[Bug 855449] Re: Unable to boot normally, have to use acpi=off
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue. However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request. We have noted that there is a newer version of the development kernel than the one you last tested when this issue was found. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not. If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released. [Bug 883663] [NEW] Silly redesign of mount tmpfs over /run prevents machine from booting properly
Public bug reported: Hi, I just upgraded a machine (not the one I am writing this bug report on) to ubuntu oneiric. The machine simply can't configure its network interfaces anymore, since ifup from package ifupdown needs to put its state into /var/run/network/ifstate Unfortunately the directory /var/run/network does not exist at boot time because the oneiric initrd code mounts a fresh tmpfs over /run and links /var/run into this freshly created file system, thus causing the missing /var/run/network and so keeping ifup from work. As I saw there are plenty of reports for bugs caused by putting a tmpfs onto /run, which is, btw., a waste of RAM. How can someone replace /var/run with a tmpfs created freshly at boot time, thus deleting all directory structures under /var/run? This is broken by design (and obviously breaks so many functions). How can you do that? Who made this decision? [Bug 782860] Re: Pulseaudio consumes approx 1.5MBps of network when it sees an Airport Express
As I've suggested a gazillion times, the fact that the ROAP module is loaded when the package is installed is NOT what I intended as the upstream author and maintainer of this code. Please remove it, I'm sick an tired of supporting users coming to upstream channels because of downstream modifications. The ROAP module is not perfect code and it WILL prevent any Mac or Windows machines using the RAOP device when the module is loaded. It does not behave well and is not a good citizen. If you wish to make the module loaded by default then ensure you employ someone to work on the code to improve it before you do so. The module can and should be loaded via paprefs. This gives the user the choice. I believe you also need to update paprefs for the new PA 1.0 you shipped as I've heard user reports that it's currently broken. If you wish for the module to be turned on by default when the package is installed then change the gconf schema, do not hack the default.pa. [Bug 883673] [NEW] X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable
Public bug reported: Hi, after upgrading my system to oneiric, the X11 desktop is ugly and almost unusable, because the fonts and characters are stretched horizontally and blurred. [Bug 755791] Re: [RS690M] No 3d acceleration in Radeon X1200 with new Gallium r300 / 3d drivers in 11.04
There is a patch in freedesktop.org bug tracker, that seems to fix the problem. If someone wants to try it, it's there, but please be careful. ** Description changed: The bug is active also in Freedesktop.org : https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37679 + [edit] + The bug seems to be fixed with a patch provided by Freedesktop.org team. + [/edit] [edit] This bug is caused by interrupts. They're not working. The solution for this problem is: - To see if Ubuntu 10.04 (where all things worked well) used UMS instead of KMS. - If Lucid used KMS, to bisect the kernel to see what change caused the problem. [/edit] [edit] The bug description, updated: The symptoms: No 3d acceleration (glxgears shows a black window, Unity doesn't start), *but* no fallback into the software-rendering mode (glxinfo reports that the 3d acceleration is working) The hardware: ATI Radeon RS690M X1200 series The version of Ubuntu: Ubuntu 11.04 (final release) [and Maverick also]. The behavior was also observed in Debian and Fedora 15, as noted below (so it seems not to be Ubuntu-specific). The version of xserver-xorg-video-ati: 1:6.14.0-0ubuntu4 (default in Natty). Same problems with the xorg-edgers PPA in Natty Beta2. The software affected: Compiz (doesn't start because requires direct rendering); then, Unity (just the wallpaper or black screen and the mouse pointer). glxgears, Stellarium, Blender, Adobe Flash Player in fullscreen mode and Visual module of Python work if software rendering is forced (but of course they run very very slow). The history of the bug: all worked as expected (out of the box) in 10.04, but in 10.10 the problems started. The workaround was to disable KMS, but now, in Maverick, since the new Gallium driver doesn't have a non-KMS mode, that workaround is not available. This issue was reported when using 11.04 Beta 1 and Beta 2, then, in the descriptions below there are some strange things (xorg crash during startup, software rendering fallback), that don't occur any more. The issue is just the description given here. The exceptions: **sometimes** (??) the 3d acceleration does work as expected, but at the moment there is no way for us to know when it will work or not [help please!]. And, sometimes the 3d acceleration work but is so slow that it seems to be actually software rendering. The workarounds: `vblank_mode=0 glxgears` (or other program) gives correct 3d accelerated output. `export vblank_mode=0` also allows to start Compiz and 3d acceleration works after running that. That is just a workaround and the problem is not solved yet. [/edit] Binary package hint: xorg I installed Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1, and I'm not able to run Unity and Compiz, because I have no 3d acceleration. However, I was able to run Compiz once, the next time I booted, I don't know why, Compiz doesn't work. After several reboots, I see the following: 1. Sometimes (?), I have 3d acceleration via software rendering. When I run `glxinfo | grep render` I get: direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_fragment_program, And if I run `compiz --replace`, I get the following error: Backend : gconf Integration : true Profile : default Adding plugins Initializing core options...done Initializing bailer options...done Initializing detection options...done Initializing composite options...done Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: Software rendering detected Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session prueba@prueba:~$ Window manager warning: Locale not understood by C library, internationalization will not work (metacity:2357): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. [Bug 883673] Re: X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable
Interestingly, after rebooting twice (and starting xfce4 as a first desktop) X11 came up with a correct dpi value of 96x96, and everything looked well again. Since I was hunting another problem and sometimes booted both machines in the so called "recovery boot mode" without that initial splash screen, I guess that this might be the problem: If the splash screen hasn't been run at boot time, ubuntu/lightdm/X11 seem to have problems with finding good dpi values (or maybe strictly calculates them from the physical screen size reported from the display, thus getting these odd values). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883673 Title: X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/883673/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 883677] [NEW] Changing the default alert sound breaks desktop sound theme
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1) Open a terminal, dconf-editor, and the Sound Configuration window. 2) Navigate to org.gnome.desktop.sound in dconf-editor. The value for the key named "theme-name" should be "ubuntu" 3) In the terminal, run the command: /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question" You will hear the expected "drum beat" question sound. 4) Click on "Bark" in the Sound Configuration window to change the alert sound. a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to "_custom" 5) In the terminal, run this command again: /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question" You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or data not found" 6) Change the alert sound back to "Default" in the Sound Configuration window. a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to "freedesktop" 7) In the terminal, run this command again: /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question" You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or data not found" In order to get Ubuntu's sound theme back, you have to manually change the value of theme-name in dconf to "ubuntu". Expected behavior: 1) When changing alert sound back to "Default," the value of "theme-name" in dconf should revert to "ubuntu", not "freedesktop". 2) When choosing an alert sound other than "Default", users will not reasonably expect that many of their other system sounds will disappear. Only the alert sound itself should change. More ideally, the selection should be among entire sound *themes*, like the moblin theme which is available in the repos. ** Affects: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883677 Title: Changing the default alert sound breaks desktop sound theme To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/883677/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 868034] Re: Huawei E220 can't connect on Ubuntu 11.10
I am experiencing similar problems after upgrading my Acer Aspire One to 11.10 from 11.04. Once connected, my E220 will disconnect and reconnect quite reliably provided it continues to be powered on via its USB connection. Howver if I unplug it or depower it by swirching off, I cannot get it to reconnect on 11.10, and I have to go either to Natty or to Windows to get it to work again. From there, a direct restart to 11.10 will deliver it it back in a condition from which it will connect again. [Bug 883680] [NEW] Freezes (and Kernel panics) after Update to 11.10 probably caused by rt2800pci
Public bug reported: Since the update to 11.10 I experienced random freezes and kernel panics. At home this happened much less frequent than somewhere else. I started netconsole and after some time i now have experienced a freeze (blank screen, but no blinking Caps-Lock as it happens if the kernel panics). Well, the netconsole log was very big and repeated very often, so i just cut the last lines which hopefully will be sufficient. You can see it here: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/500219/ I did a quick search and found this post: http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-wireless/msg77438.html Which says that this could be related to the rt2800pci driver. I dont know how to turn off Powersaving of this driver, if you can tell me i could try if this is a workaround for me. If you need further assistance from me in locating the problem just tell me. According to the guidelines: 1) Ubuntu 11.10 2) Linux wind 3.0.0-13-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Mon Oct 17 20:18:09 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux 3) Obviously I would like to have a smoothly running OS. 4) Freezes and Kernel Panics happen. [Bug 883585] Re: Kubuntu 11.10 -- Printers found but cannot print
** Description changed: Description:Ubuntu 11.10 Release:11.10 This is a very serious bug most likely in cups itself. Any printer connected either over a network or directly onto the machine can be found, but will not print. The print job stays in the queue forever. There are many reports of this, but most people thing it's just their own printer. Below are posts I made to other sites on this issue. - I'm getting the same issues and it seems to be printer independent. My printer is an HP Stylus 415. It worked fine on Natty, but on 11.04 I can set it up on the network but nothing will print to it. This is in the cups log: /var/log/cups/error_log D [18/Oct/2011:22:59:28 -0400] [Job 30] Getting supported attributes... D [18/Oct/2011:22:59:28 -0400] [Job 30] Get-Printer-Attributes: server-error-internal-error (Unknown) D [18/Oct/2011:22:59:28 -0400] [Job 30] Get-Printer-Attributes returned server-error-internal-error. E [18/Oct/2011:22:59:28 -0400] [Job 30] Unable to get printer status. This is also in the system log: /var/log/syslog Oct 19 19:50:40 odyssey kernel: [38119.579286] type=1400 audit(1319068240.145:24): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" name="/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf" pid=4528 comm="apparmor_parser" Oct 19 19:50:40 odyssey kernel: [38119.580556] type=1400 audit(1319068240.149:25): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_replace" name="/usr/sbin/cupsd" pid=4528 comm="apparmor_parser" Oct 19 19:50:40 odyssey udev-configure-printer: add /module/lp Oct 19 19:50:40 odyssey udev-configure-printer: Failed to get parent - I have now tried an old HP DeskJet-880C directly to the USB port. I can configure it fine, but it won't print. This is the same results I get from my network printer an Epson NX415, as I mention above. So it seems not to be printer drivers or a connection issue. I'm betting there is a problem with the cups server itself. I compared the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf with the one on an older machine which has Kubuntu 10.04 on it and except for a few minor things they were exactly the same. I even swapped the old version to the new release with no changes. I burned 11.10 onto a thumb drive and booted it from my eeePC 900 and guess what? Yup, the printer doesn't work from there either. There is definitely something wrong with cups itself. - I am very surprised that this even made it out to a release of Kubuntu which is what I use. It may be happening to other variations of Ubuntu also, but this I have not tried. + + - + Edit: Below is what happens after I try to print. It keeps going periodically for some time after I have canceled the print job. + + $ sudo tcpdump -i eth0 -vvn tcp port 631 + [sudo] password for : + tcpdump: listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 65535 bytes + 18:55:05.723564 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 3643, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 60) + 192.168.1.105.41323 > 192.168.1.126.631: Flags [S], cksum 0x8466 (incorrect -> 0xbb90), seq 967441230, win 14600, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 14742901 ecr 0,nop,wscale 6], length 0 + 18:55:05.723960 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 60) + 192.168.1.126.631 > 192.168.1.105.41323: Flags [S.], cksum 0xfa1d (correct), seq 4196584152, ack 967441231, win 5792, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 407635588 ecr 14742901,nop,wscale 4], length 0 + 18:55:05.724002 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 3644, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 52) + 192.168.1.105.41323 > 192.168.1.126.631: Flags [.], cksum 0x845e (incorrect -> 0x3ea2), seq 1, ack 1, win 229, options [nop, nop,TS val 14742901 ecr 407635588], length 0 + 18:55:05.724303 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 3645, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 211) + 192.168.1.105.41323 > 192.168.1.126.631: Flags [P.], cksum 0x5733 (correct), seq 1:160, ack 1, win 229, options [nop, nop,TS val 14742901 ecr 407635588], length 159 + 18:55:05.724352 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 3646, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 648) + 192.168.1.105.41323 > 192.168.1.126.631: Flags [P.], cksum 0x6142 (correct), seq 160:756, ack 1, win 229, options [nop, nop,TS val 14742901 ecr 407635588], length 596 + 18:55:05.724708 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 52317, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 52) + 192.168.1.126.631 > 192.168.1.105.41323: Flags [.], cksum 0x3d3b (correct), seq 1, ack 160, win 429, options [nop, nop,TS val 407635588 ecr 14742901], length 0 + 18:55:05.724802 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 52318, offset 0, flags [DF], proto TCP (6), length 52) + 192.168.1.126.631 > 192.168.1.105.41323: Flags [.], cksum 0x3a9c (correct), seq 1, ack 756, win 504, options [nop, nop,TS val 407635588 ecr 14742901], length 0 + 18:55:05.736123 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 52319, offset
[Bug 826771] Re: indicator-appmenu leads to have a nautilus menubar displayed on top of the screen
I can confirm that in both Unity and in Gnome-Shell I still have this bug. I have had to turn off file manager handling the desktop, until this bug is fixed. The real issue is not the fact that "with transparent themes it is viewable underneath", as that only affects a small portion of the population. The real issue is that in both Unity and Gnome shell it pushes the background image downwards by around 20-25 pixels. This affects the smoothness of when you log in, and also in gnome shell any time you go into and out of the 'activities window' the background image jumps up and down. Another big problem is people with more than one monitor. In Unity it is fine because the unity bar is shared across both screens, but in Gnome- Shell the top bar is only on the main screen, leaving the ugly nautilus menu bar across the top of the screen of the other monitor. The only fix as of now to fix the bar being there and subsequently moving the placement of the background image is to turn of file manager handling the desktop in Gnome-tweakwhich works beautifully..but it is an unfortunate fix for those like me who enjoy having icons on their desktop The fix needs to be one where we can have the file manager handle the desktop WITHOUT the bar being across the top, because it is for all intensive purposes useless. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/826771 Title: indicator-appmenu leads to have a nautilus menubar displayed on top of the screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-foundations/+bug/826771/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
