[Bug 1736116] Re: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2018-01-21 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Isn't 4.13 the first kernel to fix that Intel bug that was all over the
news earlier this month?

I've been booting with 4.10 in order to use virtualbox; does that make
me susceptible to that kernel-memory-leaking-intel-bug?

[Bug 1744515] Re: Compiz flashback has high-CPU kworker thread when screen updates

2018-01-21 Thread Misaki
Problem does not happen when booting from linux kernel 4.8.0-34-generic;
CPU usage is slightly higher than Metacity, no significant kworker
threads.

It does happen with updated kernel 4.13.0-25-generic (previously -21).
When I went to recovery mode for 4.13.0-25, tried to select failsafeX
graphics, then resumed normal boot, resolution was messed up and Compiz
and Xorg were at 50~60% of a CPU instead of 5~8%. Unfortunately, did not
note whether there was a high kworker thread.

Hope this helps. I don't have any other kernels installed.

Could someone please at least try to verify this? If they don't
experience it, that's useful to know as well.

[Bug 1736116] Re: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2018-01-21 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
xoristzatziki's suggestion of backporting VirtualBox 5.2.6 to 16.04 LTS
is what I think needs to happen here.

Following Alkis Georgopoulos's advice, I can confirm that 5.2.6 works
great on the 4.13 kernel

To install it, I ran all of this as one command:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian
xenial contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list' ; wget -q
https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-
key add ; sudo apt remove virtualbox ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt
install virtualbox-5.2

I am trying to use the HP EliteDisplay S140u external USB display,
therefore I have installed DisplayLink softwares. Now, when the display
is connected, the Computer quickly runs into 100% CPU load and crashes.
This only happens when the display is connected. It is enough to open a
browser, start the file explorer and try to open a pdf file.

[Bug 1744543] [NEW] Screen updating with Compiz causes high-CPU kworker thread in 4.13 or earlier

2018-01-21 Thread Misaki
Public bug reported:

This duplicates the information in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1744515. Filing
this to get more exposure.

The automatically-included information for this reports notes that I'm
using kernel 4.8, where this issue doesn't occur. I don't have any other
kernels to test with.

When the screen updates in 4.13 while running Compiz, it causes high CPU
usage in a kworker thread. This was 30~40% of a CPU core on my system.
This doesn't happen with other window managers tested, like Metacity, or
whatever non-Compiz Gnome and Ubuntu use (gnome-shell maybe, though that
15% CPU load more than Metacity when I checked). Since Unity uses
Compiz, it happens there as well as with 'Ubuntu flashback Compiz'.

This seems unrelated to how much of the screen is being repainted, as
the 'Show Repaint' plugin in Compiz can show that only a few pixels are
being updated and the kworker load is the same.

[Bug 1727695] Re: snap linker/libs problem with 17.10

2018-01-21 Thread Brett Sutton
The soluiont of installing edge didn't work for me.
I'm still seeing :

I ran:
sudo snap install --classic --edge snapcraft

I then deleted all the snap subdirectories and then re-ran snapscraft.

I then re-installed the snap via;

snap remove pi-gation
sudo snap install --dangerous --devmode pi-gation_0.1_amd64.snap

/var/log/syslog then reported:

[Bug 1732892] Re: [MIR] 18.04 rdma-core as replacement for older ibverbs code

2018-01-21 Thread Leon Romanovsky
Seth,

I can't think about such scenario for a number of reasons:
1. Such compiler/optimization should throw away the call to
ibv_cmd_get_context().
2. It should skip "write(context->cmd_fd, cmd, cmd_size) != cmd_size)" check
there.

Thanks

[Bug 1727695] Re: snap linker/libs problem with 17.10

2018-01-21 Thread Brett Sutton
OK, I found my problem.

I had previously installed :
apt install snapcraft

so i was using the debian snapcraft package.

I removed the deb snapcraft

apt remove snapcraft

then installed the snap version

sudo snap install --classic --edge snapcraft

And now my snap runs :)

[Bug 1696305] Re: High CPU usage in gnome-shell just redrawing the screen (Firefox is running)

2018-01-21 Thread Rasmus Eneman
The above bug seems to be solved or at least mitigated a bit. With just
having firefox up the CPU usage of gnome-shell is between 2-5%.

Gnome shell is still much less performant than Unity though, by moving
windows, open Activities or dragging the mouse over the dock its CPU
usage quickly jumps to 20%. But that is probably things that should have
their own bugs.

[Bug 1740736] Re: Driver it87 and lm_sensors are too old and don't support newer chipsets (such as Z370).

If 0x8686 is not in the sources
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/v4.15-rc8/drivers/hwmon/it87.c it
won't simply work...

Again, if 'it8686' ( #define IT8686E_DEVID 0x8686 ) is not present and managed,
the driver won't work with it...
Look into https://github.com/groeck/it87/blob/master/it87.c please and see it -
happy to point out the section if needed.

installed
modinfo 8812au: vermagic: 4.4.0-109-generic SMP mod_unload modversions

However: driver do not load (i.e is not listed in lsmod). I can issue
modprobe 8812au and load the driver, but it is useless (i.e. is not
used).

Any help will be very appreciated, because I have a limited knowledge

[Bug 1742675] Re: after upgrade to linux-image-extra-4.13.0-26-generic the system does not start at all

2018-01-21 Thread volker kempter
for me,lubuntu,16.04, 32 bit installation, no kernels 4.13 and 4.14
boot, neither without or with acpi=off. Without acpi=off, boot stops
right after leaving the grub menu; with acpi=off after the message
"starting to show plymouth boot screen".

Neither does kernel 4.14.14-041414 boot; it fails also with acpi=off.

Boot, without any additional boot options, is possible for 4.10.0-43 and
4.4.0-112

[Bug 1744554] [NEW] Muon search matches only beginning of package names

2018-01-21 Thread Karmo Rosental
Public bug reported:

Muon search matches only beginning of package name or beginning of
substring of package name splitted by dash.

Let example package to search be ttf-mscorefonts-installer.

Search like corefonts does not give any results. Have to search for
mscorefonts to get it listed in the results.

I think it should also match middle or end part of the word.

Another example is libjxr0. Would be good to be able to search it by
jxr0.

[Bug 1742302] Re: Kernel 4.13.0-25 broke nvidia driver

2018-01-21 Thread Raymond Wan
For what it's worth, I'm using a GeForce GT 620 and Ubuntu 17.10 and I
can't see the KDE login screen. I get a black screen but when I
forcefully shut the computer down, I get the KDE logo as if I'm being
logged out.

I upgraded to the latest NVidia driver from the NVidia web site (384.111
was the most recent one offered to me) and then booting back to
4.13.0-21 works, as others have observed. That is, I'm not using the
standard NVidia driver packages.

I picked this option since it's easier to boot to a slightly older
kernel; going back to an older NVidia driver is a bit harder...

I guess there is something between 4.13.0-21 and 4.13.0-25? I'm not
doing any GPU work, so I don't know if that is fine.

[Bug 1736116] Re: Host with kernel 4.13 freezes when starting a VM with VirtualBox

2018-01-21 Thread Pedro Côrte-Real
I was seeing more screen tearing after going back to the 4.4 kernel and
corresponding xserver so I decided I wanted to be able to use the HWE
stack again. I almost moved to virtualbox 5.2 from the virtualbox.org
repos but then I just decided to backport virtualbox 5.1.30 from artful
and that worked fine. The process is roughly:

```sh
$ sudo apt build-dep virtualbox
# Set your /etc/apt/sources.list deb-src entries to point to artful. You want
to replace xenial with artful in the lines:
# deb-src http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial multiverse
# deb-src http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial-updates multiverse
$ apt source virtualbox
$ cd virtualbox-5.1.30-dfsg
$ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -nc
# This will fail but tell you some missing dependencies that you need to install
# You can install everything but kbuild but we will just ignore it next (the -d
flag)
$ sudo dpkg-buildpackage -d -us -uc -nc
# now you have the packages built
$ cd ..
$ sudo dpkg -i
```

If you also need the proprietary extensions package you can just grab
the exact one from artful from here:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/virtualbox-ext-pack

This virtualbox version seems to work fine. The 5.2 from bionic fails
with some qt5 issues, which may just be other missing dependencies. It
would seem simple enough to just backport virtualbox 5.1 (or even 5.2)
to xenial but I don't know if there's a maintainer around to do it.

[Bug 1742675] Re: after upgrade to linux-image-extra-4.13.0-26-generic the system does not start at all

2018-01-21 Thread Leszek
Similar thing in my situation - all kernel including linux-
image-4.13.0-25-generic work OK on my Asus Zenbook UX305FA but linux-
image-4.13.0-26-generic makes my laptop almost unusable (everything is
many times slower) and any newer version up to current linux-
image-4.13.0-30-generic hang during start. On plymounth screen it boots
up to progress bar and hangs just before showing mouse pointer
(comparing to normal boot).

On the other hand all kernels from mainline PPA work without problem
(including latest 4.14.13 and 4.15-RC8).
