[Bug 891946] [NEW] taglib: FLAC stream corrupted

2011-11-18 Thread ekpyrosis
Public bug reported:

Hi,
Running the collection scanner in Amarok gives the following error:

kmimetype filetype guessing failed for /home/bloem/Media/Music/Thievery
Corporation/Thievery Corporation - Modular Systems/Modular Systems.txt
TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate.
TagLib: MPEG::Header::parse() -- Invalid sample rate.

TagLib: FLAC::File::scan() -- FLAC stream not found
TagLib: FLAC::File::scan() -- FLAC stream not found
TagLib: FLAC::File::scan() -- FLAC stream not found
TagLib: FLAC::File::scan() -- FLAC stream corrupted

As can be seen, TagLib now hangs on a txt file (Modular Systems.txt ),
but in other occasions it hangs on mp3 files or pdf's. All with the same
error report: FLAC stream corrupted.

System: Kubuntu 11.10 (clean install, re-use of home directory)
Taglib: 1.7

Kind regards,

Ekpyrosis

[Bug 891947] Re: Desktop not completely displayed after install

2011-11-18 Thread Joe Millenbach
** Description changed:

After installing my desktop is shifted to the left and up (can't see
that part of the screen). That seems to indicate the wrong resolution
or frequency to me. I'm using DVI output and a DVI to HDMI cable
(monitor was sold as a monitor, not TV). 1920x1200 is default
resolution and it looks like that is what is being displayed, but I
think it is using 50.0 Hz (* marks it in xrandr -q output, and is only
option for that resolution) instead of something closer to 60 or 59.

- I've tried reinstalling, with no change. My screen works fine while
- inside the installer environment or the "try out Ubuntu" option (whole
- desktop displayed). I originally had my system working with an old
- video card, but it broke after switching to a newer card (from Nvidia
- 8800 GTX to Nvidia 260 216). More recently I replaced the 260 with an
- Nvidia GTX 480. All of these have worked fine inside Windows 7. This
- originally showed up in Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest Nvidia drivers (I
- manually installed newer versions to match what CUDA 4.0 SDK wanted).
- The fresh install was Ubuntu 11.10 and whatever default driver it
- offers.

[Bug 890569] Re: Kernel NULL pointer deference in __d_move from vfs_stat ioctl

2011-11-18 Thread Pauli
It was one time crash only for me. But upstream doesn't have much
changes in that area.

Only patches that I quickly could name even potentially related are in sysfs
side:
f6d90b4f9ce018bff429d6e01ee672de712b8641 sysfs: Make sysfs_rename safe with
sysfs_dirents in rbtrees
Mikulas Patocka 's rb_tree changes.

in dcache side there is more interesting commits but only one of them
talk about d_parent not being NULL. But looking (upstream) code d_parent
shouldn't ever be NULL.

If same applies to 3.0 kernel then It starts to look like some race
condition that I happened to hit only once.

[Bug 888633] Re: picture from webcam has no color and some artifacts

2011-11-18 Thread ^rooker
I can also confirm that the image is correct with <= 640x480, but all
resolutions above have distorted chroma.
It used to work in Natty.

btw:
I've tried a workaround suggested by "Juan Francisco Contreras García"
(juanfcocontreras) in bug-thread #838739
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/cheese/+bug/838739/comments/16), and installed
"libv4l" from PPA.
Now all resolutions work fine again.

My webcam is (lsusb output):

[Bug 885651] Re: fresh install of ubuntu-server fails to boot

2011-11-18 Thread Joe Millenbach
I've hit this fairly repeatedly (always hit a grub2 error) on my system
after install. I'm doing a dual boot Windows 7 / Ubuntu 11.10 install
where I delete the existing Ubuntu install. I've fixed it every time
with instructions from the web that had me...

Boot with install media and select "try out Ubuntu"
Open a terminal
Inside terminal run (first command needs to be tweaked to point at your install
partition - /dev/sda5 part)...
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

Please don't do that; it's extra code, extra documentation, extra
testing, extra bugs. Putting in a hidden setting assumes all the costs
of the setting with relatively few of the benefits.

[Bug 891947] [NEW] Desktop not completely displayed after install

2011-11-18 Thread Joe Millenbach
Public bug reported:

After installing my desktop is shifted to the left and up (can't see
that part of the screen). That seems to indicate the wrong resolution
or frequency to me. I'm using DVI output and a DVI to HDMI cable
(monitor was sold as a monitor, not TV). 1920x1200 is default
resolution and it looks like that is what is being displayed, but I
think it is using 50.0 Hz (* marks it in xrandr -q output, and is only
option for that resolution) instead of something closer to 60 or 59.

I've tried reinstalling, with no change. My screen works fine while inside the
installer environment or the "try out Ubuntu" option (whole desktop displayed).
I originally had my system working with an old video card, but it broke after
switching to a newer card (from Nvidia 8800 GTX to Nvidia 260 216). More
recently I replaced the 260 with an Nvidia GTX 480. All of these have worked
fine inside Windows 7. This originally showed up in Ubuntu 10.10 with the
latest Nvidia drivers (I manually installed newer versions to match what CUDA
4.0 SDK wanted). The fresh install was Ubuntu 11.10 and whatever default

- I've tried reinstalling, but my screen works fine while inside the
- installer environment or the "try out Ubuntu" option (whole desktop
- displayed). I originally had my system working with an old video card,
- but it broke after switching to a newer card (from Nvidia 8800 GTX to
- Nvidia 260 216). More recently I replaced the 260 with an Nvidia GTX
- 480. All of these have worked fine inside Windows 7. This originally
- showed up in Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest Nvidia drivers (I manually
- installed newer versions to match what CUDA 4.0 SDK wanted). The fresh
- install was Ubuntu 11.10 and whatever default driver it offers.

[Bug 891947]

2011-11-18 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/891947/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 872219] Re: Applications lens "disappears"

2011-11-18 Thread S.O.E. Ansems
I'm giving up unity. It is not ready as a stable release yet and i feel
that canonical should recognize this and stop force feeding unity to all
ubuntu users, all newbies may run screaming back to windows after a bad
experience with unity and never come back.

There are too many issues that have cost too much of my time. I've
switched to gnome3 and it works like charm. As a bonus, the system seems
to be more responsive as well (under unity i sometimes got short freezes
for no apparent reason)

Good luck!

[Bug 853244] Re: Acer Aspire 5742Z brightness keys not working

2011-11-18 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I just tried with the Oneiric final CD (kernel 3.0.0-12-generic), and had the
exact same problems, i.e.:
 * with the default boot options the laptop brightness keys made the brightness
indicator window show, but the brightness wasn't actually changed, and
 * with acpi_osi=Linux in the isolinux command line, the brightness keys were
indeed modifying the brightness, but the indicator window didn't appear.

[Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 driver is buggy for NVidia GeForce FX series

2011-11-18 Thread gerstrong
Blacklisting the nouveau drivers (the module) and installing the latest
official drivers solve most of the related FX problems.

http://www.nvidia.de/object/linux-display-amd64-173.14.31-driver-de.html

Could the Ubuntu Team please update the package to that version?
173.14.30 has some bugs using FX cards.

Thanks!

[Bug 891604] Re: Kernel crashes after mounting Windows share with CIFS

2011-11-18 Thread AutoStatic
@ #4 (jsalisbury):

I'll be closely monitoring the system log regarding the CIFS mount. I'm
using pam_mount to mount a share on a WIndows 2008 server.

Thanks for your reply.

The fact that disconnecting the webcam solves the problem leads me to
the conclusion that you are experiencing the symptoms of bug #884210, so
I'm marking this report as a duplicate of that one.

Feel free to report any other bugs you may find. Thanks for making

I've tried to set the "always_use_location_entry" Nautilus preference to
"true" on a fresh Oneiric install (using gconftool-2) to provide the
GNOME developers a way to reproduce the problem, but with no success
(the breadcrumbs bar is always shown). I'll try to set all the
preferences Stefan mentioned in the next hours.

[Bug 856138] Re: window decoration fails to respond

2011-11-18 Thread Alex Stapleton
This bug also affects me. I am running 11.10 x86_64 with integrated
Intel Core i7 HD graphics. All windows decoration will more often than
not stop updating focus status and also in fact it's mouse over
highlight/animations for the window controls too.

Doing anything that results in the window getting resized results in the
focus state getting updated but alt-tab using Static Switcher doesn't
update the focus info.

[Bug 891959] [NEW] RuntimeWarning: PyOS_InputHook is not available for interactive use of PyGTK

2011-11-18 Thread dino99
Public bug reported:

This error is logged each time at boot time:
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:127: RuntimeWarning:
PyOS_InputHook is not available for interactive use of PyGTK

Similar bug #526676 have been reported. Tried to strace that issue, but:

oem@oem-desktop:~$ strace -o /tmp/python-gtk2.debug python-gtk2
strace: python-gtk2: command not found

So i'm joining: oem@oem-desktop:~$ strace -o /tmp/python.debug python

Er, sorry, that was the wrong changelog entry. What I meant to paste
was:

doc-base (0.10.3) unstable; urgency=low

  * debian/postinst: set PERL_DL_NONLAZY=1 not to fail when perl is being
upgraded (closes: #648937).
  * install-docs.in:

[Bug 891961] [NEW] After scanning a few pages , simplescan gets the colours wrong

2011-11-18 Thread Stefan
Public bug reported:

Simplescan is pretty cool. However, with my scanner, after scanning a
few pages, it starts adding a large grey block from the center of the
page to the right hand margin in additional scans. This is in text mode,
in photo-scanning mode, it does the same, but with a magenta like
colour. Restarting SimpleScan solves the issue, until the first page
that is thus corrupted occurs, after which it occurs on each subsequent
page. The scanner used here is an HP ScanJet 2200c over USB

It's been reported already; so, the best to do is give it attention at the

[Bug 871809] Re: MacBook: Backlight doesn't turn on at (or after) unlock screen

2011-11-18 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
** Description changed:

  MacBook early 2008 model, Intel® 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2
+ MacBook Pro 2011 model

- Problem occurs with: Ubuntu 11.10 beta
+ Problem occurs with: Ubuntu 11.10
Does not occur with: Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 10.04, etc

  1. Choose “Lock Screen”.
  2. Wait for the backlight to turn off.
  3. Press a key or touch a pointing device.
  4. Press one of the brightness keys on the keyboard.
  5. Enter your password at the unlock screen.
  6. Press one of the brightness keys on the keyboard.

  What happens:
  3. The unlock screen appears, but it is almost invisible, because the
backlight has not turned back on.
  4. The backlight still does not turn on.
  5. The backlight still does not turn on.
  6. When you choose to increase/decrease the brightness, the backlight finally
turns on.

  What should happen:
  3. The backlight turns on immediately.

This looks similar to bug 580225, except that that bug was occurring
with Ubuntu 10.04, whereas this bug was not.

[Bug 861268] Re: text corruption in terminals (xterm, urxvt) and emacs

2011-11-18 Thread James Hunt
Switching to "Unity 2D" (*) seems to solve the problem for me. Can
anyone else comment on their experiences?

(*) - To switch to Unity 2D, click the "gear" icon by your name on the
lightdm display manager and select "Unity 2D". If there is no entry for
"Unity 2D":

1) Login
2) Open a terminal
3) Type, "sudo apt-get install unity-2d"
4) Logout
