[Bug 483380] [NEW] totem should depends on a versioned totem-common package
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem totem package actually depends on gnome version of totem-common. You already used it in comment 2. > About the soundcard, is there a way to check whether my soundcard has special features and try to play with it? Re: [Bug 482971] Re: Can't use USB/PL2303-attached Zyxel Omni Mini with non-root user
I bummed to hear you've had to revert back to 9.04. I've found that using the synaptic package manager (System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager) one *can* mark the modem manager for complete removal (just search on 'modem'). Then, a reboot will eliminate the /usr/sbin/modem-manager process hogging the USB modems (like /dev/ttyACM? and/or /dev/ttyUSB?). This makes GNOME-PPP usable again ... and wvdialconf too. Try wvdialconf first (just to pull in some optimal modem configuration settings). I've done this ... and I'm getting connected. I'm not posting the results just yet ... since I'm currently stuck at a terminal server prompt from my ISP. When I (or gnome-ppp or wvdial) tries the 'ppp' command, I'm getting a Requested Service Not Authorized. This is clearly a glitch on my ISP's end. I'll talk with them tomorrow about this. Maybe they've limited their offering to what MS Windows using (e.g. SLIP/CSLIP). Who knows? I'm still working through this weirdness. By the way, I've used 'gtkterm' to confirm precisely what is what with the 'log' (button) view of what is going on behind GNOME-PPP. Type ATZ a couple of times to synch-up/negotiate port speed (and leave stop bits, parity, etc. as they default). At any rate, I'm pretty sure I'm seeing 'real' results (as opposed to GUI muddle). I just thought you might appreciate the early partial/results. While Ubuntu 9.10 seems unusually ornery ... it doesn't look wholesale broken. Ultimately, this looks like a modem-manager bug (that I'll file if nobody else does). The modem-manager leaves breadcrumbs in /var/log/syslog about *NOT* recognizing the USB USR modem as an ADSL modem (cuz it isn't). At that point, the modem-manager really *should* let go of the device. Instead, it sits (or squats) on a device that it knows it cannot use. Blech. That is a bug. Cheers, Steffen. --- On Sun, 11/15/09, jkohler2 wrote: From: jkohler2 Subject: [Bug 482971] Re: Can't use USB/PL2303-attached Zyxel Omni Mini with non-root user To: shule...@yahoo.com Date: Sunday, November 15, 2009, 8:11 AM Under 9.04, I could successfully use my Zoom and U.S. Robotics USB modems with the following installations: First, Gnome-ppp (sudo apt-get install gnome-ppp) Second, from Linuxant.com: dgcmoden 2.22 k2.6.28 generic ubuntu 386.deb.zip After upgrade to Karmic Koala, I see the following in the terminal window: j...@john-laptop:~$ sudo gnome-ppp [sudo] password for john: WVCONF: /root/.wvdial.conf GNOME PPP: Connecting... [Bug 418246] Re: it87 (sensors) module broken, needs automatic adding of a kernel line during installation
For owners of an Asus mainboard there is a better work-around than the dangerous "acpi_enforce_resources=lax" proposal described above: http://www.ubuntu-forum.de/artikel/47250/workaround-lm-sensors-auf-ubuntu-9-10-mit-it87-chip-driver.html (German) It recommends to compile and install lm-sensors 3.1.1 directly from Debian sources. This latest version of lm-sensors supports direct access to hwmon sensors in sysfs. For Asus boards all missing it87 sensors now appear as atk0110 sensors, when entering 'sensors' on the command line. After recompiling the ksensors package from Ubuntu karmic with libsensors4 support, the missing sensors can also be used and displayed by ksensors. Hopefully, the new versions of lm-sensors and ksensors will be part of Ubunut jaunty. -- it87 (sensors) module broken, needs automatic adding of a kernel line during installation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/418246 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 483396] [NEW] Ubuntu doesn't play well with emacs --daemon across sessions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: emacs23 One of the best new features in emacs23 is "--daemon". An emacs daemon can persist as long as you want, across login sessions. However, this doesn't work well in Karmic because of two issues: 1. The XAUTHORITY environment variable changes with every login session, so when you log in a second time the daemon is using a stale value and cannot open new windows. I tried to work around this by using "M-x setenv" from within emacs, but apparently emacs doesn't reread the environment (strace shows it still trying to open the old path). 2. Gnome complains that emacs is still running when you log out. (Yes, of course it's still running, that's the point.) This is just a minor annoyance, you can ignore the warning and it doesn't cause further problems. I should be able to send you the output in 12 hours or less. I would also like to say that I appreciate the time you have invested in writing this driver. [Bug 448735] Re: Random .u1conflict extensions added to files
Has there been any update on this? I started experiencing the same problem earlier today. originally, post install, the application worked fine, and the sync account was working as expected. Because I wanted a new, unified address to keep everything under, I uninstalled, and re- installed according to the documentation provided by Joshua Hoover. Post re-installation, however, nothing works. The account appears that it is connecting to the correct U1 account, but any attempts to add a file to the "Ubuntu One" directory causes an immediate addition of .u1conflict to whatever file it is. If you attempt to create a folder in that directory and change the name, you immediately get an error. What is happening is before the UI is actually allowing the user to make the change to the name, it has already registered a name change to *.u1conflict. SYNCDAEMON.LOG also reports a number of the following entries. 2009-11-15 23:51:19,413 - ubuntuone.SyncDaemon.ActionQueue - WARNING - MakeFile share:'' node:'1695cfad-d9c3-4f53-934b-0a80e78ebbfd' MakeFile(marker="'1695cfad-d9c3-4f53-934b-0a80e78ebbfd'", parent_id="'78cb86d4-9735-47ea-9341-a3a126ea2c47'", share_id="''", name="u'gsdfgfd'") failure DOES_NOT_EXIST 2009-11-15 23:51:19,418 - ubuntuone.SyncDaemon.sync - INFO - -:-:- 1695cfad-d9c3-4f53-934b-0a80e78ebbfd [-:-] ''-'' | Called file_not_created_remove (In: T:LOCAL:F) Is there anything I can do to assist this issue further along? -- Random .u1conflict extensions added to files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/448735 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 483359] Re: scheduled fsck crashes preventing bootup
I got the same (or at least similar) problem (error message) after my last upgrade (kernel + sreadahead + new package ureadahead). However, on my computer (Dell laptop D630, intel graphic) this error occurs at every boot. I get a black screen so that I cannot log in any more -- also the text/console login does not work and even the "failsafe" mode fails. If I add the kernel option "i915.modeset=0" in GRUB to the "failsafe" mode, I still cannot log in after boot but I can see the start-up messages, where the last line is "init: ureadahead-other main process (762) terminated with status 4". [Bug 483420] [NEW] feature and design suggestions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: software-center Actually I did'nt experience a "real" bug - But I would like to suggest to reintroduce that usefull popularity related sorting feature of Ubuntu 9.04's "Add or remove applications" program as well as it's top/buttom split view. I think it was a good idea to add additional columns for sorting like size, downloads per week, percent of uninstallations and other information. In my opinion the features and design of Firefox's "Browse all Add-ons..." website is almost an perfect example and is one of the most important reasons for Firefox's great spreading speed :-). That's why I think the new Ubuntu Software Center should become priority for ubuntu's further updates. Last but not least please excuse the misusing of this bug reporting... Thank you very much. [Bug 469470] Re: proprietary nvidia driver does not work under karmic
Have the same exact symptoms except on a Karmic x86_64 OS. The problem started a few days ago at the same time the 2.6.31-15 generic kernel upgrade came up which also included Nvidia driver upgrades. I'm not sure but I think there was a nvidia-glx-185 kernel of earlier version and if so, it worked. I have a Karmic Ubuntu install running kubuntu-desktop and up until now my nvidia GeForce 9400GT 512 MB DDR2 card and LG 22" Flatron Wide monitor has worked perfectly with the proprietary drivers. When the X issue first came up it initially was a low resolution issue and mostly, not 100% of time, I would just go to console and start to log in when the kdm login screen would suddenly popup. I could log in and everything was fine. Then, I purged and reinstalled all nvidia apps which sometimes caused kdm to start, but later didn't. This progressed purging and reinstalling the 2.6.31-15 generic kernel and all nvidia apps that were installed by default. On occasion, this process would allow kdm to run and was able to log in without issues. Kde ran fine. But it wont stay fixed and the last few times I did this the original message stated above comes up. I suspect Hal and KDMS, whatever they are, are also envolved as they show up in the logs, but I haven't a clue how to trouble shoot except to reinstall Hal which didn't help. I urge you not to let this bug expire as it will force me to revert to Jaunty or an earlier nvidia driver. It's disconcerting to have this issue come up now that I have Karmic up-to-date and never had an nvidia driver issue before. Please fix it.
