[Bug 1736116] Re: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox
Isn't 4.13 the first kernel to fix that Intel bug that was all over the news earlier this month? I've been booting with 4.10 in order to use virtualbox; does that make me susceptible to that kernel-memory-leaking-intel-bug? http://www.businessinsider.com/linus-torvalds-linux-inventor-is-furious- at-intel-2018-1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1736116 Title: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1736116/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1744515] Re: Compiz flashback has high-CPU kworker thread when screen updates
Problem does not happen when booting from linux kernel 4.8.0-34-generic; CPU usage is slightly higher than Metacity, no significant kworker threads. It does happen with updated kernel 4.13.0-25-generic (previously -21). When I went to recovery mode for 4.13.0-25, tried to select failsafeX graphics, then resumed normal boot, resolution was messed up and Compiz and Xorg were at 50~60% of a CPU instead of 5~8%. Unfortunately, did not note whether there was a high kworker thread. Hope this helps. I don't have any other kernels installed. Could someone please at least try to verify this? If they don't experience it, that's useful to know as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1744515 Title: Compiz flashback has high-CPU kworker thread when screen updates To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1744515/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1744543] [NEW] Screen updating with Compiz causes high-CPU kworker thread in 4.13 or earlier
Public bug reported: This duplicates the information in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1744515. Filing this to get more exposure. The automatically-included information for this reports notes that I'm using kernel 4.8, where this issue doesn't occur. I don't have any other kernels to test with. When the screen updates in 4.13 while running Compiz, it causes high CPU usage in a kworker thread. This was 30~40% of a CPU core on my system. This doesn't happen with other window managers tested, like Metacity, or whatever non-Compiz Gnome and Ubuntu use (gnome-shell maybe, though that 15% CPU load more than Metacity when I checked). Since Unity uses Compiz, it happens there as well as with 'Ubuntu flashback Compiz'. This seems unrelated to how much of the screen is being repainted, as the 'Show Repaint' plugin in Compiz can show that only a few pixels are being updated and the kworker load is the same. Seth, I can't think about such scenario for a number of reasons: 1. Such compiler/optimization should throw away the call to ibv_cmd_get_context(). 2. It should skip "write(context->cmd_fd, cmd, cmd_size) != cmd_size)" check there. [Bug 1696305] Re: High CPU usage in gnome-shell just redrawing the screen (Firefox is running)
The above bug seems to be solved or at least mitigated a bit. With just having firefox up the CPU usage of gnome-shell is between 2-5%. Gnome shell is still much less performant than Unity though, by moving windows, open Activities or dragging the mouse over the dock its CPU usage quickly jumps to 20%. [Bug 1742302] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-25 broke nvidia driver
For what it's worth, I'm using a GeForce GT 620 and Ubuntu 17.10 and I can't see the KDE login screen. I get a black screen but when I forcefully shut the computer down, I get the KDE logo as if I'm being logged out. I upgraded to the latest NVidia driver from the NVidia web site (384.111 was the most recent one offered to me) and then booting back to 4.13.0-21 works, as others have observed. That is, I'm not using the standard NVidia driver packages. I picked this option since it's easier to boot to a slightly older kernel; going back to an older NVidia driver is a bit harder... I guess there is something between 4.13.0-21 and 4.13.0-25? I'm not doing any GPU work, so I don't know if that is fine. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1742302 Title: Kernel 4.13.0-25 broke nvidia driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1742302/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1736116] Re: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox
I was seeing more screen tearing after going back to the 4.4 kernel and corresponding xserver so I decided I wanted to be able to use the HWE stack again. I almost moved to virtualbox 5.2 from the virtualbox.org repos but then I just decided to backport virtualbox 5.1.30 from artful and that worked fine. The process is roughly: ```sh $ sudo apt build-dep virtualbox # Set your /etc/apt/sources.list deb-src entries to point to artful. You want to replace xenial with artful in the lines: # deb-src http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial multiverse # deb-src http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-updates multiverse $ apt source virtualbox $ cd virtualbox-5.1.30-dfsg $ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -nc # This will fail but tell you some missing dependencies that you need to install # You can install everything but kbuild but we will just ignore it next (the -d flag) $ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -d -us -uc -nc # now you have the packages built $ cd .. $ sudo dpkg -i ``` If you also need the proprietary extensions package you can just grab the exact one from artful from here: https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/virtualbox-ext-pack This virtualbox version seems to work fine. The 5.2 from bionic fails with some qt5 issues, which may just be other missing dependencies. It would seem simple enough to just backport virtualbox 5.1 (or even 5.2) to xenial but I don't know if there's a maintainer around to do it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1736116 Title: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1736116/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
