[Bug 695919] [NEW] Sony F series "assist" and "vaio" buttons not recognized by sony-laptop

2010-12-31 Thread Alex M. Lowe
Public bug reported:

The "assist" and "vaio" buttons on Sony Vaio F series laptops are not
recognized (although ACPI events are still sent).

In checking dmesg, I receive the following errors:

For the assist button:
[84044.545156] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0xa6
[84044.946497] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0x26

For the Vaio button:
[84119.820688] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0xa5
[84119.940642] sony-laptop: Unknown event: 0x100 0x25

These are consistent with a keypress and a key release.

I have included a patch to sony-laptop.c (contained in
drivers/platform/x86 in the Linux source). This patch was written for
2.6.35, but works on 2.6.37 (downloaded tonight from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/linux-source-2.6.37).

[Bug 695925] [NEW] 1280x1024 resolution doesn't work if openGL is turned on

2010-12-31 Thread Nikola Pavlovic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glob2

If the resolution is set to 1280x1024 the screen goes black.
How to replicate the bug
1. go to settings and select 1280x1024 resolution

the screen will go black and you have to edit ~/.glob2/preferences to get the

[Bug 596139] Re: Copy and paste of data cells in calc alters formulas referring to those cells

2010-12-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Reuben Firmin thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better.
While this phenomenon is confirmed in Maverick, the reason for it is
most likely a developer decision (I actually prefer the way it is).
However, having the option of changing this association to what your
expecting would be great. If this optionality is not available the next
step is to link an upstream bug found performing a search via
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/query.cgi or if not found reported via

I am also able to reproduce it on a Natty i386 system (also with the
command "yelp ghelp:user-guide"). That system is a VMware Workstation
virtual machine with the 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo machine (running
Maverick amd64) as the host system. The Natty guest system runs yelp
2.30.2-0ubuntu1. The VMware Workstation version (in case it's relevant
for benchmarking or other purposes) is 7.1.3 build-324285.

I neglected to mention it before, but the Maverick amd64 system runs
yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 695929] [NEW] yelp takes a long time to load About This Document in the Desktop User Guide

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

On a Maverick amd64 system with yelp 2.30.1-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs
10.10.5, and gnome-user-guide 2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2, I ran "yelp
ghelp:user-guide". This system is affected by Bug 409706, but I waited
several seconds until the CPU spike was over. Then I clicked "About This
Document" on the right. (I have separately tried File > About This
Document, which behaves the same, except as detailed below.) I have done
this several times, and it almost always takes at least ten seconds to
load. While loading, the CPU spikes to near 100%. During this time (and
immediately before), my CPU is loaded to less than 10% by other non-
niced processes. This is a slight annoyance on my system, but I imagine
that this lag could cause serious problems on systems with slower CPU's.

Note that, unlike in Bug 409706, where the CPU spikes but the page is
loaded and usable during the spike, in this bug, the page is not loaded
until the spike is finished. (These bugs are also different in that one
occurs when yelp is first run, while the other occurs when yelp loads a
specific page. I am wondering if I should really be filing this bug
against gnome-user-guide...but it seems to me that the cause of the lag
is probably in yelp.)

I have also found that:

(1) After loading About This Document (by either means) and then
browsing elsewhere, clicking "About This Document" in the File menu
loads the About page immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage,
no matter what else has occurred in between.

(2) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking
another link in the bar on the right (for example, "Basic Skills") and
then clicking "About This Document" again loads the About page
immediately, without wait or excessive CPU usage.

(3) After loading About This Document (by either means), clicking the
back button (or clicking N links and then clicking the back button N+1
times) and then clicking "About This Document" in the bar on the right
(NOT from the File menu) produces the same wait time and CPU spike as
occurred when loading the About page the first time.

I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system (with the same
three package versons as on the amd64 system mentioned above), and also
on a Natty i386 system with yelp 2.30.2-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-docs 10.10.4,
and the same version of gnome-user-guide as on the Maverick systems
(2.30.0+git20100403ubuntu2).

[Bug 480096] Re: "start: Job failed to start" after upgrade to 1.9.3-0ubuntu4.1

2010-12-31 Thread jbatista
I'm not able to run apport either. When I manually run apport-bug (or
ubuntu-bug) from the console I get this message:
"Could not import module, is a package upgrade in progress? Error: No module
named restfulclient.errors"
Could this be a symptom?

[Bug 607487] Re: OOo writer spell checker marks email addresses as misspelled

2010-12-31 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Rory McCann thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better.
In Maverick, if one opens a new OOo Writer file, typed b...@launchpad.net
then hit enter on the keyboard, the e-mail address becomes a hyperlink
and is ignored by the spell checker. However, having the option for the
spell checker to ignore non-hyperlinked e-mail addresses is a good one.
The next step is to link an upstream bug to this one found searching

[Bug 257827] Re: brightness changes twice when using hotkeys

2010-12-31 Thread Brian Rogers
I have put Pavol's patch in a PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~brian-
rogers/+archive/power

Just run
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:brian-rogers/power

And then update your system to try it out. It also contains a patch to
provide battery life estimates on laptops that don't normally get them.

[Bug 695320] Re: HD Access Light Constantly Lit

2010-12-31 Thread Jon Pennington
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Using the -22 or -24 kernel package on an amd64 machine, with or without
all Ubuntu updates, the hd access light rarely (if ever) turns off. This
happens with either the stock 250GB 5400 RPM SATA drive or my new 64GB
Sandforce 1222 SSD. With the stock drive installed, the hd access light
doesn't seem to correlate with the sound of the disk actually doing
anything; the light is on even when the disk isn't making any noise at
  all.

jbatista, that means that the python-lazr.restfulclient package isn't
installed properly for some reason. Try

  sudo apt-get install --reinstall python-lazr.restfulclient

? If that fails, copy&paste the entire output.

[Bug 681837] Re: Yelp can't open link in a new window

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I am able to reproduce this bug on a Maverick i386 system with yelp
2.30.1-0ubuntu1. It seems that xref: links cannot be opened in new
windows, though other links can. An xref: link is a link to part of the
current document. The bug is probably due to yelp trying to open the
xref: link with respect to the non-document of the new window, rather
than the document into which it refers (the document in the original
window).

I am also able to reproduce in on a Maverick amd64 system (same package
version). However, it does NOT occur in a Natty i386 system (yelp
2.30.2-0ubuntu1). Perhaps the fix just needs to be backported to
Maverick (and other supported Ubuntu versions).

** Summary changed:

- Yelp can't open link in a new window
+ Yelp can't open xref: links in a new window

** Tags added: amd64 maverick

[Bug 53132] Re: [time-admin] We need a GUI to enable/disable utc

2010-12-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Users will surely know what UTC is, but they'll have to be pretty smart
to guess without further information all the implications using UTC on
the hardware clock has. As I said, the installer should just disable UTC
in hardware clock if Windows is already installed. If we provide an
option for every special case, our installer will soon become unusable.

[Bug 439448] Re: Visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-12-31 Thread dino99
my 2 cents about that issue:

there are two cases on my end:
- a laptop dual booting windows+maverick (only): never met that issue

- a desktop with multi boot: windows+lucid+maverick+natty (all i386) and
sharing a single /home.
With this config i continuously get issues like related with this report. Its
clear to me that's happening because of all these ubuntu distros are sharing a
single /home. As there are only common settings and configs, they are
conflicting each others: example: as my latest settings are related to natty
(and work properly), when i run maverick again then the panel is broken (icons
desappeared). Readding the missing icons in maverick, then reopen natty, and
the icons are duplicated now on natty

so my conclusion is:
as the settings related to a specific ubuntu distro are not signed and not
affected exclusively to this distro, there are races/conflicts with other linux
sharing the same /home and most of its hidden folders (.gconf, ...)

Should like to know if other users with this config (single /home shared
by multi linux distro) & devs are agreeing too. In my point of view the
latest distro settings override the previous settings (even they are
related to a different distro/release), thats really a bed design.

2010-12-31 Thread Eliah Kagan
I have just found that, in addition to the above, I experience this bug
when trying to open info pages with yelp. On my system, the following
succeeds:

yelp ghelp:user-guide
yelp man:gcc

But the following fails, producing this crash:

yelp
yelp info:gcc

(This is with gcc-doc installed...though when I installed it via apt-
get, it did say "The package gcc-doc should be rebuilt with new
debhelper to get trigger support". I'm not saying that's relevant. I'm
just not sure.)

[Bug 571638] Re: Keyboard does not work when touchpad disable button pressed

2010-12-31 Thread Christian Göbel
I finally got my hands on a computer that could boot with Ubuntu 9.04 (the last
version of Ubuntu where this problem did not appear).
In Ubuntu 9.04 (gnome 2.26.1) the following entry does NOT exist in gnome
settings:
/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/keybindings/touchpad

Since setting this entry to empty solves the problems the issue seems to be
related to the introduction of the key in recent versions of Ubuntu.
The following comment on a related bug provides a possible explanation:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/549727/comments/103

In short, the author suspects that gnome_settings_deamon and the
synaptics driver both try to activate and deactivate the touchpad and
one of them fails, which is suffienct to lead to the reported issue.

If you delete the corresponding key in gnome settings then everything
works fine again, since the synaptics driver takes care of this (as has
been the case prior to Ubuntu 9.10).

Now, is this a gnome_settings bug?
Who should take care of switching touchpad on/off? Gnome? The synaptics driver?

I am willing to open a bug upstream if a knowledgeable developer could
provide some indication who should fix the bug.

[Bug 684613] Re: emacs crashes with "Arithmetic error"

2010-12-31 Thread Haruka YAGNI
I have the same problem in Ubuntu 10.10.
The cause was upgrading emacs23 (and related packages) from 23.1-4ubuntu7 to
23.1-4ubuntu7.1+maverick1.

By downgrading, I solved this problem. However, I am sure that something is
wrong with the new package.
I would like developers to fix it.
