Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.04. About 1 in 10 times when booting machine, there is no
sound and the machine cannot be rebooted or shut down, except by a
forced power off (hold down power switch). These 2 faults always occur
together.

The sound problem is caused by Ubuntu not finding the sound hardware.

If I try to restart or shut down the machine, I am taken to the login
screen. Attempting to restart/shut down from here doesn't work.

These problems have been introduced by a recent update, and did not
occur when I first used 10.04.
