[Bug 576259] Re: gnome-session often doesn't start properly in 10.04

2010-07-23 Thread Corsaire
I still have the problem nowadays, so no update that have been released
since did provide a fix.

I have observed a few things though, it seems the the problem is not
gnome-panel itself but the clock-applet.
Sometimes the gnome-panel starts but I have a white rectangle at the place the
clock-applet should be.
When this happens, when I quit and login again into Xorg, I have the behavior
described in this bug report which is no gnome-panel at all, like it is stalled
by something. This something would be the clock-applet of course.

When I look in the process tree with pstree I can see TWO clock-applet
processes.

My guess is the following :

The clock-applet sometimes doesn't start correctly, crashes, and stalls
the gnome-panel. If you try to restart your Xorg it makes things even
worse making another clock-applet process.

Re: [Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-23 Thread Mark Shuttleworth

How many people would set that? Each option doubles the number of code
paths that need testing if we want to put out a quality result. If only
1% of people would set that option (and gconf options are used much less
often than that) it's not worth it unless you are a maintainer of the
code yourself and it matters to you.

[Bug 608686] Re: Caps Lock key is doing opposites

2010-07-23 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in xorg-server.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Please run the following command (without the quotes) from a terminal window to
upload necessary debugging logs:
"apport-collect 608686"

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 587387] Re: Weather Report applet no longer retreives forecast at my location (Melbourne, Australia)

2010-07-23 Thread David Clayton
Ok, here is the reply from the BOM (the maintainers for this applet may want to
consider using the FTP site instead of the HTML page as it looks like the
others will be broken soon):
--
Hi David

Thank you for your request regarding the accessing forecasts through the
Bureau's web services. We are continually making changes to improve the
site as a result of public feedback and we expect to introduce html
formats across the site for all states. As far as access to our products
for use in automated systems, you should consider using our ftp site as
the preferred method. For forecasts go to the following URL:
ftp://ftp2.bom.gov.au/anon/gen/fwo , and look for IDV10450.

I trust this will satisfy your request.

[Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-23 Thread inane
Well I'm willing to bet that there were more people that thought this a
feature than a bug but no polls were taken on it. I certainly don't see
where the bug is here or even how this bug should have ever been taken
seriously. Amazing. Where is the bug? I just deeply don't understand
that, but I looked past it and asked for an option and was told it
wasn't feasible.

In this case, the argument for the option taking more extra work than
necessary is a fallacy since the feature already existed without any
issues. The additional work occurred when the feature I relied upon was
deemed a bug.

[Bug 609044] [NEW] conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA

2010-07-23 Thread shane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The following error occurs early in the boot process and seems to be
responsible for stopping plymouth splash displaying:

conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic driver

Adding FRAMEBUFFER=y in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash appears to
workaround the problem but due to other (likely unrelated) boot warning
messages, plymouth is interrupted anyway so unsure whether or not it is
a proper workaround.

[Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-23 Thread inane
There are at least as many people that think this fix is a bug itself:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/light-themes/+bug/564749

Let me express my logic here:

1. Button is too easy to hit.

Ok, why is this a bug? The only possible reason I could think of is
that it's too easy to hit and lose your data.

So the question should be, why is it so easy to lose your data when you
close an application?

So the real but here should look like this:

1. Too easy to lose data when closing application.

The solution for this is to make it so that applications PROTECT THE
DATA BETTER.

I can confirm this bug. I created a file with pinning settings in
/etc/apt/preferences.d, but aptitude or the Gnome tools used by Ubuntu
ignored it (apt-get worked fine). I moved the contents of the file to
/etc/apt/preferences (file) and everything was OK.

[Bug 609051] [NEW] Wireless Network is Disabled When Laptop is Restarted After Installing Ubuntu File Sharing Services and on another Desktop PC Shared folders are No More Shared after each Restart.

2010-07-23 Thread Salik Mahmud
Public bug reported:

Hi! I am Using Dell Inspiron 1564 Laptop Intel i3 CPU and with Broadcom
413 Series Wireless Network Card and 4GB DDR RAM. Ubuntu 10.04 amd64
installed via wubi inside windows7.

After Enabling File Sharing Services on Ubuntu 10.04 My Wireless Network
is Disabled and Does Not get back by any means although the driver
remains active. Even I tried editing the Wifi Config File manually
setting Wireless Network Present= False to the True Condition means
Wireless Network Present = True still It didn't help. I used the manual
editing of config file under instructions from another query at Ubuntu
forums. (I am still a learner of Linux myself)

1-When I first faced this issue I was not sure why did it happen so I
simply formatted and reinstalled the Ubuntu and error went off. My
wireless network was now working fine till this afternoon. I did have a
doubt on Samba services last time so This time I installed the file
sharing services and even transferred a folder from my desktop with same
OS to my laptop but then I restarted The laptop the Wireless Network Got
Disabled and Could Not be Enabled by any Means Until I Removed all
SAMBA Services / Packages from Ubuntu Software Center and restarted the
Laptop. Now again Wireless network is enabled automatically and working.

2- Secondly In My Desktop When I share a folder from my desktop computer
It works fine but after the restart the Shared folders are no more
shared and I have to Share each folder again after every restart. The
Desktop is An AMD Athlon X2 (64Bit) Dual core 2.1Ghz with Asus
Motherboard of NV Series and Has 3GB DDR III RAM running in dual boot
with windows XP SP3 but windows XP is on Separate Physical Hard Drive
and I use F8 on Boot to Select which HDD to boot from. Wifi working
through ASUS USB, EZ Series Wifi Card connected to USB on My Desktop.

Somebody Please Help.

Regards
Salik Mahmud

[Bug 560653] Re: Elgato eyetv diversity DVB-T tuner (new edition) not recognized

Ok, I guess this is too hard task for the kernel team. I'll boot another
OS to use the tuner. This is just an example about how hard it is to buy
hardware to Ubuntu box (or to any other Linux box). I had tested a tuner
that had exactly same marketing name, and it works flawlessly in Ubuntu,
but this newer tuner of mine has different hardware inside anyway.

Re: [Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-23 Thread The Fiddler
Personally speaking, I cannot think of any application that will destroy
data if you accidentally hit the close button. They will either prompt you
whether you wish to save first (OpenOffice, Gimp, Gedit, Evolution, the scan
app, ...) or they will be able to resume from where you left (Firefox,
Chromium, ...)

The "too easy to lose data" argument is a strawman at best.

[Bug 609055] [NEW] problems with using parallel port

2010-07-23 Thread Wolfgang Lubowski
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virt-manager

1)
Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Release:10.04

2)
  Installiert: 0.8.2-2ubuntu8
  Kandidat: 0.8.2-2ubuntu8
  Versions-Tabelle:
 *** 0.8.2-2ubuntu8 0
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) I expected to can use a old parallel dongle (on parallel port) in my
guest system (Win XP)

4) When I add my parallel port (I'm not sure if it is /dev/lp0 or
/dev/parport0) I can't boot the guest system and get the following output:
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/engine.py", line 588, in run_domain
vm.startup()
File "/usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/domain.py", line 150, in startup
self._backend.create()
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 300, in create
if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainCreate() failed', dom=self)
libvirtError: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused

The dongle is connected to the parallel port and libvirt-qemu has the
permission to use this port. I've looked this issue up in google for
hours, but didn't find much.

I'm not sure if this is a real bug, but to my mind it's at least a
"strange behavior" of virt mangater/qemu/kvm.

  * Cherry pick from trunk:
- For FISH scripts, just execute them rather than special casing python and

- When calling scripts in non-negotiable, don't use exec. (LP: #602414)

[Bug 605013] Re: [MIR] cloud-init (grub-legacy-ec2)

2010-07-23 Thread Scott Moser
cloud-init the binary package is already in main. The "complicated" bit of
this source package is in the binary cloud-init package.
This main inclusion request is for "grub-legacy-ec2", which is a binary package
put here for lack of any better place to put it.

The code in grub-legacy-ec2 is copied from the grub source package. I chose to
copy the existing "update-grub" grub rather than write new code to do something
that was already being done elsewhere. The copy was needed (rather than just
installation of 'grub') because:
a.) i needed some ec2 specific changes
b.) 'grub' conflicts with grub-pc (grub 2) which is needed in the uec images
for other reasons.

as far as modifying the strings "grub" to "grub-legacy-ec2", I just left
that as it was in most places figuring it there was no benefit to
changing it and would simply be changes I'd have to re-apply if I wanted
to re-sync with the code from grub that was copied.

[Bug 608423] Re: post-start script broken

2010-07-23 Thread hyper_ch
Well, since yesterday mysql won't be properly started anymore at boot-
up. Grepping the syslog only returns this:

Jul 23 10:27:28 kubi kernel: [ 105.206415] type=1505 audit(1279873648.967:10):
 operation="profile_load" pid=914 name="/usr/sbin/mysqld"
Jul 23 10:27:29 kubi kernel: [ 105.281964] type=1505 audit(1279873649.044:11):
 operation="profile_load" pid=979 name="/usr/sbin/mysqld-akonadi"

I don't get the error that the thread opener gets but in effect, mysql is not
being started at boot up.

[Bug 574773] Re: Cannot make directory '/var/run/screen': Permission denied (convert init to upstart)

2010-07-23 Thread Dustin Kirkland
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: screen

On a freshly booted server install:

  $ screen -ls
Cannot make directory '/var/run/screen': Permission denied

  This can be fixed with:
  $ sudo /etc/init.d/screen-cleanup start

- I believe this is because
+ I believe this is because
/etc/rcS.d/S70screen-cleanup is running via upstart much earlier than it
expects to have run, and is failing to correctly clean up that directory.

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
  Package: screen 4.0.3-14ubuntu1
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-server 2.6.32.11+drm33.2
  Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-server x86_64
  Architecture: amd64
  Date: Mon May 3 16:45:10 2010
  ProcEnviron:
- LANG=en_US.UTF-8
- SHELL=/bin/bash
+  LANG=en_US.UTF-8
+  SHELL=/bin/bash
  SourcePackage: screen
+
+
+ IMPACT: Sometimes 'screen' is not able to start after a reboot due to a race
condition between the mounted-varrun upstart job and the screen init script.
+ HOW ADDRESSED: This bug is addressed by porting the simple
/etc/init.d/screen init script to an upstart job that depends on the
mounted-varrun job having run.
+ HOW TO REPRODUCE: This bug is a race condition, and is difficult to
reproduce. I hit it most often on a really fast system -- ie, it's hard for me
to reproduce the issue in a virtual machine. To reproduce, reboot until you
try to run 'screen' just after boot, and you get the error saying:
+ Cannot make directory '/var/run/screen': Permission denied
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL: Relatively low, if a veteran upstart job reviewer
(hrrrm, Scott/Steve) reviews the proposed upstart job against the original init
script and confirms it's identical functionality.

[Bug 558327] Re: Window close button is clickable anywhere in the corner

2010-07-23 Thread inane
I, as well as you, know that. . . so my question to the original
submitter would be, what is the problem with easy to close? Another
issue is, if not for close, what are the left most and top most sides
and the corner for? Resizing? Well, that wouldn't b useful if the
window is maximized, and even if it weren't, there are three other
corners to grab.

The new behavior makes it so, the corner where the close is, is an extra
resizer. . . Why not just add another possible element to "close"
"maximize" and "minimize" called "spacer". If somebody has such a big
issue with accidentally closing their windows all the time, they can put
a spacer in the corner instead of the "close". This is honestly
ridiculous and regressive, when was it ever policy in an operating
system to PURPOSELY make something harder to do?

Re: [Bug 592787] Re: Add some sort of hint that the Ubuntu circle is click-able

2010-07-23 Thread Mark Shuttleworth

For 10.10, it *is* essential that the individual launchers can get a
blue triangle when a window is calling for attention. It would be nice
if the Ubuntu icon glow went blue as well whenever any of the launchers
have the blue state, but it's not essential.
