[Bug 519066] Re: Microphone doesn't work on Dell Precision M6500
Upstream (Takashi Iwai) now has committed a solution he likes better, and so it will be used in Natty and forward. He asks for testing of the patch, which you can do by uninstalling any dkms packages, then install https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules and reboot. Can you do that and report back? Hi Randall, You are correct about the new issue of 2D and 3D acceleration sluggishness. Re: [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
After all the critics on Ubuntu or it's community - I want to clearly state, that 1. I appreciate the community A LOT! It gives me a good feeling of not being left alone with the computer problems. And I know what I am talking about because I experienced also the prior-internet times where I was pretty alone with all problems coming up - I had a few fellows in school I could talk about but that was it. 2. Although there are a few things that are very annoying, the overall experience with the computer for me got much more positive since my move to Linux and even more when switching from Fedora to Ubuntu. 3. Looking at the relations - e.g Red Hat having about 3200, Novell about 3600, IBM more than 30(!) and Canonical having just about 350 employees - Canonical should not be criticized too much for not contributing enough to Linux as a whole (which I read several times during the last months). 4. Of course I appreciate the work of ALL companies and people contributing to the Linux kernel, Gnome and all the other software pieces that are part of the whole Linux repositories. Without those the naked OS would be nothing worth looking at. 5. If I would put all the time I invested into Linux with testing and bug reporting or simply documenting stuff (even if mostly only in forums and on my blog so far although it is my plan to do more contributions on the Wiki) into money numbers, I could have bought a Windows license + a bulk of commercial software - but: I and everybody else participating is MAKING THIS BETTER! - This is the big difference. With the investment you help to make it better. This is very different from investing into license fees where you don't know what will be done with the money. You help to make it better for everyone else and others are helping you out either with their contributions. This is true cooperation - win-win-situations. So everyone contributing - be proud and receive my thanks. -- Martin Wildam http://www.google.com/profiles/mwildam -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 625239] Re: Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode
I got the reason why this is happening. When X starts up, it sends a deactivate request to plymouth and not a quit request. So, plymouth keeps running, and it interprets the keypresses of enter and 2 to be of a quit request. -- Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625239 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625239] Re: Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode
Hence, I have made a patch on my sys (testing right now) which is more of a 'hack' rather than a fix, since it instructs plymouth to quit on deactivate requests as well. Should work well, since during the boot phase, its the only time it gets a deactivate request. -- Pressing Enter crashes both X and plymouth in graphical mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625239 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 627287] Re: Rewrites /etc/cups/printers.conf every night
Here is the requested information. Notice that printers.conf changed (again?) between the fgrep and the diff -- the time stamp in the diff has also been updated just after (10:20 vs 10:58). (Some time passed between these commands; certainly I left the terminal for longer than 300 seconds where I ran sleep 300, because I was working on other things in the meantime. But the real beef seems to be the time between the first fgrep and the diff. This was no more than a few minutes, and possibly only seconds.) e...@fsopti607:~$ ls -l /etc/cups/printers.conf -rw--- 1 root lp 646 2010-09-02 07:50 /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo mv /etc/cups/printers.conf /etc/cups/printers.conf.20100902 [sudo] password for era: e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo cp /etc/cups/printers.conf.20100902 /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ ls -l /etc/cups/printers.conf -rw--- 1 root root 646 2010-09-02 10:20 /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo nano /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ sleep 300 y...@fsopti607:~$ sudo invoke-rc.d --quiet cups force-reload [sudo] password for era: * Reloading Common Unix Printing System: cupsd [ OK ] e...@fsopti607:~$ ls -l /etc/cups/printers.conf -rw--- 1 root lp 647 2010-09-02 10:20 /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo fgrep Auth /etc/cups/printers.conf #AuthInfoRequired username, password e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo diff -u /etc/cups/printers.conf.20100902 /etc/cps/printers.conf --- /etc/cups/printers.conf.201009022010-09-02 07:50:34.094388684 +0300 +++ /etc/cups/printers.conf 2010-09-02 10:58:30.013145384 +0300 @@ -2,7 +2,6 @@ # Written by cupsd # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE WHEN CUPSD IS RUNNING -AuthInfoRequired username, password Info HP LaserJet m3035 MFP / hpjis Location 2nd floor South Park MakeModel HP LaserJet m3035 MFP hpijs pcl3, 3.10.2 e...@fsopti607:~$ sudo fgrep Auth /etc/cups/printers.conf e...@fsopti607:~$ ls -l /etc/cups/printers.conf -rw--- 1 root lp 611 2010-09-02 10:58 /etc/cups/printers.conf ** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- Rewrites /etc/cups/printers.conf every night https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/627287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For what it's worth, the fact that it now removed the AuthInfoRequired line (which I merely commented out when editing the file with nano) finally resulted in the desired configuration. The fact that the file gets overwritten and changes are lost is still a problem, though. [Bug 628672] [NEW] Crash of ubiquity under unity
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity On Ubuntu Netbook Edition (20100902): Using ubiquity under the live session to install, after the partition method (whatever option is used: manual partitioning, side by side or use full disk), ubiquity is crashing when clicking "next". Note that the error isn't reproducible in installer mode (no live session running) and not in the desktop edition in that hw (Dell mini 10, HD disk). [Bug 628418] Re: default timeout is too low, impossible to escape in a VM
I have a couple of patches (for debian-cd and grub-installer) that should get this done. The grub-installer one lets us set the delay, the debian-cd one does it by default for installs done from the server CD. They're completely untested (I've never worked out how to quickly and easily test anything that involves the installer, and I can't devote much time to this), but I hope they can at least serve as a starting point. "At least NVidias Aaron Plattner claims it is merely a regression in xserver 1.9." I didn't say that. All I said was that if an experiment shows that using the same driver, xserver 1.8 is fast and xserver 1.9 is slow, that it's not reasonable to immediately assume that the problem is in the driver. It's still possible for the problem to be in the driver, but we now have one point of circumstantial evidence that it's not (except that you just contradicted your earlier posts by saying that 256.44 is *not* slow with xserver 1.9). Somebody needs to do some more investigation to say for sure one way or the other.
