[Bug 553745] Re: plymouthd crashed with SIGSEGV in ply_event_loop_process_pending_events()

2010-05-17 Thread Anders Kaseorg
The plymouth patches should still be applied (hopefully upstream);
they’re all good changes. Whether they should be applied as a Lucid SRU
is up to the SRU team. It’s possible that the reduction in events from
mountall has made this bug unlikely enough that an SRU is no longer as
critical; I’m not sure. (I never saw the crash myself, I can just see
that the bug is real from looking at the code.) If you are still seeing
this crash after upgrading to mountall 2.15, please let us know.

[Bug 581617] [NEW] Does not dislplay to entire screen (nouveau + >1 display)

2010-05-17 Thread bbordwell
Public bug reported:

The latest update to libdrm-nouveau in maverick caused this regression,
when I boot up the plymouth boot splash has 256 pixels cut off of the
bottom, and also some cut off the right side of the secondary display.
(the same as in lucid, see bug 572155), but then the desktop loads and
it has the exact same dimensions as the plymouth screen, which was not
true in lucid.

In 'Monitor Preferences' my display shows up as unknown (resolution at
1280x760 but native is 1280x1024, it is not changeable) and it does not
seem to even know there are two displays attached, but an image is
getting displayed to both.

Work around is to remove the secondary monitor and reboot.

[Bug 577958] Re: VisualVM cannot load profiler (64 bit)

It looks like this bug is caused by the fact that VisualVM build script
(buildnative-linux64.sh) uses gcc32 on 64bit linux. See also
and my reply. It can be fixed easily by
changing gcc32 to gcc in buildnative-linux64.sh or Ubuntu can use new
version of profiler sources netbeans-profiler-

[Bug 302314] Re: Pidgin not using existing root TLS/SSL certificates for validation

2010-05-17 Thread Brian Candler
The problem definitely remains.

This morning, pidgin under Hardy started giving me the 'invalid
certificate' error for login.live.com, asking me blindly whether or not
to accept the new certificate. It showed me nothing more than the
fingerprint and start/end times to make that choice.

Coincidentally, update manager showed me an update to pidgin, but even
after update the error persisted. I now have:

ii libpurple0 1:2.7.0-0ubuntu1.1~pidgin1.08.04
  multi-protocol instant messaging library
ii pidgin 1:2.7.0-0ubuntu1.1~pidgin1.08.04
graphical multi-protocol instant messaging client for X
ii pidgin-data1:2.7.0-0ubuntu1.1~pidgin1.08.04
multi-protocol instant messaging client - data files
ii pidgin-otr 3.1.0-1
  Off-the-Record Messaging plugin for pidgin

The error also continued after deleting the existing login.live.com
certificate from within pidgin.

I initially rejected the certificate, on the basis that there might be
an upstream device intercepting, logging and/or modifying the traffic.

However I was able to verify the certificate manually like this:

(1) openssl s_client -CApath /etc/ssl -connect login.live.com:443

This showed that the certificate is indeed valid and signed by a trusted
CA (verify return code 0 = OK)

(2) Copy-paste the PEM certificate shown from step 1 into a new file
(ll.cert)

(3) Take the fingerprint of that certificate:

openssl x509 -in ll.cert -noout -fingerprint
> SHA1 Fingerprint=C9:F2:FD:50:A2:0C:AB:4A:45:22:F9:23:E1:91:04:9E:01:F0:64:48

(4) This value matches the value shown by pidgin, so I was able to
accept it safely

It's pretty ridiculous that an end-user has to go to such extremes to
ensure the security of their comms, when all the machinery and the trust
root needed to validate it is already present within Ubuntu.

[Bug 581619] [NEW] do not report a bug when a module failed to build against an unsupported version of the kernel

2010-05-17 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

Apport should not file a bug report when a module failed to build
against an unsupported kernel (not from an official repository or custom
made kernel)

e.g bug 580392
DKMS make.log for fglrx-8.723.1 for kernel 2.6.33.3-henrik-01 (i686)

Most of the time it fails to build because the corresponding headers are
not installed or incompatible with the current version of the module.

Instead of that it should display a message indicating that the user is
not using a genuine kernel from an official repository.

this is the first time it boots into an error. For me, it won't stop me

but I'm not an experienced developer. I'll post here if I find anything

[Bug 575666] Re: cannot boot custom kernel with no initrd

2010-05-17 Thread Simon Kitching
Ok, found the issue: a kernel will only boot in Lucid if devtmpfs is
compiled in. Just setting the following in my .config results in a
successful boot:

CONFIG_DEVTMPFS=y
CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y

Just to repeat: this is a change that occurred late in the lucid
development cycle; before then, devtmpfs was not necessary.

I don't know if making devtmpfs mandatory was a deliberate move or just
accidental, so I'll leave it up to someone else to decide whether to
close this as INVALID or not. Personally, I've got no objection to
enabling devtmpfs so I'm happy now.

As this was working OK in Karmic, this bug should be marked as
regression.

[Bug 459647] Re: Cannot change mouse cursor theme when compiz is enabled

2010-05-17 Thread Casey J Peter
Added myself to the list with this bug. While the work-arounds are
nice, this isn't a LOW priority bug. Sorry Sebastian Bacher, but this
isn't just a cosmetic bug...for some its damn important to be able to
have the larger/different CONSISTENT cursor, and most folks couldn't do
these work-arounds to save their lives.

Not only should this be a high priority for usability, cosmetically this
is the sort of thing that leaves new users irritated with UI sloppiness.
Several folks I've installed Ubuntu for have mentioned some of these
issues, referring to the UI glitches as "win95" crap. I in all honesty
cannot disagree with them.

If we want this OS to be "slicker than the MAC" as the SABDFL has so
loudly shouted to the housetops, then a simple mouse cursor change which
is stock rock STANDARD should just fracking work. That it requires
gconf hoops as well as source rebuilds to fix is NOT FRACKIN'
ACCEPTABLE.

if this were Archnotta problem...just get the right AUR build and be
done with it...but when a distro is shooting for the moon or...er...more
slick than win7 or mac, then these issues aren't LOW. Period.

That an Ubuntu Dev would blow this off as low/fix whenever...chaps my
hide a bit to see, as I'm not going to call my buddy in California and
walk him through the work-arounds. He'll just laugh and toss Ubuntu
back on the pile of "nice tries" and go back to win7 or the mac to do
the things he needs to get done.

UI is SCREAMINGLY important, as the general non-geek public that tries
this is the target audience, and if the UI is garbled for the simplest
changes, the confidence in stability and usability goes out the damn
window.

My 2 cents.

[Bug 581627] [NEW] I can not log off or shut down pc from Gnome

2010-05-17 Thread Ludek
Public bug reported:

I have five clean instalations of Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptops and on the
pc, 64 and 32 bit platform also. All of these computers have the same
problem: It is not possible shut down, log off from Gnome. Sometimes it
is working, sometimes not.

But, there is no way to shut down computer (only power off button, or
shell command).

Like a workaround I add new icon with this launcher:

dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement.Shutdown

But this is only workaround for now.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 581565] Re: Netbook remix panel disappears regularly

2010-05-17 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for your bug report, do you have the same issue using GNOME?
Do you use the desktop effects? Which video driver do you use?
