Re: [Bug 1700265] Re: executing grub-install /dev/sda failed

2017-07-09 Thread Benedict Florance
Respected,

As advised by you I ran, chkdsk in Windows 10.

Link for my CHKDSK Results: https://pastebin.com/tRqLk94Z

Now after running chkdsk, I tried to install Ubuntu again, I got this
error: grub-efi-amd64-signed failed to install into /target/. Without GRUB
boot loader, the installed system will not boot. The details of the error
are here in this question: https://askubuntu.com/questions/934415/ubuntu-
16-04-grub-efi-amd64-signed-failed-to-install-into-target-
error/934416#934416

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1701917] Re: Slow in locking

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
As for 5.36 the speed varies:

sh -c './test-xscreensaver.sh ; beep'

might play sound almost immediately, or it could wait until xscreensaver
has faded the screen to black. What causes such variation? It is
important to fade to black before e.g. suspending to RAM...

[Bug 1703172] [NEW] Newest kernel gives error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.

2017-07-09 Thread Otus
Public bug reported:

Using the 4.10.0-26 kernel I get the following error on boot:

./test-xscreensaver.sh && xfce4-session-logout -s
seems to wait fading to finish before suspending to RAM. If I cp
./test-xscreensaver.sh to /usr/local/bin/xflock4 and set "Lock screen before
sleep" enabled in "Session and Startup" settings, it does not wait, which is
bad.

[Bug 1703176] [NEW] jackd assert failure: jackd: rawmidi.c:268: snd_rawmidi_open_conf: Assertion `err >= 0' failed.

2017-07-09 Thread David Kastrup
Public bug reported:

This may or may not be an artifact of me running a 32-bit userland on a
64-bit kernel (for debugging and testing purposes).

However, preceding the command line with "setarch i386" does not help.

The exact command line used was

jackd -d alsa -X raw -d hw:0

To trigger the bug, it is important that there actually is a raw Midi
device available on the system. Any such device will trigger the
problem in my experience.

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
See the lxlock script by running 'cat $(which lxlock)' in terminal.
There might be alternatives to xscreensaver depending on your LXDE
version. E.g. you could run light-locker daemon instead of xscreensaver
and the script would use 'light-locker-command -l' for locking
thereafter.

[Bug 1255815] Re: screenlock does not dpms off when screensaver is disabled

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
Aa a workaround you could use the Blanc Screen Only mode and set
timeouts to 0 in Advanced tab and enable Quick Power-off in Blank Only
Mode. It sets off time internally to 65535 seconds. But it just powers
off first time, not if you wake up screen while locked, right?

[Bug 1255815] Re: screenlock does not dpms off when screensaver is disabled

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
Xfce has a mode switch (normal/presentation) in Xfce Power Manager's tray icon
menu, but it does not work well with xscreensaver. I have been working on
xflock4 script that is used by Xfce for locking. My version will save the dpms
state, use decent state while locked, and restore the old state, when unlocked;
the system works by non-forking lockers only (i.e. lockers that run on
foreground). The script could be used as lxlock if modified slightly. See

[Bug 1681513] Re: Ubuntu 17.04/17.10: New feature in NetworkManager stops several WiFi adapters from working (MAC Address Randomization issue)

2017-07-09 Thread Kerry Billingham
This issue I have is when I first boot my laptop (HP Envy Ubuntu 17.04)
the wireless will not connect. If I cycle wireless button then I get a
connection.

I found that if I use the work-around described above (don't use random
mac address) then it appears that I do not have this issue.

One other point I also need to check. A long time ago I may have set my
wireless router to assign specific IP addresses to specific MAC
addresses so may have been the cause of my issue.

[Bug 597071] Re: when suspending during unlock attempt, screen is not locked on unsuspend

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
Xubuntu 10.04 is no longer supported. Can you reproduce the bug in newer
supported Xubuntu? Which? You could install newer screensaver from PPA
https://launchpad.net/~hda-me/+archive/ubuntu/xscreensaver

Xfce calls xflock4 before suspending, if set to lock in preferences. You
may want to disable the setting and call 'sh -c 'xflock4 && xfce4
-session-logout -s' instead. Does it make difference?

[Bug 1703195] [NEW] Unable to report VirtualBox bug because of apport bug - could find no obvious other way to report any bugs

2017-07-09 Thread Phil Dobber
Public bug reported:

I type
Alt-F2 ubuntu-bugs VirtualBox
apport says Application not installed !
But when I just type
ubuntu-bugs VirtualBox
ubuntu starts VirtualBox (so it DOES know it's installed)

Since upgarding from 12.04 to 14.04 to 16.04 LTS VirtualBox locks up on
the machine completely, I can't kill any processes cleanly (even as root
equivalent) so I have to log out (attempt repeatedly) or mostly I need
to do a console shutdown - r 0

I have reported this to Oracle VirtualBox, and have lots of info I can
supply to help isolate the bug which I am well on way to isolating, but
my question here is: Is there an alternate method (documented I may have
missed) to report bug with VirtualBox (or any app) that crashes / fails
to work with apport?

Thanks for any help!

Regards,
Phil

[Bug 1701171] Re: Laptop hangs on wake-up

2017-07-09 Thread Andrew
I have tested it with the mainline kernel 4.12 (generic and low-
latency). The bug is still there. I've notice that if I've unplugged the
power adapter before trying to wake the laptop up the, sometimes it
wakes up successfully, what never happens if the power adapter is
pluggen in.

I have attached the dmesg output and a fragment of system log from boot
till sleep, which hanged.

[Bug 1702823] Re: Systemd fails to serialize tasks correctly on daemon-reload

2017-07-09 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
In reply to:
[13:47] cpaelzer, can you simply state the ids of the patches you are
after; and series you want them in; and i can look into
cherrypciking/backporting them and SRUing them throughout.
[13:48] cpaelzer, as i do manage systemd SRUs holistically, and there is
always a queue of things that people want/need in the next upload.

First of all thanks Dimitri, I think I backported them already (apply as-is),
but if you want to do that along your usual work with the
./debian/git-cherry-pick script that is just as fine.
I see that this helps you more than a debdiff to do your SRUs holistically.

Xenial is not affected.
Very strictly Yakkety has only 4 days service left, but I checked and it is
affected.
Zesty and Artful are affected for sure.

The patches upstream are:
aae7e17f9c50015789ccc18a2b8d177730f2d2be
8b108bd0ef46f05fa7938abc787e919249459874

So TL;DR: Please aae7e17f + 8b108bd0 into (Yakkety), Zesty and Artful

[Bug 1702071] Re: Search spins forever, returns no results.

2017-07-09 Thread Colin Law
I am seeing this on a fresh install of Artful. In addition to the search
running forever (or at least a long time) there are no apps to be seen
in the various categories (just rectangles with ... inside) and the
featured app and editor's picks just show dots.

Should I report this as a new bug or is it the same one?

[Bug 1701917] Re: Slow in locking

2017-07-09 Thread Jarno Suni
Here's another test script attached; I used it with xscreensaver 5.36.

extract from terminal:

$ ./test2.sh && paplay /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/complete.oga
31.084305045
xscreensaver-command: activating and locking.

0.00user 0.00system 0:00.02elapsed 15%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 2276maxresident)k

$ ./test2.sh && paplay /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/complete.oga
49.476176724

xscreensaver-command: activating and locking.

0inputs+0outputs (0major+124minor)pagefaults 0swaps

I wonder why time of xscreensaver-command -lock varies so much? For a
second thing: paplay seems to wait until xscreensaver has faded screen,
but if I replace it by beep, it might not wait that long. Why is that?

[Bug 1703176] Re: jackd assert failure: jackd: rawmidi.c:268: snd_rawmidi_open_conf: Assertion `err >= 0' failed.

2017-07-09 Thread David Kastrup
I think that the problem is likely in

/usr/include/sound/asound.h:625

struct snd_rawmidi_params {
int stream;
size_t buffer_size; /* queue size in bytes */
size_t avail_min; /* minimum avail bytes for wakeup */
unsigned int no_active_sensing: 1; /* do not send active sensing byte
in close() */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

struct snd_rawmidi_status {
int stream;
struct timespec tstamp; /* Timestamp */
size_t avail; /* available bytes */
size_t xruns; /* count of overruns since last status
(in bytes) */
unsigned char reserved[16]; /* reserved for future use */
};

Here are 4 uses of size_t which will result in different structures for
32-bit and 64-bit compilations even though 32-bit binaries can
communicate with a 64-bit kernel via ioctl.

So this would appear to require fixing in the ALSA headers of the kernel
and recompiling alsa-lib with the changed headers.

I think using unsigned rather than size_t should work fine in this
regard. However, there are also structures using snd_pcm_uframes_t
which is typedeffed to unsigned long and thus should also be
architecture-dependent.

It's not clear to me why or how the respective ioctl calls would work
for PCM here when running with a 32-bit alsalib/executable and a 64-bit
kernel.

Is this already fixed? Is there way without remapping PrScr key? No
updates of `unity-settings-daemon`

unity-settings-daemon is already the newest version
(15.04.1+16.04.20160701-0ubuntu1).

I'm not sure if you're asking about the design, or test results on a
given implementation, so I'll answer with respect to the design I've
proposed.

This proposal does not involve changing the install-time EFI boot order
at all.

As I understand it, curtin now installs a new boot entry for the
target OS - that is, it no longer passes --no-nvram to grub-install.
But, prior to reboot, it restores the previous default boot entry
(PXE). This proposal would not change this. grub2/update_nvram does
not change the behavior of grub-install called directly - just when
called by the grub maintainer scripts. Of course, this should be
verified when we have a testable implementation.

The impacted archs are described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/1642298/comments/19

In short, EFI-based and POWER systems will be impacted. AFAICT, this
change is also beneficial for POWER, for teh same reasons, and it
should certainly be verified there before merging.

> 3) Does a new kernel install work correctly?

The value of grub2/update_nvram is orthogonal to a new kernel install.
A new kernel install does not trigger a call to grub-install, it just
updates the configuration of the existing grub installation
(update-grub).

I get a similar error when I try to update my system via apt-get update.
The error message says there is an error for git-daemon-run (--configure) but
that seems to be an error due to previous error:

[Bug 1703223] [NEW] Opening any app from launcher is always partially hidden behind desktop menu

2017-07-09 Thread Hugo

The system is missing /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ - and thus (basically) all
apt configuration. Something must have gone horribly wrong at some
point, I suggest you reinstall it.

[Bug 1700650] Re: package dub (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/dub', which is also in package dmd 2.074.1-0

2017-07-09 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubunt
better.

The underlying issue for this bug seems to be that two packages both
include the file '/usr/bin/dub'. This is usually fixed by removing
duplicates (if both packages contain the exact same file) or by marking
them as conflicting so that they cannot be installed on the same system
if both packages try to install unrelated files with the same name.

I tried to also mark dmd as affected by this issue, but I couldn't find
it in Launchpad? Is that package from the Ubuntu archive, or installed
from some third-party service?

[Bug 1703195] Re: Unable to report VirtualBox bug because of apport bug - could find no obvious other way to report any bugs

2017-07-09 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for reporting.

First things, it should be "ubuntu-bug", not -bugs. Secondly, it looks
like report a bug based on a program name, you need to enter the whole
path, i.e. "ubuntu-bug /usr/bin/VirtualBox". (I am not sure if this is
expected, hopefully someone can confirm/deny) Alternatively report
against the package name, which would be virtualbox in lowercase
letters, assuming it is the package from the Ubuntu archives.

You mention Oracle Virtualbox in your post, so I am not sure if you have
the package from the Ubuntu archive, or installed from Oracle.

[Bug 1703235] [NEW] thunar doesn't generate preview of existing PNG image in file conflict resolution dialog

2017-07-09 Thread Karl-Philipp Richter
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:

  1. somehow create the situation that a target directory contains an image
without a generated preview
  2. move a copy of that image from another directory into the mentioned target
directory

current outcome:

  * the dialog asking whether the move should be cancelled or the target
overwritten displays the icon for missing preview for the target image
which makes it hard to decide whether the target ought to be overwritten

expected outcome:

  * the preview of the target image should be generated

[Bug 1673583] Re: dar_split not included in package.

2017-07-09 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
As mentioned in the Debian bug, the lastet version of dar now ships with
dar_split. (See https://packages.ubuntu.com/artful/amd64/dar/filelist
for the package content in the artful package)

Like suggested in your comment, it seems like this was resolved by some
additional lines in `dar.install`. If you need a fix for the bug in
previous versions of Ubuntu, please perform as much as possible of the
SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

[Bug 1703238] [NEW] Firefox mishandles .lz; /etc/mime.types lacks lz line

2017-07-09 Thread Paul Eggert
Public bug reported:

In I reported a
Firefox bug that appears to be due at least in part to /etc/mime.types
missing a line for .lz files. To reproduce the problem:

1. Run Mozilla Firefox 54.0 on Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS x86-64.

2. Visit https://www.iana.org/time-zones

3. Click on "tzdb-2017b.tar.lz" link for "Complete Distribution (Data,
Code and Extras)"

A popup appears, saying "You have chosen to open tzdb-2017b.tar.lz which
is: Lzip archive from: https://www.iana.org. Would you like to save this
file?" What I expected is that the popup should give me the opportunity
to run an archiving program, just as is done for https://www.iana.org
/time-zones/repository/releases/tzdata2017b.tar.gz (referenced on the
same page).

Apparently part of the problem is that /etc/mime.types contains entries
for .gz but not for .lz. Could you please fix that? If I add the
following line:

application/x-lzip lz

to ~/.mime-types, I do get a popup that suggests file-roller, which is
an improvement (though still not as good as .gz). So I suggest adding
such a line to /etc/mime.types.
