[Bug 519066] Re: Microphone doesn't work on Dell Precision M6500

2010-09-02 Thread David Henningsson
Upstream (Takashi Iwai) now has committed a solution he likes better,
and so it will be used in Natty and forward. He asks for testing of the
patch, which you can do by uninstalling any dkms packages, then install
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules and
reboot. Can you do that and report back? Thanks!

[Bug 628654] [NEW] Battery Information Shows Up Twice

2010-09-02 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Using Ubuntu Maverick installed from a daily image after alpha 3. Gnome
power manager is 2.31.90-0ubuntu5.

Pulling up the menu that shows power information should show my AC and
Battery. Instead I get the same information listed twice about the same
interfaces. I only have one battery.

Screenshot included.

[Bug 460669] Re: kio_kamera segfault

2010-09-02 Thread barna
Hi,
On my new laptop there is a card reader, so I never used PTP from dolphin. I
did a few trials now.

- connected the camera, opened camera://, navigated down to the
pictures, and tried to copy 13 files, for the first 2 files I got the
error message 'Could not lock device', but this time I did not find
kio_kamera entries in dmesg. The other 11 files were copied
successfully.

- switched off/on the camera, quit dolhpin, restart dolphin, try to
access camera://, message: Unknown error code 150, Bad parameters,
please send a full bug report at http://bugs.kde.org

- 3rd trial: successfully naviage down to the pictures, try to copy 13
files, Could not lock the device error again for the first 2 files, the
other were copied successfully. A second attempt to copy the first 2
files succeeded

Theoretically the autoregistration system checks (using euca_conf

[Bug 626089] Re: Pulseaudio is not running when logging in as root

2010-09-02 Thread David Henningsson
I don't think Ubuntu supports or will support logging in and playing
audio through PA as root, therefore I'm setting it as "Won't fix". We
generally try to lock down the root account as much we can for maximal
security. In addition, you've found a workaround.

> In the log I see dozens of invalid arguments. Should I be concerned
that perhaps invalid parameters are being used?

No, it's PA's way of probing what the hardware can do and what it can't
do.

(this bug) have to do with each other. Not talking about the fact that
#597233 was fixed in 0.6.2-1ubuntu1, while this appears to be in
0.6.2-1ubuntu1.

If you tell me where to look for more information to analyze the problem
(besides the attached logs), I can do that, no problem, I'm very
interested in solving this issue.

[Bug 628657] [NEW] goes wild when selecting latest proposed oo packages

2010-09-02 Thread Tormod Volden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

There are a bunch of openoffice packages in proposed right now. When
selecting on of these in update-manager (does not matter if I have
"Description of update" open or not) the GUI freezes and the CPU goes
high for 10 seconds while "Downloading list of changes" is displayed. If
I click a non-oo package the response is immediate. Selecting the same
oo package again causes the same freeze/CPU churn.

I do not know how to trace a pile of python, but find enclosed a ltrace
in case it can cast some light over it.

When I ran ltrace -c on it, the one click caused 6 minutes of waiting yielding
these results:
% time seconds usecs/call calls function
-- --- --- -
 15.23 85.527228 186459799 free
 15.13 84.985249 161525668 memcpy
 12.31 69.140534 142485820 memset
 10.55 59.279684 141419911 malloc
  8.67 48.723256 211230058 strchr

plz rewrite update-manager in c thx bye :-P

[Bug 628418] Re: default timeout is too low, impossible to escape in a VM

2010-09-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
Right, it's set the way it is to avoid losing one precious second in the
desktop boot. I'm all for changing it for "servers".

However, as evidenced by a heated discussion at UDS-M, there is no clear
definition of a "server" that would magically allow us to switch between
the two settings. Did you have anything in mind, Colin ?

[Bug 616023] Re: nVidia card : X won't start since 1.9 update, no screens found

2010-09-02 Thread Harry
Hi Randall,

You are correct about the new issue of 2D and 3D acceleration sluggishness.
The 2D sluggishness in scrolling for instance can clearly be seen like this:
open synaptic and try to scroll the package list with mouse.

However, this may not be a driver issue after all.
At least NVidias Aaron Plattner claims it is merely a regression in xserver 1.9.

Anyway, threre was no scrolling sluggishness issues in xserver 1.9 with the
NVidia drivers 256.44.
It worked very fluently.

[Bug 627291] Re: liblogthread-dev is missing pkg-config file

2010-09-02 Thread Florian Haas
Andres, I'm not aware of any package that uses this at this point, but
the missing pkg-config file is keeping me from building clusternet on
ubuntu.

Try this:
git clone git://github.com/fabbione/clusternet.git
cd clusternet
./autogen.sh
./configure

and then you get:

checking for logt... configure: error: Package requirements (liblogthread) were
not met:
No package 'liblogthread' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables logt_CFLAGS
and logt_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

liblogthread-dev is of course installed, it's just missing the
appropriate .pc file.

Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2010-09-02 Thread Martin Wildam
After all the critics on Ubuntu or it's community - I want to clearly
state, that

1. I appreciate the community A LOT! It gives me a good feeling of not
being left alone with the computer problems. And I know what I am
talking about because I experienced also the prior-internet times
where I was pretty alone with all problems coming up - I had a few
fellows in school I could talk about but that was it.

2. Although there are a few things that are very annoying, the overall
experience with the computer for me got much more positive since my
move to Linux and even more when switching from Fedora to Ubuntu.

3. Looking at the relations - e.g Red Hat having about 3200, Novell
about 3600, IBM more than 30(!) and Canonical having just about
350 employees - Canonical should not be criticized too much for not
contributing enough to Linux as a whole (which I read several times
during the last months).

4. Of course I appreciate the work of ALL companies and people
contributing to the Linux kernel, Gnome and all the other software
pieces that are part of the whole Linux repositories. Without those
the naked OS would be nothing worth looking at.

5. If I would put all the time I invested into Linux with testing and
bug reporting or simply documenting stuff (even if mostly only in
forums and on my blog so far although it is my plan to do more
contributions on the Wiki) into money numbers, I could have bought a
Windows license + a bulk of commercial software - but: I and everybody
else participating is MAKING THIS BETTER! - This is the big
difference. With the investment you help to make it better. This is
very different from investing into license fees where you don't know
what will be done with the money. You help to make it better for
everyone else and others are helping you out either with their
contributions. This is true cooperation - win-win-situations. So
everyone contributing - be proud and receive my thanks.

[Bug 628664] [NEW] fix shutdown and remove logout from live "try USR without installing"

2010-09-02 Thread Thomas C Gilliard
Public bug reported:

USR-i386-20100830.iso

fix broken shutdown selection on f3 XO avitar drop-down menu from live "try USR
without installing"
remove logout on drop-down from live - "try USR without installing"
This bug addresses 2 different conditions:

1-) On a live "try USR without installing" live CD logging out traps
user with no way to log in.

2-) On an installed system, fixing shutdown,( unless multiple users
exist, or other desktops, like gnome, are present), will simplify usage.

** Affects: sugar-0.88 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 628418] Re: default timeout is too low, impossible to escape in a VM

I think for the boot loader, this is pretty simple as it's almost
invariably installed by the installer, so we can act differently
depending on the install media.

[Bug 613214] Re: Blank DVD does not get detected / cannot burn

That's interesting.

Does it display the same behaviour with other CD/DVDs?

I notice that your drive doesn't have DVD+R write capabilities.

I'm wondering if it would have any reason to detect blank DVD+Rs.

[Bug 419787] Re: Treat Categories on the homepage as buttons

2010-09-02 Thread Vish
Now the highlight has gone again.. :(

The text+icon get highlighted only when pressed and not on hover.
We can do a similar highlight when hovered.

Note that in Nautilus browser view and in unity too, the objects highlight when
we hover over it.
SC is the one which behaves odd here.

Re-opening bug since this dint get fixed in any release.

[Bug 628666] [NEW] Wrong encoding of foldernames in the sidebar

2010-09-02 Thread Mattias Eriksson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-mapi

>From one computer I add a folder called "Räksmörgås" using IMAP. Then I open
evolution showing the same account using MAPI. In the mapi version it is shown
as "Rksmrgs", all non 7bit ascii chars are not shown.

Evolution 2.30.1.2
Evolution mapi 0.30.1
Evolution mapi and evolution is from this ppa :
https://launchpad.net/~jacob/+archive/evo230

I tested this with Lucid and libmapi0 1:0.8.2+svn1524-1
I reported it upstream as https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=620811
This should be fixed in new openchange, and looking in the svn log, there are
lots of UTF8/Unicode related fixes.
Maverick still uses the same version of openchange, so the problems probably
still exists there. Openchange really should be updated to a newer version to
improve the unicode situation. Since maverick uses evolution-mapi 0.28 I guess
the larger utf8 problems are still present, making mapi unusable for all
non-7bit ascii users. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=569321

[Bug 627495] Re: kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.35/drivers/md/dm.c:2190!

2010-09-02 Thread nullack
Having a bit more time to go through these logs, I see two problems:

1. The Intel ICH10 southbridge chipset raid. This is the most user
visible problem where EXT4 filesystem problems are reported on each boot
and will most often result in no boot taking place.

2. The Creative XFi Titanium sound card coupled to my tri sli NVIDIA
GTX480s is having problems. Each of my three GTX 480s has an nvidia
audio driver component to it and I dont think the supplied nvidia
graphics driver actually contains the sound drivers to run these
features in them. I have manually installed the properitary NVIDIA
drivers. Result is kernel panics about sound problems.

[Bug 358654] Re: udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured

2010-09-02 Thread bandini
System broken after update !
sudo update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.32-24-generic restored a working boot.

Why don't you save the previous kernel + initramfs when updating image ?
I am glad I had another working kernel + initramfs.

How are you supposed to even find this page if you are not an
experienced user ? A broken system after an update is a very bad bug
IMO. Please find attached the dpkg.log file.

[Bug 625239] Re: Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode

2010-09-02 Thread Bilal Akhtar
I got the reason why this is happening. When X starts up, it sends a
deactivate request to plymouth and not a quit request. So, plymouth
keeps running, and it interprets the keypresses of enter and 2 to be of
a quit request.

[Bug 625239] Re: Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode

2010-09-02 Thread Bilal Akhtar
Hence, I have made a patch on my sys (testing right now) which is more
of a 'hack' rather than a fix, since it instructs plymouth to quit on
deactivate requests as well. Should work well, since during the boot
phase, its the only time it gets a deactivate request.

[Bug 627287] Re: Rewrites /etc/cups/printers.conf every night

2010-09-02 Thread era
Here is the requested information.

Notice that printers.conf changed (again?) between the fgrep and the
diff -- the time stamp in the diff has also been updated just after
(10:20 vs 10:58).

(Some time passed between these commands; certainly I left the
terminal for longer than 300 seconds where I ran sleep 300, because I
was working on other things in the meantime. But the real beef seems
to be the time between the first fgrep and the diff. This was no more
than a few minutes, and possibly only seconds.)

[Bug 566812] Re: USB Modem wont connect after modem hangup

2010-09-02 Thread Rocklobster
Sorry, I should clarify the problem above. I can connect to my 3G ISP
using the E1762 modem but after a disconnect from the provider an
attempt at connecting again fails. Either power cycling the modem by
unplugging it or restarting modem-manager then allows network manager to
once again establish a connection.

[Bug 628670] [NEW] usb-creator-kde gives error "installation failed" when reading an image from NFS

2010-09-02 Thread Alvin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

Steps to reproduce:
- Mount an NFS drive (use mount or specify in /etc/fstab. NFS kioslave is
currently broken)
- Select an .iso file on that NFS share
- Click 'make startup disk'
- The error message 'installation failed' will show up.

This message is not clear about the reason of the failure.

Possible solutions:
- Find out why images can not reside on a mounted drive
- If there are technical reasons for not allowing reading from NFS, adapt the
error message to say so.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: usb-creator-kde 0.2.22.1

[Bug 627287] Re: Rewrites /etc/cups/printers.conf every night

2010-09-02 Thread era
For what it's worth, the fact that it now removed the AuthInfoRequired
line (which I merely commented out when editing the file with nano)
finally resulted in the desired configuration. The fact that the file
gets overwritten and changes are lost is still a problem, though.

Previously -- led by the DO NOT EDIT comment at the top -- I would do
/etc/init.d/cups stop; nano /etc/cups/printers.conf;
/etc/init.d/cups/start; maybe these commands are incorrect (i.e. maybe I
should use invoke-rc.d instead)?

[Bug 628672] [NEW] Crash of ubiquity under unity

2010-09-02 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

On Ubuntu Netbook Edition (20100902):
Using ubiquity under the live session to install, after the partition method
(whatever option is used: manual partitioning, side by side or use full disk),
ubiquity is crashing when clicking "next".

The network being connected or not has no influence.

Note that the error isn't reproducible in installer mode (no live
session running) and not in the desktop edition in that hw (Dell mini
10, HD disk).

Here is /var/log/syslog when choosing manual partitioning.
/var/log/installer/debug doesn't provide useful information there.

[Bug 520712] Re: mplayer crashes with illegal instruction on a non-altivec enabled processor

2010-09-02 Thread Rogério Theodoro de Brito
Hi, Reinhard.

I don't have my G3 working right now (I hope to have it fixed very
soon), but, if I recall correctly, the MPEG2 video part of
ffmpeg/mplayer had some handwritten altivec stuff.

As soon as I get that machine to work again, I will work on this, if you
don't beat me to it.

Regards.

[Bug 292585] Re: Evolution Mail Notification has no sound

2010-09-02 Thread Sazhen86
I also had this problem, so I decided to use a script to play a wav file
using aplay. During my testing I found that aplay wouldn't play some of
my wav files with the following error:

aplay: test_wavefile:807: can't play WAVE-file format 0x0055 which is
not PCM or FLOAT encoded

Once I found one that aplay liked, I tried it in evolution and it worked
there too. I'm using evolution 2.28.3 on Ubuntu 10.04. Hope this helps
someone.

[Bug 628418] Re: default timeout is too low, impossible to escape in a VM

2010-09-02 Thread Soren Hansen
I have a couple of patches (for debian-cd and grub-installer) that
should get this done. The grub-installer one lets us set the delay, the
debian-cd one does it by default for installs done from the server CD.
They're completely untested (I've never worked out how to quickly and
easily test anything that involves the installer, and I can't devote
much time to this), but I hope they can at least serve as a starting
point.

I'll push them both in a minute.

[Bug 616023] Re: nVidia card : X won't start since 1.9 update, no screens found

2010-09-02 Thread Aaron Plattner
"At least NVidias Aaron Plattner claims it is merely a regression in
xserver 1.9."

I didn't say that. All I said was that if an experiment shows that
using the same driver, xserver 1.8 is fast and xserver 1.9 is slow, that
it's not reasonable to immediately assume that the problem is in the
driver. It's still possible for the problem to be in the driver, but we
now have one point of circumstantial evidence that it's not (except that
you just contradicted your earlier posts by saying that 256.44 is *not*
slow with xserver 1.9). Somebody needs to do some more investigation to
say for sure one way or the other. I don't have time to look at it
right now, I'm afraid.

Re: [Bug 573786] Re: 10.04 Synaptics touchpad horizontal scroll doesnt work (10.04)

2010-09-02 Thread Stoo
Dear Ahmed,

Thank you for your email but some of what you ask is beyond my
understanding. Nevertheless, here goes (with transcript/output and
comments where I get stuck! if you can give better directions here I can
re do):

[1.Enter the following command in a terminal/console: ]

/* below is a direct screen dump as nothing seemed to output from the
commands */

r...@stuart-laptop:/home/stuart# xmodmap -pp >~/xmodmap
r...@stuart-laptop:/home/stuart# xinput --list-props  "SynPS/2 Synaptics
TouchPad" >~/xinput
r...@stuart-laptop:/home/stuart#

[2. Switch to a VT using Crtl+Alt+F2 and enter following in your
terminal ]

/*I don't what a VT looks like/understand -never used one and pressing
Crtl+Alt+F2 does nothing! -so staying in the same terminal window */

r...@stuart-laptop:/home/stuart# sudo evtest /dev/input/eventX > ~/evtest
sudo: evtest: command not found
r...@stuart-laptop:/home/stuart#

[3. Scroll, tap, drag, press buttons and create various other possible events
on the touchpad and then press CTRL+C to exit.
4. Press Crtl+Alt+F7 to switch back to X. ]

// these are not possible as step 2 failed

[5. Attach ~/xmodmap, ~/xinput and your ~/evtest to the bug report in
separate attachments. ]

// I don't understand this so would need assistance - here are a couple
of listings which may or may not help gleaned from the forums etc:
