[Bug 1043149] Re: [regression since 12.04] ntfs-3g refuses to mount Windows8 not using hibernation

2012-09-21 Thread Jean-Pierre
AFAIK, leaving Windows 8 by selecting "restart" and rebooting to Linux
is safe. Also using the Windows dual-boot manager is safe, because it
syncs the cached data to disk before starting another OS. The unsafe
situation is booting directly into another OS through another boot
manager such as grub.

The test based on hiberfil.sys is only relevant for the Windows system
partition. Testing the logfile is apparently better (mind the single quotes,
and replace win8 by your mount point) :
head -c 30 '/win8/$LogFile' | tail -c 4 | od -t x1
If you get "01 00 01 00" you are in a safe situation, if you get "00 00 02 00"
you are in an unsafe situation. This is to be confirmed, please report what you
get.

You would guess that no ntfs-3g version if able to play the new rules,
so beware.

2012-09-21 Thread Schmankerl
After testing 5.16.0-0ubuntu1 some days without any compiz crashes I
think it fixed stability problems. I am working with the internal and an
external screen and before this upgrade sometimes compiz crashed by
clicking on the launcher to start an application. I did not get that
error by adjusting screen settings.

2012-09-21 Thread ojordan
Revisiting this, the "Ubuntu" comes from os-prober, or more precisely
the file /etc/lsb-release. The DISRIB_ID field should be labelled
"Lubuntu" and not "Ubuntu". Grub2 has the same problem as yaboot.

[Bug 1050918] Re: Segmentation fault when exiting python after importing pyexiv2

2012-09-21 Thread Olivier Tilloy
For some reason, instantiating the exiv2_version tuple outside of the
boost module declaration causes the segfault, whereas it previously
worked. This is easily fixed by moving the instantiation inside the
BOOST_PYTHON_MODULE block.

[Bug 1053856] [NEW] switchable graphics HP Envy 14 Ubuntu 12.04

2012-09-21 Thread sean.h.m...@gmail.com
Public bug reported:

I have found the following issues when following the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HybridGraphics:
--

To have permanent write permissions to the switch file, add the
following line, replacing USERNAME with your username, to
/etc/init.d/rc.local:

chown USERNAME /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
--
I do not add the above command to /etc/init.d/rc.local, i simply just chown the
above file as adding the line into the rc.local file does nothing at all and
prevents me from using the script by adding a laucher and resulting to me
running sudo su in the terminal first.

In addition to the above I have also found that within the gxmessage
script that there is no need for the gnome-session-quit command and all
that is required is the following at the top of the script:

if [ $EUID != 0 ]; then
gksudo "$0" "$@"
exit $?
fi

Sorry - I run under KDE usually and the recording device doesn't appear in
kmixer. It's quite possible that this is a KDE bug though, but having said
that the other pulse devices appear fine. The emulated PSEye device also
appears if I load the alsa source module in PA.

It does appear fine in KDE's hardware settings though, so it seems as though
it's just the mixer that's broken.

I suspect the mixer error is pertinent :)

I can but after booting I have to unplug and re-plug it back in before
anything comes through.

Re: [Bug 1008117] [NEW] Nautilus suggests option for mounting hibernated ntfs partitions that could lead to data loss

2012-09-21 Thread Austin Dempewolff
Similarly, this bug was not filed because of the mounting denial, but
rather because the denial lists the command for a potential dangerous
action without explaining what it would do and the data loss it could cause.

[Bug 1049612] Re: Libre Offices global menu does not appear randomly when opening the application

2012-09-21 Thread Pierre Poulain
Bug still exist with kernel 3.5.0-15 and after system update up to 9/21
(after Beta 2 freeze). I confirm what wrote Shanekiper, whic is that
when I

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-gtk

then, I can use the Libreoffice in a "windows like" design. When I re-
install it (actually libreoffice-gtk 1:3.6.1~rc2-1ubuntu5 ) then the bug
re-appears. Along with it seems another bug: selecting text on screen
(on Writer) to cut or copy is instable. The selection usually vanish
before I have a chance to Ctrl-C.

In the "windows like" environment the behaviour is normal. If I can help
in any way

[Bug 1023755] Re: Precise kernel locks up while dd to /dev/mapper files > 1Gb (was: Unable to delete volume)

2012-09-21 Thread Stefan Bader
Just while thinking about it (not yet run a reproduction), I think I can guess
around where the problem might be. Both the original volume and the snapshot
are set to 2G (at least in the example). The way a snapshot volume works is
that it contains a mapping table. Sectors that have not changed in either the
original or the snapshot will refer to the original volume. Changes to the
origin will cause a copy of the original sector into the exception storage and
the table to be updated to point to the exception storage. Writes to the
snapshot go into the exception storage directly and the table is updated as
before. For this reason the snapshot volume is not a plain volume but is used
to store the mapping table and the exception sectors. The table gets bigger
with the original volume's size. So I guess around this 2G size a 2G snapshot
cannot store exceptions to all sectors, which is what happens when zeroing the
whole origin.
Theoretically I would think a write should return an error in that case. But
maybe this is a problem caused by having the VG mapped onto a loop device. Also
the whole system hanging is unexpected. Could the lack of propagating IO error
possibly cause the dd not to see the end of the device, so in the end all
memory is exhausted by buffers that cannot be written?

This potentially can be a problem too, if the user of the used device (I
assume the origin is used to export and allow its user to update the
contents while the snapshot retains the unmodified state) happens to
modify _all_ sectors (though I think that will be quite rare. So much
for theories. Need to find out whether that is actually true. Might be
worth trying to make the snapshot a bit bigger and see what happens.
Ultimately I guess one wants to convert the snapshot storage into a
linear volume and then erase it (or have it erased while dropping).

[Bug 985645] Re: Remmina crashed under connection via RDP

2012-09-21 Thread Aaron Roydhouse
Sweet! Thanks Andy. 'Upgrading' to 0.9.3 has fix all the Remmina problem
I was having; the black on launch, the copy and paste, the constant
lock-ups, disconnections, and crashing. It was so bad I had already
switched back to rdesktop. All fixed now!

I should have known as soon as Ubuntu chose Remmina as its official app
I was in trouble; a syndrome now know as the 'Unity Effect' :-)

[Bug 1038055] Re: graphics fail to initialise correctly, in kvm with cirrus graphics (after LUKS install)

2012-09-21 Thread Stefan Bader
@Dmitrijs, I don't have it in a PPA or elsewhere right now because I am
not really happy with the current results. Due to the delay between
releasing and reacquiring the framebuffer, X rarely gets up and I saw
the VTs be stuck, too (had to ssh in and restart lightdm). The best
work-around right now seems to be to use GRUB_TERMINAL=console in
/etc/defaults/grub. But I can also put the patches kernel packages
somewhere and let you decide.

[Bug 1053869] [NEW] KDialog takes minutes to show up

2012-09-21 Thread kenorb
Public bug reported:

Originally reported here:

Basically any call to KDialog generates some dbus messages which are
timeouting after 25 seconds, 4 of them makes 1 minute to run simple
popup.

As suggested there, this could be a problem with some kded module
blocking the D-Bus system.

I could upload the file: /etc/apt/sources.list
But I can't , because of another KDialog bug, which is for me the blocker of

[Bug 1053870] Crash report cannot be processed

2012-09-21 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for dbus: package version 1.6.4-1ubuntu2 dbgsym
version 1.6.4-1ubuntu1
outdated debug symbol package for libdbus-1-3: package version 1.6.4-1ubuntu2
dbgsym version 1.6.4-1ubuntu1
outdated debug symbol package for initscripts: package version
2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu13 dbgsym version 2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu11.1

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Bug 1053809] Re: package xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: package xserver-xorg-video-intel is already installed and configured

2012-09-21 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1053794] Re: crash on resume. Linux 3.5.0-15-generic

2012-09-21 Thread Nathan Weber
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

I have had problems resuming from start since I started using 12.04.

Now I have a worse problem with the 12.10 kernel.

in 12.04 i would come back from long resumes (short were ok) to a black
screen, no way to get any display. had to hard reboot.

Now when I resume I get text output that a crash has occured and I must
  reboot.

- It might be of not that I have blacklisted mei due to the watchdog
- warning after resuming.
+ It might be of not that I have blacklisted mei due to the watchdog warning
after resuming.
