2010-05-18 Thread Willem Hobers
Hello Philippe,

I did as you asked. It seems to have resulted in a new kernel being
installed and running:

uname in Console:

wil...@pc10-135:~$ uname -r
2.6.34-999-generic

The laptop will now only work in safe mode.

The trick with pressing shift did not result in me seeing any grub-menu, so
I was not given the possibility to chose the newly installed kernel. Still
it seems that I am running it nonetheless.

The kernel log still shows the messages though they are not as numerous as
before:

May 18 08:53:49 PC10-135 kernel: [ 798.431245] CIFS VFS: ignoring corrupt
resume name
May 18 08:53:53 PC10-135 kernel: [ 801.744130] CIFS VFS: ignoring corrupt
resume name
May 18 08:55:24 PC10-135 kernel: [ 892.502408] CIFS VFS: ignoring corrupt
resume name

Does this help at all?

Willem

Ps. I will now deinstall the 2.6.34-999-kernel.

[Bug 580807] Re: Acer 1314LC doesn't boot using kernel 2.6.32 and acpi=force option

2010-05-18 Thread piviul
I've just installed linux-image-2.6.33-02063304-generic_2.6.33-02 and now the
pc hang on boot writing:
ACPI: BIOS age (320) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is required to enable ACPI

If I remove acpi=force from the kernel options the system boot.

So the problem persists even in the latest upstream kernel :((

Have a great day

[Bug 557297] Re: does not auto connect on startup after reboot

2010-05-18 Thread SabreWolfy
Worked in Karmic so confirmed as a regression in Lucid. Desktop machine
occasionally restarts after power-failure and does not automatically
connect to Auto Eth0 (the only network available). After logging in an
selecting the network from NM, it connects fine. /etc/network/interfaces
includes "auto eth0" entry. Very irritating, as I often need to connect
to the machine from off-site locations. Was not an issue in Karmic.

PS: The Auto Eth0 entry in NM always shows "Last used" as "Never", even

Yes, I installed Xubuntu 10.04. and can now just tell other people with
similar pc's/notebooks (Compaq Armada Pentium III 750 Mhz, 256 MB
RAM)...just don't try! With XP the laptop boots in approx. 5 minutes
(incl. antivirus). Wih Xubuntu 10.04. it became a nightmareit took
more than 10 minutes to boot. After booting the memory usage was at
85%-90% and every click takes minutes to be "executed". I think the only
solution might now be optinng for puppy linux.

After installed the driver from nvidia website it worked, but then I installed

I think now I can upgrade the kernel flawlessly.

sometimes, it may affect. If you face any such problem, then try

[Bug 357346] Re: xfce4-session fails to spawn gnome-keyring-daemon

2010-05-18 Thread Forest
I believe this bug was closed prematurely. It is important to realize
the unusual details of gnome-keyring-daemon, the services it provides,
and its two-stage startup. Take a look at the documentation:

http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/RunningDaemon

If you still think it should not be run twice, go back and read the
documentation again.

Contrary to comment #2, it is spawned by PAM only when the user logs in
by typing in a password. When GDM is configured for automatic or timed
login, gnome-keyring-daemon does not get spawned. That means auto-login
users will be left with no keyring service unless it gets started
elsewhere.

When gnome-keyring-daemon is spawned by PAM, it is strictly to capture
the user's password for automatic unlocking of the login keyring. From
the docs: "When run with the --login option, gnome-keyring-daemon does
not fully initialize. It expects to be initialized later by calling
another gnome-keyring-daemon with the --start option." Yes, it does
need to be run a second time, partly to finish initializing, and partly
so it can print the environment variables that some programs use to find
it.

Keep in mind that gnome-keyring-daemon acts not only as a place to store
secrets, but also as an SSH agent. Many people prefer it because it
provides better keyring integration and better UI than the classic ssh-
agent program. In order for ssh and other programs to use it, the X
session startup procedure must capture and export the environment
variables it prints.

For example, running gnome-keyring-daemon --start will finish
initializing and print something like this:

  GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL=/tmp/keyring-0vbOKZ
  GNOME_KEYRING_PID=1234
  SH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/keyring-0vbOKZ/ssh

In order to get full functionality, one of the X session startup scripts
should therefore do something like this: export `gnome-keyring-daemon
--start`

Quoting from the documentation again:
"""
gnome-keyring-daemon has certain environment variables that must be set in the
user's session:
* Each of the above ways of starting gnome-keyring prints out appropriate
environment variables to stdout.
* In the case of --login only a few environment variables will be printed.
A later call to --start will print the remaining environment variables.
* When used with a modern DBus capable session manager (like gnome-session
2.24.x and later) gnome-keyring-daemon will register environment variables
directly with the session manager.
"""

Under GNOME, I believe gnome-keyring-daemon gets its second run via the
*.desktop scripts in /etc/xdg/autostart. This completes initialization
without capturing the printed environment variables, but since GNOME's
session manager allows those environment variables to be set via D-Bus,
they get exported anyway. Under Xfce, the session manager lacks the
D-Bus environment variable feature, so running gnome-keyring-daemon a
second time via .desktop files fails to export the environment
variables. For now, on Xubuntu, it looks like it really does have to be
done in one of the session startup scripts.

When I was using Xubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), I worked around the problem by
putting this in a ~/.xprofile file:

  export `gnome-keyring-daemon --start`

That wasn't a good solution for most end users, but since I'm vaguely
familiar with X startup details, I was able to figure it out. However,
it broke in Lucid. It seems the developers recently changed libgnome-
keyring to rely exclusively on D-Bus for communication with the daemon,
ignoring environment variables like GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL. Since
~/.xprofile gets run before D-Bus is started, my workaround left me with
a daemon that worked fine for older programs (like ssh), but could not
announce itself on D-Bus and therefore could not be found by newer
programs (like seahorse and nm-applet).

On Xubuntu Lucid, there are only three places I can see where starting
gnome-keyring-daemon could fully initialize it, announce itself on
D-Bus, and capture/export the printed environment variables for use in
the X session. Those are:

  /usr/share/xubuntu/session.sh
  /usr/bin/startxfce4
  /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc

All of the above scripts are executed in an xubuntu session when
launched by GDM, *after* dbus has started.

In summary, gnome-keyring-daemon could be really useful to Xubuntu
users, but it won't be fully functional until the session startup runs
it in such a way that it can both announce itself on D-Bus and export
all its variables into the session environment. I hope this can be done
by default soon. Until then, most users will miss out.

[Bug 578822] Re: [regression-release] Misleading options when handling pendrives + cannot umount anymore.

2010-05-18 Thread Martin Pitt
Eject/Safe Removal have been there before, those are not a "regression".
See bug 453072 for why we removed "Unmount".

Eject -> Remove the medium in a drive (CD-ROM, SD-Card)
Safe Removal -> Remove the entire drive

Unfortunately most USB sticks out there lie and pretend they would have
removable media, thus "Eject" is shown for them.

[Bug 578701] Re: gnome-panel/clock-applet doesn't upgrade clock time

2010-05-18 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Incredible to say... after 6 days the bug vanished today. This morning I boot

During the last 6 days I never tried to change it or modify anything. So
it seems that it repaired by itself.

I can't imagine what happened. Any hint?

however no such limit exists on the SSH passwords.

[Bug 357346] Re: xfce4-session fails to spawn gnome-keyring-daemon

2010-05-18 Thread Forest
P.S. Of course, /usr/bin/xfce4-session could also do the necessary work
(as an alternative to doing it in the scripts I suggested). And, now
that I look at the source code, I see that the upstream xfce4-session
does exactly that. Sigh... it looks like this patch removed the call to
gnome_keyring_daemon_startup(), effectively disabling the correct
behavior:

xubuntu_gnome-keyring-daemon-compat.patch

That patch ought to be reverted. Instead of fixing the original
problem, it lobotomized xfce4-session.

[Bug 580221] Re: mc directory sizes not reliable

2010-05-18 Thread Yury V. Zaytsev
How do you know that what du reports to you is always OK??? You didn't
seem to have performed any independent validation for this. As I
mentioned above du on a cifs-mounted filesystem is clearly bullshitting
me, showing that a 9 mb directory takes 231 mb. mc's output, however, is
consistent with the true directory size which I obtained by counting the
files manually and the one shown by Nautilus.

In what concerns your other points, you obviously do not understand the
way ls and directory size count features work.

1) Unless mc is explicitly asked to count the size of the directory it
defaults to the output of ls, which is to report the amount of blocks
currently used for the directory entry. That's why in most of the cases
it shows 4096 for you, as your file system uses 4K blocks.

2) Count directory sizes is a CPU and time intensive operation and is
never performed unless you ask mc to do this explicitly.

3) When you exit the directory, the results of the counting operation
are not cached, so when you re-enter it again you have to recount the
whole thing again.

I don't see any bug here.

[Bug 497845] Re: OOCalc export to PDF creates PDF with image not being printed out

2010-05-18 Thread Lex Ross
Chris, Till:

Thank you so much for taking this issue seriously and for your precious
time spent on investigation. I performed a fresh Lucid install, and can
now confirm that the ODS spreadsheet prints out correcly as before. The
only thing is the warning that the are transparent objects in the
document, to which I respond with the request to print those out as
well. I print to A4 format paper.

Now with the fresh install I do not have PDF pseudo printer installed in
CUPS by default, so I tried PDF export from OOCalc. I can admire all
images on the screen in the resulting PDF file with Evince but when I
print it out to my Xerox Phaser 6100 network printer the job remains in
the queue forever. The printer has no indication of the job being
received and processed with "Ready..." indication on its LCD panel, no
lights blinking etc. and finally the printer goes into power save mode.

And I had no problem printing from Evince with other documents so far. I
will be submitting the similar PDF to my bank in about one month, so
we'll see what the bank has to say. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you once again for your time and co-operation.

I just posted more info about this very problem in bug 357346. It looks
like upstream xfce4-session did run gnome-keyring-daemon --start and
capture/export the environment variables, but an ubuntu-specific patch
disabled that behavior in a misguided attempt to fix another problem.

where else would I have to put the the module, so that it is removed

[Bug 514714] Re: Ubuntu One Web app continually loses connection or link with laptop

2010-05-18 Thread Mitch Towner
Hi Chris. Thankyou for taking the time to reply to this bug report. I am
happy to hear that your issues have been resolved after performing an
update.

In Ubuntu 10.04, the ubuntuone applet has been removed. You are able to see the
progress/ status of ubuntu one using "u1sdtool" in a terminal window. You can
find out more information about u1sdtool by running "u1sdtool -h" (without the
quotes) from a terminal window. 3 examples of using u1sdtool that I use
regularly are:
"u1sdtool -s"Get the current status of syncdaemon
"u1sdtool --waiting-content" Get the waiting content list
"u1sdtool --waiting-metadata" Get the waiting metadata list

This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this
being fixed with an update. For future reference you can manage the
status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in the yellow
line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down box. You
can learn more about bug statuses at

[Bug 246222] Re: Linux 2.6.26 not loading custom DSDT from initrd

2010-05-18 Thread Yann
OK, this one will still "won't fix" it seems...
So the only solution will be, as everyone concerned by this issue advice on the
web, to go to openSuse...

I'll stick to 8.04 until july: If 10.04.1 include the patch, I'll
upgrade... If not I migrate to openSuse 11.3 that'll be there at this
time.

That's quite funny, 3 years after Shuttleworth saying openSuse devs to
go Ubuntu... to send 5 years users in the opposite direction!

Indeed, this is just another expression of this fact: Ubuntu is loosing
what made it's success, being user centric, which seems every version
less true.

Saying "this was removed due to the ability to seriously damage your
machine with a custom DSDT" when it's exactly the opposite in my case
(no GPU fan => It'll burn in half an hour of low usage!), allowing linux
usage on the affected machine since Dapper... that's really worth
reading this!!!

As noted in bug #576263, the workaround for this issue is as follows:

[Bug 449053] Re: software-center crashed with TypeError in get_status_text()

2010-05-18 Thread Michael Vogt
I added code that makes software-center more robust by using %(amount)s.
If that is missing it will just not display it but not crash.

@SnoStorm - Does it work better with nomodeset? KMS was not enabled by
default for NVidia or ATI hardware in Karmic.

[Bug 557072] Re: system does not power off

2010-05-18 Thread Jacob Zimmermann
The following script works for me (saved as /etc/pm/sleep.d/5_quick-fix-drivers)
NB: The atl1c module is there because otherwise the ethernet controller didn't
work after a resume. Remove it from the list if you aren't experiencing that
problem.
