[Bug 1892617] [NEW] xubuntu groovy - ubiquity appears stuck formatting partition

2020-08-23 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

Watched kettle never boils?

QA-test install on
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400 pro/xt)

I'm attempting to replace a QA-test install of 18.04.5 with a groovy
install, I used manual partitioning to select sda5 (an install alongside
in the bionic.5 cycle), and told it to mount as /, use ext4 and format.

It's been over two hours now and it's still not progressed. It feels
like it's stuck

busy are systemd-udevd, udisksd, & parted-server..

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-23 Thread PowerKiKi
John, thank your for your help. I was able to build and run a patched
kernel. And even get the sound back, but only after a modification in
the patch. I noticed Mike created the patch for your machine, but named
it "Samsung Galaxy Book Ion (NT950XCJ-X716A)". This is incorrect because
NT950XCJ-X716A is my 15-inch machines, but you said you have a 13-inch
machine.

Could you please let us know what is your model (via `sudo dmidecode -s
baseboard-product-name`) ?

Then we can submit a new patch that correct the original one, and also
add support for my model.

[Bug 1854588] Re: gdebi-gtk calls pkexec inappropriately

2020-08-23 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
The problem is not in firefox or mate, it's in gdebi-gtk, and
specifically in GDebiGtk.py, line 619:

os.execv(pkexec_cmd, pkexec_args+gdebi_args)

This replaces the current process with a pkexec call. This is not a
valid usage of pkexec, as pkexec requires the parent process to not be
init (ppid!=1).

To reproduce the issue without firefox, one can just run `setsid gdebi-
gtk package.deb`.

In a similar bug report for update-manager (LP: #1020115), this flag was
used instead of os.execv:

flags = GObject.SPAWN_DO_NOT_REAP_CHILD
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/update-manager/main/view/head:/UpdateManager/backend/InstallBackendSynaptic.py#L63

Is gdebi still maintained by Ubuntu developers, or should we report this in
Debian?
Can we propose a patch similar to the update manager, or even just use a simple
shell wrapper?

** Summary changed:

- Clicking 'Install' on gdebi-gtk makes it vanish ONLY when .deb opened from
Chrome/Firefox
+ gdebi-gtk calls pkexec inappropriately

** No longer affects: firefox (Ubuntu)

** Project changed: ubuntu-mate => gdebi

The problem is still here with Kubuntu 20.04 updated today for guest and host:
clipboard works erratically and sometimes is bloked.
The proposed solution don't work fr me because I need to copy from host and
paste in guest.

The only workaround I found is to use mate desktop in the guest.

[Bug 1886672] Re: Second screen is not always made to awaken when using multiple displays. Desktop is multiple display, but only laptop screen is on while second screen sometimes remains off

2020-08-23 Thread Brendan_P
Apologies for the delayed reply. I've done some additional testing,
including the Wayland session. Here my findings:

removed .config/monitors.xml and .config/monitors.xml~
unplugged monitor cable, unplugged monitor power
shutdown > start-up
Set display preferences for single/laptop screen
shutdown > start-up
plugged in monitor power
plugged in monitor to laptop
- no change -
opened display settings
monitor starts up as second screen
changed settings as needed for both screens > apply > keep settings
second monitor switches off
shutdown and restart > second monitor on and with correct settings
lock screen > wait for second monitor to go back to sleep
-- correct behaviour resumes --
wake screen > both monitors resume as expected
suspend machine > resume > both monitors resume as expected
-- END--
unplug second monitor > single/laptop display resumes correctly
plug second monitor back in, display remains unchanged (laptop/single only)
unplug second monitor
suspend laptop
plug in second monitor
resume laptop, second monitor remains off
logout
login screen displayed with second screen now enabled
login
display resets to multiple display desktop but second screen remains off
remove second screen > display resets correctly to single laptop screen
shutdown
--- correct behaviour resumes --
plugin in second monitor
start
both screens active including login
login
both screens working as expected
lock screen > all screens suspend
move mouse to active screens > both resume and can login
suspend
suspend machine > resume > both monitors resume as expected
suspend > unplug second monitor > resume > single display/laptop works as
expected
-- END --
suspend > plugin in second monitor > resume > display remains in "single" mode
> second monitor remains off
restart gnome-shell (Alt+F2 > r) display resets to correct two display setup
with second monitor on
lock screen > monitor suspend > move mouse to activate screens > only laptop
screen wakes up
shutdown
--- correct behaviour resumes --
start
both screens active including login
login
both screens working as expected
lock screen > all screens suspend
move mouse to active screens > both resume and can login
suspend
suspend machine > resume > both monitors resume as expected
END TESTING

Wayland
-
setup second display, all working as expected (lock screen and suspend resume
work fine)
remove second screen > screen resets to single display
plug in second screen > no change
open display settings > display settings do not recognise second screen
logout
login screen, both displays work
login > both displays working as expected (lock screen and suspend resume work
fine)
suspend > remove second display > resume
single display resets as expected
suspend > add second screen > resume
second screen remains off, display remains in 'single' display mode.
logout
login screen, both displays work
login > both displays working as expected (lock screen and suspend resume work
fine)
END WAYLAND TESTING

Thanks for the time and effort all.

[Bug 1892620] [NEW] power management incorrect wifi & bluetooth power off handling

2020-08-23 Thread Aleksander
Public bug reported:

Releases: Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 20.04.1
Hardware: HP ProBook 4540s

When in Power Management, there are 2 slider button options (my own translation
from Polish):
Enable Wifi power off for energy saving
Enable Bluetooth power off for energy saving

But they seem to be directly disabling these modules, instead of only
changing the power saving feature.

[Bug 1892621] [NEW] No login screen when waking from sleep

2020-08-23 Thread Raphael Mankin
Public bug reported:

This is similar to, but not identical to #1374830.

I am running a Lenovo P1 with an external monitor. Generally the laptop
lid is closed and I am relying just on an external monitor, mouse and
keyboard.

*Sometimes*, when waking the machine from sleep either:
a. It does not wake the external monitor at all, or
b1. It wakes the external monitor, but all I get is a mouse cursor on a black
screen. Letting it time out and invoke the screensaver then enables me to
login, or
b2. As b1, but the screensaver does not start. I then have to open and shut the
laptop lid in order to wake the external monitor properly.

This whole behaviour is more common when the sleep has been of long
duration, e.g. overnight.

[Bug 1882998] Re: openvdb6.2 is non functionnal on Focal due to jemalloc

2020-08-23 Thread Richard Viney
Thanks.

In my opinion this could warrant fixing in 20.04 LTS because:

- it's a regression from 18.04 LTS, so certain applications and usage patterns
will break as users try to upgrade (which is what happened to me).
- it affects several packages, specifically: libopenimageio, libopenvdb and
python3-openvdb. libopenimageio is widely used, and python3-openvdb is
currently not able to be imported because of this issue. Any other libraries
that depend on openvdb will also be affected.
- there's no need to upgrade to openvdb 7.x, and no code changes are required
to the current 6.2.1 release either. It needs to be compiled with
-DCONCURRENT_MALLOC=Tbballoc added to the CMake command line, and there's a
patch available for this small change already.
- this wouldn't be a high-risk update.

I ended up working around my problem by setting the following environment
variable that causes jemalloc to be loaded at process start, so it doesn't try
to load itself later on in response to a dlopen() call.

    LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libjemalloc.so.2

I've never worked directly with Ubuntu packages, but will take a look at the
SRU Procedure and see if I can put something together.

[Bug 1892620] Re: power management incorrect wifi & bluetooth power off handling

2020-08-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1892620/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

2020-08-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
Public bug reported:

This is a tracking bug for GNOME Flashback 3.36.4 upload to Focal.

Here is upstream diff and list of commits between 3.36.3 and 3.36.4:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-flashback/-/compare/3.36.3...3.36.4

Upstream NEWS entry is:

Version 3.36.4

- Update lock screen window on monitor changes. (LP: #1891855)
- Don't lock screen on suspend if automatic screen lock
  is disabled. (LP: #1891681)

[Bug 1891681] Re: Can not disable screen locking after suspend in ubuntu 20.04 (gnome-flashback)

2020-08-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ When suspending the computer, screen lock activates even if it is
+ disabled.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Disable screen locking by running the following command:
+ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled false
+ 2. Log into GNOME Flashback (Metacity) session.
+ 3. Suspend the computer and then wake it up back.
+ 4. There should be no lock screen, the desktop should be seen as before
suspend.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ See https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
+ flashback/-/commit/fd4855c406106750 for the upstream fix.
+
+ The fix is trivial: when gf_prefs_get_lock_enabled() returns false,
+ listener_lock_cb() is not called. In any case, potential regressions
+ would be limited to screen locking code.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
  Hello!

I updated from 18.04 to 20.04 and since then unable to disable lock
screen, despite it was disabled in 18.04. Corresponding setting in the
gui does not take effect, so does gsettings set
  org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-enabled false or xset s off. I also
tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 (the setting was sddm, and i changed it
to gdm3) with the same effect.

After suspension i get picture with purple fossa and password field, in
which i can not change keyboard layout with keyboard, but only with
mouse. My session is gnome-flashback (3.36.3-0ubuntu1) metacity
(1:3.36.1-1). The lock screen does not appear after screensaver (i use
  xscreensaver).

However once this lock screen stopped to appear, but at the same time
the system started to enter suspend mode randomly and quite often. After
rebooting the lock screens came back.

Also the sound volume is set to "mute" sometimes after suspend.

journalctl -xe starting at the beginning of suspension (unfortunately it
is in part in russian) in the attached file.

I asked this on askubuntu and was advised to file a bug here.
  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1265613/can-not-disable-screen-locking-
  after-suspend-in-20-04

  Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1882531] Re: desktop context not localized

2020-08-23 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ GNOME Flashback desktop is not localized into German.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Enable German locale (de_DE.UTF-8).
+ 2. Log into the GNOME Flashback (Metacity) session.
+ 3. Right-click on the desktop to open the context menu.
+ 4. It should be in German, not in English.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ The regression can be that the translation is wrong. The German
+ translation was done by me (Dmitry Shachnev), but it was reviewed and
+ corrected by Tim Sabsch.
+
+ [Original Description]
+
  Hi,

at least in german environment the rightclick menu is not localized (and
  also the home-link).

[Bug 1886277] Re: Regression on NFS: unable to handle page fault in mempool_alloc_slab

2020-08-23 Thread Marc Kolly
That is great to hear @marianrh!

I switched the entire workforce to the 5.8 kernel after the bug was
introduced on those machines that are still on 18.04 and have HWE
installed. Now I installed two machines for testing purposes with Ubuntu
20.04 and the problem reappeared quite quickly, so I put them on the 5.8
kernel as well.

I will try 5.4.60-050460-generic #202008210836 now and see if it works
as well.

[Bug 1891016] Re: [Keyboard Layouts] No actual keyboard layouts for many languages

2020-08-23 Thread hatsune
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 20.4.1 LTS

  gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources true
  (done)

On ubuntu, proper keyboard layouts not available for many languages. Below
few examples
  - Chinese (Available layouts: Chinese, Hanyu Pinyin(altgr)
  - Sinhala (Available layouts: US, with sinhala letters, Sinhala (phonetic)
  and many other languages

According above two examples, it's better to not add above mentioned
layouts because no useful at all.

See the windows 10, it has exact proper keyboard layouts for nearly all
popular languages. Review them and implement the same for ubuntu

+ Furthermore, there're huge amount of keyboard layouts available with
+ english characters for many languages.(eg: japanese, thai and more) it's
+ better remove them and basically duplicate with english keyboard layouts

[Bug 1892347] Re: HiSilicon HNS3 ethernet broken

2020-08-23 Thread Ike Panhc
Hi torel,

As mentioned in #16, this issue might be solved in -proposed kernel.
Would you might test again with bionic-proposed kernel?

Please use follow command to enable -proposed pocket for your Ubuntu
system

$ sudo apt-add-repository "deb http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports
bionic-proposed main"
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt dist-upgrade

and then reboot for -proposed kernel.

Anything I can do to solvethis? I don't use any X11 feature beyond what

[Bug 1861610] Re: 'Elan touchpad' not detected on 'Lenovo ThinkBook 15 IIL'

2020-08-23 Thread Almir Mulalic
Hello guys another update from me. I saw that tjis thread is shared
across multiple distro forums and because I tested 4 I would like to
post it here for feuture reference.

Ubuntu - working but with grub parametres from comment #96, sadly no
gestures are available (nor will be by libinput and touchpad-gestures
library because they just can't reckognize them)

Mint - same as linux

Redhat - working but clicks are inverted for me lol (nothing on settings
can chnage it but I guess that you can change it somehow tbh didnt want
to bother with it)

Kali - same as ubuntu but the touchpad is VEEERY snesitive and
everything will trigger touch, multiple times while i was writing
something i was iterulted by a click and this cannot be changed. For
some reason ubuntu is better. Also it cant support gestures only click
and pointera. I got in contact with libinput creator and after some
testibg we realised that it can onky capture point devices and click
events, nothing multitouch. Also every gestures on xinputlist are
displayed as n/a

Arch - My biggest surprise and I was so happy to boot it on arch because
it works flawlessly. Not only that touchpad works (with hack) buz the
gestures of scrolling got automatically reckognized, i tried as much as
i can to trigger accidental clicks but couldnt do it, only thing is that
it comes with touch to click disabled which was a quick fix.I think that
it is compatible with libinput or other gestures because its reckongized
as ELAN not just pointer device. This will be my main distro on this
laptop.

Hope that this was helpfull i'll also link other newer lenovo devices
that I test so that this problem does not limit to thinkbooks. Again
this is just my experience for you it might be different.

[Bug 1892635] [NEW] mysql-direct-connector not working

2020-08-23 Thread Duns
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to (k)ubuntu 20.04.1, both with LibreOffice 6.4. and
LibreOffice 7, mysql direct connector doesn't work any more (unlike in
(k)ubuntu 18.04 and LO 6.0).
Mysql (mariadb, installed with lampp) is perfectly working in browsers: I can
see php+mysql pages in localhost, without any problem.
But if I try to open a database odb connected with mysql I get an error
message
[code]
Code:

SQL Status: HY000
Error code: 2003
Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (111)
/build/libreoffice-ron9it/libreoffice-7.0.0~rc3/connectivity/source/drivers/mysqlc/mysqlc_general.cxx:119
[/code]
I believe that is a problem of mysql-connector provided with Ubuntu, in the
past so useful (because LO extension are not working).

[Bug 1892638] [NEW] The first user on Lubuntu 20.04 gets the UID 1001

2020-08-23 Thread Reiner
Public bug reported:

Hello Maintainer,

On live-media the group sambashare has the UID 130. After Installation,
the group sambashare has the UID 1000, so that the first user gets the
UID 1001.

Using a system with only one user, it is no problem. But if you have
more than one user with existing home directories, the users get wrong
UIDs.

For exaple:

user0 => 1000:1001
user1 => 1001:1002
user2 => 1002:1003

The Problem exists in Lubuntu 19.10, 20.04 and 20.04.1.
No Problem in Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Ubuntu-Studio media.

Reiner

Sure, it returns the following :

NP930XCJ-K01US

In the US, there are currently just two models of the Ion, my model and
the 15" model - NP950XCJ-K01US. The specs say both models have the same audio,
so you could probably include that model as well, unless you need someone to
confirm on that specific hardware

It is recognized by xinput in inoperational condition as well.
However, the behavior is not totally random. Chances are much better if I shut
the computer down and then power it on after a few seconds compared to hitting
the reboot button.
I am using manjaro linux, but also tried ubuntu and fedora, it's the same on
all distros as well as on the 5.6 kernel.
I have been wondering if it is possible to completely restart the touchpad
until it works, but I could not find out which component need to be restarted
for that and how to do it. This would be a great functionality to fix all kinds
of hardware bugs.
Another idea would be to find out what makes the touchpad go into the working
or not working state. I would be pleased for any ideas.

Thanks! I also realized that chances are better for the touchpad to work
if it worked on the last boot. I believe the kernel does strange things
with it when it spams me with "controller timed out" messages on
shutdown. I wrote a script which prevents the system from having these
shutdown issues. It unloads some modules and then reloads them.
Unfortunately it only helps for the next boot, the touchpad is never
even recognized after running it.

sudo modprobe -r i2c_hid
sudo modprobe -r i2c_piix4
sudo modprobe -r hid_multitouch
sudo modprobe i2c_hid
sudo modprobe i2c_piix4
sudo modprobe hid_multitouch

It helps to break "bad boot streaks"

The "controller timed out" messages stops. Although that does not fix the
touchpad it does suggest that this module is at cause.

After further digging, I got another set of log after booting on
mainline (appended below). Basically, I see that the following shows up
first before the "time out spamming" starts:

i2c_designware AMDI0010:00: i2c_dw_handle_tx_abort: lost arbitration
i2c_designware AMDI0010:00: controller timed out
i2c_hid i2c-MSFT0004:00: failed to retrieve report from device.

Now, I found these 3 exact log messages in this commit to

** Description changed:

I had my system fonts scaled to a FACTOR of 0.90 using GNOME TWEAKS.But after
a RECENT UPDATE
(which upgraded the following packages : gir1.2-mutter-6:amd64
(3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1, 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2), libcurl4:amd64

(3.36.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1, 3.36.4-0ubuntu0.20.04.2)) -
the fonts automatically scale up after every reboot and ruin the look of my
desktop.I had never encountered this problem before. It can be fixed by manually
scaling back the fonts in GNOME TWEAKS after every reboot , which is annoying.I
really would love to have this fixed.

[Bug 1892613] Re: Left Panel on multi-monitor setup causes issues with window placement on display left of primary

2020-08-23 Thread Dan Martin
Ok, thanks for the details. Odd that this doesn't happen in gnome-shell
running on xorg. I was recreating the same panel layout I've been using
in gnome for years, with the same display layout. Maybe they have a
workaround?

[Bug 1892647] [NEW] gnome-screensaver can be failed into a locked state.

2020-08-23 Thread caleb graham
Public bug reported:

When the screen is locked, you can freeze the screensaver application by
holding escape and scrolling up to activate the unlock screen with the
mouse.  'authentication error' pops up and the password input {widget?}
is non-responsive.

this isn't likely to pose a problem, but I will poke at it a bit and if
I see an issue with commands running with the user's privilege I will
let you know.

[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-23 Thread John Hoff
@gannon1

Mike, I didn't have luck with the exact steps in comment 15, but the
wiki written by Conner was very solid. I had to work through a couple
small differences on my system, but now I have a working QEMU VM where
the realtek hardware is recognized and the speakers actually work! I
worked through all errors I encountered with the QemuHDADump progam and
it appears to be running as expected. I went into device manager and
disabled and then re-enabled the realtek audio device, and during the
re-enable it recorded the following writes (along with creating related
frame binary files) :

Doesn't solve it for me. I have the AMD Ideapad 5-14. In fact it doesn't
even boot with "pci=nocrs". No elan module is used.

I've switched to genuine Ubuntu due to a new computer with touchscreen and
stylus.
I think this issue might be easily tested by anyone having latest Xubuntu USB
