(2.6.32-22 and ever before) I checked the root filesystem with fsck, found&fixed some minor problems (but HEY! Public bug reported: 10.10 Maverick Beta [25th September 2010] Booting from either Desktop or Alternative fails unless ACPI=off is specified. As per workaround at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/612341, enabling ACPI=copy_dsdt allows the Ethernet card to work as well. I assume some sort of blacklist is in place to determine which hardware should boot with ACPI=off or other options. I can confirm this bug on Macbook 2,1 - I tried to boot latest Maverick daily live CD (64-bit amd64 iso) and it failed - rEFIt recognised it as 3 entries (Linux, Legacy OS, and some EFI64 entry). The first 2 result in a black screen with: -- 1. 2. Select CD-ROM Boot Type : --- The keyboard becomes unresponsive here and I can't go any further. The third option says that it can't find a proper EFI image and offers to go back to rEFIt. I've been suffering this problem on my new iMac 21.5 (11,2 i3, Radeon 4670). All linux live CDs would give black screen even though I could hear the disc loading up. I've got round the problem for my system by doing two things: 1 connecting an external monitor through the Mini Display port. 2 Using F6 on the grub boot menu to add options - radeon.modeset=0 nomodeset I don't know if the radeon modesetting works on the external monitor (LG1710, has worked OK on a Mac Mini but will test it on iMac) but it certainly doesn't work on the main monitor. I'm using ubuntu and I got this error message since about two years with every linux-kernel. The problem appears with 32bit and with 64bit. I have an Asus M2N-L mainboard which has two Marvell 88E8056 chips onboard. The machine is used as router. eth0 is my internal interface and eth1 is the external interface used by ppp0 to connect to the DSL-modem. I get this error message only for eth1 ! Also I get a lot of dropped and frame errors for this interface: eth1... Although the install worked and the vncserver started, the first problem was that attempting to type in the terminal window made it disappear! I started an emacs on that screen, and the same thing happened. Looking at the processes, I noticed x-window-manager was running, so I kill it, installed open-motif-clients and started mwm instead. All the windows came back (now decorated Motif-style), so they were still there. I remember using that emacs for a little while without any problems. Later I started up another emacs, and it dumped core, saying Gdk-ERROR **: Failed to get keymap When I tried to report that as a bug using the bug-reporter, the firefox that came up on that screen had strange colors which made the page unreadable, i.e. the background was a deep bloodred. Unicode characters which have glyphs wider than the spacing overprint each other, making an unreadable display. Since a square box with a hex point number inside it is the representation for any character which is not defined in the font, and the box is itself a double-width glyph, you cannot read the contents of the box to see what you did wrong. VTE should detect this condition and automatically treat such characters as double-width, similar to the way wide oriental characters are displayed. [Bug 647381] [NEW] requirement for up-to-date packages in livecd makes reporting bugs in livecd nearly impossible
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport More than 90% of the time when I encounter a beta Meerkat bug, I'm told I don't have up-to-date packages and therefore cannot report the bug. The dialog lists the packages, but I haven't found a way to copy and paste the list elsewhere to be able to upgrade the packages except tediously by hand. Generally it takes more than one try. Apport also apparently decides to ignore crashes of applications after the first two, so that causing the crash again after a few tries at getting updated packages no longer automatically generates the popup crash notification. Finally, sometimes it is just not feasible (due to memory constraints) to update all the packages if I'm running from a livecd. My machines have systems installed on them which need to work, so I do all of my newer-release testing via livecd. This makes reporting bugs MUCH more frustrating and time-consuming.
