[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 64bit completely freezes frequently
@ Norm. That's bad. I wanted to try the 32 bit version as I encounter the freezes with the 64 bit version. But if the 32 bit version does the same than that's no way out. Did you try the 64 bit version as well? It's necessary for the solution of this bug to know if both versions (64 and 32 bit) have this bug. I will probably try the 32 bit version as live version and test if it does have the same lock ups. If not I will install it and test it further. I would still love to use Ubuntu 12.04 and I don't mind to use the 32 bit version as the 64 bit doesn't really have any direct advantages for me. Strange that the importance of the bug is still undecided and has not yet been assigned to anyone. 25 users that take the trouble to report this bug must imply that there are at least hundreds, if not thousands of users running into trouble with this bug. And this bug is a real show stopper as it completely freezes the system! I ask my self what the developers are doing? [Bug 270395] Re: cannot resolve windows host name
This problem is still unsolved. The host names of windows PCs are not visible to Linux programs with a regular installation of Samba, i.e. from Linux 'ping win_pc' does not work, but from windows 'ping linux_pc' does work. Also, 'nmblookup win_pc' works, while 'nslookup win_pc' does not work. Installing winbind and changing the nsswitch.conf's host: definition to 'host: files dns wins' fix the problem. This is not obvious to a naive user. I suggest changing the host definition in nsswitch.conf on installation of winbind I also suggest installing winbind together with Samba This would improve the user experience when working in a mixed Ubuntu/Windows network environment. The whole point of the Samba package is to make it possible to work in such a mixed environment. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/270395 Title: cannot resolve windows host name To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/270395/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For people who still want a Gnome2-like desktop with a vertical panel like the one described in this bug report: We have recently extended the the Xfce (Xubuntu) panel to support a vertical panel/horizontal items layout. Changes go well beyond the tasklist. Starting from Xfce 4.10, vertical "deskbar" is one of three supported panel modes and all plugins are (expected to be) aware of it. [Bug 998658] [NEW] install aborts before completion; MD5SUM correct for download
Public bug reported: installing 12.04 over 11.10 using downloaded ISO (md5sum correct) burnt to DVD. Install aborted about 30% of way through installation after copying files. All parameters w.r.t keyboard, locale, users already sey. The download updates was not checked, but system was connected to internet. Partition size large enough; using a separate /home directory (as existed for 11.10). Will attempt reinstall and expect system is dead in the meantime. If fails a second time, will install 11.10 and then upgrade to 12.04.
