[Bug 1594073] [NEW] 16.04 - initrd fails to decrypt and mount /usr directory when it's on it's own cryptsetup partition

2016-06-19 Thread Alessandro Selli
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, upgraded from a 15.10 that did not show the
issue.

Initramd fails at setting up the encrypted /usr partition.
At the (initramfs) prompt the following command is accepted and succeeds at
decrypting the partition:

cryptsetup --key-file /root/etc/keys/sda5_usr open --type luks /dev/sda5
sda5_usr

After entering the above command and pressing + to exit the initramfs
shell, system boot resumes and completes successfully.
/etc (in the initramd) does not have the crypttab file, which is present in the
decrypted and mounted root filesystem in /root/etc.

The problem manifests itself regardless that in /etc/initramfs-
tools/initramfs.conf MODULES=most or MODULES=dep is set before
generating the initrd.

Terminal output of the failed boot up to the initramfs prompt:

[Bug 1590679] Re: Apps can't own session bus names (unity7 interface)

2016-06-19 Thread Simon Fels
Just for interest I did such a simple interfaces some time ago for
playing:

dbus-name:
https://github.com/morphis/snappy/commit/0489b6f23b190d817975247d460990f67e0c4d5c

Allows you to bind a by attribute specified dbus name on the system bus.
This was meant for snap internal communication but could be easily
expanded to specify system/session bus and integrate some snapd
management to avoid bus name collisions.

[Bug 1565106] Re: Wifi works on W10 but not on Ub 16.04 nor 14.04

2016-06-19 Thread gerard
Hi again Chris

Finally I did it ... I made a stupid mistake trying to install Linux
header instead of Linux image.

Here is the installed new kernel
$ uname -a
Linux micronet-club 4.7.0-040700rc3-generic #201606121131 SMP Sun Jun 12
15:34:32 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Strange result!!

1- I first rebooted from 4.6 (current kernel installed from bug team
recommendation) to restart on 4.7
2- wifi still did not work, but after turning bluetooth off it worked!
3- to make sure I powered off/on
4- but then, still doesn't work even though no bluetooth on
5- I've tried to reboot instead of power off/on, but no difference

This is a really tricky affair! work once in some cases then nothing

2016-06-19 Thread Robert Orzanna
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

The Unity Lens Search does not always find applications.

1. Please see screenshot "sig1.png". I type "Sig" but only folders are found
2. I press Escape to delete my search query
3. I retype "Sig" and now Signal application is found as shown in "sig2.png".

Can someone reproduce this on Ubuntu 16.04?

[Bug 1594080] [NEW] gnome-software does not reload itself after being upgraded

2016-06-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

This bug was inspired by
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-software/+bug/1573408/comments/40

What happens

After gnome-software itself is upgraded to a new version, a user needs to log
out and log back in (or otherwise kill the background gnome-software service)
to run the new version.

What should happen
==
gnome-software should restart the background service when gnome-software is
upgraded to a new version.

This issue could instead be mitigated if gnome-software was not *always*
running in the background but only ran occasionally as suggested by bug
1592678.

How to reproduce

Let's test bug 1573408, the inability to install 3rd party apps issue.
1. Since this was a bug released with Ubuntu 16.04, start with a fresh Ubuntu
16.04 install. You can even use the live DVD/USB for this test.
2. Open Firefox and browse to https://www.google.com/chrome/
3. Click the Download now button then click Accept and install.
4. Click OK to open with Software Install.
5. After a few moments, the Software app opens with a basic info page about
google-chrome-stable. Click Install.
6. It doesn't actually install.
7. Open a terminal and run sudo apt update; sudo apt install gnome-software
This will upgrade you to a version that fixes this bug.
8. Repeat steps 2-5. (Note that it doesn't matter whether you closed the
Software app window or not after step 7.)
9. It still doesn't actually install.
10. Log out and log back in. (If you are using the live DVD/USB, the username
is 'ubuntu'. Leave the password blank.). (Alternatively, you can run pkill
gnome-software in your terminal.
11. Repeat steps 2-5. Google Chrome will successfully install.

Regarding #4: Notifications of missed alarms (from clock app) seems to
has been introduced since OTA-11. You can see it in the screenshot in
the middle. It is comming from "Wecker" which is the German wording for
"Alarm". It was created after 10 min (the default timeout time) of not
responding to an alarm.

Regarding #3: I'm aware of bug #1362962. Here I'm talking about the
small icon on the right side of the notification. This is using an old
image. The latest release OTA-11 introduced an anonymous icon without a
number (see screenshot on the right). This should be used by calendar-

[Bug 1592678] Re: gnome-software starts very early in the session, slowing down boot

2016-06-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
And because it runs all the time, we get issues like bug 1594080. It
also worsens bugs like bug 1575426 where a user attempts to work around
the issue by restarting the Software app (only it's not actually
restarted because the process never stopped running).

Now that gnome-software's update notifier has been disabled [1], is
there any reason gnome-software needs a background service anyway?
packagekit or whatever can finish installing or removing an app in the
background without gnome-software needing to still be running for that,
right?

BTW there is not much we can do for X crashing with official nvidia

BTW with ubuntu 16.04 LTS you should have a more stable situation, at
least I didn't experience this kind of issues anymore

[Bug 1594085] [NEW] Software app very slow to fully start up

2016-06-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Public bug reported:

This is follow-up for bug 1592678 which more or less requests that
gnome-software not run a background service.

1. From a terminal, run pkill gnome-software to kill the background service.
2. Start the Software app and click one of the apps on the front page to see
more info about it.

What happens

In my testing on a Ubuntu 16.04 Live DVD in VirtualBox with a traditional
non-SSD hard drive and 1.5 GB allocated RAM (admittedly not the speediest
environment), it took 90 seconds for that info page to load!

Once that page is loaded, browsing to other pages doesn't take long at
all. Or if you just wait 2 minutes first then it's not that slow either.

[Bug 1594087] [NEW] Wouldn't find any wifi network after suspend/resume, restart fixed the issue

2016-06-19 Thread teo1978
Public bug reported:

I suspended (note: suspended, not hibernated) and resumed. I do this all
the time and usually the computer immediately reconnects to my wifi
router.

This time it didn't. So I clicked on the network icon and there were no
wifi networks in the list.

I turned wifi off and on via Fn+F3, which usually forces a re-scan of
available wifi networks. However, it would still list no network. I
repeated several times with no luck.

I checked my phone which was connected to the same wifi network and
working.

So I restarted the computer and this time it immediately connected, and
also now the other available networks are listed.

[Bug 1594088] [NEW] Pitivi fails in Ubuntu 16.04 because no python3/gst-python

2016-06-19 Thread Masi
Public bug reported:

Pitivi wants python3 based gst-python. Do `sudo apt-get install pitivi`.
Do `pitivi`

Missing soft dependency:
- pycanberra not found on the system
-> enables sound notifications when rendering is complete
Missing soft dependency:
- GnomeDesktop not found on the system
-> file thumbnails provided by GNOME's thumbnailers
Missing soft dependency:

2016-06-19 Thread neomilium
Hello Brian,

I confirm that I now can build and use HeeksCAD, with its module
HeeksCNC, both depending on OCE.

I used liboce-visualization-dev/xenial-proposed package and regular
building of HeeksCAD and HeeksCNC works as expected.

Thanks !

[Bug 1594046] Re: lts 16.04 crashes frequently on acer TC-605

2016-06-19 Thread David Johnston
The suggestion from
http://askubuntu.com/questions/776069/ubuntu-16-04-freezes-during-use
which I found using the search mentioned in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1578944

to addintel_idle.max_cstate=1
to the options on GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
doesnt seem to have worked.

I applied it to the default grub option, did sudo update-grub,
restarted, logged on, did a few things then went away to do some other
stuff. When I resumed working on the machine, it had frozen, except for
the mouse pointer, which was able to be moved around, but no click or
keyboard action got any response from the system.

(the initial suggestion from the ask ubuntu answer referred to above was
to replace "quiet splash" with intel_idle.max_cstate=1, but the later
comment said just adding it worked for that person, so I tried adding
it. I will now try replacing (i.e. removing the "quiet splash" as well
as adding the above) instead and see if that works)

meanwhile, one of the items I read mentioned same mouse pointer was able
to be controlled but all else frozen. Will search again for that and see
if it had another solution which I can try after I check the replace
referred to above.

[Bug 1504445] Re: FocalTech touchpad stops working after suspend

2016-06-19 Thread Austin Imperial
This bug also affects my Asus X455LF-WX055T with FocalTech Touchpad with
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed.

I noticed a change in `xinput list` before and after suspending

Before I suspend, my `xinput list` contains `PS/2 FocalTech FocalTech
Touchpad`:

xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2[master pointer (3)]

When I wake it up after suspending it, my `xinput list` does not contain
`PS/2 FocalTech FocalTech Touchpad` but it was replaced(?) by `AT Raw
Set 2 keyboard id=15 [slave keyboard (3)]` which was not present before
I suspend:

[Bug 1594092] [NEW] will not upgrade from 14.04 LTS to 16.04

2016-06-19 Thread Michael Crider
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1587635] Re: also, in kde 5.6.4 from backports - plasmashell memory leak

2016-06-19 Thread Lemmiwinks
I also see this memory leak with the nvidia driver v346 and the nouveau driver
as well, so no difference here for me.
What we need is a backport of these two patches mentioned in this KDE bug
report:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344879#c122

otherwise plasmashell will continue to eat more and more memory with
every plasma screen update, like opening a plasmoid, systray item menu,
etc.

I tried Fedora 24, which is build against QT 5.6 and it does not suffer
from this problem.

[Bug 1594097] [NEW] [Xenial] Geany 1.27 eats all the CPU and RAM then the session freezes

2016-06-19 Thread Mélodie
Public bug reported:

Hello,

since a week or maybe a little more I can't use Geany anymore in Xenial.
It just gets my session to freeze. When I reach successfully a tty and
am able to start htop, I can see it use almost all the CPU and most of
the RAM + the system uses swap. Once I successfully kill it's process,
still using htop, I can regain control on my session.

I have done a large strace, which I uploaded here (12 MB)
http://meets.free.fr/files/strace-geany.txt

We can see it seeking for quite a few files in the system that it can't
found. Can someone fix it or tell me how to fix it myself incase I'd be
missing a package?

[Bug 1447815] Re: codecs error

2016-06-19 Thread Paul White
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information.

The bug title says that you have a codecs error but you also say that
you can't access the real site. Did you mean http://www.real.com/ ? How
is this a codecs error? You also say that you downloaded mplayer from
Hungary. Was this from an Hungarian Ubuntu mirror or another program
called Mplayer?

You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

I'm sorry that is has taken so long to get back to you but if you're
still having problems please provide us with further information and
change the bug status back to "New".

Thanks!

[Bug 1594097] Re: [Xenial] Geany 1.27 eats all the CPU and RAM then the session freezes

2016-06-19 Thread Colomban Wendling
> open("/home/melodie/badblocks.log.txt", O_RDONLY) = 9
> fstat(9, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1547706436, ...}) = 0

You try to open a 1547706436 bytes (1.5Gb) file: /home/melodie/badblocks.log.txt
Geany will try and load this file into memory, which as it records a style
information byte with each data byte, will lead to at the very least 3Gb of
memory. It's likely to use even more temporarily at some points (I wouldn't be
surprised to see +1 times the file size when passing the buffer to the editing
component, Scintilla, so that would make it 4.5Gb).

Yes, it's kinda unfortunate, but doing it like this has other advantages (well,
temporary duplication only makes things simpler, no other advantages).
Realistically, the best we could do is ask the users whether they really want
to open such huge files, allowing to back off early.

If the file is loaded automatically at startup because it's part of the
session, you can either drop the session with the `-s` command-line
switch, or manually edit your ~/.config/geany/geany.conf (with something
else than Geany, or `geany -i`), and remove the `FILE_NAME_` line
corresponding to that file.

Note, though that in my case I don't see any error if I launch it in a
terminal. The system halts for a few seconds while loading the file, and
then eog just crashes. It doesn't give me the chance to send an error
report.

I am having the same issue.

The 5 key repeats using a Logitech K350 keyboard.

It seems to happen mostly right after a mouse click on my Logitech
mouse.

[Bug 1594104] [NEW] GNOME Music stuck at "The contents of your Music folder will appear here"

2016-06-19 Thread David D Lowe
Public bug reported:

When I open GNOME Music, I see this screenshot:
http://i.imgur.com/L5NLiBR.png?1

It simply displays the message: "Hey DJ. The contents of your Music
folder will appear here."

To fix it, you have to enable tracker by running `tracker control -s`,
and then close the application and re-open.

What I expected to happen:

- The application should check whether Tracker is running, and tell me to turn
it on if it's not.
- The application should display some sort of animated progress indicator so
that I can tell that it's doing something.
- The application should not require a restart to see added music.

I'm not sure if Tracker is meant to be enabled by default in Ubuntu or
not, but either way, this bug still applies.

[Bug 1576060] Re: Gnome Schedule in Ubuntu 16.04?

2016-06-19 Thread Georg Lipps
Tried to install gnome-schedule 2.3.0 from source and ran into many
dependencies problems; gave it up. Is this something for an experienced
user to set this up with the new snappy format?

Used and liked gnome-schedule a lot - sad it is not available any more.

[Bug 1594117] [NEW] Equalizer for GNOME MPlayer

2016-06-19 Thread Juan P. Tamayo
Public bug reported:

I think it would be really interesting to add an equalizer to GNOME MPlayer,
that comes as preinstalled open source software for the lubuntu versions.
Another thing, it's that when the software user check the repeat or the random
play boxes, when the software restarts, the user have to check again the same
box.

Thanks a lot

[Bug 1589585] Re: Ubuntu Software tab Installed refreshing endlessly every 2 seconds

2016-06-19 Thread grofaty
Hi,
just a quick question. I also have a problem with audio. Is this problem
related to "fwupd and audio"? When starting "VLC Media Player" I get error:
==
Audio output failed:
The audio device "default" could not be used:
Connection refused.
==

looking into "System Setting" | Sound and on Ouput and Input there are
no devices specified and on "Sound Effects" there is only "default". I
know this was working before seeing the devices here. The "default" from
VLC error is probably the "default" from "Sound Effects".

I was searching the web and found this "USB audio device is not
recognized after startup in 16.04" with URL:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fwupd/+bug/1574079 and there
is reference to "fwupd" and gnome-software.

What I am wondering maybe there is common cause for my problem "gnome-
sofware" endless spinning (current bug report) and VLC/audio problem.

Looks like there were some fixed developed and are currently in
"proposed" repository.

What do you think? Are this problems related?

P.S. I have also posted a question on Lenovo forum, to see if someone
knows how to disable (if possible) figerprint device in BIOS:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T61-and-prior-T-series/How-to-
disable-Figerprint-Reader-in-BIOS-or-in-Ubuntu-16-04/td-p/3353318

[Bug 1576060] Re: Gnome Schedule in Ubuntu 16.04?

2016-06-19 Thread Robert Orzanna
Dear Georg,

Just curious:

Why don't you want to run version 2.2 which is still available as a deb
and installs fine on Ubuntu 16.04?

What's the added benefit of version 2.3?

~Robert

[Bug 1448164] Re: runit cannot be installed (Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused)

2016-06-19 Thread Pablo Carranza
The workaround works perfectly fine, I've just installed runit in xenial
this way.

Thanks Tony.

[Bug 1585008] Re: Windows 7 guests hang on bootup when qxl video is used

2016-06-19 Thread Anthony de Beus
I'd like to point out that this bug is a regression. I previously
installed Win 7 using qxl just as Mr Johnston installed W2012R2, and got
the generic drivers until I was able to install qxl drivers. Neither qxl
nor stdvga work any more, only cirrus, and that only seems to work under
Seabios now, whereas it used to function under OVMF, yes even for
Windows 7. As I'm using Arch, and haven't reinstalled Windows 7 every
day, I can't say when this bug appeared.

[Bug 1574079] Re: USB audio device is not recognized after startup in 16.04

2016-06-19 Thread Welly Wu
I read this entire bug report and I added the FWUPD PPA and followed the
directions. I own an Oppo Digital HA-1 desktop DAC and headphone
amplifier. After unplugging it, shutting down, booting up, logging in,
plugging it back in, I can not see my HA-1 in sound devices and it is
stuck at DSD 12.288 MHz. I can not hear audio using it and my Sennheiser
HD-800 headphones.

[Bug 1548850] Re: Suspend-Resume freezes the computer completely

2016-06-19 Thread flrtx
Thanks, Christopher, for advising the BIOS update.

However, it didn’t improve the situation. The system is still completely
frozen when I reopen the display.

The output of 'sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date' is the following:
F.39
05/26/2015

[Bug 1325503] Re: gdb reports 'corrupt stack' on armhf without symbols

2016-06-19 Thread Nonny Moose
I am running Ubuntu Mate Xenial and gdb always reports the following bt,
symbols or not:
```
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x76fd9822 in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux-armhf.so.3
(gdb) bt
#0  0x76fd9822 in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux-armhf.so.3
#1  0x76fd983a in ?? () from /lib/ld-linux-armhf.so.3
Backtrace stopped: previous frame identical to this frame (corrupt stack?)
Is this related?
```

Re: [Bug 1574079] Re: USB audio device is not recognized after startup in 16.04

2016-06-19 Thread Mario Limonciello
The ppa doesn't actually have the same fix that went into proposed. Can you
please make sure you enable proposed and then check again?

If you are still having problems please confirm the version of fwupd that
is installed using

# apt policy fwupd
