[Bug 672911] [NEW] Installing Netbook Edition alongside Desktop Edition corrupts Gnome settings (incl. Gtk theme)

2010-11-09 Thread Henri Sivonen
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my system from Lucid to Maverick (originally installed as
Karmic and upgraded to Lucid). The Gnome theming worked and my anti-
aliasing settings were remembered.

Then I followed the advice given in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity in
order to test Unity. That is, I ran sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook
and logged out, at which point my computer froze and I had to reboot it
using the power button. I then logged into the Netbook Edition side.

The window decorations looked right, but the theming within any app
window was ugly. I tried switching themes in the Appearance control
panel. The theme preview in that window worked right. However, after
selecting a theme, only the window decorations were affected and
anything drawn by the Gtk theme engine still looked like the mid 1990s-
style Gtk built-in default theme.

I logged out of Netbook Edition and into Desktop Edition. The problem
persisted. I also noticed that other Gnome settings, such as the anti-
aliasing setting had reverted to default.

I removed the Netbook Edition and Unity and then ran Computer Janitor to
get rid of the deps they had brought in. This didn't fix the problem.

Restoring .gconf, .gconfd, .gnome2 and .gnome2_private from a backup
fixed the problem.

I could not reproduce the bug after a few reboots.
So I am also not sure what exactly caused it. Could be a one-off problem.
You can probably close this as solved. Sorry.

[Bug 672917] [NEW] [MathView] configuration file explicitly specified but not found

2010-11-09 Thread gpk

Binary package hint: abiword

When starting Abiword, I see this:

[MathView] *** Warning[1:1]: configuration file

That sounds like someone compiled Abiword with a specified configuration
file, then forgot to include it.

Then there are some warnings that sound more like configuration choices

I took a look at alsamixer, and it would seem that Alsa thinks that my
left speaker is actually my front speaker, and the right is another
surround speaker. This is probably why audio is so quiet and distorted.

[Bug 502143] Re: CD is partially detected [CD-RW_CRX140E], likely due to hardware missing GET CONFIGURATION support

2010-11-09 Thread David Henningsson
Ok, sorry for the delay, I'm processing my backlog since UDS and
Plumber's. Anyway, I updated my Lucid installation, enabled proposed,
and booted the 2.6.32-26 kernel. I was met by the following error:

udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured.
Gave up waiting for root device.
/.. etc ../
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/0927db9a-0528-49c5-bdc5-ff3d5a9eb9c5 does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!

Whether this is a result of a proposed grub, kernel, or udev is beyond
my knowledge.

Ok, with the 2.6.32-25 kernel it seems to be working correctly - when I
insert an audio CD, it is detected and I'm asked whether to open
rhythmbox or do something else. With 2.6.32-26 kernel, boot fails with
the error above. I could use some advice on whether to mark this one as
verification-failed, or verification-done + open a new bug for the non-
booting 2.6.32-26 kernel.

[Bug 569354] Re: Mouse and keyboard become unresponsive on Asus Eee PC 1005HA

2010-11-09 Thread Davide Cavestro
I am experiencing the same behavior on my ASUS eeepc 904HA.
If I don't use the touchpad everything works fine (I use an external USB mouse)
If I use the touchpad the cursor starts to skip out of control, showing
contextual menus, creating folders on the desktop and so on... sometimes a
single keyboard key pressure produces many characters, like this (I'm
not sure the two thinngs can be related, since the touchpad issue is nearly
systematically reproducible, while the keyboard not)

after that, the external usb mouse still continues to move properly, BUT for
instance the cursor remains similar to a pipe (like when it's over a text
field) even when I try to click on the window titlle bar, and you can't use the
mouse anymore to change focus between windows...
My machine is still in this state while I'm typing here (now I'm using the
keyboard to switch between windows)

cat /etc/issue

[Bug 373367] Re: Pointer goes offscreen on non-rectangular dual-head

2010-11-09 Thread Alexey A. Kiritchun
@Jeffery To:

I don't know enough about X programming to fix the menu issue (and my
limited knowledge suggests that it's not possible for an application
like XCreateMouseVoid - it really does not receive events when other
window does "active mouse grab"; one would have to use XTest, I imagine
(and I remember seeing an app doing exactly this to "fix" the same issue
that's being discussed here (but it was KDE-dependent, so I was too lazy
to try it))).

As for the 'mouse stuck at the edge' problem: try creating a largish
void with the top-left corner far away in the negative coordinates; for
best results - with the _center_ in the negative coordinates; i.e. if
your invisible zone is from 0,0 to 1024,400 - do smth like

XCreateMouseVoid -1100 -500 2124 900

That should make it impossible for the mouse to enter the zone where
it's being "pushed away" from the screen (usuccessfully); just '-1 -1'
isn't enough as the first event seen by XCreateMouseVoid may be well
inside the window due to "mouse acceleration" and/or system load.

[Bug 672936] [NEW] Regression SC "is slower" than Gdebi for plain .deb installing

2010-11-09 Thread Paul Sladen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Filing on the basis of:

  http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/12068_3911906_1
/Linux-Does-Being-Competitive-with-Windows-Matter.htm

"Take installing a Debian software package, for example. In older
releases of Ubuntu, one would end up installing a software package
downloaded onto their desktop via Gdebi. Today, Ubuntu defaults to its
software center instead, which is much slower to load than Gdebi and
results in a much slower user experience."

I'm not sure of the degree to which this is true, but there is at least
a perception in this case that it the use-case in question is slower.

I just tried this in Lucid with all the updates and it doesn't work. I
have selected "adding eurosign to certain keys" with the number 5
selected as the key. I also have the compose key set to right win. I
have tried in gedit after making the change "right alt + 5", "left alt
5", "ctl 5" , "right win 5", etc. Nothing works. The keyboard layaout
I am using is USA. Keyboard model is "Generic 105-key Intl PC". I have
also tried "enabling extra typographic characters" option, but that
doesn't work for me either.

Is it necessary to reboot to get these to work? I haven't done that and
don't want to as this computer is busy working on things.

OK, the "enable extra typographic characters" workaround works, but only
if you choose a "3rd level chooser" key. The "add euro" option doesn't
seem to do anything even if a chooser key and a composer key are

[Bug 672938] [NEW] Touchpad detected as generic mouse on Fujitsu P8110

2010-11-09 Thread Ketil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I have a Fujitsu Lifebook P-series, which comes with a touchpad. I have
installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 (using wubi), and it only appears to detect a
generic PS2 mouse. In System -> Preferences -> Mouse, I don't have the
"Touchpad" tab. I have tried following various instructions online, but
none of them have helped.

The thing that drives me nuts is the tap-to-click functionality on this
laptop, which is hypersensitive, and I can't disable it. I keep editing
my own text, writing in wrong places, selecting stuff I don't want,
click while I type, etc etc etc. I even tried disabling it in Windows,
but that didn't change anything in Linux.

Including files requested in the relevant section of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection ("In case Touchpad
features like scrolling, tapping, etc do not work at all.")

Windows' Device Manager shows the mouse to be an ALPS device.

See the -mfpu=neon there.

[Bug 581395] Re: Rhythmbox: Error while saving song information. Internal data stream error.

2010-11-09 Thread Akaname
It seems like rhythmbox damages the files while causing "error while
saving song information". After a fresh install of Ubuntu Maverick with
Rhythmbox 0.13.1 on a new multicore laptop I experienced the same bug
again on a freshly oggenc-encoded .oga file.

After that I checked the file playback. It played in rhythmbox, but it
failed in totem.

So I checked the freshly encoded file with ogginfo:

ogginfo /home/suu/srv/music/repositories/1/items/1021/13.oga
Processing file "/home/suu/srv/music/repositories/1/items/1021/13.oga"...

All other freshly encoded files were ok. After checking my complete collection
of 2+ .oga songs with ogginfo i found 5 old defect files. They all were
playable in rhythmbox, failed to play in totem and showed the same errors in
ogginfo.

[Bug 671332] Re: changing pwd strength criteria in /etc/pam.d/common.password takes no effect at all

2010-11-09 Thread firebird
Dear Steve!

Ok, first of all thanks alot for your thoroughness, I really appreciate
that!

I am well aware of that but man pam_unix for example does explain the min=
switch but max= or maxlen= switches are not even being mentioned in there...
I would therefore be very grateful if you could point me the way to a complete
documentation...?

Further if this is a "lapse of the pen" so to speak, how in the world do I
really turn off the complexity chek?
That after all was my initial issue?

Thanks and your's, firebug

[Bug 655528] Re: Attempt to record video as MKV file causes guvcview crash

2010-11-09 Thread Paulo Assis
Mike could you change your input format from MJPG to YUYV.
MJPG uses continuous fps, this is not very well supported in guvcview (in fact
I think it's the first time I've seen it on a commercial webcam).
YUYV uses discrete fps values and these have much better support.

Also it seems there is no audio input (0 frames) this can have a big
impact on performance, you may need to set a different audio source or
just as test try disabling audio completely.

Thank you,
Paulo

without any good result.

Do you know other more specific fingers recognition bugs open?

This is unrelated to the cdrom_id changes. Of course it could be the
result of a misbuild of udev, or a change in the underlying kernel
headers.

You already confirmed that new udev and older kernel work. Do you have
a chance to check whether the previous (151-12.1) udev works with
the newer (-26) kernel?

Thanks,

[Bug 672945] [NEW] Unlisted dependency (patch) in bcmwl-kernel-source

2010-11-09 Thread xuanji
Public bug reported:

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10, dual-booting with Windows 7, on my
Acer Aspire 5820TG through a liveUSB installer. However the drivers for
my wireless card (a Broadcom BCM43225) was not installed. I followed the
instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#STA%20-%20No%20Internet%20access
after manually downloading the files bcmwl-kernel-source_5.60.48.36
+bdcom-0ubuntu5_amd64.deb and dkms_2.1.1.2-3ubuntu1_all.deb from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/ using Windows 7 and copying the files from
the hard drive. dkms was listed as a dependency for bcmwl-kernel-source.
I could install dkms but not bcmwl. After running sudo dpkg -i bcmwl-
kernel-source_5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5_amd64.deb from the command line
the error message said "patch: command not found". After installing
patch_2.6-2ubuntu1_amd64 manually, bcmwl-kernel-sources installed
correctly.

patch isn't listed as a dependency for bcmwl-kernel-source, although it
is invoked in the installation process for bcmwl-kernel-source.

[Bug 672948] [NEW] Inconsistent XML config checks

2010-11-09 Thread wodny
Public bug reported:

1) http://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#elementsMetadata states:
"This name should consist only of alpha-numeric characters".

2) /usr/share/libvirt/schemas/domain.rng:

  [A-Za-z0-9_\.\+\-&:/]+

3) Virsh accepts with spaces, but then during a vm start some
misguiding output is generated. It says aa_change_profile() fails. Virsh
doesn't check the config with the schema as well.

[Bug 672091] Re: gnome-system-monitor crashed with SIGSEGV in g_source_get_current_time()

2010-11-09 Thread hinkie
Great to hear from you Pedro, and so quickly, thank you.

This is the first time I've had bug 672091 so I cannot suggest how to
reproduce otherwise. As I recall it happened following doing the last
updates, following the re-boot, so maybe that helps? It was the first
successful crash data upload.

672110 also came from the same machine, also a one off.

672861 that I've since reported is reproducible and happens
spontaneously every week or so. There are 3 HDD in the system, one for
the OS, and 2 x 2TB drives. One of the 2TB drives is totally full (i.e.
0 bytes left) and I am wondering if this has something to do with the
problem.

The 672861 bug is the one that triggered my install of apport, and it
took many crashes and updates before I got the data successfully
uploaded. If I can help further?

[Bug 672951] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.04: EHCI: AMD periodic frame list table quirk

2010-11-09 Thread Shane Huang
Public bug reported:

On AMD SB700/SB800/Hudson-2/3 platforms, USB EHCI controller may read/write
to memory space not allocated to USB controller if there is longer than
normal latency on DMA read encountered. In this condition the exposure will
be encountered only if the driver has following format of Periodic Frame
List link pointer structure:

For any idle periodic schedule, the Frame List link pointers that have the
T-bit set to 1 intending to terminate the use of frame list link pointer
as a physical memory pointer.

Idle periodic schedule Frame List Link pointer shoule be in the following
format to avoid the issue:

Frame list link pointer should be always contains a valid pointer to a
inactive QHead with T-bit set to 0.

Steps to Reproduce:
It is SW workaround of HW issue, it is difficult to reproduce from driver
point.

Patch has been accepted by EHCI maintainer:
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg38405.html
http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg38414.html

We will provide the git link here once it is available,
suppose the patch will appear from kernel 2.6.37 if everything is ok.

We hope the issue will be fixed by Ubuntu 11.04 if its kernel is not up
to date enough.

How are you compiling the Ubuntu kernel source?

You will need to use dpkg as there will be a lot of debian/ubuntu patches to

This will quite often leave you with errors like you got above.

[Bug 672952] [NEW] no sound and can not shut down (intermittently after startup)

2010-11-09 Thread David Robinson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04. About 1 in 10 times when booting machine, there is no
sound and the machine cannot be rebooted or shut down, except by a
forced power off (hold down power switch). These 2 faults always occur
together.

The sound problem is caused by Ubuntu not finding the sound hardware.

If I try to restart or shut down the machine, I am taken to the login
screen. Attempting to restart/shut down from here doesn't work.

These problems have been introduced by a recent update, and did not
occur when I first used 10.04.

2010-11-09 Thread Gursimran singh Mohar
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed with some of the updates. If you could test the
current Ubuntu stable release(maverick ubuntu 10.10), this would help us
a lot.

However John, as I interpreted from the bug's description, I thing it
isn't a bug. When you disable the touchpad from System>Prefrences>Mouse.
This will disable touchpad features like scrolling and tapping however
the cursor will continue to work as a simple mouse and cursor will
continue to move.

[Bug 211026] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freeze when downloading from bittorent

2010-11-09 Thread One Heart Music Services
I am unsure if this is still an open bug as the last post was a year
ago, but I have recently moved from being a lifelong Windows user to
Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. Using Utorrent with both Windows XP for years and
more recently Windows 7 always occurred without incident.

Following a severe number of full-blown laptop freezes (the same laptop
as before mind) using Transmission 2.04 caused Google to lead me here.

Is there been a fix found for this torrent freezing issue or is it
something I am going to have to move back to Windows when I want to use?

Thanks

[Bug 571822] Re: Empathy allign RTL text as LTR text on messenger

2010-11-09 Thread Shlomil

Well, Going by the GNOME logic (which I dislike .. sigh (
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167354 ))
.. the auto-detection should be just fine (option C).

The grandmothers using Gnome should be smart enough to insert the Invisible
Unicode LRM/RLM characters when auto-detection goes wrong (which happens very
rarely I must admit ).

I'm afraid the problem get even more complex since last time I checked,
MSN didn't support RLM/LRM so well (this might have been changed by now)
and in this case butterfly should remove the RLM/LRM marks and set MSN's
RL flag accordingly.

IMO, Support for Rich text solves the problem since you may specify both
alignment and direction (note these are actually two different
properties) for different parts of the text and let the protocol plugin
do what it can to send it correctly.

Maybe Behdad Esfahbod should be asked for his opinion on this.
