[Bug 1402957] Re: kernel panic on bootup exit code: 0x000000b0

2015-01-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stanimir, as per http://www.asus.com/us/ROG_ROG/G75VW/HelpDesk_Download/ an
update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (223). If you
update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it
change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened,
and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then
please mark this report Status Confirmed.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1302090] Re: Dell Alienware 14, Speaker sound output is mono until a headphone jack is plugged

2015-01-04 Thread Guy
Hi,

I did the instructions in #30 (Pietro) but I had to choose the option "install
boot override" with "apply now" the device was allways occupied.
Anyway, now it showing the same in alsamixer as #31 (cesar) but to get the
subwoofer working I have to plug the headphones into one of the two (headphone
or headset) connectors. As soon as I remove them I loose the subwoofer !

What I'm doing wrong ?

I'm on Ubuntu server + xfce4 with his mixer (alsa) which shows also a
setting switches > "speaker" that enable/disable de front speaker.

Thank you for any help.

[Bug 950662] Re: Waiting for network message on bootup when all network devices are up

2015-01-04 Thread C. Jeffery Small
I would like to second that this problem is active in 14.10.

System: Custom server with dual Intel Xeon E5-2630 CPU and dual ethernet ports
OS: Bare metal install of Ubuntu server 14.10 plus xfce4 (xubuntu) desktop

After the OS install, the system has consistently been hanging as
reported above during the boot sequence.

Following the boot message: "Starting configure network device"

/etc/init/failsafe.conf displays these messages with the associated two
minute sleeps:

Waiting for network configuration...
Waiting up to 60 more seconds for network configuration...
Booting system without full network configuration...

However, shortly after the original "Starting configure network device"
message, I am able to ping both network interfaces from a remote
machine. It appears that although the interfaces are configured and
active, plymouth remains confused and fails to issue a successful
return code. This system was automatically configuring the two
interfaces as p1p1 and p2p1, so I have written an /etc/udev/rules.d/70
-persistent-net.rules file to rename these back to a more respectable
eth0 and eth1. However, the hanging problem preceded any of this
renaming activity.

This delay is a real pain and appears to affect quite a few people. It
would be good to pin down the nature of the problem and fix it once and
for all. This appears to extend back to at least 2011 and can be found
elsewhere under bug-ids 885596 and 881079.

Here are the particulars for my configuration:

[Bug 1407400] [NEW] WLAN interface throughput drops thanks to NetworkManager

2015-01-04 Thread flux242
Public bug reported:

Here I have a pic of the wifi periodic drops http://i.imgur.com/JhRVP8F.png.
Server is connected to the router per LAN. I'm connecting to the server through
the router's WLAN. Bytes are transferred in one direction using nc. The graph
at the top is the CPU load on the router, another one below is the router's
wlan1(5GHz) iface throughput in MB/s. I thought that the router is guilty so I
measured cpu and wlan iface statistics on the router. But it turned out that
the problem lies on the client side and on the NetworkManager to be precise. As
these drops happens exactly with 120s periodicity I assume that it's the
background station scanning nm does even when connected to a station! To prove
that the nm is to blame I deactivated it and activated the wlan iface manually.
And here is how it looks like without nm - http://i.imgur.com/UWdUg4y.png

I consider this bug as major.

[Bug 1407403] [NEW] Suspend option missing in xfce-power-manager-settings and many greyed out

2015-01-04 Thread Cefn
Public bug reported:

Even though xfce-power-manager-settings reported it can suspend, suspend
is authorized and a lid is detected, no option to suspend on lid close
appeared and lots of options were greyed out.

I was investigating because lid close didn't trigger suspend on a
previous occasion.

However, after running the report below, now the expected options have
just appeared again! I've no idea what was different between the
different invocations.

[Bug 1406524] Re: Ubuntu Online Account fail if user is in /home2 (in second internal SATA HD)

2015-01-04 Thread Davide Mannarelli
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
- I found this bug when i had to use Empathy:
- it's impossible to use an account (google, irc, and so on) in empathy if the
user's home is on /home2 in second hd (this is SATA HD).
- It's ok for all users in /home inside the first HD (this is SSD hd). I can
confirm after tries and tries.
+ I found a strange error in Ubuntu Online Account when i had to use Empathy:
+ it's impossible to use an account (google, irc, and so on) in Empathy,
Evolution and others, if the user's home is in /home2 on second hd (this is a
SSD HD).
+ But it's ok for all users in /home inside the first HD (this is SATA HD). I
can confirm after tries and tries.
  Any idea to solve this?
  Thanks
-
- Update: I tried to install and use Evolution (just to see if the problem
- is in the chat or in the authentication) and the problem persists:
- Evolution is not able to use the accounts inside "Ubuntu Online Account"

[Bug 1240198] Re: [SRU]Wrong keyboard layout active after booting into desktop

2015-01-04 Thread John Belton
This problem has reappeared yesterday after quite a time but as there were no
new updates I can not think of a possible cause for it to reappear. There was
an update to the anacron software and I wonder if that update could have
"restored" the default installation keyboard layout somehow. Clicking on my
selected keyboard layout seems to have restored my preferred layout but I
noticed it was reset to US keyboard layout after switching on and logging in
this morning.
I haven't had any problems with the numlock LED so far.

bluetooth (not installed by default). The default bluetooth tray icon
provided by blueman is not an indicator and should appear in the
notification area. You can disable it by deactivating the blueman
autostart launcher (Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application
Autostart).

2015-01-04 Thread Vdragon
I found that this message generated because I manually disabled the
modemmanager Upstart service, which isn't a bug since NetworkManager
needs it anyway.

The motivation of disabling this service is that it's starts no matter
if there's modem connected and it abnormally generates redundant
"restart" messages during system shutdown, if anyone have concern of
this issue please file a new bug.

[Bug 1402957] Re: kernel panic on bootup exit code: 0x000000b0

2015-01-04 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Stanimir, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are
irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)
following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow
additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into
the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test
the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version
specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please
add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly
shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.19-rc2

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil
icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 90085] Re: When /tmp is mounted noexec, preconfigure fails

2015-01-04 Thread Martino Dell'Ambrogio
> by invoking the executable with the help of the dynamic Linux loader.

Although you are right, in real world vulnerability exploitation you
often don't control much of the environment, sometimes even the way an
executable gets executed.

The reason most people mount tmp with noexec is that it is world
writable. Thanks to that, even services with explicit reduced rights can
leverage the file system when remotely exploiting a vulnerability.

By using noexec (and nodev, nosuid...) you add security. You don't make it
impossible to exploit, you make it more difficult.
Why do you think ASLR, DEP and many other protection techniques are still very
much in use, while they are constantly circumvented ? Difficulty of
exploitation is one of the major points of risk management. With a bit of
effort, you grow the resources needed to exploit a vulnerability, which in turn
makes it less likely to be exploited.

While comment #19 already stated a valid workaround for this bug, it
would really be a good sign if security aware parties would join the
discussion... even after 8 years.

Looking at syslog I know see apparmor is denying mknod creation on the
directory :

Jan 4 14:41:21 minipc kernel: [127823.552343] audit: type=1400

[Bug 1407385] Re: Sync latexila 3.14.2-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2015-01-04 Thread Matthieu Baerts
Hello,

Thank you for this bug report!

> moved rubber from depends to suggested

I agree that we should remove it.

> added texlive-latex-extra as suggested

It's just a suggestion for those who wants to be sure that they have
almost all LaTeX packages. I think it's better to keep it.

Note that for TexMaker, "latex-beamer" and "texlive-latex-extra" are
recommended. LyX recommends many texlive-latex packages ; Gummy
recommends "texlive-extra-utils", "texlive-latex-base" and "texlive-
xetex". Added some packages as suggested ones can help beginners I
think.

> added texlive-latex-recommended, hicolor-icon-theme as recommended
packages

"hicolor-icon-theme" is just the default theme for the icons, most users should
have it. I guess it's not a big deal if it is not added but it's maybe better
to keep it.
I think that before, "texlive" package didn't have a dependence to
"texlive-latex-recommended" (maybe very old packages) but I see that by adding
"texlive", we also add "texlive-latex-recommended".

Note that on Ubuntu, LaTeXMk is a mandatory dependence, not just
recommended. Of course, LaTeXila can work without LaTeXMk but without
it, the user will have errors because LaTeXMk is the default builder.
But I agree that most users will install recommended packages.

I think "gsettings-desktop-schemas" package is also needed because
LaTeXila is compiled with "gsettings-desktop-schemas-dev" and the
settings for the fonts, etc. are defined by xml files provided by this
"gsettings-desktop-schemas" package.

@Sébastien: may you confirm? Do you agree with that? :-)

@Jackson: Yes, I think we can sync latexila 3.14.2-1 from Debian
unstable. I'll try to report my suggestions to Tanguy ASAP!

[Bug 1406767] Re: High ACPI event count on Asus K750L, causing ~12% non-stop CPU utilization

2015-01-04 Thread Nikola Nikolov
Hi Christopher,

git bisect found the first good commit, here's the full output from the
last command:

bd9b2f9aff26c185c1f8e0cd08a850ee4ace391a is the first bad commit
commit bd9b2f9aff26c185c1f8e0cd08a850ee4ace391a
Author: Rafael J. Wysocki
Date: Mon Jul 14 22:41:41 2014 +0200

ACPI / scan: No implicit wake notification for buttons

The ACPI device enumeration code in Linux assumes that buttons always
are wakeup devices, so it calls acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake() for them
which leads to undesirable side effects. Namely, that function sets
up implicit device wake notification mechanism for a given GPE if
there is no handler method in the ACPI namespace, which from the
ACPICA's perspective means that there always is a way to handle
that GPE if enabled. However, we don't handle wake notify events
for buttons, so if there are no handler methods for their GPEs in
the namespace, enabling a button GPE at run time leads to a GPE
storm in some cases (the GPE triggers, ACPICA carries out the
implicit wake notification for it which isn't handled, so the
GPE triggers again and so on).

To prevent that from happening use acpi_mark_gpe_for_wake()
instead of acpi_setup_gpe_for_wake() for buttons which will cause
ACPICA to only enable button GPEs if there are handler methods for
the in the namespace.

[Bug 1407434] Re: missing dirs /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/channel/target while creating centos 7 vm

2015-01-04 Thread PascalC
WORKAROUND for those who want to go on with MV creation while this bug
is valid :

0. do not quit virt-manager vm creation

1. locate apparmor profile for your VM with ls-ltr
/etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-*
(the long string with numbers is your vm UUID - look inside to find your vm
name)

2. set this apparmor profil in complain mode
# aa-complain
/etc/apparmor.d/libvirt/libvirt-73aa79f1-0023-4e37-8001-5be78e884348 (for
example)

3. go on with vm creation - it will succeed
