be fixed and integrated first (like LP 1893170), hence this request for late addition. + __ + HW Compression need to be enabled with Default-Compression-Level 6. - Adding following CFLAGS attributes during build of zlib and gzip - "-DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e" - + Adding following CFLAGS attributes during build of zlib and gzip + "-DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e" CFLAGS="-O2 -DDFLTCC -DDFLTCC_LEVEL_MASK=0x7e" ./configure -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1884514 Title: [20.10 FEAT] zlib/gzip hardware compression enablement To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-z-systems/+bug/1884514/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1896885] Re: Please add Finnish translation for gnome-flashback
Hi Alberts! Thank you, I just want to make sure these translations get to users as soon as possible, as some new users are starting to use the flashback session. Groovy wouldn't be needed otherwise but the general rule is devel first, so I did an upload there first. My uploads can be safely simply ignored/overridden when next upstream releases are released and uploaded, and I also made a comment like so in debian/rules where I run update-gmo (that only touches that one new translation). I'm adding bionic since it's supported until 2023, and I know some people who are likely continuing to use it until then. Test builds were done at https://launchpad.net/~timo- jyrinki/+archive/ubuntu/yetanotherppa1/+packages and tested from there before uploading. ** Changed in: gnome-flashback (Ubuntu Bionic) Status: New => Fix Committed ** Changed in: gnome-flashback (Ubuntu Focal) Status: New => Fix Committed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896885 Title: Please add Finnish translation for gnome-flashback To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-flashback/+bug/1896885/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1896904] [NEW] Intel 9560 WLAN (8086:9df0) producing computer hanging and wifi breakdown
Public bug reported: If I do video conferences for example my wifi breaks down. I'm preety sure the it happens since I updated my WiFi router (FritzBox 7590 to Firmware 7.20). I was in contact with the manufacturer. They don't know any problems. I checked dmesg and saw a lot of error messages. So i thought I should report a bug here. Some times WiFi breaks down and comes up again after a few seconds, sometimes it will not come back and I have to restart the computer. Sometimes I can't even turn of WiFi in the Ubuntu menu. Settings telling me something link "network manager not available" (not sure what the exact message is). All firmware updates are installed, I updated to the latest kernel and had the problem again. The logs generated with "ubuntu-bug linux" in this ticket are with symptom "recovers after some seconds" with massive hanging of hole Ubuntu (was not able to move mouse / press strg+alt+t to open terminal). Before I learned how to generate proper logs I saved output of dmesg. I will append some of this to this ticket. There are different error messages. Some without recovering. I will append more proper generated logs (ubuntu-bug linux) to this ticket if I get similar problems and if you would like to see them. Actually no. It builds and does not have any downsides, but does not resolve the issue. Sorry for that. When I looked at the history of cpu_map and this patch, I did not see that it would require further patches to actually make it work. So that would leave it at these four patches: Add-pschange-mc-no-bit-in-IA32_ARCH_CAPABILITIES-MSR.patch Request-test-files-update-when-adding-x86-features.patch Add-missing-x86-features-in-0x7-CPUID-leaf.patch Add-missing-x86-features-in-0x8008-CPUID-leaf.patch Add-missing-AMD-SVM-features.patch Plus the patch adding the EPYC-Rome model. I'll try to get it upstream, but it will take some time. From my side, it's totally fine from my side to go ahead with the update without it. [Bug 1896919] Re: [SRU] g-c-c: The hdmi/dp profiles are not set automatically in the combo list after selecting the hdmi/dp audio in the g-c-c
This is the debdiff for focal. thx. ** Tags added: oem-priority originate-from-1892168 somerville ** Description changed: - This is for tracking purpose. + [Impact] + After we plugging a hdmi/dp monitor with audio capability, we could + select hdmi audio as output device in the g-c-c, but after we do + that, the profile combo list will show up in the g-c-c and this combo + list is empty, it should be stereo-hdmi by default according to 18.04 + + [Fix] + Backport a fix from g-c-c upstream, after applying this patch, the + combo list update signals will be recevied after the pa finishes the + changing active profile. + + [Test Case] + Plug the hdmi/dp monitor with audio capability, then choose hdmi audio + as active output device from g-c-c, we will find the profile combo list + has hdmi-steoreo as the default profile. This is same as 18.04. + + [Regression Risk] + It is possible to make the output and input device can't work after + applying this patch, that is because the active profile is not set as + our expected. [Bug 1896604] Re: Groovy kernel (5.8.0-1004-aws) creates broken /dev/console on i3.metal instances
The reason of this problem is that in 5.8 the default amount of nr_uarts has been changed from 4 to 32. This is causing ttyS0 to be remapped to ttyS4, breaking the user-space. The solution is to set back the number of UARTS to 4. I tried to boot the kernel adding 8250.nr_uarts=4 to the kernel boot parameters in GRUB and /dev/console is now working correctly. [Bug 1896804] Re: CD/DVD drive detected as read only, command line and GUI programs
Hi, > Sense Key 6 "Drive event", ASC 28 ASCQ 81. This SCSI error reply is not listed in SCSI specs SPC or MMC or in the summary of T10 committee https://www.t10.org/lists/asc-num.htm#ASC_28 So the drive's firmware programmers were overly creative. If it was ASCQ 0 or 2, then libburn would tolerate it: 6 28 00 NOT READY TO READY CHANGE, MEDIUM MAY HAVE CHANGED 6 28 02 FORMAT-LAYER MAY HAVE CHANGED but the other ASCQs of ASC 28 were too obscure to me to be tolerable. I now made a GNU xorriso tarball with a libburn which tolerates any Drive event error with ASC 28 so that you can drill deeper into the drive behavior. (I have to think whether this change is good as permanent solution. The list of key 6 errors looks in part fatal like 6 29 00 POWER ON, RESET, OR BUS DEVICE RESET OCCURRED 6 3B 0F END OF MEDIUM REACHED but in part retryable. My program change relies on the hope that all ASC 28 codes are harmless.) You will need the dependency packages of pseudo-package "build-essential" https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/build-essential then download https://www.gnu.org/software/xorriso/xorriso-1.5.3.tar.gz and copy it to a directory of your choice, e.g. to /home/chris/xorriso Then build it by cd /home/chris/xorriso tar xzf xorriso-1.5.3.tar.gz cd xorriso-1.5.3 ./configure --prefix=/usr && make On a modern machine the "make" part should be done in half a minute. Afterwards there should be an executable program ./xorriso/xorriso You may use it in place by its relative address ./xorriso/xorriso -outdev /dev/sr0 -toc or by its absolute address /home/chris/xorriso/xorriso-1.5.3/xorriso/xorriso Your Ubuntu xorriso will stay installed and your package manager cannot get confused by the newly made xorriso. (It is quite large because it contains own copies of libburn, libisofs, libisoburn, and libjte.) Have a nice day :) Thomas -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896804 Title: CD/DVD drive detected as read only, command line and GUI programs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/brasero/+bug/1896804/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1849644] Re: QEMU VNC websocket proxy requires non-standard 'binary' subprotocol
Repro steps: $ sudo apt install qemu-system-x86 novnc /usr/share/novnc python3 -m http.server Connect browser to http://:8000/vnc.html Click "Settings" Open "advanced" Open "websocket" Set port 5700 Clear path Click "Connect" And it works ... Same happened to me. I suppose I will reattempt with the non-proprietary drivers and see if that will work out. Running an nVidia 1060 in an MSI laptop, SSD, 32GB ram, and was attempting to install the Voyager distro. The bug report directed me here, so here is my two cents.
